Lady Gaga: Best New Artist VMA ‘Changed My Life’

‘I remember I asked Eminem to hold my Moonman,’ she tells MTV News. By Christina Garibaldi Lady Gaga accepts the Best New Artist award at the 2009 Video Music Awards Photo: Christopher Polk/ Getty Images The 2009 Video Music Awards belonged to Lady Gaga . She stunned us on the red carpet, wearing a Jean Paul Gaultier gown with Kermit the Frog on her arm, and shocked us onstage with her blood-soaked performance of “Paparazzi.” In 2010 , Gaga returned to the VMAs and made everyone’s jaws drop again when she hit the stage in her infamous meat dress . Yet, out of all of her iconic VMA moments, there is one that really stood out for Mother Monster: her win for Best New Artist. “I will always remember Best New Artist,” Gaga told MTV News. “I just remember that I won and I was surprised and I was really taken aback.” Eminem presented Gaga with the award that night, and she is still a bit embarrassed about asking him to hold her newly acquired award as she peeled off her face-covering red-lace crown to thank her Little Monsters face-to-face. “I remember I asked Eminem to hold my Moonman,” Gaga recalled. “And than he sort of looked at me like, ‘Are you f—ing kidding me?’ But he’s really cool, so it was fine.” We can’t say that we blame her for what she did, since she said there were a million different things running through her mind when they announced that she was the big winner. “It was a super surreal moment, where you have to think very quickly,” Gaga said of accepting her Moonman. “You can’t hear yourself, because they are screaming so loud, and you don’t have an in-ear [monitor] and you’ve got a microphone and you’ve got to get everything out, and I just remember I said, ‘To God and the gays,’ and I remember when I was done, I thought that was the right thing to say.” But we weren’t just transfixed by what Gaga was saying; we also couldn’t take our eyes off of what she was wearing. Gaga hit the stage in an Alexander McQueen dress, complete with a crown and her face covered with red lace. What the viewers didn’t know is that Gaga never planned to show her face during her acceptance speech. “I think I had been told and asked profusely by my label to take it off if I won,” Gaga said of removing the mask. “I was like, ‘I’m not breaking the fourth wall of this performance.’ I gave them this whole sassy answer. Then I got up there, I just got so overwhelmed, and I ripped it off, and I’ll never forget that moment. The first time that MTV recognized me, that changed my life.” The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday from Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8. Lady Gaga’s VMA Performance All About ‘Fearlessness’

Laurieann Gibson calls opening performance an opportunity to ‘create a new understanding of music.’ By Kelley L. Carter, with reporting by Christina Garibaldi Lady Gaga Photo: Getty Images So much for giving up the goods. We really tried to get Laurieann Gibson, Lady Gaga’s creative director , to spill her guts about what Mother Monster has planned for her VMA performance on Sunday, but she’s keeping things under wraps — in the best way possible. She jokingly said a few censored (and, considering how much she’s bleeped in the embedded video, obscene) things about what viewers will see. Long story short: She’s not telling. But Gibson did say of Gaga’s opening performance, “I hope that people take the fearlessness away. The notion that you don’t have to follow what is popular and that you can constantly take the opportunity and create a new understanding of music and performing. “It could mean standing under one spotlight,” she continued. “It could mean tons of camels and belly-dancing girls. I don’t know. One is not necessarily better than the other. But it is about the artist. It’s about ‘Who’s the artist?’ So in that one moment, you have to take it and give it all you can.” Gibson is just following suit on the secrecy front: When Gaga talked to MTV News last week, she said she wants to surprise her fans at the VMAs. “I’m really very honored and excited to open the show,” Lady Gaga told MTV News. “But I won’t reveal anything; I want it to be a surprise.” From what Gaga and Gibson revealed, the performance sounds like it will be avant garde, much like her 2009 VMA set, when Gaga took the stage for a blood-soaked “Paparazzi” performance . “It will be a continuation of everything I’ve been doing, and it will be exactly what they want,” Gaga said. “I’m pretty good at knowing what my fans want me to do.” The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8. Britney Cozies Up To Beyonce: VMA Seating Revealed!

