Demi Lovato: Behind Her World Series National Anthem

We follow the singer as she returns to her hometown to sing the ‘Star-Spangled Banner’ and cheer the Texas Rangers to victory. By Matt Harper Demi Lovato sings the National Anthem prior to Game 5 of the 2011 World Series Photo: MLB/Getty Fifteen minutes before taking the field to sing the national anthem near her hometown of Dallas at Game 5 of the World Series, Demi Lovato admitted to MTV News just how nervous she was. “I feel like I’m about to jump out of a plane,” the young star confided nervously after warming up her vocals in a back room deep in the heart of Arlington, Texas’ Rangers Ballpark. “Although this is a lot safer.” MTV News got the opportunity to spend the day with Demi as she prepped for the big moment. Minutes before stepping out in front of 51,000 people, she was cracking jokes, but it was plain to see that she was nervous — extremely excited, but definitely nervous. Just seventeen minutes later, and Demi’s smile said everything you needed to know about how her performance went. Standing on the field watching the 19-year-old belt out the notoriously difficult song, it was hard not to get swept up in the emotion of it all. Even before the end of the anthem, hitting a particularly difficult note in stride, the crowd erupted in premature cheering. As fireworks erupted and the crowd stood cheering, Demi left the field smiling. As we walked through the back hallways of the stadium, we were stopped every few feet by fans, athletes and MLB officials telling Demi how amazing she had done. After posing for photos with a few fans, Demi was approached by Dodgers center fielder Matt Kemp, who had also just left the field after being given the 2011 Hank Aaron Award as the most outstanding offensive player in the National League. Kemp took a moment to congratulate Demi and ask for a picture with her. Finally back in the green room, Demi was able to stop and think back on the whirlwind 20 minutes. Her family and friends were all there to support her, and they gushed about seeing the performance on TV and how clearly moved the players and fans were. In the company of her support circle, Demi was able to relax and laugh and let the nervous energy of the day roll away. All that was left was to sit back and spend time with the people that she cared about the most — and cheer on the Rangers, of course. We all traveled to our seats to watch the World Series game, and Demi sat in-between her aunt and one of her childhood friends, with other relatives and close friends flanking her on either side. For the next few hours, Demi got to watch the exciting game like the rest of the 50,999 fans in the stadium, eating popcorn and standing up to cheer as the Texas Rangers’ Mike Napoli got the final out of the game to seal Texas’ 4-2 win over the St-Louis Cardinals. A perfect end to a long and exciting day for Demi Lovato. How did Demi do on the anthem? Let us know in the comments! Related Videos MTV News Extended Play: Demi Lovato Related Artists Demi Lovato

Black Keys’ ‘Lonely Boy’ Video: Dancing Fool

Oddly compelling clip gives us the first listen to their new single and showcases some seriously funky dance moves. By James Montgomery The Black Keys’ “Lonely Boy” music video Photo: Warner Music Group Perhaps not content to let Coldplay’s Chris Martin soak up all the glory for the unicycle skills he showcases in his band’s new “Paradise” video, on Wednesday (October 26), the Black Keys unveiled their own delightfully odd video , for “Lonely Boy.” And let’s just say: It’s your move, Mr. Martin. The “Lonely” clip may or may not be the actual video for the first single from the Keys’ El Camino album (a spokesperson for their label, Nonesuch, did not respond to MTV News’ request for comment at press time, though the fact that it’s titled as a “first listen” leads us to believe there’s a proper clip to follow). While it features little more than one fabulously funky gentleman and his dazzling array of dance moves, it is truly amazing to behold. Basically, it validates the existence of the entire Internet. Mostly because, dang, can this dude dance. The Twist, the Carlton, even an MJ thrown in for good measure, he does it all, getting down in what appears to be the garage of a used car dealership (probably the same one Bob Odenkirk works at) while “Lonely Boy” blasts in the background. In fact, he even mouths most of the lyrics and acts a few of them out for us too. Much like the garage it is filmed in, this video is full-service. While, sure, it would be easy to write the “Lonely Boy” clip off as just another viral video, that would be selling it short. It is a deceptively brilliant, oddly compelling and cleverly handmade thing, the kind of vid that practically begs to be watched over and over again (and believe me, I’ve spent the entire afternoon doing just that). There’s not only an uninhibited joy to the man’s moves, it doesn’t hurt matters that the song is pretty fantastic too: a herky-jerky, down-and-dirty boogie powered by some raunchy guitar and a keening organ. If anything, it makes me excited to hear even more of El Camino, which is out December 6. No word on whether the gentleman in the “Lonely Boy” video will be involved in any future promotion, but I’ve got my fingers crossed. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to watch this thing again. And again. What do you think of the “Lonely Boy” video? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists The Black Keys

