Justin Bieber Has ‘Been Around The Block,’ Chelsea Handler Says

VMA host says singer plays his ‘flirty card’ with her. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Tim Kash Chelsea Handler Photo: MTV News The quick-witted Chelsea Handler is rehearsing for her VMA hosting gig as we speak. The talk-show host caught up with MTV News on Thursday (September 9) to reveal that she’s pretty much ready for anything. “I’m pretty good at answering anything you ask me,” she said. “I mean, if I know the answer. If I didn’t, I’ll just bullsh–. Bleep that please,” she laughed. “I forgot I was on a younger person’s network.” Speaking of young people, America’s favorite teen, the VMA-nominated Justin Bieber , is set to take the stage at the show, and he has quite the past with the comedian. But she admitted that, while he’s a “two face” in the love department , she does think he knows quite a lot about it. “He knows so much about romance,” she said. “If you listen to the lyrics of ‘Baby, Baby, Baby,’ or is it just called ‘Baby’? I have to say it three times, ’cause my heart thumps. He’s obviously been around the block. I mean, I don’t know why he’s pretending he’s not a sexual deviant, because he is.” Handler said she has her guard up these days around the pop sensation after she asked him out on a date only to have him start hanging out with VMA presenter Kim Kardashian instead. “He’s using the flirty card with everybody he meets, and I’m not gonna fall for that,” she said. “I’m 35 years old. I only have about five good years left in me, and I’m not going to waste my time on that guy.” The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. The party starts with MTV News’ VMA Pre-Show at 8 p.m., followed by the main event at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for Best New Artist from now through Sunday. Justin Bieber, Nicki Minaj And More VMA Virgins

Sunday is a big night for these first-time nominees and performers. By Kelley L. Carter Justin Bieber Photo: Robyn Beck/ Getty Images Be gentle with these guys — it’s their first time as nominees or performers at the MTV Video Music Awards . Here’s a look at this year’s VMA virgins and where you’ll see them come Sunday at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Ke$ha It was almost impossible to turn the radio on and not hear Kesha’s party-happy pop track “Tik Tok” over the past year. (She also did the background vocals on Flo Rida’s ubiquitous “Right Round.”) The singer is up for Best New Artist, and she’ll present an award Sunday. “This is such a monumental thing for me to be nominated, because it really means people do really like what I’m doing,” she said. Florence And The Machine Promise Flowers, Explosions For VMAs

Florence Welch she’ll try to re-create the ‘chaos’ of her ‘Dog Days Are Over’ video this Sunday. By James Montgomery Florence and the Machine’s Florence Welch and MTV News’ James Montgomery Photo: MTV News On Sunday night’s MTV Video Music Awards , multiple nominees Florence and the Machine will take the stage for their biggest U.S. performance to date. It’s a huge opportunity for the U.K.-based critical darlings, who are only just starting their push here in the states. So just what can VMA viewers expect? Well, from what we can gather, there will definitely be machinery of some sort. And perhaps explosions too. Oh, and maybe even some floral arranging? Machine mastermind Florence Welch wasn’t about to reveal all the band’s secret plans for Sunday night, but she did let MTV News in on a few bits of information. “The machine for the actual show is something kind of different — the machine is never supposed to be the band. … It’s kind of everything and nothing; I can’t explain it,” she smiled. “But for the performance it’s going to be something quite … I don’t want to give too much away, but it’s going to be big.” Welch also confirmed that the Machine will be performing their much-nominated “Dog Days Are Over” (which is up for four awards, including Best Rock Video and Video of the Year), and that their VMA setup will match the kinetic feel of the clip. Within reason, of course. “What we’re trying to do is kind of encapsulate the video into a live performance,” Welch said. “There’s a lot of different characters in the video, and so I’m going to be trying to bring some of that. It’s just about the energy of the song, for me. It’s sort of energy and chaos. There’s people, like, actually physically exploding in the video, and hopefully that won’t happen. If everyone’s really into it, that’s fine with me, but we haven’t planned it.” Sounds like things may get messy on Sunday night. But explosions aren’t the only thing Welch is promising during the show. In a nod to her live sets (where she covers her mic stand in bouquets), she’s also going to adorn the VMA stage in flowers. We think. “Basically, the whole thing is just me arranging flowers, and then a load of people around me spontaneous combust, and that it’s it,” Welch laughed. “It’s going to be great.” The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. The party starts with MTV News’ VMA Pre-Show at 8 p.m., followed by the main event at 9 p.m. ET. Drake Is Living Life Right Now: A VMA Cheat Sheet

