How MTV Is Selling Jersey Shore to Foreigners [Advertising]

Next season, Jersey Shore goes to Miami Beach. But last season’s exploits are about to go international. MTV is launching the show in more than 30 countries this week. Here’s how they are selling this most American export abroad. George Orwell once said “Advertising is the rattling of a stick inside a swill bucket.” This is so appropriate for Jersey Shore , that trash can Americans love so much to eat from. Today, Times’ Brian Stelter today explores how MTV is attempting to convince foreigners that they too should join awful feast. Turns out it is easier than you might expect. According to the Times , “MTV executives say they believe the “Jersey Shore” narrative is universally appealing.” Sort of like the Bible, or Gilligan’s Island . Even the nicknames are surprisingly cross-cultural. Writes Stelter: Mr. Sorrentino is better known as the Situation . The nickname, mocked by many in the United States, will be unchanged in Portugal, France, the Netherlands and some other markets served by MTV. Some names, it seems, defy translation. Thank God. But just what have MTV’s transnational Mad Men come up with to shill the Jersey Shore crew to the highly sophisticated Europeans and whoever else lives not in America? Let’s take a look at these foreign market Jersey Shore ads… through the eyes of a foreigner. (Images and video via the Times) According to Google Translate, the text on this ad reads “Buenos Aires, Jersey Shoreáte All the weeks desde el 24 marzo.” Bad Job, Google Translate. But I am a foreigner who speaks in many tongues, so I understand. On the poster I see a muscle man who is tan. In our culture, muscles are good—we either want to have them or want to be with someone who does. The man is adorned with flashy jewelery: Perhaps he is wealthy. I enjoy watching wealthy, fit people people flaunt their wealth. The man looks like he is aggressive. He looks both threatening and appealing. Are his hand signs American for “welcome?” or “I will fight you?” I will watch this show. This is an interesting ad. As a foreigner, I have no idea about the constellation of cultural references invoked by the phrase “Jersey Shore”. Its prominence on this ad is an enigma to me. I am intrigued, but slightly confused. But I also see a muscle man. As you already know, in my culture large muscles are good. What’s he doing? He is drinking a bottle of wine. Wine makes people go crazy. A large muscular man going crazy. Sounds like a pretty good show. Oh, and I can speak English well enough to read the slogan: “MUSCLES + GEL + TANNING BED = SEX” Well, why didn’t you just say so? I will watch this show. In this video I see two Indian men working out, attempting to “get juiced”. In my culture, Indian men are thought of as generally weak, so the paradox amuses me. I am laughing: “Hoo hoo hoo” (This is how my people laugh, you must understand.) The announcer tells me “Jersey Shore” has “got America talking.” As a foreigner, I am fascinated by America. Oh, and there are a bunch of American muscle men and American chicks with big boobs! Is this how America is? I will watch this show. In this video, an old woman is getting a “blow out”. Do I understand what a “blow out” is? Not really, but I do understand that old women should not look like this. Hoo hoo hoo. There are the same pictures of the muscle men and boob girls! I understand now: The Americans in this show are obsessed with their appearances! We, too, are obsessed with our appearances. And boobs and muscles, and America. I will watch this show. Hey, how did this American ad for Jersey Shore get in here? I do not understand any of these references: What is this “Shore House?” What is this “Guidos?” Oh, there are the boob girls and muscle men again! I will watch this show.

North Carolina doctor lets his voice be heard in support of Obama’s health care reform.

In 2008 nearly 300,000 North Carolina children (12.8 percent) were uninsured. The numbers are likely worse now. Does insurance really make a difference in children’s health? Let me answer with a single statistic: uninsured children are 37 percent more likely to die when hospitalized than those with insurance. We say we want our children to learn and be healthy so they can compete successfully with the world. But if they cannot see, hear, or breathe, if they suffer from obesity, diabetes, attention deficit disorder, dental caries, and infections, how is it we expect them to learn, much less compete? Of course I am not just a health care provider; I am also vice president of the region’s largest independent pediatric practice, employing dozens of workers. I was floored this year when it came time to negotiate an insurance plan for our employees. As doctors we feel we don’t have the luxury many business owners exercise of forgoing health insurance for their employees altogether. But the cost this year was breathtaking, and what we and our employees got for our money was disappointing. What I know as a doctor I also see as a business owner: The current system is failing us all, it is getting worse every year, and it cannot continue. (You can read the rest of Dr. David Hill’s article here ) Regardless of the deafening sounds of anger, and the manufactured talking points, coming from the Right Wing, the facts are clear that our system is broken and that something must be done. The Republicans are so desperate to stop this bill that

