Snoop Dogg Talks Being First ‘Rock Band’ Rapper

‘I’m the first hip-hop rock star,’ he tells MTV News of his eight-song pack for the video game. By Kyle Anderson, with reporting by Sway Calloway and Matt Elias Snoop Dogg Photo: MTV News Even though he has been in the hip-hop game for nearly 20 years, Snoop Dogg still manages to tear down barriers and break records this deep into his career. Now, he has set yet another precedent in hip-hop history, becoming the first rapper to provide downloadable content for “Rock Band,” the video game that allows you to jump onstage with your favorite performer. “I do it all, man,” Snoop told MTV News’ Sway at last month’s Rock the Bells Tour kickoff . “I got some downloadable content with classic songs from Doggystyle, songs like ‘Drop It Like It’s Hot.’ You’ll be able to play along to the Snoop Dogg groove in a dramatic fashion, so you can feel like you’re a member of the Snoopadelics.” In addition to “Drop It Like It’s Hot,” the eight-song pack contains the smash singles “Beautiful,” “Sensual Seduction” and “Who Am I (What’s My Name)?,” as well as deeper cuts like “Ridin’ in My Chevy,” “Snoop’s Upside Ya Head,” “Tha Shiznit” and “That’s Tha Homie.” The package will be available for $13.49 (or 1,080 Microsoft Points, if that’s your game) and will also be available for individual purchase. Snoop, who describes himself as “an OG gamer,” is a big fan of the “Rock Band” approach and is happy to be part of a new tradition. “It brings it back to life again for those who may not have heard it, or those who may not even have been around when it was out,” Snoop said of the classic tunes getting new life via “Rock Band.” “It keeps that classic material rolling. I like when they do it with Metallica and Guns N’ Roses and the Beatles back to life. They’re educating the youth on that great music that was here years ago.” As for being the first rapper to penetrate the “Rock Band” market, it’s old hat for a living legend like Snoop. “I’m the first hip-hop rock star,” he declared. “The others, they do what they do, but they don’t do what I do.” For more on “Rock Band,” check out the Multiplayer blog , updated daily. Eminem’s Road To Recovery And Beyond: A VMA Cheat Sheet

Take a look back at Marshall Mathers’ journey to the 2010 VMAs, airing this Sunday, September 12. By Gil Kaufman Eminem at the 2002 VMAs Photo: Theo Wargo/ Getty Images Eminem has been to this party before. With nine wins, he’s one of the most rewarded artists ever at MTV’s Video Music Awards (ahead of Michael Jackson, in fact.) So it kind of makes sense that after almost five years spent out of the spotlight dealing with a nearly fatal addiction to prescription medication and a year after an attempted relaunch of his career with the Relapse album, Em is headed into Sunday night’s show with the second-most nominations, the promise of yet another sure-to-thrill performance and a chance to reclaim his VMA throne. He may even slip into third or fourth place on the all-time list. Behind only Lady Gaga’s record 13 nods, Eminem banked eight bids , including Best Male Video and Video of the Year for the emotional “Not Afraid.” It’s fitting that Shady gets resurrected after a nearly fatal car crash in his VMA promo , since just a year ago, some of his fans were wondering if Eminem had lost the golden touch that has earned the Detroit MC more than 80 million in global sales and made him one of the biggest breakout music stars of his generation. Though Relapse notched the biggest Billboard debut at one point in 2009 with 608,000, some critics noted that it lacked some of the lyrical crispness of Em’s past work. Though he’s since said Relapse was recorded while he was still struggling to emerge from the fog of his addictions, Eminem showed he still had a sense of humor, taking it in stride at the 2009 MTV Movie Awards when gay Austrian fashion reporter Br

