‘In The Land Of Blood And Honey’: The Reviews Are In!

‘No one should be surprised that Angelina Jolie is as capable behind the camera as in front of it,’ one critic says of globetrotting Oscar winner. By Kara Warner Zana Marjanovic in “In the Land of Blood and Honey” Photo: GK Films For her directorial debut, “In the Land of Blood and Honey,” Angelina Jolie chose to helm a harrowing, unrelenting drama set against the backdrop of the Bosnian War that highlights the horrors of the ethnic conflict that ravaged the region in the 1990s. To say that it is not a feel-good film is an understatement. The critics are almost completely divided on whether Jolie’s effort, which scored a Golden Globe nomination for Best Foreign Film, is a success. Read on as we sift through the reviews of “In the Land of Blood and Honey.” The Story “Eight years ago Jolie starred in a film, ‘Beyond Borders,’ in which she sashayed around global hot spots in elegant outfits like a fashion model on a shoot. Almost as if in atonement, ‘Blood and Honey’ is nothing like that, quite the contrary, in fact, as it centers on the queasy relationship between a captor, a Serbian army officer responsible for rounding up Muslims or otherwise making them disappear in Bosnia, and a female prisoner, a woman he was interested in prior to the war and is now able to exploit, but also protect, as his ‘personal property.’ ” — Todd McCarthy, The Hollywood Reporter The Direction “Because Jolie is known for her very public passions, which have progressed from the relative simplicity of the carnal to a globally-oriented expression of the maternal, the relatively sedate tone of ‘In the Land of Blood and Honey’ is unexpected. The systematic use of rape as a weapon of war is depicted with discretion (the brutality was far more vivid in ‘The Whistleblower,’ another 2011 Bosnian war-themed release). Jolie might show a shrieking woman being carried away by a soldier in the background, but she keeps much of the horror offscreen, at a remove from Ajla. Meanwhile, her scenes with Danijel read as lovers taking pleasure in each other’s company, legs and limbs tangled languidly in the sheets. … No one should be surprised that Angelina Jolie is as capable behind the camera as in front of it; why wouldn’t she be? Here’s an Oscar winner who travels the world on behalf of the United Nations listening to horror stories from refugees; processing pain is a regular sideline for her.” — Mary Pols, Time The Performances “Jolie’s actors [Zana Marjanovic, Goran Kostic, Vanesa Glodjo], all from the former Yugoslavia and unknown in the West except for the superb veteran character actor Rade Serbedzija, give magnetic, raw performances. Their commitment helps us through a movie that is often harrowing, never less than intense but important, one unafraid of moments too many have chosen to forget.” — Joe Neumaier, New York Daily News The Final Word “Considering the historical, ethical and technical challenges in the mix — a first-time director recreating a war of ethnic cleansing on a bombs-and-bullets level, with charged issues or power and abuse, along with the challenge of shooting in a second language in a foreign land — it is not patronizing to suggest that Ms. Jolie’s first film is an ambitious step forward that promises more, and better, in the future. The film may have more in ambition than it does in execution, but it deserves to be taken seriously as a debut by someone who may yet be as natural and assured behind the camera as she seems to be in front of it.” — James Rocchi, MSN.com Check out everything we’ve got on “In the Land of Blood and Honey.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Angelina Jolie Hopes ‘Blood And Honey’ ‘Isn’t Just A History Lesson’

‘It isn’t just a political film, it isn’t just Bosnia,’ director of ‘In the Land of Blood and Honey’ tells MTV News. By Kara Warner Angelina Jolie on the set of “In the Land of Blood and Honey” Photo: Ken Regan / GK Films Although Angelina Jolie’s directorial debut, “In the Land of Blood and Honey,” is a harrowing, unrelenting drama set around the atrocities experienced and committed during the Bosnian War, Jolie swears that her goal in making the film and telling this story is not to teach anything or promote any agenda. “I hope for the audience watching that it isn’t just a history lesson, it isn’t just a political film, it isn’t just Bosnia,” she told MTV News recently. “We tried to tell a dramatic story, we tried to make a good film with great actors, we tried to just give traditional dramatic storytelling, and somehow in that, we also layered all these other things and it’s a part of it. “Even if you’re not particularly interested in history, which I can’t imagine because it’s important, but if [you want to see something] just for filmmaking or just to see performances or just to see a story, an emotional relationship story, that’s this film.” Nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film Golden Globe, it highlights the horrors of ethnic conflicts that have occurred far too often throughout history — in this case, the Bosnian War. The story revolves around the relationship between two Bosnians on opposite sides of the conflict, Danijel (Goran Kostic) and Ajla (Zana Marjanovic) , and the devastating toll it has on their lives. Jolie raved about the experience she had during production, calling her crew “a family,” which made us wonder if the first-time director is ready to go back and direct another film. “Oh, I don’t know,” she said. “I’m still very shy [about that]. I still can’t believe I’m even here and we did it.” Check out everything we’ve got on “In the Land of Blood and Honey.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

In The Land of Blood & Honey Trailer – Angelina Jolie’s Directorial Debut

Brad Pitt Thought Angelina Jolie’s First Screenplay Was ‘Not That Bad’

One of the more mysterious curios of the fall movie season is Angelina Jolie’s directorial debut In the Land of Blood and Honey . In an interview with Vanity Fair (on newsstands in New York and Los Angeles this week), Jolie says that she wrote the script for the Bosnian War-set romance while she was ill and quarantined from her children. “I don’t watch TV and I wasn’t reading anything. So I started writing. I went from the beginning to the end. I didn’t know any other way.” Afterward, she passed the draft to Brad Pitt; what did her super-famous husband think? “He called and said, ‘You know, honey, it’s not that bad.'” Oh. Maybe leave that one off the poster. [ VF. com ]

During our rapid-fire questions, MTV News also asks about Lady Gaga, ‘American Idol’ and retirement. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Angelina Jolie Photo: MTV News It’s time to play “Address That Rumor” with Angelina Jolie! Interviews with the Oscar winner don’t come along every day, and when you actually have the opportunity to chat with her, you’ve got to maximize your time. Thus, when MTV News sat down with Jolie in Paris while she was promoting “The Tourist,” we took the opportunity to throw out some rapid-fire questions about upcoming projects, persistent rumors and pop-culture preferences. OK, Angie, let’s get down to business! Rumor has it that your husband, Brad Pitt, is going to have a cameo in your directorial debut, a drama set during the Bosnian war. True or false? Jolie: “Possibly.” Cryptic! Moving on: There’s another Jolie/Pitt rumor floating around the Web, this one that you guys will reunite onscreen for “The Tiger,” possibly directed by “Black Swan” helmer Darren Aronofsky. Yes or no? Jolie: “I don’t really know much about that, but I love Darren Aronofsky.” Fair enough. Christopher Nolan is hard at work on his third “Batman” film, “The Dark Knight Rises,” and the Internet has decided you’d be perfect to play Catwoman. Whatcha think? Jolie: “I haven’t heard anything about it, but I thought they did it.” Well, yes — once with Michelle Pfeiffer in Tim Burton’s “Batman Returns” and again with Halle Berry in 2004’s “Catwoman” — but never in Nolan’s version of the franchise. Jolie: “I see. Thank you. Flattering.” Enough with rumors, Miss Jolie. Let’s talk about leisure-time activities: Do you prefer “American Idol” or “The X Factor”? Jolie: “I’m not really familiar with both. I would assume ‘X Factor’? But I’m not sure what I’m saying!” Oh, awkward. We promise we’re almost done! Lady Gaga or Kanye West? Jolie: “Ask my kids!” Lame! And finally, when it comes down to it, will you ever retire or will you act to the bitter end? Jolie: “Retirement. Certainly not act to the bitter end. I’d like to think I’d do other things.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Tourist.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Evelyn Lozada on Chad Ochocinco Engagement: YAY!

Evelyn Lozada may star on Basketball Wives – returning to VH1 with new episodes on December 12!!! – but this reality star has never actually been wife. She can’t wait for that to change, however, as she gushed to People this week over her engagement to NFL wide receiver Chad Ochocinco. “He gets who I am, supports my dreams and loves me unconditionally,” she told the magazine . “I just knew he was the one from me.” While a source claims “Evelyn has been dying to have kids and is looking forward to starting a family with Ocho,” the impending football wife didn’t touch on that subject here. Instead, she simply said: “I couldn’t be happier with my engagement to Chad. Our friendship is true love and respect and is unlike anything that I have ever experienced.”

