Jay-Z Schools Drake In ‘Light Up,’ New Leaked Song

‘Godfather’-referencing track from Drake’s forthcoming Thank Me Later hit the Internet late Wednesday. By Jayson Rodriguez Drake Photo: Kevin Winter/Getty Images Drake’s long-awaited collaboration with Jay-Z, “Light Up,” has finally arrived, leaked onto the Web late Wednesday (May 26) by mixtape DJ the Evil Empire. In the song, from Drake’s forthcoming Thank Me Later LP (due June 15), the young MC rhymes about his fast ascent to fame while Jay-Z, the elder statesman, gives the So Far Gone star a lesson in living life on the throne. “But I just wanna tell the truth/ Before one of these haters loads a couple shells and shoots,” Drake spits. “The sh– feels like when Fredro Starr/ Was in ‘Sunset Park’ stunting hard in his yellow goose, yeah/ And I’m a motherf—ing list target/ But a target nonetheless, and I just started/ Was that directed at moi? Can’t be/ They must be talking to themselves — Hov, hands free.” Later, the Brooklyn MC talks directly to the Toronto upstart, referencing conspirators in “The Godfather” and detailing how his rise will bring detractors, and exactly how they’ll attempt to bring him down. “Drake, here’s how they gonna come at you/ With silly rap feuds trying to distract you/ In disguise, in the form of a favor/ The Barzini meet, watch for the traitors/ Uh, I done see it all, done it all/ That’s why none of these dum-dums could dun him off.” Earlier this year, Drake described the track as being similar to the conversations he has with the legendary rapper. “It’s just me and Jay both rapping on it for an extended period of time,” Drake told MTV News in March. “It’s real rap. I do sing on it, but it’s just on the hook. It’s great. The perspective, the dynamic on the track — it’s me and Jay’s relationship on the song, basically. When you hear it, people will be like, ‘Oh man.’ That’s how we are — just the two. He definitely has guided me a lot, as far as his words and his advice. We have a real funny rapport. I always enjoy my conversations with Jay.” Last last year, Drake revealed how “Light Up” came together, explaining how the drum-laden production made him want to recruit Jay-Z for the number. The two collaborated previously on Hov’s The Blueprint 3’s “Off That,” but Drake was only featured on the hook. “When I heard that beat, the drums that they had come up with, it was like, ‘Man, this is a moment, this sounds like where I’m at in my life,’ ” Drake said. “So, we took it and [producer Noah “40” Shebib what he does to pieces of music that I see potential in — he took it to the next spot.” “Light Up” is the most recent track from Thanks Me Later to leak this week, joining “Fireworks,” his Alicia Keys collaboration that popped up online on Wednesday. Drake’s ‘Fireworks’ Leaks Online

The Toronto MC raps ‘it wasn’t love’ with Rihanna, talks Lil Wayne and family on Thank Me Later track. By Jayson Rodriguez Drake Photo: Johnny Nunez/WireImage “Fireworks,” the song that kicks off Drake’s forthcoming album , Thank Me Later, leaked online Wednesday (May 26). On it, the rapper touches on his rumored alliance with Rihanna , amid verses about Lil Wayne and his rocky relationship with his father. “I could tell it wasn’t love, / I just thought you’d f—ed with me/ Who could have predicted/ Lucky Strike would have you stuck with me,” Drake raps in the second verse, referring to the Manhattan bowling alley where the two reportedly made out. “Damn, I kept my wits about me, luckily/ What happened between us that night it always seems to trouble me/ Now all of a sudden, these gossip rags want to cover me/ And you making it seem like it happened that way because of me. “But I was curious,” he continues. “And I’ll never forget it, baby/ What an experience/ You could have been the one, but it wasn’t serious/ There was smoke in the air before/ That was me clearing it, that felt good.” The track was produced by Drake ‘s frequent collaborator Noah “40” Shebib and features Alicia Keys singing the hook. The rapper first began performing pieces of the song while on his current Away From Home Tour. Earlier this month, during the Los Angeles stop, he announced Keys would be featured on the number. The song begins with the lyrics, “money just changed everything,” picking up where he left off at the end of the So Far Gone EP’s “Fear.” The third verse finds Drake opening about his father, a Memphis studio musician who worked alongside the likes of Jerry Lee Lewis, and whom he’s had a challenging relationship with; his parents split when he was only 5 years old. “Everything is the same, but it feels different/ My dad called me up knowing that I still listen,” the Toronto MC rhymes. “And he still got his foot out, guilt tripping/ It’s been years, thought I just learned to deal with it.” Drake spoke to MTV News in April about “Fireworks,” explaining why it would be the album’s kickoff. “The song itself is the first song on the album; I think it’s the biggest indicator of what the album is gonna be like,” Drake said. “That’s why I picked that song to go first, and that’s why I wrote the first verse like that. It’s really where I am in my life right now. I know they’re looking forward to the album, so I want them to get a feel of how the story starts off.” Does Drake make “Fireworks” on his new song? Wale Was Rooting For Hometown Wizards In NBA Draft Lottery