The Toronto MC exceeded the hype, working his relentless grind from mixtape acclaim to chart-topping fame in an unforgettable year. By Shaheem Reid Drake Photo: George Pimentel/ WireImage Wack rappers, your worst fears have been realized: Drake is on top and he’s not letting up. This time last year, the VMA-nominated Canadian juggernaut known as Drizzy was topping the charts and basking in the glow generated by a string of highly touted guest appearances and his certified-instant-classic mixtape So Far Gone. As ’09 drew to a close, love for Drake from fans only intensified. The 23-year-old repped for his family on the We Are Young Money album, while verses on Timbaland’s “Say Something,” and his own “Forever” — let’s not even get started again about the power-packed lineup on that record

Eminem To Open Video Music Awards

Eight-time nominee will kick off the big night Sunday at 9 p.m. ET/PT. By Mawuse Ziegbe Eminem Photo: Michael Caulfield/ WireImage VMA vet Eminem will not only return to the stage Sunday, his performance will open the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards . Fresh from a pair of historic Home and Home Tour stops in his native Detroit with Jay-Z , Em, who has delivered a slew of unforgettable VMA moments in the past, will set the tone for the show’s 27th go-round. “We thought that there’s no better way to kick off the show than a performance from Eminem,” MTV general manager Stephen Friedman recently told The Associated Press. Sunday will be a busy night for Shady, who is up for eight Moonmen . His chart-dominating release Recovery has already racked up more than 2 million album scans and yielded hits like “Not Afraid,” which is up for Best Male Video and Video of the Year. Although public details about his performance remain scant, Em has always been good for iconic VMA moments. In 2000, he led a mass of Shady look-alikes into Radio City Music Hall as he spit his celebrity-skewering chart-topper “The Real Slim Shady,” which went on to win Video of the Year. Offstage, Em was the center of three awkward and, at times, potty-mouthed, moments in 2002 featuring foes Christina Aguilera, Triumph the Insult Comic Dog and Moby . Last year, Em kept things censor-friendly when he appeared in a video short, tearing up after coaching “30 Rock” comic Tracy Morgan through a duet with ’80s poptress Cyndi Lauper . Other stars slated to hit the stage Sunday are Kanye West, Linkin Park, Mary J. Blige, Drake, Usher, Paramore, Justin Bieber, B.o.B and Florence and the Machine. What are your predictions for Eminem’s VMA performance? Let us know in the comments below! Drake, B.o.B Lead Celebs’ Picks For Best Hip-Hop Video VMA

Nicki Minaj, Gucci Mane, Lil Twist and more weigh in. By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by MTV News staff Drake performs at the OVO Festival on Sunday Photo: Stephen Fernandez/ Splash News The Best Hip-Hop Video category at Sunday’s MTV Video Music Awards will pit a blue-chip lineup of MCs against one another. The collaboration-heavy field includes B.o.B (featuring Hayley Williams) with “Airplanes,” Drake, Kanye West, Lil Wayne and Eminem with “Forever,” Eminem with “Not Afraid,” Jay-Z and Swizz Beatz with “On to the Next One,” and Kid Cudi (featuring MGMT and Ratatat) with “Pursuit of Happiness.” The category includes nods for two legends, Em and Hov, who boast acclaimed late-career albums, but the recent focus has been on two big-in-2010 newcomers: Drake and B.o.B. Atlanta upstart B.o.B, whose “Airplanes” duet was also in the running to be crowned MTV’s Summer Jam of 2010, has made a lot of noise with his melodic singles and chart-ruling LP, B.o.B Presents: The Adventures of Bobby Ray. But Drake has had fans rioting, screaming and weeping in anticipation of his debut, Thank Me Later, and even bloggers fell back when it came to posting leaked songs, out of respect for the Toronto MC . So who will take it? When MTV News hit up a slew of celebs, the stars seemed split over which lyricist should walk out of the VMAs with a shiny new Moonman for his mantle. “Definitely would like to see Drake take it, ’cause he’s a good friend of mine, and definitely B.o.B, because he’s hometown,” said fellow ATL spitter Gucci Mane. “I would like to say … B.o.B for the hometown and Drake on the strength [of his skills]. He’s a talent.” “They’re both really good, but B.o.B’s just more my style,” said Kendall Knight of Big Time Rush. “Drake’s the man; he represents Canada. But B.o.B’s really cool.” “My brother Drake, he has to win. It’s Young Money, he gotta win that one,” Drizzy’s Young Money cohort Lil Twist insisted. “Shout-out to B.o.B, but Drake gotta win that one.” Disney actress Keke Palmer said she’s been cool with Drake since their child-star days, but she’s also feelin’ newbie B.o.B. “I love Drake. Whenever I did something in Toronto, I used to go visit him on the set of ‘Degrassi.’ Then I love B.o.B because I met him and he’s so cool and we’re friends,” Palmer said. “I don’t know what to do, because I love both of them.” Rapid-fire Chi-Town lyricist Twista was all about the gritty knock of Hov’s contending video. “I like all [of those] songs, but that “On to the Next One” with Jay-Z and Swizz Beatz is crazy,” Twista smiled. “That’s my jam right there.” Sarah Hyland of the Emmy-winning hit “Modern Family” said, “I love Eminem. His new album [ Recovery ] is amazing.” Nicki Minaj may hook up a range of artists with a colorful feature, but she proves that, in the end, she stays loyal to her hip-hop family. “Do you even have to ask that? My baby Drake … he does this,” Minaj said. “Young Money.” Regardless of who takes it Sunday, Gucci pointed out that just being recognized is a dope distinction. “From Kid Cudi to everyone you named on that list, big ups and respect,” Gucci noted. “It’s an honor to be nominated.” Who do you think will win Best Hip-Hop Video at this year’s VMAs? ‘Glee’ Star Matthew Morrison Teams With JC Chasez For Solo Album

