Sarah Palin on the Hannity Show.

What is with the echo? Is she giving this interview from inside of a box? Okay kids the word for today is “desperate”.

Enough With the Jay-Z Fetish [Rants]

Jay-Z is a pretty good rapper. Jay-Z is not the best rapper ever. Jay-Z is not a role model. Jay-Z is not a hip hop hero. Not even for you, cool kids. Get off Jay-Z’s dick. GOD DAMN KIDS TODAY DON’T EVEN APPRECIATE Illmatic . Sorry. Had to get that off my chest. I never loved Jay-Z’s last eight albums or so, but that’s just a decrepit old opinion that you are free to ignore. Let’s examine the bigger problem. Jay-Z’s music is okay. Whatever. But Jay-Z is to hip hop what New York is to magazines: Flawless, efficient, gleaming; cool, soulless, endlessly self-absorbed. Crowning Jay-Z the King of New York for bragging about his fucking market share is like giving New York the National Magazine Award for Best Magazine because of their unparalleled feature on Downtown’s Most Expensive Chairs. It misses the big picture. Don’t take it from me! I’m just one jerk. But I just got back from the Harvest of Hope Festival, a huge three-day music festival in Florida, where I got the chance to interview Dead Prez , the single most non-hypocritical rap group in America, the closest thing to a modern-day Public Enemy. I didn’t even have to mention Jay-Z’s name to get this from M-1: What happened to hip hop was the use of capitalism in hip hop. I was listening to EPMD the other day, and Parrish said—I don’t want to misquote him—but he said, “And I still don’t see one rapper living comfortably.” Things have changed since that time. We have found artists who have developed the capitalist mold into their way of thinking. Artists have even shifted from the artistry to how well you can make money. That really shows how good of an MC you can be. So if you come on the scene, and you are seen as someone who can be influential and knows how to turn capital over, then generally you can speak the language of hip hop. That’s why Jay-Z has found affluence, and Young Jeezy, the moneymaking aspect of it. To me, that’s the poison. That’s the poison in it, is the indoctrination of capitalism. Not to say we don’t need people to understand the business of making money; but the model wasn’t Marcus Garvey—the model became people like Rockefeller. And Scarface. And all them. So, yea. So, yea. Hey cool kids, you can’t idolize Jay-Z and Dead Prez at the same time. And while Dead Prez was down in dirty, muddy-ass Elkton, FL, giving a free concert to benefit migrant farmworkers, Jay-Z was performing before a crowd of celebrities in Atlantic City before retiring to the high-limit blackjack room at the Borgata. Yes, Jay-Z is a cool black guy who has nice flows and a famous, pretty wife and knows CEOs and other fun things, and white internet people have embraced him orgasmically just like they bizarrely embraced janky coke rap a couple years ago. But Jay-Z represents one thing: money. And you, cool kids, always aspire to be about more than that. Let’s have good idols instead of empty ones that are all shiny.

Spencer Pratt Still Signed On For ‘The Hills’ Season Six

Though he says he’s taking a break to fight cyber crime, MTV says Pratt is still on the show. By Jocelyn Vena Spencer Pratt Photo: Jason Mitchell/ Getty Images “Hills” fans may have been surprised to learn last week that Spencer Pratt would no longer be managing Heidi Montag’s career, but they were probably more blown away on Monday, when Pratt told People.com that he’d be leaving the reality show behind in order to pursue a career in fighting cyber crime. But though a rep for Pratt confirms that he gave those quotes to the magazine, an MTV spokesperson seemingly contradicted his statement. “Spencer will still be a part of ‘The Hills’ season six, which will air this spring,” the spokesperson told MTV News. “In the last few months I have discovered a new passion and new purpose to my life,” Pratt told People.com , teasing his new career path. “With this in mind, I have decided to take a break from my obligations to MTV’s ‘The Hills’ and discontinue filming any more episodes for this current season.” The 26-year-old told the magazine he is currently studying software engineering with a focus on encryption at USC so that he can work for the American Defense Enterprises in their cyber security division. “Upon learning of President Obama’s declaration that the ‘cyber threat is one of the most serious economic and national security challenges we face as a nation,’ I have decided to refocus my energy and devote my full resources to helping America face this and other unprecedented challenges,” said Pratt, whom Heidi replaced with psychic Aiden Chase as her manager. “My new mission is this: To do my part in maintaining the technological superiority of the U.S. military and prevent emerging technologies from threatening our nation’s security,” he added. “With that being said, I am saddened to take this break from filming MTV’s ‘The Hills.’ At this time, however, I feel I would not be honoring my country or myself if I were to continue this endeavor when I have the opportunity and the ability to assist our nation against these prevalent threats.”

