Zooey Deschanel Files For Divorce From Ben Gibbard

‘New Girl’ star and Death Cab for Cutie frontman announced their separation in November. By Kara Warner Ben Gibbard and Zooey Deschanel Photo: Getty Images It looks like there is no reconciliation in sight for Zooey Deschanel and Death Cab for Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard. After announcing their separation back in November, the “New Girl” star officially filed for divorce a month later. According to People magazine, Deschanel filed the documents with L.A. County Superior Court on December 27. The papers list their actual date of separation as October 31 and cite “irreconcilable differences” as the reason behind the split. Although Deschanel spoke with the magazine recently, she didn’t have much to say about the end of her relationship with Gibbard but did mention that they will likely remain friends. “We’re friendly,” she told People. “It’s all fine.” Check out a breakup playlist of Death Cab and She & Him songs. Deschanel’s statement reflects a similar sentiment that a source told Us Weekly at the time of their separation: “It was mutual and amicable. There was no third party involved.” Deschanel’s star power has been on the rise over the past few years, particularly after her scene-stealing turn in “(500) Days of Summer” and “Our Idiot Brother,” but more recently since the debut of her critically acclaimed and Golden Globe-nominated new sitcom “The New Girl.” Gibbard has been equally busy with Death Cab for Cutie promoting the release of their seventh studio album, Codes and Keys, which was recently nominated for a Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album. The couple were introduced by their mutual manager three years ago. They got engaged in 2008 and were married in 2009. They have no children. Taylor Swift In ‘Les Miserables’: Fans Weigh In

‘I hope she can pull it off,’ one fan tells MTV News. By Tami Katzoff Taylor Swift imagined in the role of Eponine in the Broadway version of “Les Miserables” Photo: Broadway/ MTV News Taylor Swift has reportedly been offered the role of Eponine in Tom Hooper’s new “Les Miserables” movie, beating out more established actors including Lea Michele, Scarlett Johansson and Evan Rachel Wood. Opinion on the street (Broadway, of course) is mixed. Pennsylvanian Molly Washok, 17, is very pleased with the prospect of seeing Swift as Eponine on the big screen. “I seriously love ‘Les Miz.’ It’s a great Broadway musical,” she said. “And I’ve seen Taylor Swift in shows and I love her so much. I’m a big fan of both, so it makes me excited.” Long Islander Katie Kendrick, 20, is also a fan of Ms. Swift but not as certain of her chops. “I love Taylor Swift — I bought her CDs, I have everything. But I’m not sure she’ll be able to hit those notes that Eponine hits in her songs,” Kendrick said. If she’s cast in “Les Miserables,” Swift will join a group of A-list actors that includes Hugh Jackman, Helena Bonham Carter, Russell Crowe and Anne Hathaway. (Amanda Seyfried has reportedly been offered the role of Cosette.) Among these veterans, Kendrick noted, Swift would stand out as the novice. “Taylor Swift has only been in one movie and it was ‘Valentine’s Day,’ where she had a role for 10 minutes, tops. And all these other actors have been in numerous roles. They’re very well known in the acting industry while Taylor Swift is known in the singing industry,” she said. “I wish her luck, but I’m not sure she’ll be able to live up to the expectations that have been set previously.” Keely Kwok, 21, from Hamilton, Ontario, is willing to give Swift the benefit of the doubt. “She does have an incredible voice, I’ll give her that,” Kwok said. “It’s a really great musical, so I hope she can pull it off.” Twenty-one-year-old New Yorker Julia Menn was less diplomatic in her assessment of Swift’s credentials. “There are so many better people to play that part,” Menn said. “I’d prefer Evan Rachel Wood, actually. I think she’d be fantastic.” So would Menn see a Wood-less “Les Miserables” when it hits theaters this December? “Well, since Hugh Jackman’s in it, yes, I would.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . T.I. Balancing ‘Daddy’ And Rapper Personas

