‘[Our songs] can be felt on so many different levels,’ Chester Bennington says of LP’s latest, in stores Tuesday. By James Montgomery Linkin Park Photo: When Linkin Park began the process of making LIVING THINGS, they weren’t sure where the journey would take them … after all, the last time they headed down this path — on 2010’s A Thousand Suns — their voyage ended up in decidedly dystopian territory: It was, for all intents and purposes, an album that sounded like a sonic apocalypse, and dealt with similarly dark themes. But to be honest, that didn’t dissuade them. Because, as they’ve discovered over their 15-year career, creative uncertainty is practically par for the course. It truly seems that Linkin Park don’t know what kind of album they’re making until it’s done. And even then, sometimes they’re still not sure. “When we’re writing a record, there’s a misconception [that] maybe [we’re] thinking of something, and planning a goal, trying to imagine a song and then making a song,” Mike Shinoda told MTV News during “MTV First: Linkin Park.” “That’s not how we work. We basically sit down with instruments and try to pull it down out of the air. You go into it without thinking, and then you see what comes out. And in the process of making the last record, a lot of what was popping out was about nuclear war, stuff like that. I think, having gotten that out of our system, this record, when we sat down to write songs, it was always personal, and it kept happening.” And while most of the advance press about LIVING THINGS (in stores Tuesday) seemed to focus on LP ditching the political for the personal, that may not actually be the case. Because Linkin Park keep coming back to the idea of uncertainty … to them, the songs on their new album are meant to be taken however their fans choose to take them. Sure, they may be drawing from the personal, but they’re meant for the masses. Pure and simple. And though they’ve changed plenty over the years, that aspect of their music remains steadfastly, immutably unaltered. “You can look at a song like ‘CASTLE OF GLASS,’ which for me, has one of the most interesting opposing points of view,” Chester Bennington said. “When Mike was talking about the lyrics, at one point he had said, ‘You know, it’s kind of like finding yourself as this broken part of this big machine, and feeling like you’re not part of that, or trying to find your place in the bigger scheme of things.’ And that can mean a solider coming home from war, and trying to fit back into society, or a person getting out of prison, or whatever. “And here I am, envisioning this big, beautiful glass castle on a hill, and, like, unicorns. I’m thinking like ‘Yeah, if you zoom in, I’m this little broken part of this castle that no one knows about, and I may seem like flawed and not important, but when you back up and look at the big picture, you’re part of this really beautiful thing that keeps you together,” he continued. “And it was a really interesting twist; I think a lot of our lyrics can be taken from multiple perspectives, depending on what you want the song to be about … they can be felt on so many different levels.” What do you think of Linkin Park’s new album? During O Music Awards, ‘Jackass’ star Chris Pontius, Neon Trees and Jackson Browne will join the Lips as they try to land Guinness spot. By Brendan Dempsey Wayne Coyne of Flaming Lips Photo: It’s no secret that the Flaming Lips have their sights set on the Guinness World Record for most concerts performed in multiple cities in a 24-hour time period. The innovative rockers have just announced they will be joined by “Jackass” and “Wildboyz” star Chris Pontius, Jackson Browne, Neon Trees, Karmin and a slew of additional artists as they gun for the record, currently held by Jay-Z, who played seven shows from Atlanta to L.A. in 2006. The Flaming Lips and friends plan to play eight shows from Memphis, Tennessee, to New Orleans, beginning Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. ET and continuing for 24 hours. The gigs will take place in conjunction with the O Music Awards, a 24-hour awards ceremony that will be broadcast on MTV, VH1 and CMT and livestream at Omusicawards.com. The Flaming Lips will jump aboard their aptly named bus, “Endeavor,” and travel to each new location just as the opening band is finishing its set. They’ll perform what promises to be a raucous and exciting mini-set before moving on to the next location. The O Music Awards ceremony will give out 24 awards, one for each hour of the festival. Categories that artists are vying to win include Must Follow Artist on Twitter, Best Online Concert Experience, Most Adorable Viral Star, Fan Army FTW, Best Music App and Digital Genius Award. “The O Music Awards are all about the celebrating the wonderfully messy and soulful spirit of music,” said Van Toffler, President of Viacom’s Music and Logo Group. “This insane bus brigade and the assorted collection of artists and pranksters that are taking part not only make me incredibly happy, but