Belavezha Accords requested search by biased Glenn Beck and Fox

Belavezha Accords is nothing but some hyped up american history event that Fox news is using as a peg to distract people from the important issues at hand like Health Care reform for everyone. Glen Beck as always gives out a dramatic rant about his love for the United States of America but somehow manages to make the US worse by creating idiotic audiences who think Glenn Beck knows something. Fox News claims to have balanced news reports but anyone with half a brain can tell that they are biased. This Belavezha Accords that they want you to look up is just a hoax. Just something to add drama. They are trying to compare the United States to the Soviet Union and how the US is slowly going to a communist route. This is of course completely false as health care reform is merely about giving universal access to a basic necessity of like such as medicine, doctors, hospitals and life saving treatments. belavezha accords is just another fancy thing that may make you think they know, but they don’t. Please, do your own research and see what the Fox News network is trying to make you do. Find your own facts. Belavezha Accords requested search by biased Glenn Beck and Fox is a post from: Daily World Buzz Continue reading

Nadine Coyle’s Skinny Legs are Still Amazing of the Day

I love my bitches skinny. I think with this whole obesity outbreak in America is disgusting as fuck and seeing a girl with an old school eating disorder, and not the kind of eating disorder my wife has that leaves the buffet owner crying in the corner after she wipes him out of fried chicken, but the kind of eating disorder where a bitch is lightheaded, dizzy with terrible breath and rotting teeth from when girls starve themselves or make themselves puke, is fucking hot…cuz not only are they too weak to run away from you, but they are also fun to get naked…while fat chicks like my wife are only good for paying your fucking rent cuz they are too scared you’ll leave them at a time in their life that they know no one else would ever step up and takeover the role of “cock giver”….so girls like Nadine Coyle and her weight loss needs to be celebrated Pics via PacificCoastNews

Toyota Demands Retraction and Apology From ABC News Over Manufactured Death Ride [Threats]

Toyota’s general counsel is calling on ABC News president David Westin to retract and apologize for a cocked-up story by America’s Wrongest Reporter, Brian Ross . Last month, Ross filed a report featuring a test conducted by David Gilbert, an Illinois professor who claimed to have found a way to induce unintended acceleration in Toyotas without triggering an error code that would allow mechanics to diagnose the problem. The exercise was supposed to prove that it’s theoretically possible for Toyotas to accelerate without command and then show no sign of having done so later on. Ross himself took a little on-camera death ride. And to make it seem even scarier, he took a staged shot of a surging tachometer taken while the car was parked and stitched it in to the piece to make it look like it was happening while he was driving . ABC News later changed the online version of the story after we asked them about the fakery. The story had other problems, according to Toyota: As the company demonstrated in a lengthy online rebuttal, Gilbert’s test almost certainly can’t be replicated under real-world conditions . He essentially rewired a Toyota to do what he wanted it to do—accelerate without command and without generating an error code—which is kind of like leaving the gas on a stove on for a few hours and lighting a match to prove that America’s kitchens are littered with millions of ticking timebombs. Engineers from Stanford working on Toyota’s behalf were able to rewire a Subarus, Honda, Chevrolet, and Ford in the same manner. And Ross didn’t disclose in his report that Gilbert had previously been paid as a consultant by Sean Kane, an investigator working for plaintiff’s lawyers in lawsuits against Toyota, and has an agreement with Kane paying him $150 an hour for work “going forward.” In the March 11 letter, a copy of which was provided to Gawker by a source close to Toyota, the company says Ross “singularly failed in his basic duty as a journalist to disclose material information about Professor Gilbert that would have directly influenced his credibility with the audience.” It also accuses him of “rush[ing] out his report on the eve of important congressional hearings concerning Toyota” and failing to offer the company an opportunity to examine Gilbert’s test before responding. Indeed, on February 23, the day after Ross’ story aired, Gilbert testified before the Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, and the death-ride came up. Read the full letter, which ends with the veiled boilerplate threat that “Toyota reserves the right to take any and every appropriate step to protect and defend the reputation of our company and its products from irresponsible and inaccurate claims,” below. A good reporter knows when he gets letters like this that he’s doing his job. Unfortunately, Brian Ross is not a good reporter. And he’s been off the radar at a particularly sensitive time—Ross hasn’t covered Toyota since the furor over his report erupted. An ABC News spokesman says he’s in the midst of a “long-planned vacation,” and that ABC is “in receipt of Toyota’s letter. Our lawyers are looking at it, and we will respond.”

