Why Did Lady Gaga Go To VMAs As Jo Calderone?

Creative director Laurieann Gibson takes MTV News behind Gaga’s ‘performance art.’ By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga performs at the 2011 VMAs Photo: Getty Images When Lady Gaga showed up at the 2011 Video Music Awards , she wasn’t Lady Gaga anymore; she was Jo Calderone. Gaga’s creative director, Laurieann Gibson, spoke to MTV News days before the show went live, and she explained why Gaga wanted to stay in character all night long. “The idea of her being a performance artist — and it’s starting the performance on the red carpet and the idea that the performance never ends for her — is the first time I’ve experienced this with an artist,” she said. “I love it. That’s something that is specific to her, and the whole night was the performance, and it was important that Jo was a part of the whole night.” Gaga — or, rather, Calderone — opened the show with a lengthy monologue before launching into Gaga’s “Yo

Tyler The Creator Wins Best New Artist, Says Bruno Mars Sucks

“I wanna ***** thank everyone *****. I’ve been dreaming about this **** since I was 9! I just wanna ***! I can’t *** & ****.” – Tyler, The Creator. Tyler The Creator was among the MTV VMA winners Sunday, but a slam of Bruno Mars and expletive-laden acceptance speech drew more buzz. Fortunately, he won’t be killing himself. We think. During the pre-show, when Tyler realized he was at the bottom of MTV’s Tweet Tracker and Bruno Mars was up top, he told MTV host Sway that Mars’ music “sucked” and if he lost the Best New Artist award to Mars, “I might kill myself.” He did not. Tyler The Creator won for “Yonkers” (below). Did he deserve it? Tyler The Creator – Yonkers

VMA House Artist Jessie J Takes MTV Quiz

Singer, who has a broken foot, says she’s ‘still going to wild out’ at Sunday night’s Video Music Awards. By Kelley L. Carter Jessie J Photo: MTV News Oops! We wouldn’t let her do it again. British singer Jessie J took part in our MTV Video Music Awards mock trivia game, and she messed up the answer to our initial question of what song Britney Spears sang during her debut performance. She guessed “Oops! … I Did It Again.” Wrong answer. The right answer, of course, was “Baby … One More Time.” “Oh! That was obvious!” she exclaimed. “Shall we do it again, and I can get it right?” Nope, not this time, Jessie! She also missed our question about how many Video Music Awards nominations Katy Perry has this year, and when asked who the next most-nominated artist was, she guessed: “Lil Wayne? Beyonc

VMA Performer Chris Brown A ‘Champ,’ Busta Rhymes Says

‘Look at Me Now’ collaborator Rhymes won’t say whether he’ll join CB onstage at the VMAs. By Rob Markman Chris Brown and Busta Rhymes in the “Look at Me Now” music video Photo: Jive Look at Chris Brown now. While the singer and prolific performer dominated headlines for years, the focus hasn’t always been solely on his music. But as we inch closer to the 2011 Video Music Awards , Busta Rhymes expects big things from his buddy. “You know, for Chris especially, this is probably his first run where the obstacles aren’t like they have been for him over the last couple of years, so he really got something to get off his chest,” Busta Rhymes told MTV News on the red carpet of the BMI Urban Awards on Friday night in Los Angeles. “I think people have been seeing that with just his whole success run this year.” Two years after his assault of then-girlfriend Rihanna, Brown has turned attention back to his musical accomplishments in 2011. He has flooded the charts with a number of singles from his F.A.M.E. album, including “Deuces,” “She Ain’t You,” “Beautiful People” and of course his multiple VMA-nominated “Look at Me Now,” featuring Lil Wayne and Busta. “He definitely bounced back like a G and a champ,” Bussa Bus said. “I’m saluting him and I’m proud of him.” And as choreographers Rich and Tone build up our anticipation of Chris Brown’s performance at the VMAs , Busta wouldn’t confirm or deny his participation in the set. “I can’t really give you any details,” the Brooklyn rapper said of Sunday’s performance. “I don’t know what we’re gonna do. I don’t know what he’s gonna do.” The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday from Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8. Joe Jonas Will Present Chris Brown In VMA ‘1,000 Percent Mode’

Brown’s ‘Look at Me Now,’ featuring Lil Wayne and Busta Rhymes, is up for two Video Music Awards. By Jocelyn Vena Joe Jonas performs at the Lifebeat concert Photo: Imeh Akpanudosen/ Getty Images Joe Jonas is set to present at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards , and he has a very specific job to do when the show goes live Sunday night (August 28) from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles: He’ll be supporting his “See No More” pal Chris Brown . “I’m gonna be introducing Chris Brown, his performance , which is going to be a lot of fun,” Jonas told MTV News at Saturday night’s Lifebeat concert , less than 24 hours until show time. “And to be able to work with Chris and see him perform, I love watching him play.” Years before the two would work together on Jonas’ Fast Life single, Brown made his star-making VMA debut four years ago, lighting up the show in sparkling Las Vegas. “I remember his VMA performance couple years back,” Jonas said. “It was unreal: Him dancing on the tables. [It] should be exciting to see him play again.” While fans went crazy for his 2007 performance, Brown is set to up the ante this year. Choreographers Rich and Tone recently dished to us that Brown plans to go hard when he takes the stage. “You’re definitely gonna see Chris Brown in a 1,000 percent mode,” Rich said. “Of course, everybody knows he can sing, he has great music, and aside from that, you’re going to see that he’s an amazing dancer.” In addition to performing, Brown is up for two Moonmen for Best Hip-Hop and Best Collaboration for his eye-catching Colin Tilley-directed “Look at Me Now” video, featuring Lil Wayne and Busta Rhymes. Wiz Khalifa Wants To ‘Crush’ His VMA Best New Artist Competition

