Whitney Houston Death Certificate Released, Uninformative

The official death certificate for Whitney Houston has been filed with Los Angeles County and made available to the public – but it reveals very little about the singer that we didn’t already know. The document runs through the basics – name, date of birth, occupation (“entertainer”), marital status, next of kin ( Bobbi Kristina ) and place of death – and also confirms that she’ll be buried at the Fairview Cemetery in Westfield, New Jersey. But it lists “deferred” pending further investigation as the cause of Whitney’s death. It’s strongly believed, of course, that Houston died because s he mixed prescription pills with alcohol , but no specific drugs have been confirmed. Autopsy results may not be back for weeks. Below, meanwhile, watch Janet Jackson speak to Anderson Cooper about this tragedy. Janet Jackson Speaks on Whitney Houston

Taylor Swift Reveals ‘Hunger Games’ Nods In ‘Safe & Sound’ Video

Just-premiered clip includes plenty of imagery from the best-selling book series to tide fans over until film’s release. By John Mitchell, with reporting by Sway Calloway Taylor Swift Photo: MTV News Talking exclusively to MTV News following the premiere of her new video for “Safe & Sound” from “The Hunger Games,” Taylor Swift revealed that the clip contains several references to the best-selling YA book series that fans should recognize. “I felt like I was really needing to pay tribute to this movie and tell this story,” Swift said. “There’s this moment in the music video where I find this mockingjay pin and hold it up.” For those who have not read the books, the mockingjay pin is one of the most iconic symbols from the series. It was given to the main character, Katniss Everdeen (played in the film by Jennifer Lawrence), as a token to take into the arena to remind her of her home district — District 12. The mockingjay and the pin itself are both symbols of rebellion in the books. The mockingjay is a species of bird inadvertently bred when the Capitol released “jabberjays” throughout the nation of Panem in an attempt to spy on its citizens. After the mission failed and the citizens of Panem learned how to feed lies to Capitol spies through the jabberjays, the Capitol ended the project but the birds bred with mockingbirds in the wild, creating the mockingjay, which the Capitol was never able to eradicate. We won’t spoil the rest, but the third book in the series is titled “Mockingjay,” and that isn’t just a reference to the bird or the pin anymore. “Having a music video with that much symbolism in it is something I’m not used to,” Swift continued. “Everyone who is a ‘Hunger Games’ fans knows what it means when there’s fire in the trees and they know what it means for the house to be burnt and they know what it means for the ‘Hunger Games’ pin to be covered in rust and old. Everybody can take their own meaning away from it, but it all goes back to the symbolism of the book.” To avoid spoiling the books and film, the only bit here that we’ll address are the burning trees, which can be seen throughout Swift’s video and briefly in the film’s second trailer. In the arena, the Gamesmakers use fire to keep the tributes from hiding in trees and to push groups of them into the same area so they can fight to the death for all to see. Swift’s “Safe & Sound” video has us psyched for the release of “The Hunger Games,” due March 23. “I’m now sort of like an infomercial for it,” Swift, a fan of the books, joked to MTV News about the series. Pop star will be laid to rest at New Hope Baptist Church in her native Newark, New Jersey, with no planned wake. By Rob Markman Whitney Houston Photo: Ebet Roberts/ Getty Images After much speculation, the plans for Whitney Houston ‘s funeral have been set. The fallen pop diva will be laid to rest in her native Newark, New Jersey, a week after her death in a Los Angeles hotel room. A Houston family rep confirmed to MTV News that Houston’s invitation-only funeral will take place at New Baptist Church at noon on Saturday. Los Angeles County coroner officials completed Houston’s autopsy Sunday, and her body was released to her family the very next day and then flown back east, according to CNN. There have been rumors that there will be a public memorial at Newark’s Prudential Center with a ceremony similar to Michael Jackson’s high-profile farewell, but USA Today is reporting that such a plan was never in place and as of right now, the funeral is the only scheduled sendoff for the 48-year-old star. As a youth in Newark, Houston attended New Hope Baptist Church. In a statement issued to MTV News on Sunday, the Houston family expressed their grief in this trying time. “We are devastated by the loss of our beloved Whitney. This is an unimaginable tragedy, and we will miss her terribly,” the statement read. “We appreciate the outpouring of love and support from her fans and friends.” The cause of Houston’s death is still unknown. Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter of the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office continues to quell any speculation. “I know there are reports that she maybe was drowned or did she overdose, but we won’t make a final determination until all the tests are in,” he told CNN. Don Cornelius Death Ruled a Suicide

Coroner officially rules death of ‘Soul Train’ creator a suicide. By Gil Kaufman Don Cornelius Photo: Diamond/ WireImage The Los Angeles coroner’s office ruled on Tuesday that former “Soul Train” host and creator Don Cornelius
died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Cornelius, 75, was found shot at his Mulholland Drive home last Wednesday (February 1) morning by his son. According to the Associated Press , the Los Angeles County Coroner’s office made the suicide determination after conducting an autopsy on Cornelius’ body on Friday. A final report will be issued pending the results of toxicology tests, which could take several weeks. After responding to a call from Cornelius’ son, police were quickly able to rule out foul play in the host’s death. A former radio disc jockey, Cornelius created, wrote and produced “Soul Train,” a popular dance/music show which spotlighted soul, R&B, and later, rap music. “Soul Train” was patterned after Dick Clark’s “American Bandstand,” but it helped to shine a light on black artists who many times didn’t get the recognition they deserved. James Brown, Aretha Franklin and Michael Jackson all appeared on the show as well as more contemporary artists like Chris Brown, Alicia Keys and Ludacris. Friends and fans celebrated Cornelius’ life in Harlem on Saturday, as well as on Broadway, where a flash mob descended on Times Square to dance. Last week, son Tony Cornelius released a statement asking for fans to respect the family’s privacy. “We thank all the well-wishers and the fans who have supported the `Soul Train’ legacy. Love, Peace and Soul,” he said in the statement that included his dad’s legendary sign-off from the show. Related Videos Iconic Host Don Cornelius Dead At 75