30 Seconds To Mars Win Their War: A VMA Cheat Sheet

Take a look back at Jared Leto and company’s road to the 2010 VMAs. By James Montgomery 30 Seconds To Mars Photo: MTV News The success of 30 Seconds to Mars’ This Is War album is as much a tribute to the band’s unyielding dedication as it is to their general insanity. After all, they were, for a long while, a band without a home — having been famously sued for $30 million by their label, Virgin Records — or a plan ( Jared Leto told MTV News that he intended to sell their still-unfinished album “door to door”) if the band couldn’t rectify things with Virgin). Of course, we all know how the story ends. After a long wait, War hit stores in December, spawned two hit singles and served as the launching pad for 30 Seconds to Mars’ ever-growing world tour. Perhaps as a tribute to their unwavering commitment, the band was honored with four nominations at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards , including nods for Best Rock Video and Video of the Year. (Nominations they promise to celebrate with a very unique arrival at the show on September 12 .) It was a pretty nice reward for all their struggles, and though everything is right in the 30 STM universe these days, that wasn’t always the case. So with the VMAs just around the corner, we decided to take a look back at the band’s long and bloody battle for their future. There’s a reason they decided to call their album This Is War, after all. In 2009, things were pretty bleak, but rather than be deterred by a mega lawsuit and an uncertain future, 30 Seconds to Mars never backed down . Instead, they pressed on with the album bringing in Kanye West , holding fan-only recording sessions , importing Tibetan monks . They made This Is War bigger and badder, despite the very real possibility that it might never see the light of day. It was either a labor of love or an exercise in lunacy. Maybe both. Eventually, things reached a breaking point. In the spring of 2009, 30STM’s lawsuit was settled, in an effort to “make peace, to move ahead and begin again.” And work began on finally bringing This Is War home. Of course, just because they’d made peace with their label, that didn’t mean they were going to change the way they’d operated throughout the creation of their album … quite the opposite, in fact. Emboldened, they set out to make things even bigger than before. In October 2009, with the release of War still some two months off, they began working on their epic “Kings and Queens” video , a massive, sprawling thing that saw the band — and an army of their Critical Mass cohorts — take over the streets of Los Angeles, riding en masse while the city slept. It was a project of such scale that Jared Leto (who directed under his “Bartholomew Cubbins” alter ego) almost didn’t finish the thing, and “Queens” was literally in the edit room until hours before it premiered. His hard work would be rewarded, as the song — and video — would both hit big, and, in February 30STM prepared to launch their Into the Wild world tour . In April, with the North American leg of the jaunt just around the corner, they shot another epic video, for the album’s title track. Featuring Leto and his mates in army fatigues and body armor, “War” looked like a suitable follow-up to “Kings and Queens.” Only, months passed, and to date, the video has yet to premiere . By this point, of course, the band was practically impervious to struggle, so rather than continue to wait for “War” to be completed, they decided to shoot yet another video, a downright spiritual live clip for “Closer to the Edge.” . They just set off across North America once again, and there are plans to release a pair of films — one documenting the making of the This Is War album, and a second about the Into the Wild tour — in the near future. And, yes, Leto says that someday, the “War” video will see the light of day. No matter what it takes to get it done. Conflict is nothing new for his band, after all. As their success seems to prove, they practically thrive on it. The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on September 12. The party starts with MTV News’ VMA Pre-Show at 8 p.m., followed by the main event at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for Best New Artist from now through September 12. ‘Harry Potter,’ ‘Tron,’ ‘True Grit’ Top Celebs’ Fall Movie Wish List

‘Look, I’m a ‘Tron’ guy,’ Jack Black confesses of the flick he’s most looking forward to. By Kara Warner Daniel Radcliffe in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1” Photo: Warner Bros. MTV News’ Fall Movie Preview Week has been chock-full of the juiciest exclusive goods any eager moviegoer could hope for. Chills (courtesy of Wes Craven’s “My Soul to Take” ), thrills (thanks to Chris Pine talking about Tony Scott’s “Unstoppable” ) and exclusive stills . There was also some interesting talk about the secrets of onscreen nudity and post-production nipple addition (thanks, “Machete” cast !). In celebration of the upcoming season of highly anticipated films, we’ve compiled a little list of the films the Hollywood set is most anxious to see. “I am a huge Harry Potter nerd,” Chloe Bridges (“Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam”) told us at the premiere of the Disney sequel. “To obnoxious levels, it’s kind of sad, you have no idea, but yeah, I’m very excited for it. Part 1 of ‘The Deathly Hallows’!” ” ‘Tron’ for sure,” director M. Night Shyamalan said of the film he’s most looking forward to. “Because I don’t know what it’s going to be, and that’s so exciting. I know it’s based on the original movie, but I’m starving for original stuff as an audience member,” he said. “Gulliver’s Travels” star Jack Black begged to differ on the “Tron” excitement, however. “Yeah, that one’s not gonna be any good,” he said. “I don’t wanna see that.” And moments later Black changed his tune. Literally. He busted out a few bars of the original “Tron” theme for us. “Look, I’m a ‘Tron’ guy,” Black confessed. “Yeah, I like ‘Tron.’ I played the ‘Tron’ video game when I was a kid. Yeah! I’m in, I’m a nerd.” Black went on to say that he is equally excited for Jeff Bridges’ other fall film, “True Grit.” “Jeff Bridges plus the Coen brothers equals genius,” he said. “If you saw ‘The Big Lebowski,’ you know what I’m sayin.” “Somewhere” director Sophia Coppola also expressed enthusiasm for “True Grit,” as well as Darren Aronofsky’s “Black Swan.” “I’m excited to see ‘Black Swan,’ and I know the Coen brothers have a movie coming out,” she said. “It’s always fun this time of year to go to the movies because there’s so much to see.” We couldn’t agree more! Kanye West’s 2008 VMA Set Was Born At Obama’s Nomination