Does Sad Obama Have Seasonal Affective Disorder? [Sad]

Poor Barack Hussein Obama. Fred Hiatt of The Washington Post thinks he has a “happiness deficit” because he hates his job . But we have another theory: Barack Obama isn’t sad… he’s afflicted by SAD. Seasonal Affective Disorder. Hiatt— overlord of the worst opinion section in America —paints our president in such melancholy hues that you can imagine Hamlet slapping his back with a heartening “Buck up, kiddo.” The problem, Hiatt writes, is that Obama “doesn’t seem all that happy being president.” Hiatt wonders with concern: “What part of it does he enjoy?” Obama bristles at “schmoozing with foreign leaders;” he only reluctantly goes about “rolling up his sleeves and wading into the crowd;” he even prefers a game of basketball to “putting his feet up on his desk after a long day and chewing over events with aides.” Hiatt cites this sad excerpt from a January People interview: President Obama spoke in such a hush about the loneliness of his decisions on war and terrorism that one could hear between his words the tick of an old lighthouse clock across the room. An old lighthouse clock . Symbolic, because lighthouse keepers also hate their jobs. Is Obama just your typical disaffected commander-in-chief, joylessly clocking into the Oval Office each day and googling “retirement communities + greater Chicago area” between meetings? Since we’re playing Presidential psychologist, we’d like to suggest a more clinical explanation for Obama’s recent funk. It’s called Seasonal Affective Disorder, and it afflicts as many as 1.5-9% of adult Americans. Obama’s physical found nothing last month, but the evidence suggests, Contra Fred Hiatt, that Obama’s Happiness Deficit is in fact nothing more than a seasonal deficit of Vitamin D. Obama’s Big Sad Time really began with the death of the public option back in December. It reached its peak with the election of Scott Brown in February. This is the dead of winter! Wikipedia, work your magic: Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), also known as winter depression or winter blues, is a mood disorder in which people who have normal mental health throughout most of the year experience depressive symptoms in the winter . Our seasonally-depressed president has been in no state to weather the normal ups-and-downs of the presidency. The hallowed look in his eyes grew hallower. His hair grew even grayer. He speaks in hushed tones of loneliness and wants nothing to do with other world leaders who would only remind him of his own pain. He’s smoking again, popping Provigil like it was Tic Tacs . Just gotta make it to spring, he probably mutters to himself during a midnight trip to the White House kitchen, another sleepless night, another microwave burrito and endless C-Span marathon… to forget. But spring approaches! We are hopeful that with the sun and the crocuses will come a reborn Obama as his nervous system floods with Sweet Lady Vitamin D. Until that time, though, we have a suggestion that’s probably healthier than cigs and late-night C-Span marathons:

Are Israel and the US about to break up?

News about Israel today is dominated by headlines pointing to the “greatest rift in decades”. I find it hard to believe that one of America's most special relationships is really in existential peril…but things don't look great between the two nations. Last week, as Biden was in Israel discouraging settlement building, the government announced 1600 new settlements in East Jerusalem. The Obama Adminstration is more than a little miffed. And though Netanyahu's government has apologized for the *timing* of the announcement, they don't seem near to reversing the decision. From Voice of America: “The Israeli leader said Israel has been building in mostly Arab East Jerusalem for the past 40 years and no Israeli leader during that time has stopped it. Mr. Netanyahu said building Jewish neighborhoods on the land, in his words, in no way has hurt the Arabs of East Jerusalem, and he said the construction did not come at their expense.” (Link: http://www1.voanews.com/english/news/middle-east/Israel-Tries-to-Defuse-Crisis-w… ) So what happens if nobody gives? Is Israel really in a position to distance itself from the US? Is the Obama Administration really in a position to risk its closest ally in the Middle East? Or is this a bunch of hullabaloo over nothing? added by: afitzgerald