‘Nah, we can’t get the #1 pick,’ the DMV MC recalls thinking of Wizards’ chances at star point guard John Wall. By Shaheem Reid Wale Photo: Getty Images Most of Wale’s hometown teams are giving fans great hope for the future. The Washington Nationals have a tremendous blue chip prospect pitcher in Stephen Strasburg. The Redskins acquired a first-ballot Hall of Fame quarterback in Donovan McNabb via trade and, this week, the Washington Wizards hit the lotto! One of the worst teams in the NBA, the Wizards struck the jackpot by winning the NBA lottery, which entitled them to the very first pick in this year’s NBA draft. It’s projected that the team will go with University of Kentucky Point Guard John Wall. “I’mma have to call old Johnny Boy today,” Wale said by phone from Atlanta, where he’s been in the studio with Gucci Mane, Waka Flocka Flame and Yung LA. “I never met him. I’mma just talk to him. Hopefully we’ll get him. You never know, but either way, he’s gonna have a tremendous career.” Prior to the actual Draft lottery, 14 teams were ranked in order of their regular-season records. The league-worst New Jersey Nets held the top position and, therefore, the best opportunity to get the #1 pick, with a little more than a 25 percent chance. Meanwhile, the Wizards were in the middle of the pack of 14, with a 10 percent shot. The Wizards, of course, came out on top, moving up to get Wall. Wale said he was conducting business on Tuesday, but found it difficult to concentrate with the NBA draft lottery under way. “I was actually on a conference call with [an] important company,” Wale said. “It was a countdown. Then it was like, ‘Nah, we can’t get the #1 pick.’ When it got to five left, I was like, ‘No way.’ When it was three [teams left], I completely dropped out of the conference call. I was not paying attention at all.” Wale says Wall could bring the Wizards much needed energy. “Young blood, new blood,” the DMV MC said. “I think he’ll complement Andray Blatche and Gil [Arenas] as well. I think Blatche can definitely be one of the best forwards in the league — at least the top of the East Coast. I think [Wall] will give them a opportunity to do a little more. I think [Blatche] showed he’s capable of being one of the top big men in the league when everybody got traded [last season].” Still, Wale concedes the Wizards will need a little more than Wall to get back into championship contention. “We obviously need the fan support,” he said. “We need to change the morale of the team; they have to believe they can do it. I’m a big LeBron James fan, but I’m also very supportive of all the teams coming out of D.C. I’m extra supportive. I always sit on the [arena/stadium] floor and cheer on the teams whenever I’m home: Redskins, Nationals, Capitals and United. You go to the Redskins games, and people support them good or bad. The flow at the Wizards games was not looking good towards the end of the season. I wanna turn that around.” What do you think of Wale’s loyalty to his hometown teams? Tell us in the comments! Drake Brings Out Special Guests At Dallas Away From Home Tour Stop

Baby and Lil Twist join their Young Money/ Cash Money comrade; Drizzy drops a Dallas freestyle. By Sarah Bryant Drake performs in Dallas on Wednesday Photo: Sarah Bryant DALLAS — Drake ‘s Away From Home Tour landed at the Palladium on Wednesday night, and the Young Money MC sounded just like the records you bang in your car — no Auto-Tune necessary. The Toronto native kicked off the show with songs from his breakout mixtape, So Far Gone, and then gave fans a taste of what’s to come on his June 15 debut, Thank Me Later, with “Fireworks,” which will feature Alicia Keys on the album. Drake temporarily diverted the love and attention from himself to his big brother, Lil Wayne. “It’s Young Money all day. Free Weezy,” Drake said between songs. “When I say Young Money, you say Free Weezy.” Birdman then made a special appearance during “4 My Town (Play Ball),” and the crowd got even crazier when the DJ dropped the beat for “Money to Blow.” “We certified getting it CM, YM, Cash Money business,” Baby rapped. Lil Twist also joined Drake onstage during “Bedrock.” The biggest spectacle was made by a fan, not a guest MC. Christina McAlister from Fort Worth, Texas, was picked from the audience to participate in the show. She landed not just a dance with Drake, but a kiss on the lips. The ladies “ooohed” with excitement as Christina tried to keep her cool. Shortly after, Drake pulled out his mic stand covered with bras, and his collection began to rack up, as women threw their bras to the stage. “I’ll make sure to add these to my treasure chest,” he chuckled. Though his newest single, “Find Your Love,” was conspicuously absent, he had to perform his breakthrough track, “Best I Ever Had.” Drake’s fans knew this show couldn’t be missed, because getting tickets wasn’t easy. In Dallas, tickets sold out within the first 24 hours. Devin Smith, a 23-year old senior from the University of North Texas, had to wait until tickets were re-released in mid-April to score his. “Just seeing Drake was on a different level!” Smith exclaimed. He and his friend arrived at the Palladium at 11:30 a.m. for the 8 p.m. performance so they could get the best seats in the house. They camped out in front, studied for summer classes and chatted with their newfound, like-minded friends. “It was worth the wait sitting there. … He put on a great concert,” Smith said. “He had great energy, and it was everything I thought it would be. It sounds cheesy, but it’s true.” Drake must have really loved his time in the D. On Thursday morning (May 20), he released “9 AM in Dallas Freestyle.” “Weezy, I’m just out here reppin’ us,” he raps. “Till I get to shake the hand of the man that’s blessing us/ I know these n—as miss the mean lyrics/ Kush got the room smelling like Teen Spirit/ … Money gets all of my love and affection/ Cars all black like the cover of Essence / I’m allergic to coming in second/ But I never sneeze/ YMO-ney, n—a.” Have you checked out Drake’s Away From Home Tour?
