Kanye West Ropes In Nicki Minaj, John Legend, Swizz Beatz, Others for ‘Power’ Remix

‘I might have to put out 5 albums this year … My spirit is full ,’ Kanye tweeted. By Gil Kaufman Kanye West Photo: Robyn Beck/ AFP/ Getty Images Now that Kanye West is back on his grind, the LV Don appears determined to push harder than ever to produce unique music. Case in point: Over the past five days, in addition to performing at an intimate club show on Thursday, where he covered songs by Rihanna and Billy Joel and was joined by Estelle, Yeezy hit the studio to work on a remix of “Power” with an all-star cast. Given his new status as the Titan of Twitter, he, of course, tweeted about the progress of the sessions. “Scheduled studio visits 2day, Nikki [Minaj], John Legend, Mos Def, Swizz Beatz, Pusha T, Phillip Lim,” he wrote of a remix session that roped in everyone from the newlywed producer he has called one of the greatest of all time ( Beatz ), to Clipse member T and piano man Legend, who tickled the ivories for ‘Ye at Thursday night’s show. He likened the sessions to the all-star power summits of the early jazz era, writing, “remember jazz musicians used to collab and do 4 song albums or James Brown used to just keep dropping sh– back to back.” In that spirit, West added, “I might have to put out 5 albums this year … My spirit is full … My heart is open … People want new music … I can’t hold it back.” And that wasn’t all. He uploaded a photo from the studio that featured him with Beatz and Def, as well as another pal who knows a thing or two about harnessing the power: Los Angeles Lakers legend Kobe Bryant. “Kobe helped me finish my #POWER remix verse … Just building on the concept of #POWE… and Mos helped me find the ‘old me’ lyrically,” he explained early Sunday morning. After a “super late” night in the lab with Mos that lasted early into Sunday morning, West said he was feeling so inspired that he actually had to unplug himself before he laid down the longest verse in rap history. “I had to cut my POWER remix verse short to not over do it with the million bar verse like the 2nd verse of ‘See Me Now,’ ” he wrote. “There’s so many ways to break down the subject of power … me and Kobe went in on it… Perfect person to help out on that.” In addition to teasing a possible Justin Bieber/Raekwon collabo , throwing out some random props to M.I.A., Matt & Kim, and Fiona Apple, and taking a break to go jogging (in Lanvin gear, of course), ‘Ye ended what sounded like a sleepless weekend on a creative and emotional high. “Sometimes I can’t control my excitement,” he wrote Sunday afternoon. “So happy … so creative … in the studio … ready to create … finished ‘Power’ verse … more music.” And, in keeping with his status as the new pied piper poet of Twitter, ‘Ye — who will appear at this year’s MTV VMAs on September 12 — wrapped the creative marathon with an early morning tweet on Monday that summed up his new philosophy: “I’m just tryna keep it symmetrical.” Right. The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday, September 12, at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for the winners in general categories, including Best New Artist, from Tuesday (August 3) through September 12. Rick Ross Talks T.I., Jadakiss, Erykah Badu Callabos

‘The time was right,’ Ross says of Tip lacing ‘Maybach Music III.’ By Shaheem Reid Rick Ross Photo: MTV News Earlier this week, Erykah Badu released a video for the remix of “Window Seat” that features Rick Ross. That collaboration led to the singer appearing on Ross’ song “Maybach Music III,” which appears on his acclaimed new album Teflon Don . “She never really collaborated with a lot of artists outside of Outkast,” Ross explained. “Maybe another artist or two, [like] the Roots. It was always conscious music she was making. You know, a gritty street artist — that’s always a plus when you get to work with somebody with the flowers around them and [they’re] burning incense. And it’s positive.” Ross was a longtime admirer of Badu’s work, which made the idea of working with her intriguing. “Her music always attracted me; it was always attractive to my kind of music,” he said. “Once we collaborated with the ‘Window Seat’ remix … the lanes of communication was open, I was like, ‘Let’s do something different.’ ” The track, which was produced by the J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League, also features T.I. and Jadakiss. “I felt the time was right for me and T.I. [to work together],” the Bawse explained. “We had never personally collaborated with each other on a record one on one. Early on in my career, I had said [negative] things when I didn’t know him. Just us being bosses and us being leaders and us being examples, we bossed up. We both did. He came from home doing what he did. I did my thing.” But as time passed, the animosity waned, and Ross asked Tip to collaborate. “Just on a mutual respect for each other, I reached out to him. When I got that verse back, I was like, ‘He meant that.’ We had been seeing each other over a period of time, saluting each other, bumping into each other, he knew I was a fan of his. We captured that moment in time which was one of the dopest records. And that meant the most to me. I used to play that T.I. verse in my studio, like, ‘This set the tone, right here. It set the tone.’ It just felt good for the homie to lace me. I salute Tip.” Ross brought Jadakiss, a longtime friend, on “Maybach” as well. “Jada was always that New York underdog,” he said. “That next lyricist. You could be the hottest at the time, but if you slippin’, Jada is one record away. He’s a cool dude, somebody I got a mutual respect and a friendship with.” This week, Ross released a new track online, “Summer’s Mine,” where he takes aim at his competition. “Bitch I run the south/ I’m what you wanna be,” he raps. “This how you wanna live/ This what you wanna drive/ Be honest with yourself/ I’m who you idolize.” What do you think of Ross’ “Maybach Music III”? How does it rank with the previous tracks? Tell us in the comments!

