Brown Rice Instead of White Rice May Lower Diabetes Risk

By Denise Mann, Health.com June 14, 2010 4:20 p.m. EDT Researchers note that brown rice intake was associated with “a more health-conscious lifestyle” and diet. (Health.com) — The next time you order Chinese food or need a side dish to serve with dinner, you're better off choosing brown rice instead of white. Eating more brown rice and cutting back on white rice may reduce your risk of diabetes, a new study reports. “People at risk of diabetes should pay attention to carbohydrates in their diet and replace refined carbohydrates with whole grains,” says the lead author of the study, Dr. Qi Sun, M.D., a nutrition researcher at the Harvard School of Public Health, in Boston, Massachusetts. If you eat a little more than two servings of white rice (about 12 ounces) per week, switching to brown rice will lower your risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 16 percent, Sun and his colleagues estimate. And if you replace those servings of white rice with whole grains in general, they estimate, your diabetes risk will decline even further, by 36 percent. White rice is produced by removing the husk-like outer layers of brown rice. Those discarded layers contain nutrients (such as magnesium and insoluble fiber) that have been shown to guard against diabetes, which may in part explain the study's findings, Sun says. White rice may also contribute to diabetes risk because it causes blood-sugar levels to rise more rapidly than brown rice does. (This is known as having a higher glycemic index.) Type 2 diabetes occurs when your body loses its sensitivity to insulin, a hormone that helps convert blood sugar (glucose) into energy. The result is that blood sugar, which is toxic at high levels, can creep into the danger zone. Eating lots of foods with a high glycemic index– such as refined carbohydrates– has been linked to diabetes risk in the past. “White rice is digested much faster and converted into sugar in your blood much quicker, so your body puts out a lot more insulin in response to white rice,” says Alissa Rumsey, R.D., a nutritionist at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, in New York City. “Whole grains like brown rice are broken down into glucose a lot slower.” In the study, which is published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, Sun and his colleagues analyzed survey data from nearly 200,000 nurses and health professionals who participated in three long-running studies. Roughly 5 percent of the participants were diagnosed with type 2 diabetes during the studies, which lasted from 14 to 22 years. People who ate five servings or more of white rice per week had a 17 increased risk of developing diabetes compared to those who ate little or no white rice, the researchers found. On the other hand, people who ate at least two servings of brown rice had an 11 lower risk of diabetes compared with those who ate barely any brown rice. Although the researchers controlled for a number of diet and lifestyle factors (such as red meat intake, smoking, and physical activity), it's possible that the findings partly reflect the type of people who tend to prefer white versus brown rice. For instance, the researchers note that brown rice intake was associated with “a more health-conscious lifestyle” and diet. People who ate the most brown rice tended to be more physically active, were slimmer, and ate more whole grains, while they were less likely to smoke or have a family history of diabetes. Indeed, though brown rice is more nutritious than white rice, the study doesn't necessarily prove that white rice will contribute to diabetes, says Dr. Loren Wissner Greene, M.D., a clinical associate professor of medicine at New York University's Langone Medical Center, in New York City. “More brown rice is helpful because it is higher in fiber and that may protect against diabetes, but white rice may not increase the risk,” Greene says. At least half of your daily grain intake should be whole grains, Rumsey says. “Look for brown foods such as whole-wheat bread, whole-wheat wraps, or whole-grain or blended pastas,” she suggests. “There are a lot of whole grains– such as barley, bulgur, oatmeal, and quinoa– that are easy to cook with.” Check ingredients and nutrition labels when food shopping, Rumsey says. The first ingredient should say “whole grain” or “whole wheat,” and the foods should have at least 3 grams of fiber per serving. “Whole grains have so much more fiber, vitamins, minerals, and protein, so you get a lot more nutritional bang for your buck than with refined carbohydrates like white rice or white bread,” she says. http://www.ogiimpex.com/images/content_pic/brown_rice.jpg added by: EthicalVegan

American Idol Shocker: Goodbye, Siobhan Magnus

We ranked her second after Tuesday night’s performance show , but American Idol viewers had a different idea about Siobhan Magnus: They actually voted out this eccentric singer yesterday, cutting season nine down to five finalists. While it’s true Magnus could rely too much on hitting glory notes, and certainly talked back too much to the judges, at least she brought something unique to the Idol table. With the exception of Crystal Bowersox , can that really be said about anyone remaining? Equally as surprising as Siobhan’s elimination? She was joined in the bottom three by Casey James and Michael Lynche. We’d love for someone to tell us how Aaron Kelly avoided that fate. At least Shakira performed last night. She and her hips always make us happy. She was joined on stage bu Rascal Flatts, and Sons of Sylvia also played for viewers. Check them all out below, and bid farewell to Magnus now…