Genesis of West’s memorable performance of ‘Love Lockdown’ is uncovered on ‘VMAs: Revealed’ this Saturday. By Mawuse Ziegbe Kanye West performs “Love Lockdown” at the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards Photo: Getty Images Kanye West’s most memorable VMA appearance to date is probably that whole Taylor Swift nonsense that went down at the 2009 show. But one thing for which the Louis Vuitton Don can always be counted on is a stunning live television moment — whether he’s been invited to the stage or not. His most triumphant appearance arguably took place at the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards , when the Chicago MC mounted an innovative rendition of his spankin’ new single “Love Lockdown.” Kanye ditched the hard-hitting rhymes for heartfelt vocals and closed the show with 20 Taiko drummers pounding out the song’s thunderous rhythms. It was a new direction for the star, who bravely risked wiping out his street cred and weathering worldwide fan backlash for his inventive, genre-melding sound. Like Madonna writhing onstage in a wedding dress, Lady Gaga hanging from the ceiling smeared in fake blood or Eminem leading an army of blond doppelgangers into Radio City Music Hall, Kanye West’s 2008 set had all the makings of a signature VMA moment: a tricked-out performance from a major superstar laced with the slightest hint of WTF. However, executing West’s appearance was a mad dash to the VMA finish line, with the show’s organizers and the artist careening toward super-firm deadlines in the race to pull off the performance. In the special “The VMAs: Revealed – Presented by New 5 React Gum,” premiering on MTV at 11 a.m. Saturday, the whirlwind creation of 2008’s “Love Lockdown” set is broken down by the people who made it happen. The idea for West to wrap up the VMAs with his 808s & Heartbreak single popped up at an unexpected venue: The 2008 Democratic National Convention. As Barack Obama accepted his party’s nomination to run for president, VMA executive producer Dave Sirulnick and West met up in Denver to discuss the MC’s latest work and MTV’s upcoming awards show. “It was phenomenal because it was this whole new thing that Kanye was doing,” Sirulnick says of hearing demos of Yeezy’s new music. “You could see how this could play perfectly as a close to the show.” However, once both parties agreed to have ‘Ye close out the VMAs, the real madness began. To find out how West went from a meeting in Colorado to belting out “Lockdown” at the 2008 VMAs, catch “The VMAs: Revealed – Presented by New 5 React Gum” on Saturday at 11 a.m. The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on September 12. She added that filming the VMA visual is a bit more involved than shooting the music videos to her hit collabos and solo smashes. “This thing today has been like shooting a movie,” Minaj observed. “It’s very specific. When I shoot videos it’s just about performing and doing whatever you want. But with this it’s more like, ‘No, this is the shot we need so we have to … get that shot.’ ” Ultimately, Minaj was down to be detail-oriented for the shoot and said that being involved in the VMAs is an honor for any up-and-comer. “This is something that everybody dreams of being a part of … and I am no exception to that rule,” Minaj said. “I just feel like, this is my coming-out party. Chelsea Handler Schools Staffers On Lady Gaga Pronunciation

‘It’s [Lady] Guh-GAW,’ Handler says behind the scenes of her VMA promo. By Mawuse Ziegbe Chelsea Handler Photo: Timothy White Chelsea Handler is hard at work preparing for her gig as host of the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards , a job that includes making sure that there are no slip-ups when it comes to shouting out oddly named pop stars. So, when the cameras went behind the scenes at the funnywoman’s VMA promo shoot, Handler was found reprimanding her staff about the proper ways to announce some of this year’s nominees . “I am excited to see Lady Guh-GAW,” Handler declared, while seated at the head of her staffers table. When someone on her team chimes in with “It’s Gaga,” the way that, well, the whole world pronounces it, the “Chelsea Lately” host jokingly corrected the supposed flub. “No, it’s Guh-GAW,” Handler deadpanned. “Everyone pronounces it wrong.” The comedienne pointed out that another blonde hitmaker, Ke$sha, has endured mass mispronunciation of her uniquely spelled moniker. “Just like Keh-dollar-sign-hah pronounced that way,” Handler said. “She doesn’t want you to say it the other way. I met her.” With the big night just a couple weeks away and the pressure on to deliver another live two-hour event packed with oh-no-they-didn’t moments, the cameras caught Handler and her team engaged in intense brainstorming sessions. And the crew brought in a master of mayhem to help ideate television magic: Kid Rock. “You can go down on Snooki in the hot tub that they have on the ‘Jersey Shore,’ ” Handler suggested to Rock. Lucky for the Handler, the Detroit rap-rocker seemed down for anything. “After a couple fifths of whiskey I’ll go either way. Hell, after a fifth of whiskey I’d have sex with you.” Handler, who has experienced her fair share of passes from popular lyricists , served up a demure reply to the open invitation for a drunken hookup. “Thank you,” Handler responded. Usher’s VMA-Nominated ‘OMG’ Inspired By ’80s Sci-Fi Character

