Diddy On Lil’ Kim/ Nicki Minaj Flap: ‘It Ain’t No Beef’

‘I love Lil’ Kim,’ the mogul tells the BBC, adding, ‘Nicki never did anything to her. ‘ By Mawuse Ziegbe Diddy Photo: Getty Images Lil’ Kim may not be feeling Diddy or Nicki Minaj , who Diddy is rumored to be managing, but the rapper and hip-hop exec says he’s still cool with the Queen Bee. Kim’s recent outbursts about the Young Money Barbie and the Bad Boy mogul have been grabbing headlines, but Diddy isn’t letting the star’s words get to him, saying he still has mad love for Kim. “I want to say I love Lil’ Kim, man,” Diddy told the BBC’s Tim Westwood on Friday (June 11). “I’m sorry that she’s mad. I never would have thought that by me working with another artist that she would take it the wrong way. But if she’s taking it the wrong way it ain’t meant like that. Nicki never did anything to her.” Kim has sounded off about Minaj in a variety of outlets, including a recent interview posted on ThisIs50.com . “For the last year, she’s been subliminally taking shots at me, subliminally taking shots at the other girls in the industry. I mean, come on, we read that interview where she said, ‘Oh, being that the other rap chicks in the game ain’t got sh– to do right now, when I’m by the pool, they can feed me grapes,’ I remember that sh–,” Kim told the website. “The last thing she did that was very subliminal, ‘Oh, did I kill the Queen?’ and Puffy is sitting right next to her vibing with that bullsh–. Come on, we ain’t stupid. It’s obvious that she likes my music and that she’s trying to mimic what I’m doing, she’s subliminally busting shots.” Kim also talked about her feelings to Philadelphia radio personality Kendra G . “All females that come in the game, we all need to stick together, and I always try my best to embrace them. But what happens is when you come into the game and realize that I’m not going away and my fans are still here and they can’t just step over me. They can’t just step on me and then they’re kinda like, they get upset and then they don’t want to be my friend anymore and I think that’s really childish, you know what I’m saying? It’s stupid because all I ask for is to be respected — pay homage at the end of the day.” While Diddy maintained his love and respect for Kim, he went on to defend Minaj, insisting that the Queens hitmaker has shown the Queen Bee nothing but respect. “She ain’t trying to swagger-jack or say nothing negative about her. I just think that Kim needs to just understand that Nicki as a whole has always been respectful of her and Nicki’s not trying to be her,” Diddy said. “I ain’t gonna make no apologies for working with Nicki Minaj. [She is] somebody that’s never said anything negative about Kim and just really has always, in my eyes, has paid homage to Kim. She’s a different MC. They don’t even talk about the same thing. If you’re like a connoisseur of MCs and you a specialist — like what Kim has talked about and what Nicki talks about — they don’t talk about the same things.” The mogul also suggested that Kim’s vocal attacks on the “Massive Attack” rapper are a ploy to build buzz as she prepares to drop a new project. “Kim is gonna be a MC and MCs when they coming back out a lot of times they like to talk crazy and do what they do, ” he said. “At the end of the day, everybody respects Lil’ Kim for being the Queen Bee.” Diddy may be cooking up some heat in the lab with Nicki Minaj, but despite their budding professional relationship, the hip-hop Bad Boy continues to maintain his support for both MCs. “We riding with Nicki and we still riding with Kim,” he said. “We love and respect the days and the history that we’ve had with Lil’ Kim. It ain’t no beef.” Related Artists Diddy Lil’ Kim Nicki Minaj

Green Day Want To ‘Keep Adding’ Earlier Songs To ‘Rock Band’