South Park Ready to Ridicule Tiger Woods

Tiger Woods may be piecing his family life back together, but the troubled golfer still has a long way to go – and is the easiest of targets – in the court of public opinion. A new season of South Park premieres on Wednesday and the episode is all about Tiger. One can only imagine the kind of South Park quotes this is going to produce. “It is such an important issue in America right now – the sex addiction outbreak,” co-creator Matt Stone joked, referring to Woods’ dalliances with tons of waitresses. “We’re all really concerned about him.” Flanked by Cartman, Tiger Woods expresses regret . Like Family Guy , South Park is nothing if not an equal-opportunity, topical offender. Episodes have mocked Tom Cruise, Scientology, Michael Jackson’s death and much more. At the very least, Stone and co-creator Trey Parker can point to Family Guy ‘s recent controversy over Sarah Palin’s Down Syndrome baby, or its minutes-long HIV chorus line. Anything regarding the Tiger Woods scandal will seem tame by comparison.

James Brown’s Body Missing From Crypt

The remains of the singer – who died on Christmas Day 2006 (25.12.06) of a suspected heart attack aged 73 – were being held at his daughter Deanna's house in South Carolina while a public mausoleum is being prepared. However, LaRhonda Pettit, one of James' illegitimate daughters, claims the body of the 'Papa's Got A Brand New Bag' singer has gone missing to prevent her carrying out an autopsy to determine the true cause of his death. LaRhonda, 48, is convinced James was actually killed by people trying to get his money. She said: “My daddy's body has disappeared. I have no clue where it was taken, but I need to know where. “I'm convinced his death was suspicious and I want the people responsible brought to justice. “The only way to do that is to exhume his body and have an autopsy. I cannot understand why one was never conducted.” LaRhonda is one of a dozen people to come forward after James' death and claim to be one of his children, and in 2007 she took a DNA test which gave a result that he was 99.9 per cent likely to be her father. She claims James had an affair with her mother in the 60s. The soul singer – who was known as the 'Godfather of Soul' – had nine children by four wives and his will named six children as beneficiaries, not including LaRhonda. LaRhonda added to America's Globe newspaper: “It was common knowledge that my daddy took illegal drugs. “He was also hooked on various prescription painkillers. At the very least there were enablers who helped cause his death.” added by: prodigynius

We Follow ‘Hope For Haiti Now’ Donations With World Food Programme

MTV News crew met with WFP’s Louis Hamann to see how food donations are being distributed in Haiti. By Gil Kaufman A victim of the earthquake in Haiti prepares food Photo: MTV News Haiti faces untold challenges as the Caribbean island nation tries to dig out and recover from the devastating 7.0 earthquake that leveled thousands of buildings and killed more than 200,000 in January. In addition to medical attention and shelter in advance of the rainy season, one of the most crucial needs continues to be food aid to the millions of Haitians left homeless in the wake of the disaster. MTV News returned to the island in late February to follow the trail of some of the more than $65 million raised during January’s “Hope for Haiti Now” telethon . We dropped in on staffers from the 50-year-old United Nations World Food Programme, which delivers life-saving food to victims of war, civil conflict and natural disasters across the globe. Even before the quake, conditions were desperate in Haiti, the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere, with poverty and hunger already rampant. But the destruction of so many homes, businesses and government buildings made conditions even more dire for the chronically hungry and impoverished. MTV’s Sway traveled to Haiti to document the work of the WFP, applying stickers to a few 110-pound bags of urgently needed rice to follow their path to hungry Haitians. Surrounded by bags of food in the port of the nation’s devastated capital, Port-au-Prince, WFP’s Louis Hamann said the organization has brought in about 25,000 metric tons of food (around 55 million pounds) to date. “It just gives you an idea of how massive this operation is for us here in Haiti,” he said, noting that the $58 million grant from “Hope for Haiti Now” has helped the organization buy, ship and distribute the food aid to those most in need, possibly for the next year. Rice is an obvious first-choice staple to distribute because it is easy to store, cook and share and a little goes a long way. “The reason that it’s only rice right now is to make sure that we reach everybody quickly and efficiently [and] calm down the food situation in Port-au-Prince,” said Hamann, who added that the plan is to move to a “more traditional basket” of food items featuring staples of the Haitian diet in the next weeks and months. Sway also visited a massive staging area where trucks were loaded up with bags of rice that were delivered early in the morning to the sea of refugees set up in a temporary tent city inside the Sylvio Cator Soccer Stadium near the island’s capital. As the thousands inside the stadium lined up for food aid early in the morning, they were quickly joined by thousands more looking for rice, an example of the more than 3,000 families that line up every day in just one location to haul away the heavy bags. MTV’s crew then followed one of those families as they carried a bag back to their crumpled home, a pile of rubble and twisted metal, where the rice would be cooked over a makeshift carbon stove by widowed mother Myrthile Joseph. “Thank you to everyone that donated for Haiti from all over the world,” said a grateful Joseph. “Thank you for the distribution that is going to the people in need.” Related Videos Making Progress In Haiti