pretty much sum up what a good 24 hour binge should involve, minus the libations.” Along with the pomp and circumstance of winning awards, the first 12 installments of Stop/Watch will air during the concerts. Stop/Watch is a 60-second online music series in which artists have one minute flat to perform a complete song — with a countdown clock running! The first 12 Stop/Watch artists are: Joseph Arthur, Carolina Chocolate Drops, Citizen’s Band, John Forte, the Hives, Rhett Miller, Miracles of Modern Science, Peasant, Punch Brothers, Saint Motel, P.T. Walkley and the Wombats. Tickets to all of the O Music Awards shows can be purchased here. You can also catch the show live on your smart phone through the mobile web or the MTV News app. Here’s the full lineup of shows:
Photos from Anthony Mandler-directed clip also tease Lana looking like Marilyn Monroe, but leave A$AP Rocky as JFK a mystery. By Jocelyn Vena Lana Del Ray Photo: Lana Del Ray is doing her best Jackie O in a new still from her “National Anthem” video . She’s got the former First Lady’s look down to the very last detail, including that pillbox hat. In one still from the clip, posted on her Facebook , Lana sits in the back of a convertible, in her little suit, her veiled hat and her hair down. She looks back, possibly in the moments after President Kennedy, who will be portrayed by A$AP Rocky in the video, gets shot on that famous November day in 1963. Her eyes are covered with some of the lyrics from the track, “Red white blue in the skies,” and more lyrics, “Summer’s in the air/ And baby heaven’s in your eyes,” are scrolled across the bottom of the photo. In another still from the Anthony Mandler-directed video, Lana stands in a long white gown at some sort of presidential affair. She looks a bit more Marilyn Monroe in this shot, channeling the actress’ look when she famously sang “Happy Birthday” to President Kennedy. This time, the lyric “Tell me I’m your National Anthem” is written on the photo. In an interview with BBC Radio 1, Lana revealed why she wanted play Jacqueline Kennedy and recreate that historical time in her 10-minute video. “Every so often, I top what I’ve done, and this video is definitely the most beautiful thing I’ve ever done,” she said. “I wrote a treatment for me and A$AP Rocky, because I just thought he’d be really perfect to star in it. … I love it.” As for her better half in the video, the MC shared some details in a separate interview, noting that it might take a few years for people to really digest what they’ve committed to celluloid. “We did a video together … some swag sh–,” he said. “I play JFK, she plays Jackie O. Some cool, trippy sh–, some really 2015 sh–. People gonna get it in like three years, and that’s the whole purpose of it.” With no word on when the video will drop, fans will have to wait a little longer to see A$AP do his best Kennedy. “National Anthem” is the latest single off Del Ray’s 2012 album, Born to Die . More than 5,000 people auditioned on Saturday to see if they have what it takes to be the next Phillip Phillips. By Cory Midgarden Ryan Seacrest Photo: Exactly one month after crowning Phillip Phillips as Season 11’s “American Idol,” the hit television series is once again on the hunt for the next singing superstar. The auditions’ fourth stop drew more than 5,000 hopefuls to the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, on Saturday, all with dreams (or delusions) of hearing those four life-changing words: “You’re going to Hollywood!” Among the hopefuls “Idol” host Ryan Seacrest, who was confident in Seasons 12’s success. “We actually now realize we don’t know what we’re going to find, and that makes for the best season,” Seacrest said. “When we set out to find something specifically it doesn’t work out as well, so when we don’t know it usually works out best.” Although the show set its sights for nothing particular, many of the singers in attendance knew exactly what they had to offer the show. “I’m someone like Beyonc
‘He hit me, and I was like, ‘Oww, man!’ ‘ frontman recalls of his training during ‘MTV First: Maroon 5.’ By Kara Warner, with reporting by James Montgomery Maroon 5’s Adam Levine Photo: Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine gets his Raging Bull on in the new “One More Night” video. Levine and lead guitarist James Valentine were kind enough to premiere the action-packed new music video during “MTV First: Maroon 5” on Monday (June 25), and during the Q&A that immediately followed that debut, Levine revealed that he happily took a beating to prepare for the boxing aspect of the shoot. “I had a little bit of training. I’ll never forget. During the little bit of training, I got the guy who was training me. He hit me, and it hurt,” Levine admitted. “I’ve never really been in a full-blown fight before, but the guy hit me pretty hard. I’m a wimp, so it was worse [for me] than someone who’s tough, but he hit me, and I was like, ‘Oww, man!’ ” Levine said the boxing in the clip, which was born from the video treatment Levine wrote himself and delivered to director Peter Berg , is a metaphor for how our romantic entanglements can sometimes feel like a fight. ” ‘One More Night’ was one of the songs that was more far along when we heard it,” Levine recalled of first hearing the Max Martin and Shellback-produced track. “Shellback, who did ‘Moves Like Jagger’ with us, it was one of those things that the instant we heard it as a group, we thought, ‘Wow.’ “I do love the lyrics,” Levine continued. “The metaphor that we spoke of earlier, a relationship between two people, sometimes when it’s not going so well, it feels like a battle. Like a boxing match.” Stick with MTV News for more from our exclusive interview with Maroon 5! Related Videos MTV First: Maroon 5 Related Artists Maroon 5
‘I can respect that he wears his feelings on his sleeve,’ Kelis says of cover featuring her green wedding dress. By Rob Markman Nas’ Life is Good album cover Photo: If you were expecting Kelis to scream “I hate you so much right now” after seeing ex-hubby Nas’ Life Is Good album cover, then you have the “Milkshake” singer all wrong. For the cover of his upcoming solo LP, Nas posed with Kelis’ green wedding dress, the only item she left behind when she and the Queens rapper split. “My feelings about it are not really relevant, but at the end of the day, Nas is an artist and for whatever it’s worth, he’s one of the greatest — especially for what it is that he does,” Kelis told NME.com about the album cover during an interview at the Isle of Wight Festival in England this past weekend. Nas first spoke on the significance of the dress when VH1 profiled the usually private MC on their “Behind the Music” special. “She took her stuff out of the house and left her green wedding dress. And that was all she left,” he said. “It clicked right there. You’re saying it even in your interview. It’s like a given that this should allude to this being on the cover, that statement,” Nas told MTV News on June 12. “Some things you can’t plan, they happen.” The veteran MC likened himself to an old blues musician, an endearing quality that his ex-wife appreciates. “I feel like, especially someone in hip-hop to really kinda be genuine and honest, whatever the honesty is about, I think it’s awesome,” she said. “My feelings about it aren’t really necessarily valid, it’s just the fact that as an artist, I can respect that he wears his feelings on his sleeve. I like that.” Life Is Good is due out July 17. What is your favorite Nas album cover? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Nas Kelis

‘X Factor’ judge talks breakups and goes ‘old school’ on the latest stop of her summer tour. By Jocelyn Vena Demi Lovato performs at the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel, NJ on Friday Photo: HOLMDEL, NEW JERSEY — Not even rain showers could scare away the Lovatics who crowded the PNC Bank Arts Center to catch the latest stop on Demi Lovato ‘s summer tour Friday night. The star, who’s fitting in the trek between her judging duties on the “X Factor,” brought out some of New Jersey’s most devoted Demi fans. The star swaggered out to a killer guitar riff before busting out the night’s first song, “All Night Long.” She shimmied all night in red shorts, a black-and-white blazer and a sheer top, never once stumbling in her sky-high platforms. She displayed her rock-star bravado when she teased and flirted with her band during tracks that were hardly audible over all the screams. “Thank you so much for coming,” she told the crowd, “You guys are amazing. Let me just tell you guys, I love being in Jersey. It is one of my favorite places. You guys are the rowdiest fans.” Several tracks in, Demi displayed her musicianship by strapping on an acoustic guitar for “Catch Me,” only to switch over to a yellow electric one mid-song, proving that a ’70s rock goddess lurks inside the 19-year-old. Soon though, it was time to slow it down and she showed off her R&B princess side for the Unbroken ballad, “My Love Is a Star,” her vocal pyrotechnics mirrored by the lightning and thunder taking place just feet away from where the singer was performing. “This next song is a pretty personal song for me,” she told the room. “How many of you guys have been through a breakup? As you all know I’ve been through a few. I’ve been there and I made it through. I love you and I’m always there for you.” She then launched into an emotional version of her track, “Fix a Heart.” The intense moment, in which Lovato looked as though she was struggling to hold back her emotions, was met with cheers. She followed it with her now famous cover of Lil Wayne’s “How To Love.” But, things didn’t stay slow for long. “Who’s That Boy” picked up the pace followed by “You’re My Only Shorty,” “Here We Go Again,” and “La La Land.” And then came the perfect time for her big (albeit fleeting) plug of the night when she reminded room, “Recently I’ve been working on a show ‘X Factor’ [and I get to sit] next to Britney Spears … I’m gonna slow it down a little