Director Anthony Mandler wanted to let R&B superstar take viewers “on a journey, not a ride.” By Jayson Rodriguez Usher in “OMG” For a video as forward thinking as Usher’s “OMG” — with its laser beams and light flashes — director Anthony Mandler actually looked back for inspiration. “The original idea was kind of Max Headroom,” Mandler told MTV News, citing the animated science-fiction character from ’80s British TV. “That’s where it came from — the TV flickering on and there’s this character. We just wanted to bring it up to date.” “Max Headroom was always in his room,” he continued, “this unidentifiable room, ’80s shapes. I used that for inspiration.” The formula worked: “OMG” is among the Best Male Video nominees for the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards. The clip is up against Drake’s “Find Your Love,” Jason Derulo’s “In My Head,” Eminem’s “Not Afraid” and B.o.B.’s “Airplanes.” Mandler is a multiple nominee, having also helmed Drake’s video. “OMG” is the first time Usher and Mandler — who’s worked with Jay-Z, Mary J. Blige, and Rihanna — collaborated on a project. Usher said he knew the video would be a challenge and wanted to make sure the director was up to the task. “When I first shot the song to him, I was like, ‘Are you sure you’re gonna be able to catch this one?’ And he said, ‘I got it,'” Usher explained. “We wanted to bring into my world,” he continued. “Obviously, the international sound and look and feel has already been set, but we wanted to do something theatrical, fun and energetic to show us working off of each other and playing off of each other as artists, but the cinematography would be artistic and incredible.” Mandler described the visuals as “Hitchcock-ian.” Though the style of the shot was important to the director, he had a simpler goal in mind: to capture Usher in his element. He said the key to the clip was simply letting Usher’s talent take over. “The concept was to create a world where we put Usher in a space where he does what I think he does better than anyone else in the world, which is perform at a level and magnitude of a superstar and take us, the viewer, whether audible or visually, on a journey, not a ride,” the director said. “And, in that, I wanted to create an unpredictability, so one set leads to another and another, and you never know what’s gonna happen. Along the way, Usher becomes our guide. We’re so focused on him, we don’t notice the change. The thing is unfolding little by little, and you can’t quite see far enough ahead to know what’s gonna come next.” The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on September 12 at 9 p.m. ET. Justin Bieber Fans Say They’ll Cast VMA Votes ‘Every Single Day’

‘Nobody stands a chance against him,’ one die-hard Belieber says of Best New Artist nominee. By Rya Backer Justin Bieber Photo: Mark Von Holden/ Getty Images Justin Bieber has had a landmark year, earning among other accolades a friendship with Kim Kardashian , a #1 album, a sold-out tour and a multitude of hits. And now, in addition to performing at the 2010 Video Music Awards on September 12, he’s also been nominated for Best New Artist for “Baby.” MTV News hit Madison Square Garden before Bieber’s sell-out gig on Tuesday and asked Bieber’s fans about his chances of winning. The Beliebers, who are famous — and at times infamous — for their rabid devotion, not surprisingly, predicted very little competition for their hero from his fellow nominees, including chart-toppers Ke$sha and Nicki Minaj. Because the Best New Artist is decided by the public, Bieber’s fans said they’ll see to it that he takes home his Moonman. “Most of the fans that he has are really big fans, so if they vote for him, they’ll vote for him every single day,” Bailey Solomons explained. Solomons, along with two friends, did not have tickets for the MSG show, but dressed up in their best Bieber garb hoping to be invited in. Another fan, Alexa Summerlin, affirmed Bailey’s sentiment, saying, “Justin has a big fanbase and the people are gonna vote for him.” “Nobody stands a chance against him, if they did, I would be so shocked,” said Taylor Carro, a fan who plans on voting before the September 12 deadline. Other fans had a simpler argument for why Bieber stands to pick up the award. “He’s amazing and everyone loves him!” Diana Rossi gushed. “All the teenagers and kids love him,” Danicka Przchowski added.