Presenter Kim Kardashian has a VMA seat, but where’s hubby Kris Humphries? By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Jim Cantiello Kim Kardashian’s seat at the 2011 Video Music Awards Photo: John Shearer/ MTV It’s that time of year again, everyone. The seating cards are being placed inside the Nokia Theatre in sunny Los Angeles as producers work to put the finishing touches on Sunday’s 2011 Video Music Awards . So what types of match-ups have they thought up this year? MTV News’ Jim Cantiello investigated and found out some tasty tidbits. “Tony Bennett: This guy is a baller, and whoever is behind him is going to have the craziest contact high,” he teased of the 85-year-old crooner, who will pay tribute to the late Amy Winehouse at Sunday’s show. So who snagged that seat? Wiz Khalifa, naturally. Kim Kardashian will also be in the house as a presenter, but Jim wondered: “Where’s her husband at? Her husband doesn’t get a seat card. You thought when you marry Kim Kardashian you’d instantly get more famous. Dude, you’re still not famous enough to get your own card at the VMAs,” Jim warned the newlywed. His advice? “#DealWithIt.” “This is going to be a very rowdy section at the VMAs Sunday night,” Jim said as he made his way through the theater. “This is the land of Odd Future. Now, there are like 100 members of Odd Future. I’m only seeing three cards. So sorry, Hodgy, you’re not invited this year.” When Jim noticed there were some potato sacks lying around, he had a thought: “Here at the VMAs, we are prepared for anything in the audience, so if Lady Gaga wants to have a potato-sack race with Lil Wayne, we got them covered.” Of course, Justin Bieber and girlfriend Selena Gomez are seated next to each other. Jim, however, knows how to make it even more adorable. “The only thing that would make this cuter is if Maru the cat was trying to get in between them,” he suggested. Perhaps the section of the room fans will be most excited to see contains two of pop’s ruling divas. “I’m in section Queen B at the VMAs,” he said. So what does that mean? Beyonc

Britney Spears’ Iconic VMA History: Snakes, Stripteases And Smooches

We take a look back at pop princess’ decade-plus track record before Sunday’s tribute to the icon. By Jocelyn Vena Britney Spears and Madonna kiss at the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards Photo: Chris Polk/ FilmMagic It’s hard to believe there was ever a Video Music Awards without Britney Spears . Her iconic performances and eye-popping getups make her a perfect match for the outsized and outrageous VMA stage. Britney herself told us that her bombshell kiss with Madonna in 2003 is her favorite VMA moment. “My greatest experience — probably being with Madonna,” she told MTV News. “The kiss was amazing. … Being onstage with someone of that caliber is just iconic.” See Britney’s biggest VMA moments for yourself in these photos. But Spears certainly has a long list to choose from. And with that track record, it’s no surprise that this year’s VMAs will pay tribute to Britney . Let’s dive into the highlights of her decade-plus history with the show: 1999 For her first-ever appearance, Spears not only went dress shopping with MTV News correspondent Serena Altschul, but also declared herself a VMA pop princess, taking the stage alongside ‘NSYNC to perform her breakout hit ” … Baby One More Time.” Still the epitome of a teen-pop sensation, Spears performed with a school backdrop, a callback to her video for the track. Go behind the scenes as Britney films her 2011 VMA promo. 2000 Spears upped the sexy ante when she literally did a striptease at the show. She cooed her way through the Rolling Stones’ “Satisfaction” and then — boom — it happened: She ripped off her tux to display a nude two-piece getup and shimmied her way through “Oops … I Did It Again.” 2001 Just one year later, not only did the singer give Jamie Foxx a dance lesson to Chuck Berry’s “You Never Can Tell,” but she also hung out with Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger on the red carpet, who appeared not to know who she was. “Am I a Britney fan?” Jagger pondered. “Of course I am. And she did one of our songs, didn’t she? She did it very well.” But that was all kid’s stuff until Spears took the stage at the Metropolitan Opera House in 2001 for her sultry and very memorable performance of “I’m a Slave 4 U.” Draping herself in a white python and slithering around a steamy garden setting — surrounded by dancers in zebra and tiger outfits — Spears created one of the most striking visuals in the 27-year history of the show. 2002 Brit donned a dominatrix outfit and presented idol Michael Jackson with a birthday cake and referred to him as the “artist of the millennium.” Michael may have misunderstood and thought that she meant he was receiving some new Artist of the Millennium award and gave an acceptance speech. 2003 Here it is: Britney’s favorite. She, along with queen Madonna and peer Christina Aguilera, opened the show with striking dance moves and star power. But things really heated up during a wedding-themed performance of Madge’s “Like a Virgin,” when Madonna leaned in for a quick smooch with Christina Aguilera and then an even-steamier kiss with Spears. Everyone was surprised by it — including Justin Timberlake. She later told CNN , “I didn’t know it was going to be that long and everything. … I’ve never kissed a woman before.” What’s better than Britney, Madonna and Christina kissing? Cats re-enacting the smooch! Apparently, the three-way kiss struck a major chord with music fans around the world, who just voted it the most outrageous moment in the show’s long history. 2006 Spears appeared on the show in a way fans had never seen her before: pregnant. The mommy-to-be (Jayden James was on the way) pre-taped a segment alongside then-hubby Kevin Federline to present the award for Best R&B Video. 2008 Spears finally took home her first Moonman — actually, she took home three, for Video of the Year, Best Female Video and Best Pop Video, all for “Piece of Me.” She also displayed her funny bone in a video that opened the show, making us all laugh alongside Jonah Hill. “I just want to dedicate this to all my amazing fans out there for all their support,” she said when she took the stage to accept one of her many Moonmen that night. 2009 The show landed back in New York City, and Spears was up for seven awards. She took home the prize for Best Pop Video for her Joseph Khan-directed clip for “Womanizer.” 2011 After taking a break in 2010, we come to this Sunday, where a Spears tribute is set to take place and the singer is up for two Moonmen , including Best Pop Video and Best Choreography. Will she add any more hardware to her collection? You’ll have to wait and find out. But we are betting on one more memorable moment to add to her stellar VMA history. The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday from Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8. Lil Wayne Tour Evolves With ‘So Much’ New Music

‘He’s releasing song after song after song,’ musical director Gil Smith tells MTV News of evolving I Am Still Music Tour. By Rob Markman Lil Wayne Photo: Kevin Winter/Getty Images Lil Wayne is constantly evolving. From a 12-year-old kiddie MC, to the self-proclaimed “best rapper alive” to rock star and now R&B singer, Weezy has kept things interesting during the course of his 14-year career. His I Am Still Music Tour has been just as prolific, thanks to the mass amount of music he’s been releasing. And with his ninth solo album, Tha Carter IV, dropping at midnight after Sunday’s VMAs — where Wayne will also perform — concertgoers can expect some changes to the set list. “I think just in terms of the tour, we’ve been adding songs here and there,” Wayne’s musical director Gil Smith told MTV News. “You gotta understand with Wayne, there is so much music. I mean, we can talk about Tha Carter IV, and then we can sit down and have a different conversation about Sorry 4 the Wait, which was a whole different thing that he put out. So it’s so much music. Even when we’re on the road, he’s releasing song after song after song, so we got to kind of find ways to incorporate that as we go along.” When he and his Young Money compadres opened the tour in May in Providence Rhode Island, Wayne hadn’t yet released his fan-dedicated tape Sorry 4 the Wait, and Tha Carter IV was in release-date limbo. During the course of the concert run, which was extended through September, Wayne released the mixtape and a number of C4 singles. Smith said that by the time the tour wraps, the first show will be much different from the last. It’s not just the music, either. “It’s changed quite a bit. Now he’s skating around the stage, he has a skateboard trainer who’s out there with him,” Smith said. “He’s really into skateboarding, and he’s also into singing for the ladies. There’s a section of the tour that’s dedicated to that, and that’s how we kind of incorporated ‘How to Love,’ along with some other favorites.” Wayne will grace the stage this Sunday at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards, and while Smith wouldn’t reveal what the YMCMB star has planned , he said fans can expect a Weezy they’ve never seen. “We’ve been brainstorming and taking from things that we put together on the road, so I think they can just expect a new-and-improved Wayne, a different Wayne,” he said. “You know, he always comes different: One day he’s a rock star, one day he’s a skater; he’s singing R&B. I think we can expect a little bit of everything in this performance.” The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday from Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8. Pitbull Invites Lindsay Lohan To The VMAs

As Lohan sues him over the lyrics to ‘Give Me Everything,’ the rapper extends an olive branch. By James Montgomery Pitbull Photo: Michael Loccisano/Getty Images Pitbull and Lindsay Lohan may currently be at odds over the lyrics of “Give Me Everything,” but the rapper has extended an olive branch to the oft-troubled actress … in the form of an invitation to this Sunday’s . That’s what Mr. 305 said in a statement posted Thursday (August 25) on his Planet Pit website , in which he addressed the lawsuit Lohan filed last week that alleges the lyrics of his hit — in particular, the line “I got it locked up like Lindsay Lohan” — are “destined to do irreparable harm” to the actress’ career. Pit want it known that he hopes the two sides can hash out their differences at the VMAs. “We’ll be performing [‘Give Me Everything] at the VMAs , and, as a matter of fact, I’d like to send out an invitation to Lindsay Lohan,” Pitbull said. “Hopefully she can come with me to the VMAs, and we can figure this out.” Pitbull also said he was “very surprised” when he first learned of the lawsuit, especially since he considers “Give Me Everything” — and his mention of Lohan — to be positive. “It was very ironic, to be honest with you. At first I read it and I was like, ‘Nah, this has got to be a joke,’ [but] come to find out it’s very realistic,” he said. “Me being someone who supports Lindsay Lohan’s career, where I’ve seen her go through everything she’s gone through, and everything that has to do with this record is so positive — you see the way I start off the record, where I say, ‘I took my life from negative to positive/ I just want y’all to know that’ — when I mention Lindsay Lohan in the record, it was really a positive message. “[The lyric] is ‘Hustlers move in silence, so I’m tip-toeing/ So keep blowing, got it locked up like Lindsay Lohan,’ ” Pitbull continued. “When I say I got it locked up, if you’re from the neighborhood, when they say, ‘You got it locked up’ that means you run that area.” And as far as Lohan’s claims that the song has caused her — and her career — irreparable harm, Pitbull said that he never intended to hurt anybody … quite the opposite, in fact. “In no way, shape or form would I want to bring that on anybody. I didn’t look to defame, degrade or hurt someone’s career,” he said. “For me, mentioning it on a number one record around the world, I thought it would be helping someone’s career, and keeping them relevant. We mention people’s names all the time; when it comes to rapping, it’s always about double meanings and metaphors and how you flip certain things.” Pitbull added that he’s not sure what the next step in the legal process would be (“That has to come with the attorneys,” he said). But who knows? Perhaps things will be patched up after Sunday’s VMAs. “It shows that success comes with a whole lot,” Pit said. “And I always say, as hard as you work to succeed in this music business, there’s four or five people working harder to take it all away from you.” The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8. Eminem, Nirvana Pave Way For 2011 VMA Best New Artist

Big Sean, Foster the People, Kreayshawn, Tyler, the Creator or Wiz Khalifa will follow in their footsteps come Sunday. By Gil Kaufman Eminem accepts the award for Best New Artist at the 1999 VMAs Photo: Frank Micelotta/ ImageDirect We’re all rookies at some point, but when it comes to the MTV Video Music Awards ‘ Best New Artist category, you only get one shot at being the new kid on the block. And for this year’s nominees — Big Sean , Foster the People , , Tyler, the Creator and Wiz Khalifa — now is their time to shine and join an illustrious list of previous winners that includes Lady Gaga, Guns N’ Roses, Justin Bieber and 50 Cent. Since the very first Moonman was handed out in this category in 1984, MTV has a pretty stellar track record for picking artists who either went on to superstardom or at least represent a very specific moment in time (we’re looking at you, Jesus Jones). While hip-hop heavy, this year’s nominees span a pretty wide range of styles, from Kreayshawn’s gritty, viral sensation “Gucci Gucci” to Khalifa’s day-in-the-life “Black and Yellow,” Tyler’s bugged-out, arty “Yonkers,” Big Sean’s penthouse-rockin’ “My Last” and the DIY feel of the lone rock entry, Foster the People’s “Pumped Up Kicks.” Who’s gonna win? Well, you’ll have to tune in Sunday to find out, but chances are whoever takes home the prize will be a name you’ll be hearing for a good, long time. The very first BNA Moonman went to the Eurythmics in 1984, notable not just because of that British synth soul duo’s long, hit-filled career, but because they beat out a singer that went on to quite a career herself: Madonna. Over the years, such beloved bands as Crowded House (1987), GN’R (1988), Nirvana (1992), Eminem (1999), Alicia Keys (2001), 50 (2003) and Gaga (2009) have taken the prize. “I will always remember Best New Artist,” Lady Gaga told MTV News recently, recalling how she surprised Eminem by asking him to hold her Moonman as she thanked “God and the gays” and took off her red lace mask. “The first time that MTV recognized me, that changed my life.” Of course, there have also been some winners whose video work represented their artistic and commercial high point, such as ‘Til Tuesday (1985), A-ha (1986), Michael Penn (1990), the aforementioned Jesus Jones (1991), Fiona Apple (1997) and Macy Gray (2000). Even more surprising are the commercial heights reached by a number of nominated acts who didn’t win the award but went on to some pretty stellar careers regardless, including Whitney Houston (1986), Lenny Kravitz (1990), Beck and Green Day (1994), Kid Rock (1999), Christina Aguilera and Pink (2000), Coldplay (2001), Katy Perry (2008) and Nicki Minaj (2010). And, of course, there are the nominees who make you think: Really? Sure, Timbuk3’s “The Future’s So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades” was fun, but Best New Artist? The same might be said for others whose careers never quite reached their initial peaks, from Neneh Cherry (1989) to Jane Child (1990), Gerardo (1991), Chumbawamba (1998), Orgy (1999), the Darkness (2004) and James Blunt (2006). Viewers can vote for Best New Artist by visiting VMA.MTV.com online or m.mtv.com on their mobile phone. In addition, Best New Artist text voting is open to all wireless carrier subscribers by texting BNA to 66333. Voting continues through the show, live on Sunday. VMA Nominee Big Sean Gets Carjacked On ‘When I Was 17’

‘Within that 20 to 30 seconds, somebody hopped in my car and drove off,’ Best New Artist nominee reveals. By Kara Warner Big Sean Photo: MTV News Rising star and Best New Artist VMA nominee Big Sean might be riding high these days, but in the new episode of “When I Was 17,” airing Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV, the G.O.O.D. Music MC reveals a not-so-starry moment from his teens. “When I was 17, I got a brand-new 2005 Chevy Impala. I was one of the only people with a new car so I was definitely enjoying it, having fun,” Sean recalled. “One day outside my house, you know sometimes when you’re blocked in, you have to move cars out the driveway and move them back in? I was just trying to hurry up and do it, so I left my car running, hopped out my and car hopped into another car to pull it into the driveway,” he explained. “Within that 20 to 30 seconds, somebody hopped in my car and drove off. I’m like ‘Mom! Mom! Mom! Somebody stole my car!’ I was thinking, ‘Damn, I f—-d up.’ ” The Detroit native said that he and his mother called the police, but due to the number of carjackings in the area, their request wasn’t considered a high priority. “I had a tracking device on my car,” Sean said. “And we still couldn’t find my car.” One 2005 Chevy Impala aside, the “Finally Famous” lyricist hasn’t experienced the loss of any other prized possessions. For now he is focused on his music, and his first-ever VMA nomination. “Man, I was hype as hell,” Sean told MTV News upon learning of his nomination for Best New Artist . “I called my mom at like midnight. I was in Charlotte [North Carolina] the night when I found out, and I called my mom and I woke her up,” he revealed. “I’m excited. Hopefully, it’s gonna be a good night.” “When I Was 17” — this week featuring VMA nominees Big Sean, Tyler, the Creator, and Kreayshawn — airs Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV.