Justin Bieber, Kanye West Tweet About Possible Collaboration

‘Ye and Bieber also chat about working with Wu-Tang Clan’s Raekwon. By Mawuse Ziegbe Justin Bieber Photo: Scott Legato/ FilmMagic Sunday (August 15) was an eventful day for Kanye West, Justin Bieber and Raekwon’s Twitter followers. The Louis Vuitton Don, the Biebs and the Chef chatted on the social-networking website about teaming up to record what would likely be a mind-blowing collaboration. It all began on Sunday morning when Yeezy typed that he had contracted Bieber Fever and was digging the Canadian teen’s music. “Listening to @Justin Bieber ‘Run Away love,’ ” West tweeted. “I love Sunday mornings in the crib.” About an hour later, Yeezy revealed that not only did he have the Bieber track on repeat, he shares a similar song title on his upcoming album. “But I have listened to Runaway Love about 10 times so far,” West wrote. “Ironically I got a song called Runaway on my new album too.” Rarely do the outspoken lyricist’s musings go unnoticed and soon Bieber began responding to ‘Ye’s Twitter props. “It’s not a so what moment for me. I’m 16 and a fan. I’m kinda hyped u are listening to my stuff. Thank u. Nice sunday morning,” Bieber replied. ‘Ye continued the e-love-fest and proposed that he, Bieber and Rae work on a track together. “I’m honored that you like my Music @JustinBieber!!!” West tweeted. “You gotta hear the album. Maybe we can do something together. Me, You and Raekwon.” After bringing up the idea of throwing the Chef into the mix, ‘Ye explained that Rae once jumped on one of his much-loved R&B and hip-hop collabos. “Yo [Wu-Tang Clan’s Ghostface] and Rae were on one of my favorite Jodeci remixes of all time,” West wrote. ‘Ye also suggested that the Staten Island MC should bring his Wu flavor to Bieber’s music. “Maybe me and Rae should hop on Runaway Love! FLEX would drop bombs!” Melding the gritty, boom-bap sounds of Raekwon with the cheery soulful pop of Justin Bieber and the genre-straddling jams of Kanye West might appear challenging. However, Bieber, who tweeted that he plays an acoustic version of ‘Ye’s 808s and Heartbreak hit, “Heartless,” said that he’s up for the task. “Me, u, and the chef 2gether on a song = EPIC,” Bieber wrote. “Might sound crazy 2 u but even having this convo is living the dream. Thanks.” Although Rae didn’t type a response to either artist, the Only Built 4 Cuban Linx MC did re-tweet Bieber’s reply. Ke$ha Ready To Face Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga At The Video Music Awards

‘It’s gonna be hard taking the Biebs down,’ the ‘Tik Tok’ singer tells MTV News about her Best New Artist nom. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Christina Garibaldi Ke$ha Photo: MTV News Ke$ha will storm this September’s Video Music Awards with four nominations — she picked up three for her infectious breakthrough single “Tik Tok,” as well as one for “My First Kiss,” her duet with 3Oh!3. But the singer isn’t quite sure she’ll be able to wrest the Best New Artist Moonman from windswept heartthrob Justin Bieber . “It’s gonna be hard taking the Biebs down,” she told MTV News. “It’s gonna be hard, but my fans — we can do it!” Justin Bieber isn’t Ke$ha’s only stiff competition on September 12; the brash singer is also up for Best Female Video against heavy hitters like Lady Gaga, Beyonc