‘You ain’t gonna hear that music on that mixtape or this album,’ Tip tells MTV News of his family-man side. By Rob Markman T.I. Photo: MTV News There are two sides to T.I. , and ever since his 2003 breakout track “T.I. vs. T.I.P.,” the Atlanta rap star has been exploring this duality. With the premiere of his new VH1 reality series “T.I. & Tiny: The Family Hustle,” T.I. is showing yet another side — the family man. So how does he balance it all? “That’s when I go home,” T.I. told MTV News of his role as a husband and father. “You ain’t gonna hear that music on that mixtape or this album.” On New Year’s Day, T.I. dropped his F–k da City Up mixtape , and next up is his eighth solo album, Trouble Man. Tip, who has never shied away from putting his street persona on display, makes it clear that there is a distinct line between “T.I. the rapper” and “T.I. the father figure.” What fans see on T.V. isn’t necessarily what they’ll get when they listen to his new records. “When I go home, that’s who I am, what you see on the show. Now, what you’re gonna hear through them records is when I hit the streets, when I’m out movin’ and groovin’ — this is the person that must maintain this personality because it’s a cold world out here,” he said. “At home, I could be Mr. Harris or Daddy or what not, but when I’m out here in these streets it’s gonna have to be Tip because that’s what it takes it make it out here.” What do you think of T.I.’s persona on “T.I. & Tiny: The Family Hustle”? Justin Timberlake ‘Seriously’ Considering Elton John Role

Elton John calls JT ‘#1 on my wish list’ to portray him in upcoming biopic. By James Montgomery Justin Timberlake We may not be 100 percent sure of his current relationship status , but we can confirm that Justin Timberlake is getting very serious with Elton John. We think. In response to John’s claims that Timberlake is “#1 on my wish list” to portray the singer in an upcoming biopic — he told the Los Angeles Times that JT’s portrayal of him in the David LaChapelle-directed “This Train Don’t Stop There Anymore” video was “superb” — Timberlake is apparently “seriously” weighing the role, according to E! Online . “Justin is taking it very seriously,” a source “close to the singer” told E!’s Ted Casablanca. “He’s working with his people to figure out exactly how to respond.” Casablanca also writes that “a very official response will be coming from Camp Timberlake momentarily,” though, at press time, that response had yet to materialize. In his Times interview, John said the film version of his life is “very much in the works,” with a script penned by Lee Hall (“Billy Elliot”) and an unnamed director “onboard.” He also said that the biopic would be far different from the average Hollywood fare, which, given John’s larger-than-life existence, shouldn’t really be all that shocking. “It’s going to be a surreal look at my life, and not just a factual look at my life, more in the manner of a ‘Moulin Rouge!’ ” John said. “I just don’t want it to be a normal biopic because my life hasn’t been like that. And it only goes up to when I go into rehab in 1990. It starts with me going into rehab and ends when I come out.” Do you think Justin should play Elton John in a biopic? Fabolous Champions Meek Mill’s ‘Young Energy’

Don’t miss Fabolous, Maino and Skillz on ‘RapFix Live’ Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET on MTV.com. By Rob Markman Fabolous Photo: MTV News Fabolous has collaborated with a ton of MCs in his 10-plus years in the rap game. From Jay-Z and Lil Wayne to Rick Ross and Kanye West, Loso has spit with the best of them, but a feature with newcomer Meek Mill has the veteran Brooklyn lyricist especially excited. Fab, who will be a guest on Wednesday’s (January 4) “RapFix Live,” invited Meek Mill to jump on “You Don’t Know ‘Bout It,” a track off of his recently released There Is No Competition III mixtape . “I think Meek is, like, young energy, what hip-hop needs,” Fabolous told MTV News last month. “I always like to see new, young energy come into the game.” Meek hails from Philadelphia and has made his name as an artist on Rick Ross’ Maybach Music Group, but it isn’t just Mill’s skills on the mic that Fab admires. Loso also appreciates the “I’mma Boss” rapper’s ability to overcome the hardships he faced in the street. “It shows a person from the same walk of life you come from reaching something that they wanted to do against the odds of what could’ve happened,” Fabolous said of Meek’s past. “I know a little bit of his story where he went to jail and stuff like that, so it’s good to see him actually doing something that he’s pursuing and being successful at that. I like that as well, just even being able to collaborate with that.” Catch Fabolous, Maino and Skillz on “RapFix Live” Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET on MTV.com, and be sure to join the Twitter conversation using the hashtag #RapFixLive. Russell Brand: What’s Next After Katy Perry?

