Angelina Jolie Reveals The Key To Being A Big-Screen Badass

‘A good gun helps,’ the ‘Salt’ star laughs. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Angelina Jolie in “Salt” Photo: Andrew Schwartz “She’s fearless.” So says producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura of “Salt” star Angelina Jolie . Even a bloody cut on her forehead, sustained during stunt work on the upcoming thriller, barely kept her away from the New York set. Nor did it keep her from jumping out of helicopters and off freeways during the rest of the shoot. From “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider” to “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” to “Wanted,” Jolie has executed her fair share of stunts before, but as the 35-year-old explained to MTV News, she takes a particular pleasure in such work these days.

Angelina Jolie Dishes On Her ‘Private Self’

‘Maybe that’s why I liked it so much, getting to play this character,’ she tells MTV News of her complex ‘Salt’ role. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Angelina Jolie Photo: MTV News The action/thriller “Salt” finds Angelina Jolie in a near-constant state of flux: first blond, then brunet; one minute a loyal CIA agent, the next on the run as an accused Russian spy. “Maybe that’s why I liked it so much, getting to play this character,” she told MTV News recently. “I got to be all different people all the time. I think there is [a complex] element to all of us. That’s why we like espionage.” A bit of complexity might be universal, but it’s just that sort of ambiguity that scared studios off from the script for so many years. Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura had been trying to sell the project as a Jason Bourne-style thriller to studios for years — for a while Tom Cruise was attached to star — but he couldn’t get anyone to green-light the movie. “One of the strengths of the movie is one of the things people were initially scared about, which is you don’t know at times if you should root for or against her,” di Bonaventura told us. “The script does not follow conventional rules.” Eventually, di Bonaventura switched gears entirely, re-conceiving Salt as a woman instead of a man and recruiting Jolie for the starring role. Much like her part in 2005’s “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” Jolie found in Salt a character whose purposely vague double life she could both exploit and understand on a personal level. “There’s a part of us that has a private self,” she said. “We also have these sides to us that maybe we think it’s not as much keeping secrets, but there’s that side that not everybody knows about you or things that you’re capable of that you haven’t yet explored, that you’re waiting to do when the opportunity arises.” As for the 35-year-old actress herself, she’s hopeful she still has a few secrets under wraps — like the true meaning of her newest tattoo — that will keep audiences guessing in the future. “I hope so,” Jolie laughed. “I’d be bored if there wasn’t something.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Salt.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Brangelina Will Get Married (Once the Kids Ask)!

Marriage is not happening for Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. They’ve made this abundantly clear with their comments and inaction over the years … but there’s one thing that could change their minds. Well, six things. “I think it would be hard to say no to the kids,” Angelina said this morning on Good Morning America in an excerpt of an interview airing tonight on Nightline . Not that we should hold our breath, as it ‘s not a huge priority for them, either. “They’re not asking,” Jolie says. “They are very aware that nothing’s missing.” Marriage or not, Jolie, who stars in the new spy thriller Salt, touches on other aspects of her family in the interview, including whether it will get any larger. Sounds like Brangelina is torn about the issue. OK! totally made this story up … but it could actually happen someday! “We always have this thing, first thing in the morning, where we’re really, really tired, and we look at each other and we wonder, Are we ever going to get sleep?” the Salt star says. “And yet we still love the idea of having more children.” Offering a glimpse into their daily routine, Jolie says she’s better at disciplining the girls, while Pitt is better at disciplining the boys. “I think girls and Daddy can just bat their eyes,” she says. “And the boys, funnily enough, can kind of get me.” Asked if she and Brad will grow old together, Angelina doesn’t hesitate: “Of course … We wouldn’t have six children if we weren’t absolutely sure of that.” She also describes the pandemonium of ordinary events such as breakfast: “We’re like bartenders. We’re like waiters,” she says of herself and her partner. “But we still, I think, are able to do it because we manage to have a great laugh. We do it together, and we find fun in it, and because of that, it doesn’t matter if you don’t get enough sleep. It’s an honor to take care of them.” Is she totally awesome or what?

