GK Films is tailoring script for the ‘Salt’ star. By Adam Rosenberg Angelina Jolie Photo: Pascal Le Segretain/Getty Images Angelina Jolie’s schedule is rapidly filling up. Earlier this week, it was revealed that she’ll be writing and directing her first feature, a love story set during the Bosnian War, which she’ll also produce with Graham King. Now, she may have a new starring role coming up as well, for a movie that King will also produce. The producer’s GK Films is developing a feature adaptation of the 2009 U.K. miniseries “Unforgiven” for Jolie to star in, Deadline reports. A director hasn’t been set yet, but “The Usual Suspects” writer Christopher McQuarrie is taking care of the script. “Unforgiven,” not to be confused with the Oscar-winning 1992 Western starring Clint Eastwood, follows a woman who is newly released from jail after serving a 15-year sentence for the murder of two police officers. The killing happened when attempts were made to evict her and her family from their home. Now free, all the ex-con wants is to live in peace, a desire not easily fulfilled thanks to a revenge plot staged by one of her victims’ two sons. The original U.K. version aired as a three-part miniseries early last year. Suranne Jones starred as Ruth Slater, the role that Jolie is up for. Jones has done a fair bit of U.K. television, and is probably best known for her role as Karen McDonald on the soap opera “Coronation Street.” Jolie is having a strong year at the movies. Earlier this summer, she starred in the box-office hit “Salt,” a Russian-spy thriller that has so far grossed more than $200 million worldwide. In December she stars opposite Johnny Depp in “The Tourist,” a King-produced thriller directed by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck that was recently moved up from its previously planned 2011 release. Jolie will write, produce and direct a film set during the Bosnian War in the early ’90s. She is working on the flick with GK Films , which made the announcement on its website. The film, about a Bosnian woman and a Serbian military man who fall in love during the war, when the Bosniaks and Serbs were fighting each other, will serve as Jolie’s feature directorial debut, according to The Hollywood Reporter. GK Films says that actors of “various ethnicities from the region of the former Yugoslavia” will be cast. Jolie will not be in the film, and filming is expected to take place this fall, with no locations being announced due to security concerns. The Oscar winner, who serves as Goodwill Ambassador for the office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and frequently makes trips to the area, visited Sarajevo last weekend to discuss the refugee situation with some of the country’s leaders. “The film is a love story, not a political statement,” Jolie said in a statement released by the UNHCR during her visit to the region last week. “I would like to involve as many local people as possible and learn as much as I can.” GK Films produced her upcoming Johnny Depp co-starring release, “The Tourist,” set to hit theaters in December. But according to Forbes magazine, in the midst of her difficult times offscreen, the actress managed to rack up a huge financial payday and rise to the top as the highest-paid actress in Hollywood. Besting such rivals as Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon and Cameron Diaz, Bullock earned that distinction thanks to a pair of huge hits: “The Proposal,” which grossed $320 million; and “The Blind Side,” which racked up $310 million and helped her earn an Academy Award. While Bullock wisely agreed to take a pay cut from her usual fee to star in “Blind Side,” she got it back and then some in back-end pay, earning $56 million on both films between June 2009 and June 2010, according to Forbes. The magazine calculated its figures based on conversations with agents, managers, producers and lawyers. Next on the list was perennial girl-next-door Witherspoon, who banked $32 million despite not having a big-screen opening since “Four Christmases” bowed during the 2008 holiday season. But she made the #2 spot thanks to her upfront pay for two upcoming movies, “How Do You Know?” and the adaptation of “Water for Elephants,” co-starring “Twilight” hunk Robert Pattinson. She also earned cash for her role as an “ambassador” for Avon. Diaz tied Witherspoon at #2, also with $32 million, which she earned on the Tom Cruise film “Knight & Day” and her sizable income from the “Shrek” franchise, which has earned $2.8 billion to date. Aniston was at #4 with $27 million, which she earned from her appearance in the box-office disappointment “Love Happens,” as well as her upcoming roles in “The Switch” and the Adam Sandler-assisted “Just Go With It.” She also still gets residual checks from “Friends” and has her own perfume line and a lucrative deal with Smartwater. “Sex and the City” star Sarah Jessica Parker was at #5 with $25 million, rolling up cash from the movie franchise and profits from the series’ syndication rights, as well as her strong-selling perfume line and a deal to design clothes for Halston. The rest of the list: Julia Roberts ($20 million), Angelina Jolie ($20 million), Drew Barrymore ($15 million), Meryl Streep ($13 million) and “Twilight” star Kristen Stewart ($12 million). Somewhere midway through Phillip Noyce’s exhilarating, over-the-top yet strangely modest action-thriller Salt, Angelina Jolie, as on-the-run CIA agent Evelyn Salt, ducks into a ladies’ room to dress a nasty-looking flesh wound — with a maxi-pad. It’s an elegant and ingenious solution to a sticky problem. But then, Salt is a do-it-yourselfer, a resourceful spy who has been trained by the best. She can fashion last-minute weapons from common household items (fire-extinguisher flamethrower, anyone?) and leap off overpasses onto moving semi-trucks with the grace of a lemur (a creature that, with her wide-open, smoky-rimmed eyes, she somewhat resembles). Salt could surely, as an old perfume commercial — borrowing straight from Peggy Lee — used to say, bring home the bacon and fry it up in the pan. But who’d want to watch that?
