Clint Eastwood’s Brawl Lessons, and Other Revelations from the J. Edgar Press Conference

At the press conference for J. Edgar , which premiered last night at AFI Fest to mixed, often hilarious reviews , stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Armie Hammer and Naomi Watts joined director Clint Eastwood, screenwriter Dustin Lance Black and producer Brian Grazer fielded questions about the very issues that make the biopic seem difficult to make: the ambiguity surrounding both Hoover and his confidants’ personal lives. Movieline culled the best five quotes from the panel, one of which involves 81-year-old Eastwood’s on-set brawling.

How Julia Roberts Saved Fireflies in the Garden… and the Latest in the Snow White Wars

Julia Roberts shot newbie director Dennis Lee’s ensemble family drama Fireflies in the Garden four years ago, but after an infamously disastrous Berlin Film Festival showing and distributor drama at Senator Films, the indie film languished for years on the shelf. Last night at their premiere in Los Angeles Lee told Movieline how Roberts saved the film from direct-to-video hell and Roberts explained why her upcoming project, Snow White , will be worth the price of admission.

Why Disney Will Never Spend $250 Million on The Lone Ranger

As you may have heard , Disney shockingly put the brakes on the planned big-screen adaptation of The Lone Ranger that star Johnny Depp, producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Gore Verbinski were aiming to bring into theaters next Christmas. The reasons were budgetary — the cost of Ranger had reportedly ballooned to $250 million — but it appears that a mere (“mere”) $20-30 million is all that separates the studio from the filmmakers. Provided some cuts can be made — a task easier said than done, as backend deals and three large-scale action scenes revolving around trains reportedly threaten the compromise — The Lone Ranger could conceivably hit theaters at some point. Unless, of course, Disney realizes it might not be the best idea anyway.

Whoa There, Silver: Disney Pulls Plug on Johnny Depp’s The Lone Ranger

Big, bad news, Lone Ranger fans: According to Deadline, Disney has decided to halt production on Gore Verbinski’s The Lone Ranger , which was to star Johnny Depp as Tonto and Armie Hammer as the titular masked crusader. The pricey blockbuster was to begin filming this October, but too many other $200M+ projects set up at the studio may have led to the project’s demise.

4 Re-Imagined Fairytale Movies That We Never Want to See

With this morning’s news that Disney is courting Never Let Me Go director Mark Romanek to helm a Cinderella remake, it has become even more apparent that Hollywood is not going to keep its hands off of our Disney princesses. (Already, we have at least two Snow White reboots underway, one sensual Little Mermaid project in development, and a Hailee Steinfeld Sleeping Beauty redo.) In fear of which princess project will be announced next, Movieline has outlined four worst-case-scenario Disney adaptations that might make, say, the inevitable live-action Pocahontas action reboot seem less horrific in comparison.

Clint Eastwood Says He’ll Keep J. Edgar’s Sexual Orientation ‘Open to Interpretation’

Oh, great. Just when we thought Armie Hammer’s kiss with Leonardo DiCaprio in Clint Eastwood’s upcoming J. Edgar Hoover biopic was going to be explosive, Eastwood himself is confirming that he’s leaving the first FBI director’s sexual orientation “open to interpretation.” I know a certain TV personality who might have damning evidence to the contrary.

Armie Hammer Compares His Leonardo DiCaprio Kiss to — What Else? — Firearms

One biopic I actually care about is J. Edgar . That’s an intriguing, murky story. Just ask Tim Gunn, who definitely saw the FBI director dressed up as Vivian Vance one time. As for the film, you’ve got your Clint Eastwood direction, your Dustin Lance Black script, your Leo DiCaprio starring role, and now you have Armie Hammer, who is waxing poetic about sharing a kiss with DiCaprio in the movie. (He plays closeted homosexual Hoover’s friend Clyde Tolson.) What was the kiss like? Guns, y’see!
