The Lone Ranger First Look: Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures has given us our first look at Johnny Depp in his latest eccentric role. The Oscar-winning star teams up with Armie Hammer for The Lone Ranger , starring in that May 2013 blockbuster as Tonto, the Native American BFF of the film’s title character. The Lone Ranger is a big screen adaption of the classic 1940s TV and radio series. It will produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and directed by Gore Verbinski. Said the former to Entertainment Weekly awhile back: “When the idea came up [for the movie], I started thinking about Tonto and what could be done in my own small way try to reinvent the relationship to attempt to take some of the ugliness thrown on the Native Americans – not only in The Lone Ranger, but the way Indians were treated throughout history of cinema – and turn it on its head.” Are you excited for The Lone Ranger remake?

Oscar Index: And the Winners Are…*

*: As determined by Movieline’s Institute For the Advanced Study of Kudos Forensics after crunching 23 weeks of data from the awards cognoscenti and beyond. Thank you for reading; our work here is done. The Final 9: 1. The Artist 2. The Help 3. The Descendants 4. Moneyball 5. Hugo 6. The Tree of Life 7. Midnight in Paris 8. The Daldry 9. War Horse What’s to say? The die was cast long ago, and unless all those old-ass , inactive white dudes who apparently make the Academy magic happen suddenly decide they want to recognize The Help (or come around on Moneyball a la some latecoming pundits or at least one old-ass, distaff counterpart ), then you might as well just plan to go out on Sunday night to take advantage of the quiet restaurants and/or grocery stores. (And maybe follow our livetweeting here if/when the urge strikes.) The Final 5: 1. Michel Hazanavicius, The Artist 2. Alexander Payne, The Descendants 3. Martin Scorsese, Hugo 4. Terrence Malick, The Tree of Life 5. Woody Allen, Midnight in Paris Did we ever settle on how many of these guys are actually going to show up to lose to Hazanavicius in person? The Final 5: 1. Viola Davis, The Help 1. Meryl Streep, The Iron Lady 3. Michelle Williams, My Week With Marilyn 4. Rooney Mara, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo 5. Glenn Close, Albert Nobbs Sasha Stone wrote a few days ago about the “general consensus” solidifying around some shakier frontrunners; Davis seems the most locked-in of that class. Anything could still happen this weekend, which is fine by me as long as it happens fast and we can get on with our lives. The Final 5: 1. Jean Dujardin, The Artist 2. George Clooney, The Descendants 3. Brad Pitt, Moneyball 4. Demi

Lindsay Lohan In Talks to Play Elizabeth Taylor; Who Should Be Dick to Her Liz?

We can all agree that Lindsay Lohan is in dire need of a comeback, and this might just do it — well, it’ll certainly help: Deadline reports that the 25-year-old starlet is in talks to play screen icon Elizabeth Taylor in Lifetime’s biographical romance Elizabeth & Richard: A Love Story . The pic will chronicle the legendary relationship between Taylor and Richard Burton ; no word yet on who’ll play Dick to Lohan’s Liz, which means it’s a perfect time to play a round of Fantasy Casting! I’ll start by throwing a few names out there: – Ed Westwick, who’s vaguely got a young Burton thing going on in his face, but is probably too young to play Burton, who was 7 years Taylor’s senior… – Armie Hammer, because why not? – Sebastian Stan, the underrated sidekick to Chris Evans’ Captain America and, coincidentally, another Gossip Girl alum… mostly because I’m intrigued by the thought of him setting off sparks onscreen with Lohan. Then again, I’d also vote to wait for Martin Scorsese’s take on Dick ‘n’ Liz , based on Sam Kashner and Nancy Schoenberger’s Furious Love … Have any better suggestions? The Evil Dead Remake’s New Ash Is… Snow White

Sam Raimi ‘s Evil Dead reboot , which begins filming in New Zealand this spring, has found a new star to fill the shoes of original Ash Bruce Campbell , so to speak: 22-year-old British-born actress Lily Collins , who’ll next be seen playing Snow White to Julia Roberts’ evil queen in Tarsem’s fairytale adaptation Mirror Mirror . Let that sink in, Evil Deadites… deep breaths… now hit the jump for more details. According to Bloody Disgusting, Collins — last glimpsed, rather unfortunately, looking lovely on the lam with Taylor Lautner in Abduction — will lead a cast of five pretty young things who hole up in a cabin in the woods with a Book of the Dead. BD reports that Collins’ character Mia is a rebooted version of Ash; after a recent struggle with drugs, she and her pals head to the woods so she can detox but, of course, demonic possessions muck up the retreat. On board to direct is Fede Alvarez, discovered by Raimi’s Ghost House Pictures after his Uruguayan sci-fi short Panic Attack earned him notice, with a screenplay co-written by Rodo Sayagues and Diablo Cody . So while Raimi and Campbell are onboard as producers, this Evil Dead will be created by voices new to the franchise, clearly aimed at a new generation of fans. In which case, are you ready for a new lady Ash — one who’s as fair than them all? The Evil Dead reboot is set to hit theaters on April 12, 2013. • We’ve Discovered Who Plays The Lead In ‘The Evil Dead’ Remake — Meet The New Ash! [Bloody Disgusting]

Oscar Index: Draggin’ Tattoo? Don’t Bet on It

The first Oscar Index entry of 2012 finds Movieline’s Institute for the Advanced Study of Kudos Forensics a little hungover from the holidays and lot bored from the protracted inertia of awards season. Not even this week’s Producers Guild Award nominations could do much to shake up a contest that appears to be both wide open and solidifying into place at the same time. Let’s investigate… The Leading 10: 1. The Artist 2. War Horse 3. The Help 4. The Descendants 5. Hugo 6. Midnight in Paris 7. Moneyball 8. The Tree of Life 9. Bridesmaids 10. The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo Outsiders: The Ides of March ; Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close ; Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy ; Drive The awards cognoscenti weighed in where they could after Tuesday’s PGA nomination announcement, but on the whole it came down to a few routine observations:

‘Boil Japan’: Watch Yoda Shill for Instant Noodles in Japanese Commercial

“Believe in your own power, you must.” Words of wisdom from Star Wars guru Yoda have finally found their true purpose: Instructing a nation of instant noodle-eaters to activate their inborn power… to boil water! Seriously. You thought Vader’s ” Nooooo! ” was blasphemous? Where’s your god now, nerds?

Bad News, Julia Roberts: Mirror, Mirror’s Online Praise Might Be Studio-Generated

Last week, you and I watched the first trailer for Tarsem Singh’s Mirror, Mirror in slack-jawed horror. (After all, aren’t Snow White adaptations supposed to be about the titular princess and not Julia Roberts’s aging concerns, Bollywood dance numbers and Armie Hammer’s impression of a dog?) Surprisingly though, not all of the Internet’s feedback was negative. A few brave souls commented on the Relativity trailer enthusiastically — and now MovieMavericks.com is claiming that some of those suspicious thumbs-up reviews came from the same source.

Oscar Index: Hurricane Meryl Makes Landfall; Artist, Hugo Surge Toward Top

The bleary-eyed minions at Movieline’s Institute for the Advanced Study of Kudos Forensics have shoved off for the long holiday weekend, leaving it to me to sort out the hectic awards scramble as we head into the third month of this year’s Oscar Index. And by “hectic,” I do mean hectic , with a lead change at the top of two categories, a neck-and-neck tie atop another and plenty of feverish competition foreseen in another. Read on for a closer look.
