Paola and Russ Mayfield are a 90 Day Fiance couple that keeps on going. They have their controversies, sure, but they love each other and stay together. Usually, when it comes to Paola and Russ, any disagreements see fans taking sides. Some say that Russ is too jealous or controlling, others say that Paola should quit modeling. That sort of thing. This time, these two have stirred up a very different sort of controversy. Paola Mayfield and Russ are an attractive couple. But are their Halloween costumes problematic and offensive? The short answer is: yes. That doesn’t mean that we aren’t still huge Paola fans. In fact, we were rooting for Paola to win Maxim ‘s contest , which could be an amazing boost to her modeling career. But dressing as Native Americans for Halloween is a big no-no. It’s just below blackface and Nazi symbols on the list of what to never, ever wear. Why? Because of America’s history of genocide against Native Americans, basically. Native Americans are still heavily marginalized, but white Americans love to adopt their symbols as their own. A general guide to life is: If a marginalized person tells you that what you’re doing is kinda screwed up, don’t get defensive. Just ask how you can change. Anyway, apparently none of this crossed Russ and Paola’s minds as they donned their couples costumes and got into double trouble. Paola shared the photos on Instagram, and the backlash in the comments was immediate: One comment read: “Not a fan of this costume at all! disgusting. Next year go as ketchup and mustard. Leave the traditional wear to the people that actually!!!! wear it for their cultures! Sickening people still think this is okay. Not a fan of miss @paola_mayfield so much anymore. #dobetter” We don’t know that one needs to stop being her fan, but that’s every individual’s choice. Here are some other comments: “Ummm, cultural appropriation much?” “Agree! It is disrespectful!! I am disappointed again!!” “It’s not an issue about sensitivity. It’s an issue of DISRESPECT of a people/culture as well as an APPROPRIATION by the dominant culture who has sought out to eliminate Native American people since the 1400s.” “Oh honey. No.” “Wtf?!? Not ok!!!!” “Tasteless, Native regalia is not a Halloween costume.” As you can see, some of those commenters tried to explain. Others just expressed their disgust. A few thought to differentiate between Paola and Russ. “Ah yes a white guy in native headdress and an over sexualized Native American woman…this is not okay.” One repeated a helpful motto: “Its a Culture NOT A COSTUME!!” Oh, and some of the commenters were Nativa Americans, for whom this issue hits very close to home. “My culture is not your costume @paola_mayfield .. this is so sad and offensive.” As you can imagine, there were opposing opinions presented, too. These were folks from the “who cares if it’s bad, I don’t want to change my behavior or think about how my actions impact others” camp. And, just like during the 2016 election, these people were out in force. “You guys look great! Too bad the world is so sensitive these days that even halloween costumes r censored!” Costumes aren’t censored, that’s not what that word means. But people can and should make wise choices about what they wear. “And here come the PC offended ….” People love to misuse “politically correct,” which is a largely meaningless term that’s usually used by people who just aren’t interested in being better people. “Halloween isn’t about representing a cultures struggle it’s about having fun! People are so worried about hurting feelings that nothing is allowed anymore.” That commenter, who apparently forgets that Native Americans exist and might have less fun in the face of such a mocking costume, continued. “I’m from Canada … and there are still indigenous costumes sold and worn. “I think they have beautiful traditional costume and choosing to dress up in one is not disrespectful in anyway. What are people ‘allowed’ to dress up as now a days. Geez! Everything will offend someone.” It’s worth noting that there are literally thousands of Native American women missing in Canada without any explanation. Our polite neighbors to the north aren’t a better authority on how to treat indigenous folks. Another commenter added hyperbole: “People read into way to much now if someone wears a feather in their hat it’s called discrimination I could add so many other examples but it would take me forever get over it people look at it as fun dressing up just love live enjoy #tomuch hate in this world” There are basically endless costume choices. Don’t dress as an outfit to either ridicule or sexualize a marginalized person. There aren’t many rules, but that’s one of them, and it’s super easy to