Dancers broke the record for Longest Team Dance Marathon. By Gil Kaufman Dancers participate in the Longest Team Dance Marathon at O Music Awards 2 Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images They came, they danced, they kept on dancing and then they danced a bit more and set a Guinness World Record. And it all happened at the O Music Awards on Monday night when a group of tireless hoofers grinded it out for 24 hours to snatch the Guinness record for the Longest Team Dance Marathon . The group of dancers — a lucky 13 — assembled at the Roxy in Hollywood on Halloween Eve to kick off their attempt with some musical assistance from DJ Diamond Kuts. And then they were off, tearing it up, with minimal five-minute breaks per hour, for 24 hours. And it was all for a good cause, to raise awareness for National Bullying Prevention Month and to raise cash for a number of anti-bullying campaigns from groups including GLAAD, GLSEN, GSA Network, HRC and the It Gets Better Project and Trevor Project. At one point less than 12 minutes before the record was set, one of the night’s co-hosts, D-Trix, pulled aside dancer Danielle and asked her how it was going. Doing a kind of slow-motion “Saturday Night Fever” hip-sway and point when asked how she was doing, she said, “Oh fantastic, but I can’t wait for this thing to be over.” When they finally crashed the 24-hour mark, it was like New Year’s Eve, with balloons falling from the ceiling and lots of whooping. The dancers celebrated by stomping the balloons and, well, doing a bit more dancing to MC Hammer’s “U Can’t Touch This,” pausing only to receive their official Guinness World Record certificate. The dance record was just one of the highlights of the show, which featured killer performances from Mac Miller, the Band Perry, the Alabama Shakes and traffic-stopping headliner Robyn , as well as special appearances by Kelly Clarkson , Tyler, the Creator, Demi Lovato, Travie McCoy, John Cho and Kal Penn. There were, of course, plenty of awards handed out as well, including nods to Adam Lambert (Must Follow Artist on Twitter), Joe Jonas (Best Lyrics Video, “See No More”), Lovato (Best Artist With a Camera Phone), Nirvana (Best Vintage Viral Video, “Smells Like Teen Spirit”) and Bj
Amy Winehouse Lioness: Hidden Treasures will feature previously unreleased tracks. By Gil Kaufman Amy Winehouse Photo: MTV News The world will finally get to hear the music Amy Winehouse was working on before her unexpected death earlier this year. According to a press release from her English label, a posthumous collection of unheard studio tracks, Lioness: Hidden Treasures, will be released on December 5. The 12 tracks on the disc were put together by Winehouse’s longtime collaborators, producers Mark Ronson and Salaam Remi, and will include songs she recorded before, during and after the releases of her two studio albums, 2003’s Frank and her smash 2006 breakthrough Back to Black . “It was said by all who worked with Amy that she never sang or played a song the same way twice,” read the release announcing the disc. “It quickly became apparent to Salaam and Mark that they had a collection of songs that deserved to be heard, a collection of songs that were a fitting testament to Amy the artist and, as importantly, Amy their friend.” The disc is a “chronicle of her musical development” and will feature alternate takes of previously released songs, including a demo version of “Wake Up Alone” and mellower takes of “Tears Dry on Their Own” and “Valerie,” as well as her recently released Tony Bennett duet, “Body & Soul.” It will also have a number of covers, such as the Shirelles’ “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow,” Donny Hathaway’s “A Song for You” (with just Amy and her guitar, recorded at her London home in the spring of 2009 in the midst of the singer’s struggles with drugs and alcohol) and a 2002 reggae version of the classic ’60s doo-wop song by Ruby & the Romantics “Our Day Will Come.” Winehouse died in July at age 27 as a result of excessive alcohol intake. “I spent so much time chasing after Amy, telling her off, that I never realized what a true genius she was,” her father, Mitch Winehouse, said. “It wasn’t until I sat down with the rest of the family and listened to this album that I fully appreciated the breadth of Amy’s talent, from jazz standards to hip-hop songs, it really took my breath away.” Among the unreleased songs are “Halftime” and “The Girl From Ipanema,” which were cut during sessions for Winehouse’s debut, Frank . The standard “Ipanema,” in fact, was the first song an 18-year-old Winehouse sang when she flew to Miami to record with Remi, who said in the release that Amy’s reinterpretation of the bossa