‘It would be great to see songs from 39/Smooth and Kerplunk,’ frontman Billie Joe Armstrong says of new game’s track list. By James Montgomery Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong Photo: MTV News When you’ve got a discography that stretches all the way back to 1989, cramming all of it into one video game is sort of tough. That was exactly the problem facing Green Day when they partnered with the publishers of the “Rock Band” franchise — there was just too much music. So while the just-released “Green Day: Rock Band” features 47 tracks spanning the band’s entire career, it opens to their breakout 1994 album, Dookie, which any astute GD fan can tell you was actually their third studio record. But some omissions might prove to be temporary, according to the guys in the band. “That’s what’s cool about the ‘Rock Band’ thing, is if we want to add more songs, we can do it online, in the future,” drummer Tre Cool explained. “If we want to do some surprises and stuff, we can always keep adding to it.” “Yeah, it would be great to see songs that are from, you know, [Green Day’s 1990 debut] 39/Smooth and [’92’s] Kerplunk, to come out on it,” frontman Billie Joe Armstrong added. “You know, that’s what’s exciting … to visit some of the older songs too.” But until those older songs are made available, Green Day fans are going to have to make due with the 47 tracks that did make the cut, a list that includes all of Dookie, American Idiot and most of 21st Century Breakdown, not to mention songs from their Insomniac, Nimrod and Warning albums too. And that’s part of the fun for the guys in Green Day: looking back on older tunes, and even rehearing them as “stems,” remixed for the game by Chris Lord-Alge. “It’s exciting for me to hear the song ‘She,’ and you know, that was fun to watch and play,” Armstrong smiled. “And hearing the stems that they had to do with Chris Lord-Alge, who ended up doing all the different mixes for it to bring out the drums and the guitars and bass and vocals. That was really exciting too, for people to see or, to play or to hear again.” MTV News is celebrating the release of “Green Day: Rock Band” with a week of special coverage. Lady Gaga’s ‘Alejandro’ Video Might Not Top ‘Telephone,’ But Why Should It?

Gaga may have reached a point in her career where not even she can top herself, in Bigger Than the Sound. By James Montgomery Lady Gaga in “Alejandro” Photo: Interscope Records Sometimes, being Lady Gaga must be a bummer. Take the Tuesday premiere of her much-anticipated “Alejandro” video : Though it features more odes to Brecht than a six penny opera and singlehandedly broke Twitter when it debuted, it’s being called a Madonna knockoff by some (check the comments on this Entertainment Weekly story ), “pretentious” by others (see the comments on this CNN.com piece ) and even a “disappointment” by some fans. While I don’t think those reactions are particularly warranted (or particularly fair), they prove what Gaga is up against these days. After a meteoric, improbable rise to the top of the pop universe, she may have finally reached the point in her career where not even she can top herself. It happens to all the greats — it’s just never happened this quickly. Case in point, people’s biggest qualm with “Alejandro” seems to be that it’s not “Telephone.” They complain that it’s long, redundant and self-indulgent — and all these things are funny to me, because they’re the same problems people had with “Telephone” when it was first released. Only now (in the span of just three short months), it’s viewed as her classic, the one against which all other Gaga clips shall be judged. Shoot, “Alejandro” doesn’t even have the product placement “Telephone” did (remember how much people raged about that ?), and yet folks are already rushing to bury it. Of course, the “Telephone” comparisons aren’t fair. After all, the videos have nothing in common aside from the fact that they were released consecutively. But they do carry some weight, because it’s entirely possible that that video represented Gaga at the absolute peak of her powers and abilities. After months of hype, it premiered live on E!. It stretched past the nine-minute mark. It was violent. Gratuitous. Insane. Not to mention awesome. Certainly the most memorable video in recent memory. People talked about it for weeks. Analyzed every frame. Debated its content. It was sensational. And a sensation. “Alejandro,” although a fine, arty and expensive-looking thing, drew the unenviable task of having to follow all that. Which is not to say that it’s not a great video, because it certainly is. And to that end, if any other artist released it, they would have been lauded as brilliant for breathing life back into music videos. But since it’s Gaga’s name at the top, “Alejandro” was greeted with muted applause, perhaps even a stifled yawn or two. This is what happens when you’re (arguably) the biggest pop star on the planet, and you’ve made a career out of titillating, tweaking and breaking boundaries. People are always going to be wondering what’s next. And eventually, well, you reach a point where nothing you do can top your last stunt. And, yes, I realize that the majority of Gaga’s “little monsters” positively loved “Alejandro.” But then again, they love everything she does. They don’t really count in the grand scheme of things. Take a look at the bigger picture. It really seems that, for the first time I can certainly remember, a fair amount of critics and fans — be they casual or die-hard — are willing to step forward and say that they were less-than-impressed. This is a key moment in Lady Gaga’s career. Short of setting herself on fire in her next video — probably something she’s considered — I don’t know what she can do for an encore. And even then, people will probably say she’s just doing the same thing she did in the “Bad Romance” video. It’s not really fair, nor is it justified, but one day after its premiere, for all its gloss and glamour, “Alejandro” is already looking like it could be Lady Gaga’s first shark-jumping, fridge-nuking moment. Perhaps even her first misfire. This is the downside to continually churning out jaw-dropping work. Eventually, the jaws just don’t drop as far as they used to. Gaga has spent the past two years becoming an international icon, the first truly massive star of the 21st century. Now, she might have to deal with the reality that she just can’t impress forever. Then again, let’s just wait three months for the premiere of her next music video — I can’t wait to hear what people will be saying about “Alejandro” then. Heavy is the head that wears the crown. Or steampunk-inspired harness. Whatever. Questions? Concerns? Hit me up at BTTS@MTVStaff.com . Related Photos The Evolution Of: Lady Gaga