Actor gets help from former ‘NSYNC-er for ‘Dancing in the Rain.’ By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Jim Cantiello Matthew Morrison Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images It’s no Acafellas reunion, but “Glee” star Matthew Morrison says he hooked up with former boy bander JC Chasez for one of the tracks on his solo album, which he plans to release next year. “I wrote about half the album so far, but I’ve definitely co-wrote. I’ve definitely teamed up with some great producers, some great songwriters,” he teased MTV News at the “Glee” season two premiere party on Tuesday night in Los Angeles. “And yeah, I just did this great song last week with JC Chasez that was very, very cool. It turned out really well. He’s such a good songwriter.” While the details of the collaboration with the former ‘NSYNC member are scant, Morrison (who plays glee club coach Will Schuester on the show) did share the name of the track. “It’s called ‘Dancing in the Rain,’ not ‘Singing in the Rain,’ but ‘Dancing in the Rain.’ ” Morrison shared that he’s got some other collaborations on the album, but wouldn’t name names. “It’s very eclectic. I’m doing some great duets. I can’t release who they’re with yet, [but it’s] some people that you’ve probably heard of before, that you’ve definitely heard of before.” Fans of “Glee,” which returns to Fox on September 21, shouldn’t be surprised to learn what Morrison’s album will sound like. “It’s gonna be a little adult contemporary,” he said. “And there’s gonna be some pop songs that you can shake your money maker to in the club.” And while Morrison’s co-stars may be presenting an award at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards, he’s got even bigger plans following his album’s release. “I’m hoping to perform at the VMAs next year!” The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. Justin Bieber’s Unstoppable Year: A VMA Cheat Sheet

Best New Artist nominee will perform at Sunday’s VMAs. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber Photo: Robyn Beck/ AFP/ Getty Images Remember when Justin Bieber was just an up-and-coming pop singer who presented at the 2009 VMAs and gave one lucky fan a red-carpet shout-out ? Well, since then, he has become a one-man pop-music sensation by dominating the charts, the airwaves and teen girls’ hearts. Just two months after last year’s VMAs, Bieber dropped his debut album, My World, and never looked back. He followed up the release with his spring 2010 sophomore album, My World 2.0. In the process, the 16-year-old has worked with everyone from Ludacris and Sean Kingston to Jaden Smith and even Kanye West and Raekwon on a “Runaway Love” remix . And let’s not forget: He’s even had an offer to have Mark Wahlberg leave rap retirement to jump on a track with him someday. Bieber’s career has been pretty much controversy-free, though he did have fans, VMA host Chelsea Handler and Bill O’Reilly riled up over his friendship, and subsequent Elle photo spread, with reality starlet Kim Kardashian . There have also been a few fan stampedes. Last November, Bieber had to cancel a Long Island mall appearance after his fans got a little out of hand. That incident was followed by equally zealous fan moments in Paris , New Zealand and Australia . While he’s appeared on the small screen thanks to his own “Diary” special and a stint on “SNL,” he will kick it up a notch later this month on “CSI,” when he plays bad boy Jason McCann. On top of all of that, he met the president , topped Lady Gaga on YouTube , showed his funny side on April Fool’s Day when he took over Funny or Die , hung out with Drake at the Much Music Awards , got a tattoo and released a number of music videos, including his VMA-nominated “Baby,” “Somebody to Love,” “Never Say Never” and “Eenie Meenie.” Now, with a VMA nod for Best New Artist and a highly anticipated VMA performance , whether he wins or loses, he will come out on top, thanks to his upcoming music video for “U Smile,” his 2011 3-D flick and the release of his first book, “Justin Bieber: First Step 2 Forever,” in October. Bieber will find out if all the highs of the past 12 months can land him his first Moonman. The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. The party starts with MTV News’ VMA Pre-Show at 8 p.m., followed by the main event at 9 p.m. ET.