nova classic made him realize that, “I was dealing with a very special talent. Her approach to the song was so young and fresh, it really inspired the rest of our sessions.” Mitch Winehouse said he’d never heard the “incredibly beautiful” song “Halftime” before, but that if the family “had felt that this album wasn’t up to the standard of Frank and Back to Black, we would never have agreed to release it and we believe it will stand as a fitting tribute to Amy’s musical legacy.” One of the most recent tracks is a duet with Amy’s hip-hop pal Nas titled “Like Smoke,” which was recorded in May 2008. Another unheard song, “Between the Cheats,” is reportedly a take on Winehouse’s troubled marriage to ex-husband Blake Fielder-Civil, recorded in May 2008 for possible inclusion on her third album. Fans will also hear “Best Friends,” a Remi-produced track from 2003 that used to serve as Amy’s live show opener. Winehouse had been working on her follow-up to Black for two years before her death, but it is unknown if the upcoming release represents the totality of the music she recorded during that period, of if there could be another collection in the offing sometime in the future. Some of the proceeds from the sales of the album will go to the Amy Winehouse Foundation, a charity set up by the singer’s family to fight addiction. Let’s be real, a lot of entertainers get high. We mean really high. There’s a reason cocaine is commonly referred to in the hood as “that Whitney” and bum weed is labeled “Bobby Brown.” Rappers and singers such as Gucci Mane (“Wasted”), Amy Winehouse (“Rehab”) and tons of others even flaunt their ability to get sh*tfaced in their music. And they don’t only get ‘white boy wasted’ behind closed doors or in club settings. Here are 10 TV and web appearances where the artist was clearly inebriated by mind-altering substances. Congrats to Lynne Ramsay, Tilda Swinton and the rest of Team We Need to Talk About Kevin , which knocked off the awards-y likes of The Descendants , The Artist and Shame to emerge as best in show at this year’s BFI London Film Festival. “We were struck by the sheer panache displayed by these great storytellers,” said jury chief John Madden. “In the end, we were simply bowled over by one film, a sublime, uncompromising tale of the torment that can stand in the place of love.” Yowza! Sounds like my Friday nights. Someone give me a trophy! [ THR ]
With collabos between Lil Wayne and Joe Jonas, Taylor Swift and T.I., the lines separating music genres are increasingly becoming blurred. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber Photo: FilmMagic In a modern music landscape where genre is pretty much nonexistent, the lines are becoming even further blurred. That’s why music lovers barely flinched when news broke that Justin Bieber will work with Kanye West and his “homey” Drake on his next album . However, more than a decade ago, major mainstream artists like Britney Spears or even *NSYNC (whose very own Justin Timberlake later went on to work with hip-hoppers) would never have thought about hooking up with rappers like Eminem, for instance. In fact, they were the punch line to many of Em’s finest rhymes during the “TRL” era. Today, pop stars and rap stars are unapologetically sharing their love for one another. Lil Wayne, who recently worked with artists including Joe Jonas and Jennifer Lopez, seems to be one of the guys leading the charge. In addition to appearing on tracks with pop stars, Demi Lovato’s and Bieber’s covers of his track “How to Love” have made headlines. So, what is it about Weezy? “I just loved the way that Lil Wayne took a risk doing the song ‘How to Love,’ ” Lovato explained. “And when I really listened to it, it’s such a great song.” That enthusiasm for his work, according to Vibe Music Editor John Kennedy, has a lot to do with Weezy “the man” as well as Weezy “the artist.” “Wayne appeals to the pop world because he’s obviously got a tremendous following and is a talented artist, but he’s a character outside of the music. His image off-wax is just as prominent as his rhymes on record,” he explained. “So when you get Wayne on a record, it’s more than just a hot 16, you’re getting a rebel to society: the sagging denims, tats all over, diamond grills. It just adds rock star flavor with hip-hop appeal.” “On an artistic level, he just seems like an exciting guy to be around who is also willing to try just about everything, so I imagine pop stars can basically say, ‘Hey, can you do this weird thing?’ and he’d say yes,” Entertainment Weekly staff writer Kyle Anderson added about Wayne’s appeal. “From a more business standpoint, working with Wayne not only means chart and radio recognition but also instant cool. He has a cachet that hasn’t faded yet.” But Wayne is hardly the only guy in the game defying the laws of hip-hop and pop. Country superstar Taylor Swift has certainly done her part, appearing in concert with guys like T.I. and B.o.B. “I’m a huge hip-hop fan, and it’s been so amazing to have so many incredible artists come out and to get to sing the hooks on their songs that I’ve been blasting in my car for the last couple years,” she explained. “It’s been awesome. I couldn’t have asked for more amazing special guests on this tour, and we’re not finished yet.” But it’s not just the pop stars singing the praises of rappers and hoping to get some street cred. Rappers are clamoring to hook up with their pop counterparts too, picking up where artists like Mariah Carey/O.D.B. and Christina Aguilera/Redman left off. And recently, Aguilera’s former pop rival, Spears, jumped on the trend when she toured with Nicki Minaj . When MTV News caught up with Minaj backstage on the Femme Fatale Tour, she said that the crossover success has been intriguing and surprising. “I’m always surprised,” she said. “I don’t really expect them to know all the records, but I guess it just kind of transcends all genres of music at this point.” As the genre-bending continues, it seems that the pairings are likely to get more and more unexpected. “I met Justin [Bieber] back in February. He’s a cool kid and sh–,” Tyler, the Creator said of his desire to work with the teen star. “When I got in there, he was talkin’ about the ‘Yonkers’ video and sh–. It was weird, because I was sitting here starstruck, like, ‘Oh, f—, it’s Bieber. He’s asking me questions.’ I’m like, ‘Shut the f— up so I can talk to you.’ ” What do you think of the pop/ hip-hop crossover? Tell us in the comments. Related Photos A Very Bieber Christmas

Mariah Carey may soon release a duet with Justin Bieber , but she made news this week for hanging with even younger, more adorable children. The singer and husband Nick Cannon showed off six-month-old twins Moroccan and Monroe to the world! “It’s just love,” Carey told Barbara Walters in an interview with her family and about her family. “It’s a beautiful place to be.” The couple is unlikely to have more kids, Carey said, due to her difficult pregnancy. But she could not be happy with the new little men in her life – or with the big one, Cannon. Following a failed marriage to Tommy Mottola in 1998, it took awhile for the artist to be ready to truly fall for anyone else. “Initially I was afraid of the concept of marriage [again],” Mariah said. “But this is a different situation and a different time in my life… No one will steal my spirit.”
Mack Maine was reluctant to green-light a second Wayne/ Bow Wow track, producer Detail tells Mixtape Daily. By Rob Markman Lil Wayne Photo: FilmMagic Behind the Beats: Detail Bow Wow has a bone to pick with the industry. After breaking into rap as a kid at the age of 13 in 2000, the now grown-up Bow is feeling a little Underrated, as the title of his upcoming December 6 Cash Money album suggests. For his latest single, “Sweat,” the now 24-year-old Bow Wow recruited Lil Wayne for a feature and producer Detail for the track. “Obviously everybody knows I got a very diverse sound — I can do pop, I can do rock, I can do hip-hop, R&B,” the very confident “How to Love” beatmaker told Mixtape Daily. “For me it’s just a matter of studying the artist and kinda coming up with a formula that’s more natural for them.” On “Sweat,” Detail laid a slow-rolling, pulsating pop track for Bow, who often seems to struggle with getting fans to accept that he is no longer the little pup he once was. Bow sings in Auto-Tune over the track, creating an aura of sexual seduction with his explicit lyrics. Wayne of course adds his unique brand of flirtatious, double-timed raps. As good as the single sounds, Detail told Mixtape Daily that the collaboration almost didn’t come to pass. Wayne and Bow Wow had already cut a record together, and Young Money president Mack Maine was in no big rush to make a second track. That changed when Detail sent him the beat after the two talked at Wayne’s Tha Carter IV release party in Los Angeles. “At Lil Wayne’s Carter IV release party, I was talking to [Maine] about the ‘Sweat’ record. He hadn’t even heard [it]. He was like, ‘[Wayne] already got a record with Bow Wow,’ ” Detail recalled of his and Mack’s conversation. Given Detail’s track record for crafting hit singles with Young Money, Mack agreed to listen to the beat, which the producer sent him right away. “He hit me back and said, ‘Damn that bitch is a beast,’ ” Detail said. “So when he said that, I knew off the top that this motherf—er gonna go.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines .
