MTV News was there exclusively, and we’ve got the footage for you right now! Backstage, in the moments prior to their commencement — which was held at nearby Western Michigan University, due to the overflow crowd — Kalamazoo Central Principal Von Washington Jr. brought the nearly 300 graduating seniors together in an adjoining holding area for what they only assumed to be little more than a quick pre-commencement pep talk. After some initial comments from U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, Washington announced that he had another special guest he’d like to introduce. The seniors in the room were shocked to see none other than President Obama himself bound out into the center of the floor. The room erupted in excitement and stayed charged throughout Obama’s brief-but-encouraging words on the hard work Central’s students had put in and the school’s embrace of diversity. Then he flashed his megawatt smile and began shaking hands with the still-stunned students, working the room with an enthusiasm reminiscent of his days back on the campaign trail. For the soon-to-be-graduates, the unexpected moment capped a week of excitement, one that kicked off with the announcement that Central had won the White House’s inaugural Race to the Top Commencement Challenge video competition (co-sponsored by education organization Get Schooled) aimed at finding the school that best exemplified academic excellence and college readiness. It was, needless to say, a day they won’t soon forget. “He took the time to shake everyone’s hand and looked everyone directly in the eye,” one student shared. God Bless.” A short time later, he added, “My heart goes out to any woman who has to deal with public scrutiny and speculation pertaining to their private life REAL TALK!” The non-answer from Cannon, 29, came amid swirling speculation about whether Carey is pregnant, sparked by the announcement last week that Carey would no longer be starring in Tyler Perry’s latest opus, “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf.” “She is not doing the movie because her doctor advised her not to,” her rep told UsMagazine.com last week. “More than that, I cannot comment further.” On Wednesday, a “source close to” the couple reportedly told RadarOnline.com that the couple are expecting. “They’re both very excited and very happy,” the source said. “Mariah and Nick want to keep the pregnancy quiet as long as they can.” Reps for Carey, 40, and Cannon had not responded to MTV News’ request for comment at press time. Recently, Cannon hedged that the pair’s Jack Russell dog, Cha Cha, is pregnant, but many wondered if he was just toying with the media over the speculation.

‘I want to go to the streets and find him anywhere he might be,’ Antoine Fuqua says of casting Shakur film. By Jayson Rodriguez Tupac Photo: Chi Modu Following the success of the Biggie Small’s biopic “Notorious,” and the announcement late last year that a Run-DMC flick is in the works, director Antoine Fuqua recently revealed his next project would be a feature about the life of Tupac Shakur . “It looks like we’re doing Tupac Shakur’s movie next in September, that’s what I’ve been starting up and working on now,” Fuqua told the British entertainment website Digital Spy on Friday. “I’ve been working on that for a while with Morgan Creek and [the production company’s CEO] Jim Robinson. I just got the green light from him and we’re going in September. I’ve just started to prep that.” Fuqua (“Training Day,” “Brooklyn’s Finest”) told Digital Spy that he would like to see a fresh face in the role of the iconic rapper, who was gunned down in 1996. For “Notorious,” producers set out on a nationwide search for an upstart actor to play the Notorious B.I.G., before deciding on local Brooklyn rapper Jamal “Gravy” Woolard. Anthony Mackie, who had earlier played Tupac in an off-Broadway play, tied on the signature bandana again to play the West Coast rapper in “Notorious.” But Fuqua seems intent on finding multiple newcomers to play various parts in the yet-untitled project. “That’s the goal, I want to discover someone new,” Fuqua said. “I want to discover a lot of new people if I can. Obviously I’m going to have to put some people in it that you know, just because actors have different skills. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it. No one’s life is moving faster than that of 12-year-old YouTube sensation Greyson Chance , who has gone from an unknown middle-schooler to a worldwide sensation in just a few weeks thanks to his masterful viral cover of Lady Gaga’s “Paparazzi.” On Wednesday (May 26), “American Idol” judge and talk-show queen Ellen DeGeneres revealed that she’s launching a new record label, eleveneleven, and her first signing will be Chance. According to an announcement from her spokesperson, the musical prodigy from Edmond, Oklahoma will join Ellen on Wednesday’s “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” where just a few weeks ago he got props from Gaga herself for his emotional solo piano cover of her hit single. Like his 20 million other fans, DeGeneres spotted Chance on YouTube performing the song at a sixth grade music festival (back when it only had 10,000 views) and then invited him to reprise the performance on her May 13 show, when he got a special call from Gaga. “Greyson … inspired me to start a record label called eleveneleven. He is my first artist and we are making a record together,” said DeGeneres in the announcement. Chance will perform one of his original songs, “Broken Hearts,” on Wednesday’s show. The preteen has already secured one of the most high-profile management teams in the music business in Guy Oseary, Madonna’s manager, and Troy Carter, Gaga’s handler, who have agreed to co-manage the sixth grader. DeGeneres, an avowed music (and dance) fan who started her first year on the “Idol” panel amid questions about her musical expertise, said she will continue to use her daytime talker as a platform to discover new artists for the label. The move comes at a pivotal time, as Wednesday night’s “Idol” finale marks the final appearance by original panelist and lead judge Simon Cowell, whose long tenure as a music executive and label runner will leave the judges’ table lacking someone with that experience. On Wednesday’s show, both Chance and DeGeneres will talk about how quickly the record deal and signing have come about. “I’m so excited to have you back,” the host said in the pretaped interview, according to a transcript released as part of the announcement. “This is moving so fast. When I first met you, I said things are going to change. Now [the hits] are over 30 million views. How are you feeling about it all?” Chance responds, “It’s crazy thinking about 30 million people. By Rick Marshall “X-Men: First Class” Photo: Marvel “Kick-Ass” director Matthew Vaughn will soon trade superhero wannabes for the real deal when he gets behind the camera for “X-Men: First Class.” The 20th Century Fox film about the early years of Marvel’s popular mutants received a director and release date this week, according to Variety. The report confirmed earlier rumors regarding Vaughn’s attachment to the project and set the release date for the film as June 3, 2011. Production is expected to begin this summer, with “X-Men” and “X2: X-Men United” director Bryan Singer producing “First Class” alongside Lauren Shuler Donner and Simon Kinberg. “I’ve been a fan of Matthew’s since ‘Layer Cake,’ ” Singer said in a statement regarding the announcement. “He has a deft hand with multiple characters and storylines, and a great love of the X-Men universe. I feel the combination of this story and his vision will make for an exciting and original X-Men film.” “X-Men: First Class” is expected to focus on younger versions of Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr (played by Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen, respectively, in the original franchise), before Xavier established his school for mutants and Lensherr adopted the name Magneto. The plot will explore the events that led up to the rift between the two characters. Leave it to Killers singer Brandon Flowers to find a way to pay homage to his sucker’s-paradise hometown in the announcement of his debut solo album. After a week of Web teases, Flowers announced that he’d be stepping out on the band with a disc called Flamingo, which the band’s official Web site says is “coming soon.” The announcement, in the form of a broken-down neon sign that has the singer’s name and a playing-card club lit up in red, is accompanied by a spare electronic track made up of pinging synth notes and some wordless falsetto vocals. The singer has also set up a parallel site that contains the same synth loop and glowing sign and that will presumably be a source of information about the disc. The Killers teased the news of the Flowers album on Twitter earlier this week, telling their followers to check their official site for “big updates.” While on tour in Australia earlier this year, the band canceled a number of dates following the death of Flowers’ mother and said they would be taking an indefinite break from touring. A spokesperson for the group could not be reached for further details about the album’s release. It appears Flowers isn’t the only Killer taking a break, as drummer Ronnie Vannucci has signed up to perform in a supergroup called Mt.
