Pitbull Brings Miami’s Most Beautiful To The VMAs

Miami MC says the dancers in his performance on Sunday night will ‘create Pandora’s box.’ By Rob Markman, with reporting by Jim Cantiello Pitbull rehearses for his 2011 VMA performance Photo: John Shearer/ WireImage Pitbull gets pretty demanding on his hit “Give Me Everything,” , but for his 2011 VMA performance, Mr. 305 looks to turn the tables and offer fans a taste of Miami. “I did get the most beautiful women from Miami to come over and create Pandora’s box,” Pit told MTV News. “So if you’re bringing your wife, your girlfriend, boyfriend to the show, you might lose ’em.” MTV News was present at Mr. Worldwide’s VMA rehearsal on Thursday at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, and the rapper comes through as promised. Pit and collaborators Ne-Yo and Nayer ran through their number, flanked by approximately 60 curvaceous female dancers. “We have some backup dancers: one or two or 60,” Ne-Yo teased . “And two of the best-dressed men in the business. What more can you ask for?” Lindsay Lohan’s lawsuit hasn’t dampened Pit’s party plans. The troubled actresses filed suit against the Cuban pop sensation, claiming that his lyrics on “Give Me Everything” were defamatory. But during the run-through, Mr. 305 didn’t bite his tongue as he freely rapped the line in question without censoring himself. “I got it locked like Lindsay Lohan,” Pit spit. On Thursday, Pit addressed the suit in a video on his Planet Pit website, inviting La Lohan to join him at the VMAs . “We’ll be performing [‘Give Me Everything”] at the VMAs and, as a matter of fact, I’d like to send out an invitation to Lindsay Lohan,” Pitbull said. “Hopefully she can come with me to the VMAs, and we can figure this out.” According to TMZ , however, the actress has declined. Still, Pit’s offer stands. “I said it, I meant it, and if she takes it, great. If she doesn’t, cool. But she will have her tickets at will call,” he told MTV News. In the meantime, the show goes on, and if the bilingual hit-maker’s practice run is any indication, Pit plans to leave everything he’s got on the stage, proving that it’s better to give than receive. Katy Perry: From VMA Rookie To VMA Royalty

This year’s top nominee has yet to win a Moonman, but she did nab a husband! By Jocelyn Vena Katy Perry at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards Photo: Steve Granitz/ FilmMagic At Sunday’s VMAs , one very kooky, colorful California Gurl is poised to rule the night: Katy Perry tops the nominees with a whopping nine nods for “E.T.,” “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.),” “Teenage Dream” and “Firework.” “It’s always exciting to be a part of the VMAs because there’s so much spontaneity,” she told MTV News. “I just remember growing up seeing craziness ensued with the VMAs. I wasn’t allowed to see it, but I done watched it!” While Perry has yet to win a Moonman, the show has played an important role in her career and personal life in other interesting ways. Let’s take a look back at Perry’s short-but-memorable history with the Video Music Awards and look forward to what she can expect Sunday night: 2008 Kinga Burza, the director of Perry’s “I Kissed a Girl” video , warned MTV News that the up-and-coming pop star would soon be a force to be reckoned with. “She’s fresh, original, intelligent and talented, with a star-like charisma, which will have boys and girls all around the world cooing for more,” Burza said. And she was right. Perry made her VMA debut that year, singing along with the night’s house band, Travis Barker and the late DJ AM . That night, “I Kissed a Girl” was up for Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Female Video and Best New Artist. She went home empty-handed, but the show was the first time (and certainly not the last) that she and host Russell Brand crossed paths. 2009 The VMAs returned to New York City, and Perry had become a household name. She was nominated for Best Female Video for “Hot n Cold” and opened the show with a rocking performance of Queen’s “We Will Rock You” alongside Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry. Although she didn’t take any prizes home, she did manage to nab Brand , who hosted the show for a second year. Perry said she saw a different side of the comedian during and after the show. “I really appreciate his sense of humor,” she explained. “It’s real dark, it’s real wrong and it’s really funny.” Explore our “Katy Perry: By The Numbers” infographic: 2010 Perry hit the white-hot VMA carpet in Los Angeles, and was by then one of the biggest pop stars in the world. Her relationship with Brand had escalated to an engagement, and her sweet and sassy “California Gurls” video , featuring Snoop Dogg, was nominated for Best Female Video and Best Pop Video. “I like the idea of this being like a board game,” she said of the video in 2009. “It’s kind of like Candy Land. That was probably one of my favorite games to play growing up. I like to bring back those pure childhood moments and give them a little bit of a naughty twist, of course.” 2011 Perry is coming up on her fourth VMA appearance, and this could finally be her year. She’s back in her home state of California, she’s tied the knot with Brand, and she’s broken all sorts of records with the songs from her Teenage Dream album , including becoming the first female artist with five #1 singles from the same album. Considering she’s up for hardware in categories like best Female Video (“Firework”), Video of the Year (“Firework”) and Best Collaboration (“E.T.”) featuring Kanye West, to name a few, her chances of bringing home a Moonman or two are looking good. Tyler, The Creator Recalls His First Performance, On ‘When I Was 17’

Odd Future’s Tyler, the Creator talks about his achievements on “When I Was 17.” By Kara Warner Tyler, The Creator Photo: MTV News This week’s new episode of “When I Was 17,” airing Saturday (August 27) at 11 a.m., is all about three outspoken rising stars in the hip-hop and rap communities who also happen to be VMA Best New Artist nominees. The most outspoken and unpredictable of the three is Odd Future standout Tyler, the Creator , who revealed that his 17th year featured two career-making moments, the release of his album and his first-ever “concert” performance. “When I was 17, I released The Odd Future Tape. That was my first album as a collective,” Tyler said, adding that the release led to the group’s first-ever performance. “My first performance was a talent show. I didn’t set us up for it, Hodgy did,” he recalled. “I was really excited because I’d never performed before.” Evidently, Tyler went all out during the show and at one point ended up dropping his pants for a not-so-receptive crowd. “I was jumping around, pulled my pants down. During parts of the songs, I would go in the crowd and just wild out and go crazy,” he said. “The guy who put it together, his mom and other family members were in the front. I didn’t know that they were heavy church people.” Unsurprisingly, the group’s performance did not receive an encore at that particular venue. “We were talking about 666 onstage and stuff,” Tyler said. “And then they just cut the music and were like, ‘Hey, get the f— out of here.” Tyler isn’t looking back with any regrets, of course. He’s got two huge VMA nominations to think about, Best New Artist and Video of the Year. “I’m really excited,” Tyler told MTV News of his Video of the Year nod. “Shout out to Ron Artest. If I lose to any of those wackass videos, I’m gonna be mad because they all suck — except for Adele’s.” The Cali rapper/ producer/ director was more willing to discuss his fellow Best New Artist nominees. “The Best New Artist thing, that’s cool,” he said. ” Wiz [Khalifa] is a really good dude and I’ve been a fan of his music, so if he wins I’ll be pretty excited. I wanna win that for sure, but Wiz is awesome, I’ve been listening to him since ’08,” he said. “Even Kreayshawn , she’s cool. So if she wins that too, I’ll be pretty stoked. But you know, I wanna win, I’m just gonna keep it 100.” “When I Was 17” — this week featuring VMA nominees Big Sean, Tyler, the Creator and Kreayshawn — airs Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV. The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8. Big Sean’s VMA-Nominated ‘My Last’ Almost Didn’t Happen

Video Music Awards Best New Artist nominee originally didn’t want to record the Chris Brown-assisted single. By Rob Markman Big Sean Photo: Joe Scarnici/ WireImage On his 2011 MTV Video Music Awards nomination for his single “My Last,” Big Sean told MTV News, “If I win Best New Artist, I’m gonna go crazy, because I really worked hard as hell.” The funny thing is that as big as the Chris Brown -assisted single was for him, Kanye West’s understudy originally bucked at the idea of recording the poppy single. “When No ID gave me that beat for the song ‘My Last,’ I did not want to do it at all ,” the Finally Famous MC revealed. Luckily for Sean, he was convinced otherwise. The song shot up the charts and peaked at #1 on the Billboard rap chart and #4 on the R&B/hip-hop chart. Ultimately, the single’s success helped the Detroit rapper land the #3 album in the country, finishing behind Beyonc

