Pink’s Acrobatic Stage Show: An Inside Look

MTV got a special view of the artist’s dangerous stunts before she performed at the 2009 VMAs. By Eric Ditzian Pink performs at the 2009 VMAs Photo: Kevin Mazur/WireImage Anyone who has seen one of Pink’s acrobatic stage shows — in which she flies upside-down through the air while managing to sing beautifully — knows that the talented 30-year-old puts herself at risk nightly. MTV News got an inside-look at what it takes to put together such a perilous act when Pink performed at the Video Music Awards last September. And after a harness reportedly malfunctioned and Pink fell onto a steel barricade during a show in Germany on Thursday, we immediately thought back to what we learned from seeing her VMA rehearsals and talking with a show insider. “There’s a lot of danger,” VMA creative director Lee Lodge told us last year. “You may see it, and you may think it’s amazing, but what people don’t understand is how technically difficult it is to do that — and do it while singing live.” During last year’s Funhouse Tour and this year’s Funhouse Summer Carnival Tour, the singer has been executing high-flying move after high-flying move, everything from trapeze flips to whirling rope spins. It’s eye-popping stuff, and something only a professional would be able to pull off. “She’s trained as a gymnast,” Lodge explained. “She does so much aerial work in all of her concerts. Pink is an amazing performer who probably doesn’t get enough credit as she should — vocally and as a songwriter, but also in terms of what she can do onstage.” Her stage show is so impressive that it ended up setting the tone for the rest of the VMA performances, from Lady Gaga’s to Jay-Z’s. “Our executive producer, Jesse Ignjatovic, flew to London to see the concert, and as soon as he saw the concert, Pink was the very first act booked on the show,” Lodge said. “And because it was the first act booked for the show, it raised the bar for the rest of the performances, in terms of they all had to have a sense of spectacle or scale or theater or drama. The whole direction of the show was started a long time ago when Jesse saw Pink’s show.” When an artist is flying 60 to 80 feet above a stage, there is always a concern about safety, but Lodge emphasized that Pink’s crew was experienced and safety-conscious. “For us, you have to check the safety of the performance,” Lodge said. “It’s dangerous, but for Pink, the fact that she does it every night and has been doing it for a couple of months, made everyone feel safe.” Have you seen Pink perform her stunts live? Lil Wayne Talks Daily Routine, New Lyrics In Letter To Fans

‘Amazing would be too typical and perfect would be unfair,’ Weezy says of his new rhymes. By Mawuse Ziegbe Lil Wayne Photo: Alexander Tamargo/Getty Images Since Lil Wayne went to jail earlier this year, his fans have been curious about how the star is holding up. Artists who have kept in touch with Weezy — like Tyga , Nicki Minaj and Fat Joe — have given updates about the star’s bid, and roughly midway through his sentence, Wayne has written another letter to his fans, opening up about his time in Rikers. In the letter, posted Tuesday (July 13) on his website, WeezyThanxYou.com , Wayne said he’s “counting the days and still smiling” and gives up details about his daily routine. “I wake up around 11AM. Have some coffee. Call my kids, and my wonderful mother. I then shower up. Read fan mail. Have lunch. Back on the phone. Read a book or write some thoughts down. Have dinner. Phone. Pushups. Then I listen to ESPN on the radio. Read the bible, then sleep. That’s my day,” Weezy wrote. The routine reflects a level of normalcy that experts predicted the star would experience in jail. The superstar MC also opened up about the new lyrics he’s been penning in the pen, writing, “There’s no word that I can think of that properly defines them. Amazing would be too typical and perfect would be unfair.” In addition, Weezy said the outpouring of support he’s received while in lockup has prompted him to pay closer attention to his words. “I never imagined that I could have such an impact on people’s lives. Because of this, I vow to be a bit more careful of what I say,” Wayne wrote. Wayne also revealed that he’s keeping up with the pace of music, writing, “I listen to the radio sometimes, emphasis on sometimes, and I hear the new music. I like some.” He might not be into all the latest radio hits, but Weezy did show love to his Young Money artists. “I applaud my Young Money family for what they’re doing. As I’m not surprised. This is what we’re supposed to do. Congrats to Drake and Nicki for all their recent success. Those 2 are going to have me retiring early.” The megastar rapper closed the letter by sending detailed messages to dozens of individual fans. The star wrote to one fan (who’s presumably a fan of both Miley Cyrus and Weezy), “Me and Miley? Different, but cool. Enjoy Utah,” and to another, “Thanx for supporting me in the U.K.. Say hi to Lexie for me.” To those he wasn’t able to shout out by name, the artist ended the letter with a simple message: “I thank my fans for appreciating me the way you do.” Are you surprised by Wayne’s daily routine in prison? Prince Insists ‘The Internet’s Completely Over’