Gabriel Aubry to Attend Anger Management Counseling

Anger Management. It’s more than just the name of a terrible Adam Sandler movie and Charlie Sheen’s next vehicle. It’s also the way in which Gabriel Aubry hopes to maintain contact with his daughter. Following a reportedly ugly incident in which Halle Berry’s ex either shoved his nanny while she was cradling daughter Nahla, or at least screamed at her, Aubry has agreed to enroll in anger management courses. The move came after he and Berry met for hours yesterday with representatives from the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services. Sources tell TMZ Aubry still insists he didn’t touch the nanny, but a law enforcement official close to the case says: “Gabriel has a little bit of a temper, but the good news is that he realizes it.” Aubry is not free from potential charges or consequences, however. He and Berry will still convene in front of a judge on Monday morning and it’s possible Gabriel will be barred from seeing his child until a criminal investigation is complete.

Paula Patton has a mission that’s apparently impossible: paying taxes… What’s owed: The IRS filed a $492,583 tax lien against Paula Patton and Robin Thicke on Dec. 28 with the Los Angeles County Recorder of Deeds. The address on the tax lien is a Post Office box in Santa Monica, Calif. Here’s their home in Los Angeles. Buuuuuut it doesn’t seem that they were avoiding the tax man. Their rep said this weekend: “They were just made aware of the issue and it is being taken care of immediately.” Paula has been in tons of movies and Robin just released a new album, we’re just the stacks are there to pay these bills. We hope. Source

Iowa Caucus Results: Mitt Romney Wins By Eight Votes Over Rick Santorum!

The closest Iowa caucus results in history produced a near draw, with Mitt Romney winning by just eight votes over Rick Santorum and Ron Paul a close third. Romney, considered the favorite in the Republican presidential race quest, did not notch a commanding win that could have ended the primary process early. However, a win’s a win, and after a year in which one candidate after another sought to be the conservative alternative to him, a pretty impressive one at that. Even more remarkable was the finish of Rick Santorum, whose candidacy was so moribund just weeks ago that many wondered why he was still in the race. The former Pennsylvania Senator was neck-and-neck with Romney, the one-time Governor of Massachusetts, for all of Tuesday night and into this morning. Romney being declared the winner by a mere eight ballots early Wednesday. Rep. Ron Paul of Texas was a close third with 21 percent of the caucus votes. “We will go on,” he said in an upbeat speech. “There is nothing to be ashamed of.” The race was so close, Romney couldn’t even claim victory in his speech. With 99 percent of the vote counted, he and Santorum each had 24.6 percent. ‘‘We also feel it’s been a great victory for us here,’’ Romney said early today, before the final votes were tallied. “Onto New Hampshire, we’ve got work to do.” ‘‘Thank you so much Iowa,’’ said Santorum, who is also off to N.H. ‘‘You, by standing up and not compromising ….. have taken the first step of taking back this country.’’ The GOP nominating process continues with the New Hampshire primary next Tuesday, followed by the South Carolina primary Saturday, January 19. The former favors Romney heavily, the latter not so much. Santorum and Newt Gingrich, who placed fourth last night in Iowa, will be contesting it hard. And Ron Paul … you can never count out Ron Paul. You may soon count out Texas Gov. Rick Perry, though. After finishing fifth in Iowa, he announced that he was returning to Texas to assess his candidacy. Last night’s Iowa caucus results: Mitt Romney: 24.6%

Harry Burkhart Arrested in Los Angeles Arson Spree

Harry Burkhart, a 24-year-old German national, was the man arrested by police earlier this week in connection with the deadly arson spree in Los Angeles. A string of arson fires put Los Angeles residents on edge over the holidays and caused millions in damage, and officials believe Burkhart is the perpetrator. They also believe he did it because he felt his mom was being mistreated. Burkhart was arrested early Monday morning driving a minivan in W. Hollywood. Inside were fire starter sticks. Once he was in custody, the fires ceased. Sheriff Lee Baca called the suspect the “most dangerous arsonist in Los Angeles County that I can recall,” after battling 50 blazes in the preceding days. While authorities don’t yet have a definite motive, they say it appears Harry Burkhart was outraged about his mother’s pending deportation to Germany. Dorothee Burkhart was arrested December 28 on a provisional warrant from Germany, and the arson spree began just after she was taken into custody. At a court hearing Tuesday, Dorothee, who is wanted on fraud charges , cried for her son – and claimed he suffers from mental illness, the LA Times reports. “My first question is, where is my son?” she shouted, telling a federal judge in broken English that her son “is mental ill.” That would be an understatement. During a recent immigration hearing about Dorothee’s case, her son ranted against the U.S. and its policies, according to the Los Angeles Times . An officer working on Dorothee’s case saw footage of the suspected arsonist, recognized Burkhart, and contacted authorities, the AP reports. Police stress that the investigation is not complete. “We are confident in our investigation, but we have a long way to go,” L.A. Police Chief Charlie Becks said.