American Idol: The Corrections [Recaps]

Well, that was more like it, no? After last week’s horrifying — truly horrifying! — bloodbath eliminations, yesterday we saw three deserving singtestants shoved into the bottom three and the worst of the bunch was sent home. I’m sure Lacey Brown is a perfectly nice person and all, but homegirl just did not have the chops to be among the Final 12 on America’s most celebrated electoral process. Many brilliant scientists have gone mad trying to decipher just how the Idol voting really works, so I won’t try to figure out why it was that Lacey and two deserving companions — Paige Miles and Whizzenpoof Spizzwinks — were in the bottom three this week and yet managed to squeak past three far more deserving contestants just seven days ago. But just know that it happened and that this is a good thing and hopefully things will progress in a similar fashion. It’s not too late to save America! Speaking of saving, they’re bringing back the Judges’ Save. Yeah, that old clam. The thing about the Judges’ Save is that it’s dumb. It’s just plain dumb. And it’s also kind of cruel to watch some never-gonna-be-rescued kid warble for their life while Simon and Randy and Ellen and that dung beetle pretend to seriously discuss whether or not they should keep her around. These people are judges on a reality show because they are not actors, so making them try to act once a week is an exercise in cruel futility. Mostly Simon just makes jokes and probably tells people little anecdotes about what Ryan did in the dressing rooms this morning, while Kara closes her eyes, squeezes them so so tight, and wishes that she was in the competition this year, she would do so well, just you see Mr. Fuller, just raise the age limit, just once, please Mr. Fuller? So that was that. I’m sure that terrified legions of Teen Texterz will now circle the giggle-wagons around Whizzenpoof and he will be carried, Hercules-like, up to the golden thrones of Olympus, borne on the zitty backs of Mallory and all her friends. Or I don’t know! Again, trying to find pattern or thread in American Idol voting is like searching for meaning in a Kara DioGuardi song. All you end up with is a bunch of mountains and stars and hopes and reaching and none of it makes much sense at all. Your lesbian aunt Karen David Cook came back and sang yet another strangely dated ditty, so that was good. When I went to the Idols Live! concert in Worcester, MA two frittered-away summers ago, he was acting like he was Bono or something. Standing on railings and raising his hands in the air as if he controlled the whims and shrieks of the universe, not just those of a few hundred teen New Englanders and they’re about-to-shoot-themselves parents at the Worcester Centrum. (I was there strictly for research/ironic purposes, I promise you. Also: Jason Castroooooooooo.) Anyway! Somebody named Orpheus or Orkin or something came out and screeched something at as for a while, so that was really unpleasant. And then with a great thudding and falling down the stairs came Ke$ha, stumbling like a bargain basement homemade drag Lady Gaga around the stage, yelling about various things and continuing to shill for the Jack Daniels corporation. Then people with giant TVs for heads came out and did a dance with her and if any parents were watching with their kids, they probably sighed and looked down at their daughter and her weird friend Mallory clasping their hands and swaying back and forth in delight and they felt the weary press of years and tastes and they thought about September girls and December boys, and somewhere up in the night sky a star fizzed and winked and the world was, as miraculously as ever, room enough for all of it.