Flo Rida ‘Looks Forward’ To David Guetta Bringing Home A VMA

Guetta is up against Lady Gaga, Usher and others for Best Dance Music Video at the 2010 Video Music Awards. By Akshay Bhansali David Guetta Photo: Raymond Boyd/Michael Ochs Archives/Getty Images As if working with the Black Eyed Peas, Akon and Rihanna weren’t enough of a signal of international dance music’s crossover star David Guetta ‘s two-year ascension to the top of the American urban pop-music scene, the French house-music producer is up for a Moonman at this year’s Video Music Awards . Nominated for Best Dance Music Video for his hit single “Sexy Chick,” featuring Akon, Guetta is up against some stiff competition for his big night in L.A. on September 12. His fellow nominees include Usher for “OMG,” German dance group Cascada (remember “Everytime We Touch”?) for “Evacuate the Dancefloor” and Enrique Iglesias’ “I Like It,” featuring Snooki, the Situation and company. And let’s not forget the biggest of elephants in the room, Lady Gaga for “Bad Romance.” Still, DGuetta’s boy, rapper Flo Rida, with whom he currently has a top 10 hit in Europe with “Club Can’t Handle Me,” thinks his chances of winning are rather good. “My reaction to David Guetta being nominated for ‘Best Dance Video’? Well, he’s definitely a household name,” Flo told MTV UK today in London. “Not just nationally, but he’s internationally known. He’s a passionate dude about his music and he gets the party crunk. I look forward to him taking that home.” “The genius of him is the fact that he is a perfectionist. He strives to make sure that a record has the right gumbo,” Flo said using the analogy of the Southern dish of random ingredients that somehow just tastes right. “It moves you — having you bob your head. If you are a dancer, it will make you try some new moves. David Guetta has that work ethic and that drive to make sure he has the #1 party record, like we do right now with ‘Club Can’t Handle Me.’ ” And while fans will have to wait till the big night to find out if Guetta proves the victor, Flo Rida has a special message for all you David Guetta fans out there. “To David Guetta and his fans, y’all make sure and support him,” Flo said. “David, you know you work hard. You grind. Win or lose, I feel like you are still the winner because you have fans that are very loyal to you. So do your thing. Keep your head up.” The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday, September 12, at 9 p.m. ET. Florence And The Machine To Perform At Video Music Awards

Their ‘Dog Days Are Over’ clip is nominated for four VMAs at the September 12 show. By James Montgomery She surprised pretty much everybody when her video for “Dog Days Are Over” racked up four nominations at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards , and now, flame-haired siren Florence Welch (and, of course, the Machine too) have been tapped to perform the song on the big show, which airs September 12 at 9 p.m. ET. And yes, they’ll be aiming to surprise once again. Though, as Welch told MTV News last week, after learning of her noms, the celebs in the audience probably won’t be the only ones who can’t believe what they’re seeing. “I’m still kind of processing it, to be honest,” Welch said. “It’s such an iconic event, and it’s something I’ve watched on TV since I was a kid. It’s one of those things: It’s not real life, it’s a dream scenario. So for me to be actually a part of it feels like I’m in some sort of parallel universe. It’s kind of strange and wonderful and terrifying all at the same time.” And that’s a pretty good way to describe everything Florence and the Machine do (no wonder we picked them as “Artists to Watch” way back in January). From Welch’s flowing gowns and epic, downright ethereal voice to the harpist she employs and the fresh-cut flowers she insists on decorating her mic stand with before each show, she’s sure to raise more than a few eyebrows and probably win some new fans at the VMAs next month. And one of her fellow nominees can’t wait to see her play live: B.o.B, who told MTV News last week that that he’s a huge fan of Welch and is expecting big things from her on VMA night. “Oh, man, I dig Florence so much. I listened to her perform ‘Dog Days Are Over’ at Coachella, and she’s amazing,” he said. “I hope she performs, and I hope she wins everything. I think she’s awesome.” The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on September 12 at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for the winners in general categories, including Best New Artist, from now through September 12. Kanye West Shows Off His Artwork In 2005 Video