Florence And The Machine Get ‘Satanic’ In ‘Shake It Out’ Video

Florence Welch says they were going for ‘slightly ritualistic and sort of satanic undertones’ in the clip. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Rya Backer Florence Welch Photo: Andreaa Radulescu/MTV Florence Welch has seen better days. After a rather long night in New York City — where she was in town to perform at the Vice-sponsored Creator’s Project, as well as promote her upcoming album, Ceremonials — she’s a bit worse for wear. And honestly, she thinks the entire world might spin off its axis any minute now. “I’m so bad at dealing with hangovers. I feel like it’s the end of the world, ‘This is basically it for me, nothing is going to be good ever again,’ ” she sighed. “And the poor people around me are like, ‘Florence, it’s fine.’ And I’m, ‘It’s not fine, nothing will ever be fine!’ ” Then again, her current state is somewhat appropriate, given that she’s talking about the Ceremonials single “Shake It Out,” a rousing, revelatory song that also just so happens to have been written under similarly skull-splitting circumstances. “I think I came to the studio with a bit of a hangover, and it was one of those strange days where you’re not really sure where a song comes from,” she explained. “[Producer] Paul [Epwoth] just had these chords on the organ, and they sounded optimistic and sad at the same time. And I was thinking of regrets, like, you know when you feel like you’re stuck in yourself, you keep repeating certain patterns of behavior, and you kind of want to cut out that part of you and restart yourself. “So this song was kind of like, ‘Shake yourself out of it, things will be OK,’ ” she continued. “[Because] sometimes I have to write songs for myself, reminding me to let it go. But then, the end refrain of ‘What the hell’ is really important as well, because you’ll dance with the devil again at some point, and maybe it will be fun. I’ve heard he does a really good foxtrot.” And in keeping with that last point, Florence (and her Machine) made it a priority to get devilish with the “Shake It Out” video, which was shot in the grandiose Eltham Palace and was, by all accounts, a pretty excellent party — one that, like most of Ceremonials, seemed to span space and time. “We were kind of going for a sort of ‘Gatsby at West Egg’-style house party but with maybe slightly ritualistic and sort of satanic undertones and s

Amy Winehouse’s Death: Alcohol Expert Weighs In

‘This is not the first time we’re hearing about someone dying from an overdose of alcohol,’ Dr. Sam Zakhari tells MTV News. By Gil Kaufman Amy Winehouse Photo: John Shearer/ WireImage Amy Winehouse ‘s cause of death was a result of the same factors that kill anyone who overindulges: she, literally, drank herself to death . It was revealed Wednesday (October 26) that Winehouse had more than five times the legal driving limit of alcohol in her body at the time of her July 23 death , which coroner Suzanne Greenway said unintentionally led to “such potentially fatal levels” that it caused the “Rehab” singer’s demise. Dr. Sam Zakhari, director of the Division of Metabolism and Health Effects at the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, said what apparently befell Winehouse is not unlike what happens on college campuses every weekend. “This is not the first time we’re hearing about someone dying from an overdose of alcohol,” said Zakhari, who did not treat Winehouse and has no firsthand knowledge of her case, but who was speaking to MTV News as an expert on the public facts of the case. “You hear it quite frequently here in the U.S. about college students who drink themselves to death.” Zakhari said when an individual consumes too much alcohol too quickly, their blood alcohol level increases dramatically and it can rise rapidly to several times the legal limit for intoxication. “That inhibits what’s called the respiratory center, which is the area in the brain that controls [breathing]. When that is inhibited, people cannot breathe, period. That’s what causes their death.” Winehouse, 27, who famously struggled with drug and alcohol addiction during her short life and rapid rise to fame, was found in bed in her London apartment in July, and police said they discovered three bottles of vodka at the scene. The inquest found no sign of illegal drugs in her system, and a postmortem examination of her body found her vital organs in good health. The amount of alcohol in her system was enough to stop her breathing and possibly send her into a coma, according to officials. After initial autopsy results were inconclusive , the Grammy-winning singer’s father, Mitch Winehouse, said his daughter had been drug-free for some time, suggesting that it was alcohol withdrawal that had killed her. But one of the singer’s doctors said Winehouse had begun drinking again a few days before her death after a long period of abstinence. Asked if Winehouse’s history of substance abuse had any impact on the way she died, Zakhari said that her background would not necessarily play a part in such a death. “Experience with alcohol doesn’t preclude a person from having respiratory arrest,” he said. “There’s no difference. Tolerance works within certain limits, but that would mainly [have an impact] on behavior.” In other words, someone who has never been drunk will exhibit more visible signs of inebriation after consuming large amounts, versus a person with a history of drinking. But that tolerance is quickly negated as the level of alcohol consumed rises. “A high concentration [of alcohol] will make that part of the brain cease to function regardless of whether that person is a chronic drinker or not,” he said. Justin Bieber Enlists Kanye West, Drake For Next Album

He also reveals to Capital FM that the project will be called Believe and should be out ‘very soon.’ By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber Photo: MTV News Justin Bieber may be less than a week away from the release of his holiday album, Under the Mistletoe, but he’s already thinking about his next project. We know it will be heavily influenced by another Justin — Mr. Timberlake — and now we’re learning a bit more about it. In an interview with Capital FM , Bieber said he’s getting some high-profile folks to work on tracks for the album. “Very soon [it’ll be released], after my Christmas album,” JB revealed. “It’s going to be coming out. It is called Believe. I’m working with a lot of cool people. I’m working with Kanye [West]. Drake is going to work on the album with me.” It’s hardly the first time Bieber has been in the mix with Drake and Kanye. Bieber recently put his spin on Drake’s “Trust Issues,” and while Drake wishes JB had left the track uncensored , he had high praise for his fellow Canadian. “He’s like a talented kid … from Canada, so to hear him even remix that song is crazy,” he said. “That’s incredible.” Plus, let’s not forget that Kanye remixed Bieber’s track, “Runaway Love,” just last year. “He’s such a cool guy, and he’s just really laid-back and just nice, and at the end of the day, he’s just a nice person,” Bieber said at the time about the MC. Bieber’s manager, Scooter Braun, chatted with Billboard about the upcoming album, which he said will include tracks mostly written by Bieber himself. “He’s pretty adamant about writing a lot of [the album],” Braun said. “And he played me some stuff that he’s been doing on his own. He wrote this amazing song that sounds like a Jodeci record. I’m really excited for him. This kid can sing his ass off. He’s coming into his own.” When we spoke with Bieber earlier this year, he said he really wanted to be the main producer on the record. “[I’m] writing about how I feel and producing. I’ve been producing on my laptop and on my computer,” he said. “I’ve been really into it and, hopefully, this next album will be huge.” What are you expecting from Justin’s next album? Drake Bell Working On ‘Big Choruses’ For Next Album

‘It’s real poppy,’ singer/actor says of follow-up to his A Reminder EP. By Jocelyn Vena Drake Bell Photo: MTV News Drake Bell may have released his A Reminder EP just this year, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t already hard at work on his next album. The “Terrific” singer said that, while the logistics of when his album will drop are still up in the air, he definitely knows what he wants it to sound like. “I’ve been writing a lot of songs recently with some really great songwriters,” he told MTV News. “I love collaborating with other people. You just get the other ideas in the room, and the new music is sounding great. There’s not a specific record, but the catalog of the material of songs is getting really great.” When asked who his dream collaborator would be, he had two names on the brain: Dr. Luke and Max Martin, hitmakers for the likes of Katy Perry and Britney Spears, to just name a few. Given his description of this next project, it seems they would be the perfect guys to get in the studio with the actor/musician. “It’s real poppy,” he explained. “I’ve been writing with a lot of real interesting cats. A lot of the writing sessions I’m doing, we won’t pick up a guitar. It’s all about the big choruses but still coming from [a real place]. It’s not just party music. I’m excited to hear them all finished. They’re in various states right now.” In between recording sessions and acting projects, Bell kicks off a tour later this month, but his focus is still very much on this next album. “I’m looking forward to a nap,” he joked. “Let’s see, I’m really looking forward to going on tour and getting the band back together. … It’s gonna be fun. And getting this music recorded, finding some time to finish up this record.” What are you expecting from Drake’s album? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Drake Bell

Demi Lovato Promises ‘Better And Bigger’ Fall Tour

Unbroken singer tells MTV News that fans can expect Lady Gaga, Maroon 5 covers; hints at plans for 2012 world tour. By Christina Garibaldi Demi Lovato Photo: MTV News Demi Lovato has been hitting a lot of high notes lately. On Monday, the “Skyscraper” singer sang the national anthem at the World Series , she’ll be performing alongside Lady Gaga at Z100’s Jingle Ball concert in December and she’s gearing up to hit the road for 10 tour dates beginning next month. “[I’m] very excited,” Lovato told MTV News about heading out for the first time since leaving the Jonas Brothers’ tour to seek treatment for personal issues last November. The 19-year-old has already given fans a sneak peek at what can expect from her during two recent shows in New York and in Los Angeles. “We’re gonna do the same show, but a little bit different … better and bigger, and my fans just have to come check it out,” Lovato said of the dates beginning November 16 in Detroit. “We were just experimenting with the show and trying to see how it all played out and give my fans something that will bait them in for the tour.” Lovato will be performing songs off her Unbroken album, plus her fan favorite rendition of Lil Wayne’s “How to Love.” But Wayne won’t be the only artist she covers onstage. “I’m thinking of maybe a Maroon 5 or Lady Gaga cover,” Lovato revealed. “I like ‘Born this Way’ and ‘Moves Like Jagger,’ I’d want to perform one of those.” If Lovato isn’t heading to your hometown this time around, no need to worry, it looks like she’ll be back on the road sooner than expected. “I’m planning on a world tour next year,” Lovato told us. While it’s still unconfirmed when Lovato will kick off that world tour, she already has an opening act in mind. “You know who I did see the other day on the Internet was that little girl Sophia Grace,” Lovato said of the eight-year-old U.K. sensation who gained YouTube fame with her cover of Nicki Minaj’s “Super Bass.” “She’s so cute, maybe she can open up for me,” Demi said. Apart from singing skills, Grace and Lovato have at least one more thing in common: their love for Nicki Minaj. “I just love that she can rap and sing,” Lovato said of the Queens rapper. “You know, a lot of people can just rap and she can rap and sing and she has a really good voice. She’s fun; she doesn’t take herself too seriously. A lot of artists take themselves way too seriously. It’s hard to find artists that just want to have fun these days, and that’s what she does.” Does that mean Demi would want Minaj to hit the road with her? “She would be amazing. I would be opening up for her though,” Lovato laughed. Will you catch Demi on tour? Let us know in the comments! Kelly Clarkson Calls Stronger Her ‘Best Album’

‘I think after 10 years of doing it you feel a little stronger personally and musically,’ she tells MTV News of brand-new LP’s title. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Matt Elias Kelly Clarkson Photo: MTV News Kelly Clarkson ‘s Stronger, the follow-up to 2009’s All I Ever Wanted, is an album full of power pop that finds Kelly delivering an empowerment message with her signature sassiness. Released on Monday (October 24), Stronger is a mix of ballads and uptempo tracks. Lead single “Mr. Know It All” kicked off the release and sets the tone for the record, which includes production and songwriting credits from industry heavyweights like Toby Gad, Clarkson fave Claude Kelly, Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins and Brian Kennedy. “I worked really hard on it,” said Clarkson, who is now five albums into a nearly decade-long career. “And it’s my best album, I think, to date.” The singer had to deal with some issues, however, including some delays before the record finally got an official release date; many tracks even leaked onto the Internet. But Clarkson knows how to handle adversity, as her album title reflects. “There were a few different titles that were going around and I think the reason why we came up with Stronger was just because every song was about empowerment and almost like overcoming stuff,” she explained. “So, even if it was a bad situation and a sad song, it was about overcoming that. So by the end of the song, it’s kind of more inspiration than sad. So I think that’s why [we named it that], and I think after 10 years of doing it you feel a little stronger personally and musically. People know you better. It’s just easier, I think.” The album’s track list is full of song titles that include the word “you”: “What Doesn’t Kill You,” “I Forgive You,” “You Love Me.” So we asked Clarkson, exactly who did she have on her mind while recording the album. “I don’t know. I guess I was the opposite of a narcissist this time,” she laughed. “They’re all different ‘you’s.’ I didn’t have a bad breakup or anything,” she continued. “I just think life is about relationships so I always write all about these different ones going on in my life. And I don’t have a filter, so it’s pretty verbatim.” With her album finally out, Clarkson is looking forward to hitting the road. “Starting the tour in January, we’re doing that right now [and] we’re developing that right now.” Share your reviews of Stronger in the comments below!