‘These are all people who have their own movements,’ the ‘Black and Yellow’ MC says of fellow nominees. By Rob Markman Wiz Khalifa Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Let’s be clear, while Wiz Khalifa has respect for his fellow Best New Artist nominees, he fully excepts to beat out the competition on Sunday night at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards . “I’m trying to crush everybody,” the Rolling Papers MC told MTV News from the red carpet of the BMI Urban Awards in Los Angeles on Friday. “No disrespect, just crush them and do what I do.” Khalifa’s “Black and Yellow” video is up against tourmate Big Sean’s “My Last,” Kreayshawn’s “Gucci Gucci,” Tyler, the Creator’s “Yonkers” and indie-pop band Foster the People’s “Pumped Up Kicks.” “I think it’s really good competition, and it’s just a good sign of the new wave of how an artist can come up and get recognition these days,” Khalifa told MTV News in July when he first learned of the nomination. “Big Sean, I know his situation, how he came from nothing. Kreayshawn, she built her buzz similar with the Internet, and Tyler as well. These are all people who have their own movements.” Aside from his nomination, Wiz is just looking forward to some memorable moments at the VMAs. “I expect some real big performances, I expect some shockers, man. Some big things, people usually pull out all the stops at the VMAs,” he said. “That’s a big deal so I expect some entertainment.” Voting for the Best New Artist continues through the show, which airs live on Sunday (August 28) at 9 p.m. ET. Adele, Katy Perry Will Win Big At VMAs, Experts Predict

