President of Ford Canada Says "We Need Higher Fuel Prices"

The Globe and Mail notes that a Detroit Electric car cost $ 2,600 and had a range of 100 miles, while a Model T cost $ 650 and had a range of 180 miles; even 95 years ago, electric vehicles were a tough sell. Here is a surprise, coming from David Mondragon, the President of Ford Canada: It’s hard to believe that I’m going to say this, but we need higher fuel prices. He says the higher prices are needed to entice consumers to buy smaller cars like the Fiesta and encourage the market for electric cars. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Gulf Oil Spill Threatens Extinction of World’s Smallest Seahorse

Photo via wikipedia The Gulf oil disaster has done still unknowable damage to marine wildlife, with everything from fish to seabirds under threat. But at least one species is threatened with extinction — the dwarf seahorse , a tiny animal less than two inches long which is unique to the Gulf Coast. It lives among the seagrass beds in shallow water most of the year, but huge chunks of these beds have been killed by the toxins from the spill.

Lady Gaga’s Vogue Hommes Japan Meat Suit Offends PETA

‘Flesh from a tortured animal is flesh from a tortured animal,’ organization says of Japanese magazine cover. By Gil Kaufman Lady Gaga on the October 2010 cover of Vogue Hommes Japan Photo: Terry Richardson/ Conde Nast Right about now, one can only imagine how ripe that meat suit Lady Gaga donned for a cover shoot by Terry Richardson for Vogue Hommes Japan is getting. But PETA thought it stunk from the very beginning. The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals slammed Gaga for her latest sartorial head turner, in which she modeled a skimpy bikini made out of steaks, with another rib eye propped on her blond tresses for good measure. “No matter how beautifully it is presented, flesh from a tortured animal is flesh from a tortured animal,” PETA president Ingrid Newkirk said in a statement. “Meat represents bloody violence and suffering, so if that’s the look they were going for, they achieved it.” Newkirk told the New York Daily News that “Lady Gaga’s job is to do outlandish things, and this certainly qualifies as outlandish because meat is something you want to avoid putting on or in your body.” The criticism is a bit of a turn-about in the Gaga/PETA relationship . The organization praised Gaga — who is nominated for a record 13 MTV VMAs — in December for setting a faux polar bear coat on fire in her “Bad Romance” video and again in January for adding vegan hot dogs to her tour rider. And they loved when Gaga showed up in Kermit the Frog outfit to a German television interview last year, explaining that it was her commentary on not wearing fur. The Vogue issue is the same one in which Gaga poses as her male alter ego , Jo Calderone, a brown-haired mechanic from Sicily, for an alternate cover. In the accompanying interview, Calderone claims to be Gaga’s good buddy and occasional friend-with-benefits. “I met her at a shoot [photographer] Nick Knight was doing,” Calderone told the mag. “She’s f—in’ beautiful, and funny, and interesting. I was a little nervous for Nick to start shooting. She said, ‘Don’t be, baby, you were born this way.’ I took her out after. The rest is private.” What do you think of Lady Gaga’s meat bikini? Extinct Fox Turns Up Again in California

Photo via Keith Slausen / US Forest Service The Sierra Nevada red fox was thought to be extinct, until three weeks ago anyway. U.S. Forest Service biologists captured photos of the fox with a camera set up on a trail, and took DNA samples of saliva pulled from a bait bag the fox bit into to experts at the University of California, Davis. And yep, we can put one extinct species back on the books, at least for now. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

‘Dancing Shrimp’ Off The Menu At Sacramento Sushi Restaurant

photo via flickr Ever eaten live shrimp? Me neither, and I don’t want to. But while some consider the dish a delicacy, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals consider it cruel.