‘American Idol’ In 60 Seconds: Improvement, Rage And Cocky Bananas

From Michael Lynche’s ‘This Woman’s Work’ to Alex Lambert’s tear-heavy exit, it’s all in the latest ‘Idol in 60 Seconds.’ By Jim Cantiello Katelyn Epperly, Lilly Scott, Alex Lambert and Katie Stevens on Thursday’s “American Idol” Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images ” ‘American Idol’ in 60 Seconds” has fast become an MTV News institution, but it goes by so fast that it’s not always easy to catch every golden nugget. So, here we present to you a slightly altered script of the weekly bite-size recap of “Idol” high jinks, plus a joke or two that had to be cut for time! This week was the “American Idol” contestants’ last chance to make the Top 12, so you know what that means: A lot of desperation and a lot of tears … and that was just the judges! Yes, it was a weird week of bad singing, really bad song choices and unbelievably bad split screens. But it’s season nine, so what else is new? Actually, a few things! Lacey Brown and Didi Benami finally sang well, Lee Dewyze sort of smiled and Tim Urban’s take on Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” didn’t completely, utterly suck. [ Ellen runs up to him and yells: “That was fantastic!” ] But let’s not throw the boy a parade — especially when we also had Siobhan Magnus doing the Animals a cappella for her dad and Big Mike Lynche doing Kate Bush’s “This Woman’s Work” for hostile wombs everywhere. [ Kara talks about being moved because she doesn’t have a baby! ] You know what was also sort of gross? [ Ellen: “Cocky banana.” Simon: “Picture Randy in a bikini.” Andrew: “Gotta rub me the right way!” ] Thank heaven for Crystal Bowersox, whose amazing “Give Me One Reason” gave everyone a new reason to love her. On Thursday night’s results show, producers continued to remind us how much better season eight was — especially following the departures of Lilly Scott and Alex Lambert . Seriously, America? Most of my favorites eliminated? I hope you choke on a cocky banana! Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions. American Idol: The Blind Side [Recaps]

