Honored in Bosnia at the 18th Sarajevo Film Festival, Angelina Jolie was named Honorary Citizen of Sarajevo for her work on In the Land of Blood and Honey . The film, written and directed by Jolie, tells the story of the city’s war through the relationship between a Bosnian Serb man and a Bosnian Muslim woman. Appearing sans Brad Pitt (but rocking the engagement ring he gave her), she received an Honorary Citizen of Sarajevo award from the Prime Minister, Mr. Fikret Music.
Brad Pitt has been a vocal advocate for gay rights, so it came as a bit of a surprise to learn that his mom write an editorial in her local Missouri newspaper that supports presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s conservative views on homosexuality. Springfield’s News-Leader confirms that the author is Brad’s mom . Jane Pitt’s letter was primarily penned to express support for Romney, in response to a previous News-Leader editorial urging readers to shun the Republican’s bid to unseat President Barack Obama because of his Mormon beliefs. In her response, which was published on Tuesday, she wrote: “I think any Christian should spend much time in prayer before refusing to vote for a family man with high morals, business experience, who is against abortion, and shares Christian conviction concerning homosexuality just because he is Mormon.” “Anyone who does not vote or writes in a name is casting a vote for Romney’s opponent, Barack Hussein Obama – a man who sat in Jeremiah Wright’s church for years and did not hold a public ceremony to mark the National Day of Prayer.” Obama, she writes, is “a liberal who supports the killing of unborn babies and same-sex marriage. I hope all Christians give their vote prayerful consideration because voting is a sacred privilege and a serious responsibility.” It was more pro-Romney and anti-Obama than anti-gay, but nevertheless, Jane Pitt makes her views on same-sex marriage and abortion clear. In any case, it’s a total 180 from the views shared by Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, who have been ardent proponents of gay marriage for years. Last year, following the passage of marriage-equality laws in New York, Brad said, “No state should decide who can marry and who cannot.” “Thanks to the tireless work of so many, someday soon this discrimination will end and every American will be able to enjoy their equal right.” Brad and Jane Pitt clearly both have strong opinions on the subject, and both have a right to those opinions. Angelina Jolie marked the 20th of June – World Refugee Day 2012 – with a donation of $100,000 for the U.N.’s work in helping Syrian refugees. “Unfortunately, the world is producing displaced people faster than it is producing solutions to displacement. And the solutions are not exclusively humanitarian, they are also political,” the 37-year-old actress said in a statement. “The international community should rededicate itself to preventing conflict, addressing it when it erupts, and solving it more quickly, for that is the only way to create durable solutions for the refugees whose strength inspires us on this World Refugee Day.” Seeing Angelina Jolie as Maleficent is very cool, but seeing her continue to wield her fame and fortune for important causes is an inspiration. Her full message appears below: UNHCR believes even 1 person forced to flee is too many. And it’s true. Every individual refugee matters. Each has their own story. Each has suffered and survived more than I could ever bear. And yet, they rise up to live another day. We risk forgetting the individual when we speak in numbers, but the numbers tell an important story. In the past year 4.3 million people have become displaced. It’s no surprise that the success of the Twilight movies has made Kristen Stewart a pretty penny, but is she Hollywood’s biggest salaried star? That’s the word from Forbes, which ranked her at the top of its annual list of highest-paid actresses with a whopping $34.5 million in earnings over the past year—just barely surpassing Cameron Diaz who came in second with a $34 million haul. And Breaking Dawn Part 2 isn’t even out yet! So who knows what Bella Swan’s alter-ego will collect once box-office returns come in for the mega-franchise’s fourth and final film. The 37-year-old actress always makes time for those near and dear to her heart. In this case, that means the refugees of the planet Earth. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees special envoy is helping raise awareness for World Refugee Day, coming up June 20. In a new PSA, Jolie points out that there are over 43 million refugees around the world. That’s 43 million human beings displaced from their homeland. Of those in need, UNHCR provides life-saving assistance to nearly 34 million. The organization’s goal is to share the poignant stories of refugees so that people across America will extend their generosity, concern and support. Joan Rivers’ New Book Has Crass Jokes Regarding Whitney Houston’s Death Why can’t people just let Whitney R.I.P.??? Comedian Joan Rivers is taking some heat for two Whitney Houston jokes that reportedly appear in her upcoming book, “I Hate Everyone … Starting With Me.” The Village Voice reports that in a section on travel, Rivers writes: “I hate Houston … it’s crawling with bugs. Oh, wait, that’s Whitney Houston; I’m sorry, my bad. (Can I just mention that Whitney looked fabulous at the Grammys? She was in mahogany from head to toe.)” Houston, 48, was found dead in her Beverly Hills, Calif. hotel bathtub on Feb. 11, the day before the Grammys. The jokes shouldn’t be a surprise to those who read the book’s description on the website of publisher Penguin, which reads, “uncensored and totally uninhibited (Rivers gives) the best of her worst to First Ladies, closet cases, hypocrites, Hollywood, feminists, and overrated historical figures,” and goes on to call the book an “honest, unabashedly hilarious love letter to the hater in all of us.” Also in February, Rivers was criticized by some for snarky remarks she made about Houston’s wardrobe on the E! show “Fashion Police.” According to Women’s Wear Daily, Rivers said, “Am I sorry (Houston) died? Of course I am, for God’s sake.” She also said “If Angelina Jolie died tomorrow, I would still say she was anorexic.” After Houston’s death, Rivers tweeted, “Whitney Houston. ‘I haven’t changed at all,’ 19-year-old actor tells MTV News of his life post-‘Hunger Games.’ By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Josh Hutcherson Photo: FilmMagic Ever since “The Hunger Games” toppled the box office earlier this year, one would think that Josh Hutcherson would find it hard to go about the life he led before the film. As it turns out, not much has changed for the laid-back 19-year-old. While there has been a lot of pandemonium around the movie, the actor himself has been mostly left alone by fans of the franchise. And he’s totally cool with it. “I’ve changed a lot. I wear nothing but high-end designer suits. I fly private everywhere,” he joked to MTV News about his superstar status. “I haven’t changed at all. “I was expecting it to be a huge difference and it hasn’t been, and I can’t tell you how relieved that I am,” he added. “It’s been so low-key and people who do recognize me have been awesome, cool and not crazy.” With all the hype that has surrounded the film, Hutcherson had certain expectations for how his life would change. “I did for sure [think it would be different]. Everybody was telling me ‘It’s gonna be crazy.’ I go everywhere all the time and nobody stops me,” he said. “I’m good with what I have.” One thing Hutcherson doesn’t seem to want to give up is his love for getting inked. “The last one I got was six months ago. I have like an anchor ship creation on my back; it’s like an old sailor Jerry tattoo kind of thing. I love that old, traditional style,” he said. Hutcherson said he’d love to get more ink, but before he gets any full-body tattoos like Angelina Jolie, he wants to make sure it won’t interfere with his acting. “I need to have the kind of career Angelina Jolie has first,” he said. “They’re not gonna hire guys covered in tattoos. I need to make sure they hire me first.” Well, Hutcherson has some downtime until he hits the set of “Catching Fire” later this summer if he wants to squeeze one more tattoo in.
