Sean Penn Questions Wyclef Jean Presidential Campaign

Earlier today, Wyclef Jean officially kicked off his campaign to be the next President of Haiti . But the singer already faces opposition from an Oscar winner and well-known activist in the region: Sean Penn. Asked by Larry King for his take on Jean’s political ambitions, Penn cited allegations that Wyclef mishandled $400,000 in earthquake-relief donations and said the artist has been absent from his native country. “This is somebody who’s going to receive an enormous amount of support from the United States, and I have to say I’m very suspicious of it,” said Penn, who runs a 55,000-person tent camp via his J/P Haitian Relief Organization, adding: “I’m not accusing Wyclef Jean of being an opportunist; I don’t know the man. One of the reasons I don’t know very much about Wyclef Jean is that I haven’t seen or heard anything of him in these last six months that I’ve been in Haiti.” Wyclef didn’t respond by claiming he’s been active in the nation itself, but instead says he’s perfect for the position because he understands “the psychology of the Haitian people.” “What I want Sean Penn to know is, if I was not in Haiti after [former president] Jean-Bertrand Aristide left, if I did not create [my charity] Y

Kanye West’s ‘Power’ Video Should Be ‘Provocative,’ Director Says

‘It kind of leaves you with the feeling that something’s about to happen,’ Marco Brambilla tells MTV News of 90-second clip. By Steven Roberts Kanye West Photo: MTV News Kanye West’s “Power” video , which premieres Thursday (August 5) at 11 p.m. on MTV, is a collaboration between the Louis Vuitton Don and artist Marco Brambilla . When MTV News caught up with the director Wednesday afternoon, he said he and West attempted to paint a portrait of power in the clip. “There’s a lyric in the song — ‘No one man should have this much power’ — so the video kind of answers its own question,” Brambilla said. “It poses the question: ‘What does power and access look like?’ And then: ‘How delicate is it to preserve that moment of time?’ ” Brambilla said they wanted to take a contemporary look at the idea of someone being immortal then becoming mortal, and show it in a way that would connect to art history. He used the Sistine Chapel as a reference point, including a Michelangelo fresco that comes to life. West is the central figure of the piece and represents “power.” Brambilla said West has gone through a tumultuous past year, as expressed in the lyrics of “Power,” and is in a moment of transition. For the video, Brambilla used the photo-montage style of his “Civilization” video installation, which is what caused West to seek out the artist in the first place. “I shot images of the casting, people who came in as dancers and models and actresses in the various poses, and then it was put together as a photograph originally,” Brambilla said. “We had very little time to shoot it. We only had a day to shoot, it so I basically know exactly how each element would look, where each element would go and how the whole piece would choreograph, because there’s about 24 layers of video in the piece, and they are all interconnected. So it’s almost like a visual ballet in a way, and it had to be pre-planned in a very specific way to make it cohesive and to make it work. That was the most challenging part of it: how to [translate] it from a still, a painting, and then make the painting come alive into the filming and the photography.” Amazingly enough, Brambilla was able to accomplish this in a minute and a half. The “Power” clip might only be 90 seconds, but Brambilla said that wasn’t the plan going in. “I made it very clear at the beginning that I wasn’t really interested if it was going to be a music video,” he said. “I wanted to do something which was more like a visual accompaniment to the track, and so it didn’t really need to be any specific length and it didn’t really need to be the whole song. It needed to kind of introduce the song in a different way and a fresh way, and I came with this continuous shot with no cuts, no lip sync, and the minute, minute and a half just … seemed like the perfect amount of time to show a video portrait. “It didn’t answer all the questions,” he added. “It just becomes more provocative and a little bit more tense at the end, because it cuts away just before the action within it resolves itself, so it kind of leaves you with the feeling that something’s about to happen.” Don’t forget to tune in to MTV tonight at 11 p.m. ET/PT for the premiere of Kanye’s “Power” video and check MTVNews.com for full coverage of the clip. Jerry Garcia Musical Biopic Loses Rights to Jerry Garcia Music