Years before he collaborated with artist Marco Brambilla for his ‘Power’ clip, ‘Ye shared some early drawings with Sway. By Jayson Rodriguez Kanye West Photo: MTV News Throughout his career, Kanye West has displayed the soul of an artist, from his austere “Can’t Tell Me Nothing” video to the just-released “moving portrait” for “Power.” Back in August 2005, the rapper spoke with MTV News about art and even showed Sway some of his early sketches. Among the collection was a colorful drinking glass, a slow-burning cigarette and a portrait of Emmett Till. “I think I was always on some sarcastic, trying to get a rise out of people [vibe],” West explained. “I tried to get something that connects more than just the glass. So this is my take on glass.” The collection also included an anime-inspired self-portrait of the “Power” superstar and another image of a man in bed whose life had passed. “This one was really hard to draw,” he said of the latter. “It was a good experience the teacher gave us. We had to deal with perspective.” He admitted, however, the sketch — dated 1995 — was not very good. “Someone should have killed me for how bad it was,” he said. West said for his videos, artwork or graphic imaging he uses drawing “as a language.” Artist Marco Brambilla directed the “Power” clip , and the artist received ‘Ye’s translation loud and clear, both for the imagery and the rapper’s forthcoming album. “I instantly connected to the themes on the album,” Brambilla told MTV News of West’s yet-untitled next LP. “The whole idea of celebrity, the idea of power, the idea of sensuality in it, there’s sexuality in it as well, and those were all kind of themes that I’ve explored in my work before. Once I heard the album, that was what clinched it, and I felt very much in tune with the message behind the music.” What do you think of Kanye’s work as an artist? Special NB Bonus: Notable Quotables that Couldn’t Fit Into the Regular August 9 Edition