‘Rock of Ages’ and Diablo Cody’s directorial debut should keep the newly single funnyman busy. By Kara Warner Russell Brand in London on Tuesday Photo: Colin MacFarlane / Splash News Russell Brand’s career has never been short on surprises, but his biggest shock yet might have come last week, when he filed for divorce from his wife of one year, Katy Perry . So what does 2012 hold for the newly single actor/comedian? Brand has several projects lined up in his professional life that might help distract him from the recent rockiness in his personal life. The “Get Him to the Greek” and “Arthur” star has a plum role in the star-studded movie musical “Rock of Ages,” which opens June 1. The film — which is a love story told through the “arena rock” stylings of popular ’80s artists like Journey, Pat Benatar, Bon Jovi, Styx and REO Speedwagon — is based on the popular Broadway show. Brand plays the role of Lonny, the film’s narrator and co-club operator, for which he’ll act and sing with castmates Alec Baldwin, Tom Cruise, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Malin Akerman and Julianne Hough. After “Ages,” Brand will jump into writer Diablo Cody’s directorial debut , originally called “Lamb of God” but currently listed on IMDb as “Untitled Diablo Cody Project.” Brand is set to star alongside “Ages” co-star Hough in a story of a young conservative religious woman who decides to go to Vegas and “live the life of a sinner” but ends up rediscovering her faith along the way. Brand has also been suggested as a candidate for the role of Tommy Lee in the movie version of Neil Strauss’ M

Ron Paul Supporters Boost Kelly Clarkson’s Album Sales

Republican presidential hopeful even shouts out the singer in a speech leading up to the Iowa caucus. By James Montgomery Ron Paul Photo: Getty Images Even as he continues to battle for votes in the final hours of the Iowa caucus , Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul is already a front-runner in another contest: the quest for celebrity endorsements. Yes, in recent days, Paul has surged to the forefront of high-profile support, picking up the backing of singers Kelly Clarkson and Michelle Branch (both of whom subsequently felt the wrath of Paul’s detractors, though, hey, Clarkson may have gotten a sales bump out of it). But they’re just the latest in a list of seemingly disparate stars who have endorsed the candidate. “Fear Factor” host/ UFC fanatic Joe Rogan has already gone on the record as saying he supports Paul’s candidacy, as has comedian Doug Stanhope and actor Vince Vaughn, who introduced him at a political conference in Nevada back in September. Staind frontman Aaron Lewis is also onboard. In a speech Tuesday (January 3) at Valley High School in West Des Moines, Iowa — given to an audience of young voters — Paul even mentioned Clarkson by name, asking the assembled students, “Does anybody here know the name Kelly Clarkson? … Recently, she endorsed me. … I had to admit, I didn’t know a whole lot about her, but I did know that our supporters were so enthusiastic about it they went out and bumped up sales of her record by 600 percent.” MTV is on the scene in Iowa! Elton John Wants Justin Timberlake To Play Him In Biopic

‘It’s going to be a surreal look at my life,’ John tells the L.A. Times of movie in the works. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Timberlake Photo: Getty Images Elton John is currently working on a biopic based on his over-the-top life, and he even knows who he’d want to play him in the flick, should it all pan out. In an interview with the L.A. Times , the singer opened up about hoping to cast pop star-turned-actor Justin Timberlake. “We have a director on board, and then it’s just going to be a matter of getting the script exactly the way we want it. Lee Hall has written a script — he wrote ‘Billy Elliot’ — and then we’ll start trying to cast and plan,” he explained in the interview. “I’ve got a wish list of people. #1 on my wish list is Justin Timberlake,” John said, saying Timberlake’s portrayal of him in the 2001 music video for “This Train Don’t Stop Here Anymore” was “superb.” With some big decisions still up in the air, John does confirm that plans for the plot and story are a bit more solid. “That would be a jukebox musical in earnest, maybe with a couple of new songs,” he explained. “You never know. Because it’s going to be a surreal look at my life, and not just a factual look at my life, more in the manner of a ‘Moulin Rouge!’ I just don’t want it to be a normal biopic because my life hasn’t been like that. And it only goes up to when I go into rehab in 1990. It starts with me going into rehab and ends when I come out.” John admitted that he had attempted to get the director of “Moulin Rouge!” for his own film. “We tried to get Baz [Luhrmann], but Baz is so busy,” he said of the “Great Gatsby” director. “We can’t announce it yet, but we have got someone on board that we’re very excited about.” The movie would mean that fans would get to see Timberlake sing again. Since heading to Hollywood, the singer hasn’t done much of it, but has continued to rack up more and and even recently took a job at MySpace .