Deadheads might call this a bad trip: The planned biopic about Grateful Dead frontman Jerry Garcia has been Jackie Jormp-Jomp’d . Reps for Garcia’s estate announced it will not participate in the film, meaning filmmakers won’t have access to his music or his family. If director Amir Bar-Lev ( The Tillman Story ) needs any tips on how to navigate a musical biopic without the artist’s actual music, he should probably give Jack Donaghy a call. Allison Iraheta Gushes About ‘Don’t Waste The Pretty’ Co-Star Orianthi

‘We want to write together,’ she says of her tourmate on Adam Lambert’s Glam Nation jaunt. By Jim Cantiello Orianthi and Allison Iraheta Photo: Donald Kravitz/ Getty Images If you saw Allison Iraheta and Orianthi recently on “So You Think You Can Dance” and thought, “Dang, they have some killer chemistry,” you’re not alone. The two have been rocking together on an almost nightly basis, thanks to Adam Lambert’s Glam Nation Tour , on which they each perform opening sets and collaborate on Iraheta’s single “Don’t Waste the Pretty.” “When [Orianthi] comes out [onstage], I get all crazy,” Iraheta told MTV News when Glam Nation hit New York this summer. “I’m all, ‘Man, I gotta start getting all manly and stuff.’ ‘Cause when she plays — her face, man. She’s intense.” Allison tapped the Australian guitar wiz to give “Pretty” a dirtier rock edge versus the pop recording initially released on her debut album, Just Like You. “She brings something so different to the song. It’s so crazy,” Iraheta beamed. Allison and Orianthi (Alli-anthi?) have so much fun rocking out, the two plan to join forces more often. “We want to write together,” Iraheta said. “I even told her: ‘Let’s bring the Heart [sound] back!’ ” The redheaded rocker (who gained millions of fans when she debuted on the eighth season of “American Idol” with a Heart song, appropriately enough) even went so far as to say she’d consider creating a band with Orianthi down the road. OK, so a permanent Alli-anthi rock band probably won’t happen. Instead, fans should just keep “Don’t Waste the Pretty” on repeat and hope that their busy schedules allow for a killer music video. When we spoke with Allison in June, she hinted that she’d have time to film a proper video once her Glam Nation commitment ended. But that was before Iraheta’s stint on Lambert’s tour was extended through October, thanks to popular demand from fans. Would you like to see Allison and Orianthi join forces on the regular? Busta Rhymes: Nicki Minaj ‘Stands Alone’ Among ‘Hottest Breakthrough MCs Of 2010’ Finalists

‘She’s already doing everything that it takes to get to the next level,’ the animated MC says of the Young Money Barbie. By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by Shaheem Reid Busta Rhymes Photo: MTV News With a bunch of memorable features already under her belt, a BET Award for Best Female Hip-Hop Artist and a surprise #1 hit with “Your Love” , Nicki Minaj is reveling in her status as the queen of the hitmaking Young Money crew. Now, as a top-five finalist for “Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010,” Minaj is proving she’s truly unstoppable this year. For many of her fans, including fellow animated New York MC Busta Rhymes, there’s not much more Nicki can do to secure her position as one of the hottest rappers around. “I think she’s already doing everything that it takes to get to the next level. She’s standing alone — there is no two Nicki Minajs right now,” Busta told MTV News. Bussa Bus credits the Young Money Barbie’s success to “her diversity, as far as what she’s able to display style-wise.” Busta explained that a lot of rappers can become stagnant when it comes to their style, an occupational hazard he hasn’t seen Nicki fall victim to yet. “A lot of the times we get stuck into these characters where we kind of become slaves to those characters; we sound a particular kind of a way all of the time,” he explained. “I’m never saying that it’s not a good thing. We should always trademark certain things about us so that people can identify with it off the top. But it’s always good to be able to show people how diversified you are and what you’re capable of outside your comfort zone,” Busta said. “It feels like she ain’t got no problem displaying that.” And while many Nicki fans would agree that Minaj has the music game on lock, Busta said that the star should try to shut down Hollywood as well. “I probably think the one thing she need to do that she ain’t did yet was show up in a couple of these movies,” Busta said, adding, “and it’s a wrap. She get a couple of these movies and steal the scenes that she’s in the same way she do it on these records, she going to put the nail in the coffin with that.” MTV News will be rolling out the top-five candidates for “Hottest Breakthrough MCs of 2010” all week — with the winner being revealed on MTV2’s “Sucker Free Summit” on Sunday at noon!