Both could end up with multiple Moonmen on Sunday, according to music journalists. By Gil Kaufman Adele and Katy Perry Photo: Columbia/ Capitol You can always count on outrageous entrances, pimped out red (or white, or black) carpets and plenty of over-the-top performances at the VMAs . But until that envelope is cracked open and the name is called, nobody really knows who is going to take home those Moonmen during the broadcast. (And no, just because we work at MTV doesn’t mean we’re in on the winners’ list.) As the anticipation builds for Sunday night, we asked a couple of professional pop-culture junkies to help us predict the VMA class of 2011 using a complicated system of … oh, let’s face it, they were guessing just like the rest of us. (For a more mathematical approach, find out what Vegas oddsmakers predict for the VMAs .) Video of the Year Adele, “Rolling in the Deep” Beastie Boys, “Make Some Noise” Bruno Mars, “Grenade” Katy Perry, “Firework” Tyler, the Creator, “Yonkers” Ian Drew, Senior Music Editor, Us Weekly : “Adele will win. I think it was her year, and this will cement that she is the new face of the music industry.” Kyle Anderson, Staff Writer, Entertainment Weekly : “This seems like a really tough one. Adele has a lot of nominations, but I don’t ever feel like there was any excitement for that video. … I would think this would go to Katy, though it’s not her most iconic video. It’s her message video, and it’s a clip that people talked about, and it has a lot of fireworks in it. Who could say no to that?” Best New Artist Big Sean (featuring Chris Brown), “My Last” Foster the People, “Pumped Up Kicks” Kreayshawn, “Gucci Gucci” Tyler, the Creator, “Yonkers” Wiz Khalifa, “Black and Yellow” Drew : “I think it’s Foster the People’s breakout year. This is a way to honor this band that is bubbling up and taking over. They’re kind of this year’s Kings of Leon, because everyone is talking about them.” Anderson : “It’s kind of weird that Foster the People are in there, but they seem to be peaking now, and they’ve had a slow burn. But this seems to be where they give Tyler the Moonman, even though I think the buzz around Odd Future has cooled off. … Of all these videos, when Tyler’s premiered everyone talked about it and he seems self-promotional enough and enough of a lightning rod [to make for good TV]. Plus, it’s hard to get that image of him playing with the cockroach out of my head.” Best Pop Video Adele, “Rolling in the Deep” Britney Spears, “Till the World Ends” Bruno Mars, “Grenade” Katy Perry, “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” Pitbull (featuring Ne-Yo, Afrojack and Nayer), “Give Me Everything” Drew : “I’ll give this one to Katy, because I think Adele will take Video of the Year, and they’ll want to give Katy something big and honor her for a slew of amazing videos. This one is the best; it’s so poppy and high-concept. Katy’s videos are a throwback to the great art of video making, while Adele’s is very simple.” Anderson : “There’s a lot of heavy hitters and, again, I would like to hand something shiny to Adele, but I don’t think of ‘Rolling’ as a pop song in the way the rest of them are. I’m a real sucker for Katy Perry, and I think the ‘Friday’ video is kind of awesome. It’s big and colorful, and she’s clearly into it and trying very hard. It’s a definitive statement of who she is and the year she’s had. Plus, any time you can get a Rebecca Black cameo in there …” Best Rock Video Cage the Elephant, “Shake Me Down” Foo Fighters, “Walk” Foster the People, “Pumped Up Kicks” Mumford & Sons, “The Cave” The Black Keys, “Howlin’ For You” Drew : “I have a feeling Foster will take Best New Artist, and this was the year of Mumford & Sons, so maybe this is the place to honor them. They had a high-concept video as well, but they could want to honor the veteran Foo Fighters because they did another one of their comedic, hilarious tongue-in-cheek videos.” Anderson : “I’m not a big Mumford fan, but I like that video because mopeds are funny. I think the win will go to the Foo Fighters, though. They’ve done parodies before, but it’s such a strange choice to pick ‘Falling Down’ as an inspiration, and in a weird way it works. It’s a movie about white-people problems, and there’s no better middle-age white-people problems band than the Foo Fighters. It’s the best song on that record, too, and it reminds of why that band is so great.” Best Video With a Message Eminem (featuring Rihanna), “Love the Way You Lie” Katy Perry, “Firework” Lady Gaga, “Born This Way” Pink, “F—– Perfect” Rise Against, “Make It Stop (September’s Children)” Taylor Swift, “Mean” Drew : “I think it’s clearly Lady Gaga. There hasn’t been that kind of example of a message song tied with a video in a long time, and the message is plastered across the video so strongly. Plus, they don’t want her to leave empty-handed, because when it comes to acceptance speeches, she gives a great, echoing message and it guarantees a great on-air moment.” Anderson : “My favorite video out of all of these is the Pink one. Even it goes through very well-trod material in music videos that appears in every Lifetime movie, it gets the point across in nice way. I know the song ‘Born This Way’ has a message, but I’m not sure that video has a message unless it’s about space travel. If I was a voter, I’d go for the Pink video, but of all of these, it seems like Katy’s works the best, if only because she’s never done anything like that before, whereas Eminem has a lot of videos about domestic violence. It’s such a departure for Katy, who grew up so sheltered and is just now engaging with these kinds of issues that it feels like it could be a thing that could help be a culmination of her crazy-ass year.” Best Hip-Hop Video Chris Brown (featuring Lil Wayne and Busta Rhymes), “Look at Me Now” Kanye West (featuring Rihanna and Kid Cudi), “All of the Lights” Lil Wayne (featuring Cory Gunz), “6 Foot, 7 Foot” Lupe Fiasco, “The Show Goes On” Nicki Minaj, “Super Bass” Anderson : “I really, really like that Wayne video if only because I’m very charmed by the idea that Lil Wayne would go see ‘Inception’ and say, ‘I gotta do that!’ It seems like exactly how his brain works, ‘I’ll slow-motion fall into water!’ But it seems like Nicki Minaj’s to lose. That song and video have been weirdly sticky.” Best Female Video Adele, “Rolling in the Deep” Beyonc

Britney Spears Is ‘Epitome Of Pop,’ Says Demi Lovato

Demi tells MTV News why she’s looking forward to Britney’s VMA tribute. By Jocelyn Vena Demi Lovato Photo: MTV News Britney Spears is set to get the tribute treatment this Sunday at the 2011 Video Music Awards . At 29, she may be younger than your typical awards show tribute subject, but looking back at Brit’s catalog of great videos and memorable VMA moments , we think she deserves it. As part of the new generation of pop stars following in Britney’s footsteps, Demi Lovato is pretty excited to see how the icon will be honored on Sunday night. “Who isn’t a Britney Spears fan?” Lovato asked, just days before the show goes live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles. “My favorite Britney Spears song is ‘I Wanna Go,’ ’cause it’s the latest song that she has and I love it.” Go behind the scenes as Britney films her 2011 VMA promo. Since Spears first took the VMA stage back in 1999, alongside ‘NSYNC, she’s managed to rack up five performances and take home four Moonmen, the first of which was back in 2008, over 11 years after her first appearance on the show. At this year’s show, she’s up for two awards for her video for “Till The World Ends,” Best Pop Video and Best Choreography. Demi has a simpler reason for a Britney tribute: ” ‘Cause she’s the ultimate pop star; nobody can touch her,” Lovato said. “She’s been around for such a long time now and she’s the epitome of pop. So when I think of pop music, I think of her.” While Demi is gushing about Brit’s long pop career, she’s poised to launch the next phase of her own. She will drop her album Unbroken next month. Its lead single, “Skyscraper,” rocketed to the top of the charts when it was released earlier this summer. What are you hoping to see in the Britney Spears tribute?