Suge Knight Lawsuit Against Kanye West Gets Court Date

Former Death Row honcho’s suit for 2005 Miami club shooting goes to court December 6. By Gil Kaufman Kanye West Photo: Eric Ryan/Getty Images Kanye West has kept a pretty low profile since infamously bum-rushing Taylor Swift at the VMAs , but the notoriously private rapper may have to come out of seclusion at year’s end, thanks to one-time rap impresario Marion “Suge” Knight . According to The Associated Press, , on Tuesday U.S. District Court Judge Patricia Seitz scheduled a December 6 trial date in Miami for a lawsuit by the one-time Death Row Records honcho against West. Knight claims the Grammy-winning rapper was partially responsible for a 2005 nightclub shooting at a party he hosted that resulted in Knight getting shot in the leg. Knight filed the suit against West in 2008, blaming ‘Ye for the loss of a beloved 15-carat diamond stud earring that he claims was stolen from him during the melee at the trendy Shore Club in 2005, where West was hosting a pre-party before that year’s MTV Video Music Awards. Knight was shot in the right leg at party in the still-unsolved crime, in which six shots were fired and few witnesses have come forward, despite a star-studded crowd that included Eddie Murphy, Jessica Alba and the Black Eyed Peas. According to the lawsuit, the label boss blames ‘Ye for allowing someone to smuggle a gun past security at the party, which his lawyers said was also supposed to be attended by people known to have beef with Knight. A bullet hit Knight in the right leg, shattering a bone and requiring surgery and months of physical therapy that cost more than $200,000; the suit seeks more than $1 million in damages. A spokesperson for West could not be reached for comment at press time, but in court papers the MC and the owners of the Shore Club have denied Knight’s claims of negligence. The lawsuit was originally brought in Los Angeles as part of Knight’s 2006 bankruptcy filing, but later moved to Miami at the request of the Shore Club’s owners. If Knight wins, he’ll have to share any damages with the bankruptcy trustee and the IRS. Related Artists Kanye West Marion “Suge” Knight

Malcolm McLaren, Sex Pistols Manager, Dead At 64

McLaren had been suffering from cancer ‘for some time,’ his spokesperson said. By James Montgomery Malcolm McLaren in 1984 Photo: Lisa Haun/Michael Ochs Archives/Getty Images Malcolm McLaren, the manager of infamous punk act the Sex Pistols and the man for which the term “music impresario” was probably coined, died Thursday (April 8) in New York. He was 64. McLaren was born in London in 1946 and left home as a teenager, attending several art colleges (all of which he was expelled from) and taking up with the so-called “Situationist” movement, which favored absurd public demonstrations as a way of enacting social change. In 1971, he and designer (and partner) Vivienne Westwood opened a London clothing shop called Let It Rock, which would become the go-to outfitter for acts in the burgeoning punk scene on both sides of the Atlantic, starting with the New York Dolls, whom McLaren met in 1972. In 1975, he had begun to manage a London act called the Strand, who become the Sex Pistols after McLaren and his assistant spotted a snarling punk named John Lydon and made him audition for the group. Lydon was rechristened “Johnny Rotten,” and with him fronting the group, the Pistols began an assault on London’s art-school scene. With McLaren at the helm, the Pistols’ legend began to grow, reaching its pinnacle in 1977, when, during the Queen of England’s Silver Jubilee, they released their incendiary second single “God Save the Queen.” The song was regarded by many in the British public as an assault on both Queen Elizabeth II (mostly because it equated her to the head of a “fascist regime”) and the monarchy itself, because, as Rotten sneered, England had “no future.” In May of ’77, McLaren organized a boat trip down the Thames River, where the Pistols would perform the song outside the Houses of Parliament. The boat was raided by police, and McLaren was arrested, though he did succeed in his main goal: achieving massive amounts of publicity for both himself and his fledgling group. Riding that wave, the Pistols released their (only) album, Never Mind the Bullocks, Here’s The Sex Pistols, in October 1977 and geared up for an American tour in January 1978. They would implode after only 12 days in the States, splitting after a disastrous San Francisco gig. McLaren was accused by bandmembers (mostly Lydon) of not only mismanaging them, but refusing to pay them. The two would battle it out in court during the 1980s, with Lydon winning the rights to the entire Pistols catalog in 1987. The two men never spoke to each other again. McLaren also released albums of his own, most notably 1983’s Duck Rock, which saw him incorporate influences like pan-African rhythms, early hip-hop and even country. One of the singles from the album, “Buffalo Gals,” showcased scratching and a square-dance cadence, and the opening lines were even referenced by Eminem in his 2002 single “Without Me.” He continued to release albums well into the 2000s and branched out into painting, radio presenting and even the movie business, serving as a producer on the film adaptation of “Fast Food Nation.” McLaren’s spokesperson told London’s The Daily Mail that he had been suffering from cancer for “some time … but recently had been full of health, which then rapidly deteriorated” and that his body would be brought back to London for burial in Highgate Cemetary.

NBC’s Revisionist History of Conan O’Brien’s Tonight Show: It Never Existed!

How badly does NBC just want to put this Whole Conan Thing behind them? Via Peter Kafka at All Things Digital , so badly, they’re trying to eradicate all history of it ever having existed from The Internet. What history? Exactly . But come on, Peter Kafka. NBC wouldn’t be so stupid and brazen as to remove the archives of their first serious cause célèbre to come to the network in a while, would they? If you said “yes” outloud just now, well, you’re right. Per Peter : A little odd, given that a couple of days ago, the network was offering every single “Tonight Show” episode O’Brien had taped on NBC.com. But then again, everything about this story has been odd. I’ve asked NBC for comment. NBC – at least, I’m assuming it’s NBC – has also been aggressive about taking down Conan episodes from Google’s YouTube (GOOG). A look at NBC’s site shows, well, nothing. The NBC-partnered Hulu shows nothing, either! Nothing here, either That said, you can still watch other great NBC programming, like… Lipstick Jungle ! Which was canceled last May. Or Kings ! Which, like Conan’s show, was a fan-favorite NBC canceled because they were too incompetent to figure out how to make money off of it. Or the NBC reboot of Knight Rider, which was just as stupid of an idea as it sounded! You can even buy old Tonight Show gear! But you know what you can’t do? Watch Conan O’Brien ‘s The Tonight Show. Probably because it reminds NBC of nothing but their tremendous failure to do anything correctly, ever. A pattern they manage to move forward with by erasing Conan from their memories. Thankfully, for you, dear customer: Conan Lives On, in our hearts, minds, and at Gawker.TV , where we’re apparently servicing NBC’s customer base better than that network will ever—ever—be able to be.