follow. “Get over it. Everything has to be an upset and about race these days. Stop being so up tight and sensitive. It’s not a big deal. There are better things to be up in arms about…” If there’s one thing that minority groups like Native Americans love to hear, it’s “get over it.” That’s right up there with “it’s just a little genocide.” In case you’re concerned about the state of the world (which, actually, you should be) because these comments are so polarized, know that some commenters understand nuance. “She probably doesn’t know. She’s from a different culture.” And that, we think, might be the crux of it. Russ wasn’t able to predict the backlash, we suppose, because he’s a conservative white guy from Oklahoma. That’s not an excuse, mind you. Paola, however, is Columbian. She may have somewhat fair skin, but she is from Central America. She’s not quite. While that doesn’t make Paola part of any Plains Native American ethnic groups and doesn’t fully excuse the costume, it’s something to keep in mind. More to the point, as one of the commenters stated, Paola is still adapting to American culture and was almost certainly not aware that this costume would invite backlash. However, this time a group of students thought that mocking the brutal death of Baltimore’s Freddie Gray by police would make an even better costume than all the racist ones in the past. In a report by The Grio , a group of students from a collection of schools dressed in orange jumpsuits with Freddie Gray’s name on the back of one and a photo caption that featured the N-word. Via The Grio: Several students have come under fire for racially insensitive Halloween costumes, including one portraying Freddie Gray. According to the Baltimore Sun, a graduate of the Boys’ Latin School of Maryland wore an orange jumpsuit with “Freddie Gray” on the back of it during a party off-campus at the College of Charleston in South Carolina. Another group of students, from Gilman School and Roland Park Country School, were pictured wearing orange jumpsuits, with a caption posted to social media reading, “N—-s broke out,” according to CBS. Another student, this one at St. Paul’s School, was pictured with a swastika and a racial slur painted on his bare back. Following the release of the photos St. Paul’s School stated that they do not tolerate any form of hate or discrimination. Officials from the other schools which the students attend have vowed to investigate the images. Meanwhile Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake responded on social media, writing, “Heartbroken. Disappointed. Frustrated.” The mayor also mentioned her daughter, who attends Roland Park, writing, “It will undoubtedly be a rough day for my daughter tomorrow. District Judge William LaFortune ruled Wednesday to allow for the first-degree manslaughter case brought against former Oklahoma police officer Betty Shelby to be removed from her record after she asked that it be expunged, NBC BLK reports. LaFortune has ordered that all documents connected to Shelby’s case be sealed and kept with the court, where they’ll only be accessible through court order. State law also allows that the documents can be destroyed after 10 years. While government and law enforcement would still have access to the record because Shelby would likely disclose it on job applications, other agencies wil not be able to find the case in a background search according to Shelby’s defense attorney, Shannon McMurray. “This crime does not exist for employment application purposes,” McMurray said, saying that it was important for Shelby “to have that smear on her name removed from public view.” “Like any other citizen who is acquitted, Betty Jo Shelby was entitled to have her record sealed and expunged,” the attorney said. “Betty … continues to work to try and serve her community and prays for everyone’s continued healing.” Shelby petitioned for her record to be expunged after her acquittal earlier this year for the September 2016 killing of 40-year-old Terence Crutcher. You may recall, Crutcher’s SUV was stopped in the middle of the street when he was approached by Shelby, who claimed during her trial that she was scared because he appeared to be under the influence of drugs, didn’t obey her commands and looked like he was reaching into his vehicle. You probably also may recall the footage of Crutcher from the patrol car dashboard adn police helicopter that showed him with his hands in the air. She resigned in July, saying she felt isolated from other police officers and was later worn in as a reserve sheriff’s deputy in nearby Rogers County. If only this case didn’t fit so neatly fit the narrative of an America constantly striving to preserve the purity of white women.