You there, Seacrest! What day is this? Oh I had the most wondrous vision last night. Last night I think I actually cared about this season of American Idol . I felt real feelings. Too bad they were angry feelings. Yeah. Those eliminations last night? They were bunk , man. Well three quarters of them were, at least. But we’ll get to those in a moment. You know what else was bunk, though? That new bit they tried called Two Completely Forgettable Contestants From Last Year Do Dueling Pianos. What the Dunkleman was that thing? And then afterward Seacrest walked up to Scott the Blind Guy and it was all “Hey, dude how’s it going, dude” and all faux relaxed and shit when all Seacrest was thinking was “Don’t try to high-five him. Don’t try to high-five him. Oh god, don’t try to high-five him.” And then Matt Giraud was on the other side. Matt Giraud, ladies and gentlemen. Him. Nothing says “music star” quite like… Matt Giraud. He said he was working on some stuff, a jazz tune he did with some lady had hit number one on iTunes’ jazz charts. Oh I’ll bet iTunes’ Jazz Charts are just a bumping place to be, here in the year 2010. Ohhhhhh smoooooth jazz on the computer. So many people who love jazz know how to operate a computer. Jazz. Matt Giraud. Ladies and gentlemen. The eliminations! Todrick Hall This was not surprising. The guy just didn’t have much steam. He was perfectly capable, but would always be known as the dancer who was trying to sing. For whatever reason, folks just don’t cotton to that kind of thing on Idol . I think in some ways they don’t want to root for someone who’s already sorta worked in The Biz. Todrick was on Broadway. There’s not a lot of come-up-from-nowhereism in that story. Plus, he just wasn’t the strongest vocalist. Plain and simple. Simple and plain. Goodbye Todrick! See you on the White Way. The Witch of Blackbird Pond This was surprising! I thought people loved Willa the Wisp. Though maybe she suffered from a sort of vote-splitting kind of thing. Those that wanted weird-haired ladyguitar went for Crystal Bloomersmacks, and those that wanted a pretty girl who plinked out a few notes on her cute little mandolute went for Didi Baloney. So Elizabeth Proctor just got stuck in the middle, left to fend for herself with nothing but her fading witch powers to protect her. It’s too bad, because the gal had chops. And she was up against Katie Stevens! This season’s second most-annoying contestant! (After Haeley, of course and forever.) Though in America’s defense, sort of, I will say that Professor Trelawney was maybe one of the worst-styled contestants in American Idol history. (OK, that’s probably overreaching, but.) I mean those ridiculous gray tatters of hair. Gray!!!! On a show about youth and spunk! You’re gonna show up with motherfucking gray hair you idiot? Gah. Plus she always wore fourteen layers of pancake makeup and then no color, so her whole face, lips included, were this washed-out mess. I mean she looked really terrible . So I get that, America. You are all horrible shallow people, but I get you. Because I too am a horrible shallow person. The witch has been burned at the stake of public opinion. Now. What else floats? Very small rocks? Churches? Katelyn Epperly This was really a “The fuck?” moment last night. She was up against Paige Miles. Yes, the Paige Miles. Paige Miles who’s had no idea where she is for weeks now. She wants to go home but is too nervous to ask anyone how exactly she can go about doing that. “Well, I don’t want to bother them, they all seem so busy… I’ll just stand here. They’ll figure it out eventually.” Except they won’t, Paige! They once put a cat scratching post through to the final two! They didn’t notice until almost the very end! You could literally put a wig on a shoe and the Idol producers would be like “Great great, get this kid in hair and makeup, we’re live in ten.” Paige, you need to say something. Just tell them you have an emergency or something. It’ll be fine. But if you don’t, then more people like Katelyn Epperly, a deserving contestant, will be sent home. Epperly! Can you believe it? What is America thinking? First, and most importantly, she’s pretty. (Though I suppose that doesn’t matter that much to the TeenScream 5000 voting collective.) But also she was certainly one of the better singers out of the rumpled and disastrous ladies. And yet, now she’s dead. Dead and buried. Out by that old creepy shed in the back. A sad little barely-marked grave. Just a cross of sticks. Ryan muttering “In spirito sancto…” and blessing himself and walking away. A cold moon perched in the sky. The air in wisps. A faraway cackle. The Witch out there somewhere in the woods, planning. Alex Lambert Watch this at the 1:35 mark. That’s how I feel about you, America. No, ya didn’t. YOU ELIMINATED THE BEST GUY. Ohhhhhh I know Fozzie Bear sang that pretty Maxwell song on Wednesday and hurbity-burbity. But will you ever actually buy that fool’s slow-moans album? No, you won’t. Would you buy Carol Brady’s album of teen-centric Jason Mraz songs? Yeah, you would. So why are you not voting for him, America? I suppose I could have done my part and cast a vote or two, but I’m just one man. I just don’t understand this. That Teenager from Texas is still on the show! Still on the show! And Alex Lambert, the great white hope of Idol season 27 has now been tossed in a shallow grave next to Epperly, two blondes not making a right, his sad and beautiful mullet lost forever to the ages. I do not understand. I will never understand. I just want to know why. So that’s that and here’s your Top 12, America! You’ve got Fozzie Bear, Idi Amin, a kid from Texas who’s someday going to go on a shooting spree from a bell tower or settle down with a nice fellow named Bruce or both, Katie the Uneven Stevens, the Egghead Latino who somehow made it through, a couple of other people, Paige Miles who’s starting to really get worried that they might never let her leave, and Tim Urban. Tim Urban. Sex bomb. Hollister mannequin. Beautiful disaster. This is the worst season of American Idol in history. And the worst part? All of a sudden, I care .