Angliena Jolie Would ‘Love To’ Work With Tim Burton, Darren Aronofsky

The ‘Salt’ star tells MTV News she would ‘love to’ play evil Maleficent, be directed by Tim Burton, Darren Aronofsky. By Todd Gilchrist, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Angelina Jolie Photo: MTV News Angelina Jolie doesn’t make the press rounds often, so when the rare opportunity to speak to her does arise, you make the most of it. We grilled her for details about some of her upcoming projects. One of the rumored parts that seems exceptionally well-suited for the sultry star is the title role in “Maleficent” , a take on the “Sleeping Beauty” story told from the point of view of the slumbering princess’ nemesis. Asked whether she might be involved in the film — whose director’s chair may eventually be filled by “Alice in Wonderland” auteur Tim Burton — Jolie said she would definitely be interested. “I would love to,” Jolie told MTV News. “It’s all new and being discussed, but I loved her when I was a little girl. She was my favorite. Tim Burton, the chance to work with him would be extraordinary.” While we were on the topic of casting, Jolie opened up about Cleopatra , whom she’s been confirmed to play in a historical biopic. Jolie said a portrayal of the iconic Egyptian queen is long overdue, and she’s onboard as long as the circumstances are right. “I think if we can get the story right, and do the real story,” she said of a possible script. “I think there’s a lot about her that’s never been covered yet. So if we can do something original, we will.” Jolie’s name has also been attached to two other films: “Serena,” an adaptation of the Ron Rash novel to be directed by “The Wrestler” helmer Darren Aronofsky, and a cinematic portrayal of Kay Scarpetta, the protagonist in Patricia Cornwell’s best-selling book series. The actress didn’t seem to have much information about either feature, but prospects for “Serena” seemed to be a little more concrete. “We’ve talked about it, and I would love to work with Darren one day,” Jolie said, adding that the project itself was perhaps less important than her potential collaborator. “So if it’s not that, it will be something else. But I think he’s one of my favorites.” Scarpetta, on the other hand, seems further down the road. “I think they’re writing a script,” Jolie said. “It’s in development,” she laughed, acknowledging she was short on news. “It’s all very in development.” What role would you like to see Angelina Jolie tackle next? Angelina Jolie Says Her New Tattoo Is ‘For Brad’

While the ‘Salt’ star tells MTV News she’s ‘bad at hiding secrets,’ she won’t reveal what her latest ink says. By Todd Gilchrist, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Angelina Jolie Photo: MTV News It’s safe to say Angelina Jolie is as well known for the details of her personal life as she is for her work as a Hollywood actress. Occasionally, however, those two aspects collide, like when her onscreen characters sport some of her real-life tattoos. And Jolie’s penchant for ink has been well-documented, both in the tabloids that follow her closely and in her big-screen appearances. But observant fans recently spotted some new work when Vanity Fair ran a cover story on the A-List star. MTV News caught up with the star this week in Washington, D.C., where Jolie was promoting “Salt,” and we had to ask about the tattoo. But the actress was tight-lipped about what the ink, on her inner thigh, actually said. “Um, it’s for Brad,” Jolie demurred with a smile. She was more open, she said, when it comes to her personal life. “I actually think it’s important to be completely honest, however difficult that may be,” Jolie told us about what makes a relationship successful. “I’m bad at hiding secrets anyway,” she added. While we won’t speculate on the content of her latest tattoo (that’s what the zoom feature on Photoshop is for), the balance of Jolie’s tattoos more or less chronicle her romantic history, and offer some insight into her philosophies about love and life. On her shoulder, for instance, is a Buddhist Pali incantation that offers such wisdom as “if you acquire riches, may they remain yours always,” and on her hip is a Latin inscription: “quod me nutrit me destruit,” which translates to “what nourishes me, destroys me.” Jolie also revealed that her partner, Pitt, had yet to see the action flick, which opens July 23. “He hasn’t seen the movie,” she said. “Maybe he’ll question me after he sees it,” she joked of playing a string of wives-with-secrets. Jolie admitted she couldn’t be sure how her choice in roles might affect their offscreen relationship. But she was sure Pitt would enjoy “Salt.” “Oh, of course,” Jolie said. “He was there for the shooting and he would come to set and he’d seen some of the stunt sequences and stuff. He thinks it looks cool and all of that, but he hasn’t seen the whole thing. He’ll see it at the premiere.” Will you see “Salt”? Do you like Angelina best in action films? Tell us in the comments!