Nothing can compare to the pain of losing a child. Tragically, two Little Women: Dallas cast members can relate to this heartbreak on a personal level, as Caylea suffered a miscarriage when she was six weeks pregnant and Emily lost a baby at just three months old. There are truly no words for these painful experiences. But the two reality stars have come up with a few over the course of Season 2, at one point getting into an argument over Caylea disrespecting the memory of Emily's son. That was how Emily interpreted it, at least, when Caylea compared her miscarriage to the death of Emily's baby boy. The co-stars argued this point rather passionately a few weeks ago, but the disagreement will reach new heights on this week's installment of this popular Lifetime series. Or new lows, depending on how you look at it. After telling Caylea that she spat on the memory of her child, Emily goes right ahead and… spits on Caylea. We mean this literally. She simply spits right in the face of her co-star, much to the shock of the other Little Women, who all stand around silently as these two keep going at it. Caylea refuses to back down. What's the most recent news that we've heard from this guy? Probably when Steven Seagal slammed the NFL for “disrespecting the flag.” There were a couple of problems with his complaints. One, that's not what the NFL protests are about — they're not sticking up their middle finger at America, they're using the opportunity to protest the killing of unarmed black men by the very police who are supposed to protect them and enforce the law. At this point, we feel like anyone who honestly wants to understand the situation already knows that. Two, if Steven Seagal loves America so much, why does he live in Russia? Russia isn't just another country — it's a hostile foreign power that has actively worked against the United States time after time. And yet Steven Seagal seems to absolutely adore Russia's shameless despot, Vladimir Putin. We don't really need to rehash the election interference that almost no one is denying, right? Or the habit of Vladimir Putin's political enemies have of being poisoned or otherwise dying? (The same happens to journalists investigating Putin and his interests) So Steven Seagal has some pretty controversial opinions, to say the least. That is not, however, the most recent thing that we've heard about Steven Seagal. In the aftermath of the Weinstein sexual harassment scandal , more and more actresses (and actors!) have been coming forward with their #MeToo stories . In many cases, they've revealed instances of sexual harassment and sexual assault. Some women have come forward to add their names to the lists of Harvey Weinstein's accusers. Others have, for a host of reasons, declined to name the men who harassed or assaulted them. Actress Jenny McCarthy, perhaps best known for her ludicrous “medical” beliefs that have mad her name synonymous with the anti-vaxx movement, recently came forward in a podcast. She alleges that Steven Seagal told her to take off her dress during a casting call for one of his films. Just so that you know, folks, that is not appropriate. And Lisa Guerrero, who is now a journalist but was once an actress, told The Hollywood Reporter of her own Steven Seagal encounter . She alleges that in the '90s, Steven Seagal summoned her to his Beverly Hills home for an audition. That's a little weird, so she insisted upon the casting director also being present, so it should be fine, right? Well … Steven Seagal not only seemed surprised to see that casting director with her, but he answered the door in a silk kimono. Now, we're sure that kimonos are very comfy, but if you're not a college student, you should probably put on something other than a robe when people come over. Especially if it's a work thing. Instead, she describes how Steven Seagal sat on a throne-like chair in his robe and watched her audition for 10 minutes. It was fine — he didn't touch her or expose himself. But … what would have happened if she hadn't brought the casting director? While the brief audio clip, which you can listen to below, doesn't provide a whole lot of context, it's pretty damning on its own. You hear Steven Seagal's own voice as he speaks to a male interviewer. “The few times that I had a hard time was usually with women.” That's not a great way to talk about … anything. “When somebody is on tour, a promotional tour, he’s there to talk about his film, not about who he’s f—ing or who he would like to f— or who his wife was with ten years ago.” Those are the explicit versions of normal questions to ask celebrities. “They should go into pornography or something else instead of journalism if they want to hear that s–t. They're a bunch of a—-.” They should “go into pornography” … what?! Does he mean that they should be porn stars or interview porn stars? Both suggestions are absurd. He has some lovely things to say about some unnamed woman. “I won't even dare tell you what I think it is. It was just some dumb b–ch that is a liar and wanted to be sensational.” If someone is saying “some dumb b–ch” and not jokingly referring to themselves or making a totally okay inside joke with a friend … that tells you a lot about their opinions of women. Steven Seagal's decision to style his home and much of his clothing in an Asian manner is fine. He's a little eccentric, sure. But it's fine. As we all learned in 2016, an audio recording of a man with extensive Russian ties saying offensive things about women doesn't necessarily mean that he'll be negatively impacted.