Too much bias, not enough space. Collecting quotes for the latest edition of MRC’s bi-weekly Notable Quotables , I found more outrageous liberal eruptions than could fit into the normal newsletter. So, just for NewsBusters readers, here are a dozen worthy quotes that just couldn’t squeeze into the regular issue: ■ Confusing Tired Liberal Cliches with Economic Strategy “Let’s let the entire slew of Bush tax cuts retire. That would take us back to Clinton-era rates, when the American economy had its strongest growth years in three decades and the budget was balanced for the first time in four decades. If the economy still needs a bit more stimulus, fine, extend unemployment benefits for another year. Give some aid to the states. Those are temporary measures, and the money will get spent. Unemployment benefits work because they go to people who are living from paycheck to paycheck. They spend the money….This massive change actually requires that Congress do nothing. Let the tax cuts expire. A do-nothing Congress will have done something truly important for the country’s future.” — Newsweek international editor Fareed Zakaria hosting CNN’s Fareed Zakaria GPS , August 1. ■ Fox News: “Whipping Up White Hysteria” “Also for weeks Fox News and its friends have been whipping up white hysteria over allegations that members of the New Black Panther Party, two of them, intimidated voters in Philadelphia two years ago. The Justice Department found insufficient evidence to investigate the case and now all seven Senate Republicans on the U.S. Judiciary committee of the Senate want the Justice Department investigated itself. Is this yet another example of a rightist strategy to stir up racial resentment among whites by portraying whites as victims of black rule in this country?” — MSNBC host Chris Matthews on Hardball , July 27. ■ Ann Hits Joe from the Left: “How Long Can We Pay for This War?” “The House on Tuesday night agreed to fund a surge in Afghanistan — $33 billion for 30,000 additional troops. But, boy, was there some reluctance. We’ve got Democratic Congressman Jim McGovern saying, quote, ‘We’re told we can’t extend unemployment or pay to keep cops on the beat or teachers in the classroom but we’re asked to borrow another $33 billion for nation building in Afghanistan. I think we need to do more nation building here at home.’ How long can we keep paying for this war?” — NBC’s Ann Curry to Vice President Joe Biden on Today , July 29. ■ Don’t Confuse Us MSNBCers With “Journalists With an Agenda” “I am offended the right is using this as a sledgehammer against those of us who don’t practice activist journalism. Journolist was pretty offensive. Those of us who are mainstream journalists got mixed in with journalists with an agenda. Those folks who thought they were improving journalism are destroying the credibility of journalism. This has kept me up nights. I try to be fair. It’s very depressing.” — NBC White House correspondent and MSNBC daytime host Chuck Todd, as quoted by The Politico ’s Roger Simon in a July 28 article . ■ Andrew Breitbart: Just a “Smash-Mouth” “Smear Artist” “Andrew Breitbart was not an unknown. He is a notorious smear artist and practitioner of what’s sometimes called smash-mouth politics. And they [the Obama White House] should’ve realized that any kind of allegation that he made needed to be checked out very carefully before anybody acted upon it.” — Newsweek ’s Jonathan Alter on NPR’s All Things Considered , July 21. ■ Democratic Corruption or Ethics Committee Racism? “Are the ethics police on the Hill color-blind? If so, just how do you explain what’s happening to the Congressional Black Caucus? The latest on the [Charles] Rangel and Maxine Waters investigations….” “Coming up here, are black lawmakers being singled out by the ethics watchdogs on Capitol Hill? New charges of racial bias….” — NBC correspondent Andrea Mitchell teasing an upcoming segment on her 1pm ET MSNBC A ndrea Mitchell Reports , August 2. “Some are openly questioning why two high profile African-American House members are coming under such tough scrutiny…..[to Al Sharpton] Do you think that black members are being targeted unfairly by the ethics committee?” — CNN anchor Don Lemon on the 6pm ET Newsroom , August 1. ■ “One Brave Soldier” vs. Obama’s Nazi-esque “War Machine” Host Larry King: “What’s your reaction to the WikiLeaks, the Afghan War documents?” Left-wing filmmaker Michael Moore: “I think that we have this war machine that was built on a lie a number of years ago — incredible lies — that have cost thousands of lives, billions of dollars. And one brave soldier by the name of Bradley Manning decided that the truth had to be told. And he said that he was willing to do it regardless of the consequences — and he essentially followed the Nuremberg principles which is when you see something going on like this, when you see war crimes being committed, when you see lies being told in order to bring a country to war, you have to speak out against it. You can’t just line up and be a good German and do what you’re told to do.” — Exchange on CNN’s Larry King Live , July 27. ■ CNN Host Slams Fox as “Not a News Organization” Host Rick Sanchez: “Well, I understand the Associated Press. I even understand Bloomberg, but don’t have you to be a news organization to get that seat?” White House correspondent Ed Henry: “Oh! Are you saying Fox is not a news organization?” Sanchez: “Yeah. I’m just wondering.” — CNN’s Rick’s List , August 2, discussing the White House Correspondents Association decision to move the Fox News correspondent to the front row of the White House briefing room. ■ Crazy Beck vs. Limbaugh the Faker   “I sort of dig on Glenn Beck. He reminds me of certain people you encounter in big cities. You know, the ones wearing robes, sandals, and signs proclaiming that the world is going to end because American men are eating too much red meat and American women are wearing their pants too tight. He’s crazy but — like those urban nutcakes — he actually seems to believe what he’s saying I can get behind that. Rush Limbaugh, on the other hand, gives me the creeps. He sounds saner than Beck (well, marginally), but there’s absolutely no conviction in that sonorous, slightly flabby voice….He says what his listeners want to hear, but when it comes to actual convictions, I’m always reminded of what Gertrude Stein said about her hometown of Oakland: ‘There isn’t any there there.’” — Novelist Stephen King in his “The Pop of King” column in the August 6 issue of Entertainment Weekly . ■ Expecting “Tough” and “Real” Questions from The View “I would be willing to bet you that he [President Obama] might get tougher questions asked of him on The View than he would at a White House press conference….More real. More where we live….They ask pertinent questions. But I think the questions that will be asked of him on The View might resonate more with the way people live in this country.” — MSNBC contributor Mike Barnicle on Morning Joe , July 27. vs . Co-host Joy Behar: “Do you know that Lindsey Lohan is in jail?…Does Mel Gibson need anger management?…Should Snooki run as mayor of Wasilla?” Co-host Sherri Shepherd: “Mr. President, do you Tweet?”… Co-host Whoopi Goldberg: “What’s the first couple of songs on your iPod?”… Co-host Barbara Walters: “Were you invited to Chelsea Clinton’s wedding?” — Actual questions posed to Obama on The View , July 29.