Pitbull: Lindsay Lohan’s VMA Tickets Are At Will Call

‘I’m actually surprised and, in an ironic way, kind of honored,’ Pit says of actress suing him over ‘Give Me Everything.’ By James Montgomery, with reporting by Jim Cantiello Pitbull Photo: MTV News Pitbull made headlines when he invited Lindsay Lohan — currently suing him over the lyrics to his hit “Give Me Everything” — to Sunday’s MTV Video Music Awards , where Pit will be performing the song with Ne-Yo and Nayer. “We’ll be performing at the VMAs, and as a matter of fact, I’d like to send out an invitation to Lindsay Lohan,” he said in a statement on his Planet Pit website . “Hopefully, she can come with me to the VMAs, and we can figure this out.” Of course, with the big show just around the corner, Lohan has yet to publicly RSVP, so when MTV News caught up with Pit during rehearsals for the VMAs, we had to ask if he’d heard from the actress. Lohan specifically took issue with the line “Got it locked up like Lindsay Lohan,” which Pit actually saw as a positive lyric. “As far as the whole Lindsay Lohan situation, it’s real simple: I’m actually surprised and, in an ironic way, kind of honored. The record, if you listen to it from beginning to end, [is a] very positive record. I start off even talking about my own life,” he said. “So in no way, shape or form am I here to defame, degrade or hurt anybody. It was my way of showing love or helping out, I would think. “But either [way], I said, ‘You know what? Performing it at the VMAs, [I] would like to invite her out,” he continued. “And anybody who knows my reputation [knows I] don’t do no publicity stunts. I’m not really about none of that. … So I said it, I meant it, and if she takes it, great. If she doesn’t, cool. But she will have her tickets at will call.” Pitbull didn’t stop there: If (or when) Lohan picks up her tickets, he hopes she’ll join him onstage for his performance of “Everything.” Maybe she could even rap the offending line. “That would be great, to be honest with you,” he laughed. “That might just throw Lindsay Lohan through the roof. People would love her if she did that! But then again, that’s just my two cents on her PR team and what they should be doing.” The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday from Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8. Lady Gaga’s VMA Fashion ‘Will Be Making A Statement’

2011 MTV Video Music Awards nominee says, ‘In the overarching scheme of pop culture, I hope to change what things mean.’ By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards Photo: Steve Granitz/WireImage.com For Lady Gaga , attending an awards show is not just about showing up and having a good time. For her, it’s also about making a statement. And, many times, that statement is tied to the many, many wardrobe changes she makes throughout the night. That, of course, includes the MTV Video Music Awards , where Gaga will be in attendance Sunday night. For her first VMAs , in 2009, Gaga made four costume changes, one of which included her seemingly bleeding onstage during her performance of “Paparazzi.” Then, in 2010, she might have had three costume changes, but her most memorable was her Franc Fernandez-designed meat dress. “When I came to VMAs that year, it was not perceived as performance, it was perceived as costume changes,” she recently dished to MTV News. “My seat is my seat. In the overarching scheme of pop culture, I hope to change what things mean and have them branch into other areas.” While no one knows what or how many outfits she will wear during Sunday night’s show, she did share what her bottom line is: “I will be making a statement.” That mirrors what she said during “MTV First: Lady Gaga” earlier this month, where she shared that her celebrity is a big art installation. “I think something that’s always been very important to me … is that the fame as an art form has always been an interesting stage,” she said. “It begins on the subway or in the car on the way here. It begins when I wake up in the morning and I take a shower. It’s not something that is temporal. It has no end, so I’m excited to continue as an artist to push the boundaries of where pop music can exist.” This year, Gaga is up for four Moonmen including Best Female Video and Best Video With a Message for “Born This Way,” as well as Best Art Direction and Best Choreography for “Judas.” Also, she will open the show with the night’s first performance. The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday from Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8. VMA Black Carpet: By The Numbers

Take a look at the nitty-gritty details of transforming a hotel lobby into an intergalactic fantasia. By Gil Kaufman Crew members assemble the 2011 VMA black carpet Photo: MTV News LOS ANGELES — It takes an army to build the massive set for the 2011 VMAs . And over the course of the last week, that tireless militia has been working around the clock to transform the lobby of the J.W. Marriott hotel in downtown Los Angeles into the intergalactic fantasia that will greet stars on Sunday night. The production has taken over just about every corner of the lobby, with lighting designers hanging a series of shimmering white curtains laced with more than 300 twinkly lights over a space that was previously a couch-filled lounging area. They’ve also laid down more than 12,000 square feet of black carpet throughout the lobby, covering the nearly 18,000 square feet of real estate the hotel has ceded to the production. Watch the black-carpet live stream to see the action as it unfolds! The first thing fans will see when they tune in to the VMA pre-show is the space-age “portal” celebs will be stepping through, a series of four undulating white shapes, the tallest of which is more than 16 feet high. That will eventually lead them to a 100 -foot long, glittering paparazzi plaza, where the night’s biggest names will face a sea of flashes. That space will be blazed by 1,700 silver-tipped incandescent bulbs that will light up the A-listers for their close-ups. VMA pre-show production designer Scott Storey promised that viewers at home would not see the same old “step-and-repeat” space they always get at the average awards show, and he wasn’t kidding. His vision of eight rib-cage-like towers that will “hug” the talent loom large, their wavy forms broken up by more than 40 pop-art-esque angular “pow” signs for this year’s awards show. The production crew also ensured that the whole thing would look fabulous by laying sheets of black plastic over more than 300 windows and doors on the front and back of the hotel. The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8. Chris Brown Will Do ‘Something He’s Never Done’ At VMAs

‘He’s pulling out all his tricks on this one,’ chorographers Rich and Tone say of Breezy’s Sunday-night performance. By Rob Markman Chris Brown at the 2007 VMAs Photo: Getty Images Chris Brown stole the show in Las Vegas with his table-hopping performance at the 2007 VMAs, and he’s been a tough act to follow ever since. But now he faces an even bigger challenge: topping himself. As they prepare Breezy’s moves for the 2011 VMAs , veteran chorographers Rich and Tone are confident he’ll pull it off on Sunday night. “You’re definitely gonna see Chris Brown; in a 1000 percent mode,” said Rich of CB’s plans. “Of course everybody knows he can sing, he has great music, and aside from that, you’re going to see that he’s an amazing dancer.” It’s still anyone’s guess which of song (or songs) the pragmatic dance machine will perform, but his latest album F.A.M.E. has produced a number of hits, including “Deuces,” the Michael Jackson-inspired “She Ain’t You” and his Best Collaboration-nominated single “Look at Me Now” with Lil Wayne and Busta Rhymes. Any one of those aforementioned tracks is an option, or he could do a medley that includes multiple chart-toppers. Rich and Tone, who choreographed this year’s routine as well Chris’ 2007 stage show, remained tight-lipped about what Breezy’s stage will look like, but the veteran dancers are impressed with what they’ve seen in rehearsals so far. “We’ve been working with Chris for many years; I’ve never seen him this way on this performance ever,” Tone teased. “He’s pulling out all his tricks on this one. He’s definitely gonna show you something fresh and new; something he has never done before.” But can Chris Brown top ’07’s display where he sang his single “Wall to Wall” while hoping table-to-table, incorporating the audience into his now classic routine? “It’s hard top yourself, but that’s the goal that we’re trying to hit,” Tone said. “So, yes, it’s a yes to that question, we are trying to top the 2007 performance.” The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8. ‘Hunger Games’ VMA First Look: An Exclusive Photo!

Before Jennifer Lawrence introduces exclusive glimpse at Sunday’s show, we offer up a sneak peek. By Kara Warner Jennifer Lawrence in “Hunger Games” Photo: Lions Gate All right, “Hunger Games” fans: There are only a few short days until we present the first-ever look at the upcoming film adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ best-selling dystopian novel. The exclusive glimpse of the film will debut during Sunday’s VMAs , to be introduced by star Jennifer Lawrence. It will also be available exclusively on MTV.com. In an effort to make your wait a little less painful — or more so, depending on how you feel about teaser photos — we are pleased to offer this exclusive still photo from the first look that will debut during the VMAs. The snapshot features heroine Katniss Everdeen (Lawrence) captured in a moment of extreme intensity, mid-sprint. Those who know how the plot unfolds in the books might venture to guess that Katniss is in the midst of a fight to the death in the Hunger Games. We hope we’ll see more of this when the footage debuts Sunday night. Until then, take a look back at the photos we’ve seen so far of Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth in action, as well as what Lawrence had to say about the coveted role when we spoke to her about it back in May. “I was a fan of the books before I really knew about the movies,” Lawrence told MTV News , adding that she’d be working her butt off to get into character. “It’s lots of training, but the training’s actually really fun. I’ve done archery for about six weeks and rock climbing, tree climbing — and combat, running and vaulting. But also yoga and things like that, to stay catlike!” The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8.