‘I don’t see why I should give my music to iTunes or anyone else,’ singer says of digital sales. By Mawuse Ziegbe Prince Photo: Jens Dige/Scanpix/AFP Photo Don’t expect pop legend Prince to join the army of celebs oversharing on Twitter or ranting on Facebook. The rock god has proclaimed the Internet a thing of the past, calling the World Wide Web “outdated.” “The Internet’s completely over,” Prince told the U.K.’s Daily Mirror . It appears the pop god wants fans to head to an old-fashion record store to pick up his upcoming album 20Ten, as the icon is not OK with selling his latest music through an e-retailer. “I don’t see why I should give my new music to iTunes or anyone else. They won’t pay me an advance for it and then they get angry when they can’t get it.” The Purple One didn’t stop his critique at e-commerce and chalked up his lack of interest in the Internet as a whole to the medium’s lack of coolness. “The Internet’s like MTV,” said Prince, comparing the Web to the media company. “At one time MTV was hip and suddenly it became outdated.” It’s probably safe to assume that Prince is neither a Mac nor a PC — the “Purple Rain” singer also lambasted the proliferation of technical devices and said, “All these computers and digital gadgets are no good.” The music luminary, who is releasing 20Ten for free in the U.K. with copies of the Mirror on Saturday (July 10), insisted that users would be better off without their digital devices. “They just fill your head with numbers and that can’t be good for you.” In addition to slamming all things digital, Prince also directed some criticism inward. The influential singer and instrumentalist revealed that since he feels he’s been advancing his craft over the years, he’s embarrassed by his earlier recordings. “Someone told me they saw me at my peak, but how do they know when my peak is? I think I’m improving all the time,” he said. “When I listen to my old records I’m ashamed of how I played then.” The perennially ageless singer also insisted that a lifetime of rocking out has preserved his youthful appearance. “Playing electric guitar your whole life does something to you. I’m convinced all that electricity racing through my body made me keep my hair,” he offered. While the pop icon may be over his earlier music, he is still regarded by many as a living legend. Prince was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2010 BET Awards , as stars like Patti LaBelle and Alicia Keys took to the stage to celebrate the artist’s massively successful and hugely influential career. Nicki Minaj Denies Lip-Synching At BET Awards

‘U could hear me in the auditorium but apparently not in TV land,’ she tweets. By Mawuse Ziegbe Nicki Minaj Photo: Frederick M. Brown/ Getty Images Nicki Minaj was one of the biggest winners at Sunday night’s BET Awards , taking home Best Female Hip-Hop Artist and Best New Artist and scoring a collective trophy with Young Money for Best Group. The saucy upstart has made a name for herself with her rollicking flow , but fans were buzzing about what didn’t come out of her mouth at the show, accusing the rap diva of lip-synching through her performances. Minaj took to Twitter on Monday (June 28) to dispel rumors that she didn’t bring all her skills to the stage. “U could hear me in the auditorium but apparently not in TV land,” she tweeted . The star also added that technical difficulties were at play. “Shout out to the sound guy.” However, the “Massive Attack” rapper assured fans that the sound issues will be cleared up when the network rebroadcasts the show. “They say it’ll b fixed wen it re-airs. :/” Overall, it was a busy night for Minaj. After winning Best Female Hip-Hop Artist (a trophy she scored solely on the strength of her mixtapes and work with Young Money, since the star has not yet dropped a major-label debut) and calling for “positive energy” among women in hip-hop, the MC popped up in two different performances. She emerged from a cloud of smoke in a skintight catsuit and spit her rapid-fire verse for the remix of “Hello, Good Morning” during Diddy-Dirty Money’s performance. She also helped close out the show, performing her collabo with Ludacris, “My Chick Bad,” with M

Diddy, Trey Songz Applaud Chris Brown’s Emotional BET Awards Performance

‘He left his heart on the stage,’ Songz says of singer’s Michael Jackson tribute; host Queen Latifah and others also react. By Hillary Crosley Chris Brown at the 2010 BET Awards Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ FilmMagic Folks had nothing but love for Chris Brown, who fell apart during his tribute to Michael Jackson at the 10th annual BET Awards on Sunday night. At the afterparty, hosted by the tag team of Diddy and “Hustle and Flow” actress Taraji P. Henson, everyone from a show producer to the cast of the soon-to-be-revived BET series “The Game,” as well as some of the night’s winners and presenters had something to say about Brown’s emotional performance of “Man in the Mirror,” during which the singer fell to his knees crying, genuinely unable, it seemed, to sing the song. “You know who stole my heart tonight?” Henson asked. “Chris Brown!” answered Diddy, host Queen Latifah, BET personality Tigger and a group of others in near-unison. “He was so vulnerable,” Henson continued. “I love you Chris!” During the tribute, Brown channeled Michael as he danced to “Remember the Time,” “Smooth Criminal” and “Billie Jean.” The winner in the Best Male R&B Artist category, Trey Songz , said, “Chris killed that. He left his heart on the stage. He gave genuine emotion. I was proud of him and I was happy for him for having that moment.” Songz didn’t mention Brown choking on the lyrics during the song: “He did that justice. Everybody’s been waiting for that.” Brown may have been waiting for his turn to do a tribute to his idol Michael Jackson, but it was clear from comments he made later in the show that he was disappointed by his inability to keep his emotions at bay onstage. “I let ya’ll down before, but I won’t do it again,” he said as he accepted the award for the AOL Fandemonium prize, which was presented by siblings Brandy and Ray J. “I promise.” Fans voted online, giving Brown the win over Nicki Minaj, Trey Songz and Justin Bieber. 2010 BET Awards Belong To Chris Brown, Alicia Keys And Prince