Angelina Jolie Hits Back at Sarajevo Haters

Angelina Jolie paused from plugging her new film with Johnny Depp (watch The Tourist trailer ) to hit back at critics of her upcoming directorial debut. The Oscar winner lashed out at the Bosnian haters who have called her ignorant and sought to block her from shooting her film in the country. “There’s one person who has a gripe. The majority of the population, the cast, the president, have been extremely supportive,” Jolie said in Paris. A number of people were upset after hearing the still-untitled film’s plot dealt with a Bosnian Muslim woman who falls in love with her Serbian soldier rapist. The storyline from the film set during the 1990s war turned out to be a rumor, and a false one at that, but their protests were enough to spark controversy. The outcry even prompted officials to cancel the star’s film permit, citing insufficient paperwork, only to reissue in days later. But has she already moved on? As a result, producers of Jolie’s untitled drama kept shooting in Sarajevo to a minimum, instead opting to shoot a key scene in Budapest, Hungary. Jolie defends the film, noting that 95 percent of those in the cast had lived through the war. She said she wanted to tell this story due to her anguish over the fact that the international community was so reticent to try and stop the war. “I wanted to learn more about it and the people, the more I read and learned I was drawn to that part of the world,” Jolie said. “I met artists from that part of the world and found they were extraordinary for what they’d gone through. “I wanted to give them a platform.” The Mighty Heart star and U.N. goodwill ambassador previous said she would meet with some the Bosnian critics, but

Angelina Jolie Hates Thanksgiving and America

http://www.debbieschlussel.com/29711/bitch-angelina-jolie-thanksgiving-is-story-… Angelina Jolie hates Thanksgiving, which she says is a “story of murder” she refuses to celebrate. Yup, she hates America. Jolie hates Jews and Israel (and attended an Islamic hate-fest), she attacked America for (barely) enforcing immigration laws and compared us to Hitler for it, and she interfered with Immigration and Customs Enforcement deportation of illegal alien children, insisting they have lawyers to game the system and stay here ad absurdum. And don’t forget that time when she said she’s “absolutely ashamed” of America. Plus, she loves her some terrorist-host-state Syria. Now, there’s this from AOL News/PopEater reporter Rob Shuter: While everyone is preparing to give thanks tomorrow, one of America’s most famous families, the Jolie-Pitts, have decided to sit this Thanksgiving out. “Angelina Jolie hates this holiday and wants no part in rewriting history like so many other Americans,” a friend of the actress tells me. “To celebrate what the white settlers did to the native Indians, the domination of one culture over another, just isn’t her style. She definitely doesn’t want to teach her multi-cultural family how to celebrate a story of murder.” Angelina has been filming her directorial debut, about a Serbian man and Bosnian [Muslim] woman who fall in love during the Bosnian War. Angie, always extremely sensitive to the suffering throughout the world, is filming in English and the native languages. “Angelina gets so grossed out by Thanksgiving that she has made sure her family will not be in America this year on Thursday,” an insider tells me. And although Brad Pitt recently told ‘EXTRA,’ “We’ll whip up a turkey somewhere,” he certainly hasn’t shared that plan with Angelina. A family friend tells me, “If Brad wants turkey, he will have to cook it himself. For Angie, it will be another day when America tries to rewrite history.” She has compared Americans to Nazis for trying to enforce immigration law and have secure borders. And she praised Palestinian children for singing about killing Jews to “get our revenge.” This is pretty consistent with that. And it’s irrelevant that Brad Jolie-Pitt said they’ll “whip up a turkey”? As we all know, he’s the chick in this relationship and really doesn’t have a thing to say about it. Jolie refuses to celebrate Thanksgiving, feels it’s a “story of murder.” Yet, oddly, she and Mr. Pitt have not relinquished their homes on Native American soil back to the Indians and given all of their money to the victims. They’re just not cooking a turkey. Ya know who the real turkeys are? Americans who continue to make this couple of America-hating hypocrites rich by going to their movies and buying into their BS. added by: crystalman