Recycling Artist Creates Portraits From Old Cassettes

Photo via Iri5 While reusing the licks, riffs, and lyrics of other artists is fairly common practice in the music world today, one visual artist has begun recycling aging music collections and turning them into truly original creations. Nary a music connoisseur alive doesn’t have a few cassette tapes floating around or tucked away in a closet somewhere, safely out of sight. Tubthumping, anyone? But instead of letting those tapes rot away, or worse, fall into the hands of future generations–w… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Diddy Lends Energy to Uninspired Comedy ‘Greek’

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – Having swiped the spotlight from top-billed castmates on more than one occasion, Jonah Hill and Russell Brand are rewarded with lead status in “Get Him to the Greek,” only to see the show stolen by others, notably the artist formerly known as P. Diddy. A reunion with Forgetting Sarah Marshall director Nicholas Stoller that pays far fewer comic dividends, the stop-start R-rated excursion never achieves the propulsive traction and outrageous/endearing balance that made The Hangover such a smash this time last year. Lacking a sturdier venue, the fat boy and the bad boy are at best opening acts in a moviegoing season powered by headliners. As such, the Universal release, which opens Friday (June 4), will not likely prove to be a sizable draw, though the scarcity of bawdy, male-skewing comedies in the marketplace could work in its favor. Reprising his foppish British rocker character from the Jason Segel -penned Sarah Marshall , Brand plays Aldous Snow, who has since been in a career free fall. Reeling from a disastrous concept single/video (the reviled “African Child”) and a split from girlfriend Jackie Q (a terrific Rose Byrne), Aldous has taken a potentially irreparable plunge off the wagon. Enter Hill’s Aaron Green, an ambitious record company executive in the employ of the certifiably nutty Sergio Roma (Sean Combs), who thinks that the upcoming 10th anniversary of Snow’s triumphant concert at Los Angeles’ famed Greek Theater could make for a lucrative comeback gig. Liking what he hears, Sergio gives Aaron three days to fetch Snow from London and personally escort him to the Greek, with the caveat that he will be dealing with “the worst person on Earth.” Needless to say, there will be a lot of rerouting on the trip back, but despite the occasional onscreen appearance of a digital countdown clock, writer-director Stoller never seems to be in any hurry to move the characters and plot along. Although Brand, who makes for credible damaged rock ‘n’ roll goods with a singing voice to match, and a subdued Hill manage to lay down a few scattered, genuinely funny riffs, the larger laughs are provided by the supporting players. Combs doesn’t so much deliver his lines as announce them, and every time he pops up, he lends the listless proceedings a gonzo boost; and Byrne’s bubbly Brit pop star hits the inspired mark. Detours to New York and Las Vegas provide for a slew of cameos, including Lars Ulrich, Christina Aguilera, Pink, Rick Schroder and, in a show of NBC Universal corporate solidarity, “Today’s” Meredith Vieira and a green-room guest, noted economist Paul Krugman. But even with the personality parade, “Greek” never really finds its comic bearings.