Performances from Eminem, Drake and Nicki Minaj also stand out. By Jayson Rodriguez Chris Brown Photo: Frederick M. Brown/ Getty Images Chris Brown, Alicia Keys and Eminem shined the brightest among the star-filled Shrine Auditorium on Sunday night (June 27), wowing the audience at the 2010 BET Awards in Los Angeles. Brown put out a sizzling tribute to Michael Jackson , just days after the one-year anniversary of the pop icon’s death, with a medley that included “Remember the Time” and “Billie Jean.” The embattled R&B star’s take on “Man in the Mirror” was measured and emotional, tugging at the hearts of many as Brown broke down during the song’s refrain. The singer was decked out in full MJ gear, from the bandaged fingers to the high-waisted pants. As he struggled to finish the lyrics to the song, the audience assisted him, completing the lyrics he could not as he dropped and rose from his knees. Alicia Keys was just as stirring , performing her own solo set and contributing to the tribute to Prince, who was honored with a lifetime-achievement award. Patti LaBelle and Janelle Monae also joined Keys to pay homage to the Purple One. Keys, replete with her newly public baby bump, sang “Adore” and shocked those in attendance when she crawled atop her piano to finish out the sexy number. Eminem also performed twice , taking the stage with B.o.B for the “Airplanes” remix and his own “Not Afraid.” Drake was among the night’s big winners, as he and Young Money cohort Nicki Minaj took home trophies for Best Hip-Hop Artist, male and female, respectively. Trey Songz Honors Prince At BET Awards With ‘Purple Rain’ Verse

Singer kicks off performance with latest single, ‘Yo Side of the Bed.’ By Hillary Crosley Photo: Frederick M. Brown/ Getty Images Trey Songz kicked off Prince’s Lifetime Achievement Award tribute at the BET Awards on Sunday (June 27) with his performance of “Yo Side of the Bed” that bled into “Purple Rain.” In a purple button-up, black slacks and vest, Trey sang his recent hit “Yo Side of the Bed” atop a stage bathed in purple lights. The track’s video, featuring Keri Hilson as a military officer and Trey as her mourning husband after she’s killed in the line of duty, played in the background on large screens. During the performance, Trey gave a shout-out to all who’ve lost a special someone. “This song goes out to anybody watching this tonight,” Trey said to an audience of swaying women. “I feel your pain.” The singer then launched into the first verse of Prince’s 1984 classic “Purple Rain” from the film of the same name. As Trey strained to hit falsetto notes almost on his knees, the camera cut to Prince himself seated in the audience looking on. “Prince, I don’t know where you are, but you inspire us all,” Trey said as a screen showed the message “Pray for our soldiers and their families” behind him. Earlier in the evening, the Virginia native won the award for Best Male R&B Artist and brought his date, his mother, April Tucker, onstage with him to accept his trophy. Tucker is extremely proud of her eldest son and described him as “a regular guy with a God-given voice and talent for writing.” Following the awards show, BET will debut Trey’s documentary “My Moment,” which follows the singer during Jay-Z’s recent Blueprint 3 Tour. Melanie Leray’s Full-Frontal in “Dans tes Bras” of the Day

I don’t know who this is. I just know she’s from France and French entertainment is far more interesting than American TV partially because I can’t understand what they are saying so I can’t get annoyed of their bullshit storylines, where as I can’t ignore the bullshit when it is all American and in English, but more importantly, French movies get their pussy naked…sometimes fucked with actual fucking in movies, and the whole thing seems so much more liberal, real and fun to watch cuz as I dude, I can say, that’s all we really want to see in movies. I never care about what is really going on in the movie…we just wanna see pussy lip….but unfortunately, the whole French nudity may be allowed because the pussy is so fucking hairy, bitch might as well be wearing underwear, but I guess after all the pubic hair waxing has gone mainstream, and bush has gone hipster, a little pussy hair is a nice change of pace when not on some rich trust fund girl in her artist loft trying to be a “fashionista” artist….and that’s all I have to say about that, cuz I just watched this clip and realized how shit it is….too late now.