bit. Basically I just want to see you guys,” she added, requesting that the room hold up a cell phone or glow-stick or lighter if “you’re old school.” The firefly effect only made the impact of her slow jam, “Lightweight,” more grand. Next she sat at the piano and said, “Before my concerts I get to do a meet-and-greet with some of my fans, and some are brave enough to share some of their stories,” however as she got personal a guitar fell and she joked, “Well there goes that moment. … You don’t realize I got through my issues and my problems [because of you guys].” That was the perfect set-up for her defining power ballad, “Skyscraper.” Then, in an interesting twist, she went into the cover of Chris Brown’s “Turn Up the Music.” And to wrap up the first act of the show she did her own tracks “Together” and her rock-tinged “Remember December.” She came back out for her encore to deafening screams where she kept the energy turned up to a big 10 thanks to her disco anthem “Unbroken” and her current single, “Give Your Heart a Break.” Lovato will be on the road through September 1, with her special guests Hot Chelle Rae. The tour wraps up just in time for the premiere of “X Factor” September 12. Related Videos ‘Demi Lovato: Stay Strong’ Demi Lovato’s Year In Review Related Artists Demi Lovato
Experts predict animated film will hit #1 just as all 12 previous Pixar films have done. By Ryan J. Downey A scene from “Brave” Photo: By most accounts, “Brave” is expected to hit a box-office bull’s-eye this weekend. Industry watchers have predicted the latest from Disney/Pixar will continue the studio’s tradition of claiming the top spot. All 12 previous Pixar films hit #1 in wide release. The 3-D animated story of a free-spirited Scottish princess possessed of major bow-and-arrow prowess is set to debut in an estimated 4,000 locations. “The goodwill people feel for Pixar gets it to $62 million this weekend, even in the face of middling reviews,” IMDb’s Keith Simanton told MTV News. Jeff Bock, box-office analyst for Exhibitor Relations , and HitFix.com co-founder/ editor in chief Gregory Ellwood predicted an opening in the $60 million range for “Brave” as well, although NextMovie.com editor Kevin Polowy put the movie’s bow closer to $50 million. The Los Angeles Times estimated the movie’s opening as high as $65 million. Critics have been mostly kind to “Brave” thus far but have withheld the type of loving adoration reserved for the “Toy Story” movies. The consensus is that the movie is good, but not great in the way fans of the brand have come to expect. ” ‘Brave’ Is No ‘Incredibles’ — but See the Latest Pixar Flick Anyway …,” was the headline for E! Online ‘s review, which went on to say the movie “may not boast the pitch-perfect storytelling of ‘Ratatouille’ ” but “it has belly laughs aplenty.” Nevertheless, a $60 million opening would be very strong. “That’s similar to what ‘Cars 2’ and ‘WALL-E’ debuted with, which is nothing to sneeze at,” Ellwood noted. “Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted” managed to hang on to the top spot against new movies from Tom Cruise and Adam Sandler (which both flopped) last weekend and could pose somewhat of a problem for Pixar. ” ‘Madagascar 3’ is fast on its way to becoming the highest-grossing movie in the series, has tremendous word-of-mouth and benefits from being a better-known and trusted brand than ‘Brave,’ despite the Pixar connection,” Polowy pointed out. Simanton, on the other hand, said “Brave” doesn’t have much to worry about from last weekend’s #1 movie. ” ‘Madagascar’ benefited from having no competition for kids’ money during its run, but it’s winding down now. It likely makes $16 to $17M this weekend, but that won’t directly harm ‘Brave.’ ” Bock predicted $17 million for “Madagascar 3” as well, which will make for an excellent three-week total for a kid-franchise threequel. Simanton placed much of the movie’s success on its streamlined sense of purpose. “[It] went the same route as ‘Ice Age 3,’ almost dispensing with the need to continue to tell the story and heading instead to an almost purely comedic offering. The accountants would say that going for the laughs is good for the revenue stream. A parallel that I find interesting is ‘Kung Fu Panda 2.’ It opened better than ‘Ice Age 3’ with a higher per-theater average. However, it quickly suffered from its reviews and bad word-of-mouth. Things really changed when they hit the international stage: [‘Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs’] made more internationally than ‘Panda 2’ made in total.” Where the third “Madagascar” movie goes straight for the laughs, the first-ever Pixar movie to feature a female protagonist at the center of the story is filled with action, swordplay, hulking bears and themes of tradition, honor and independence. “Pixar films aren’t just family films, they reach out to every demographic, so having a film that is a bit more mature shouldn’t affect business much,” Bock said. “Female heroines have been hot, with ‘Twilight,’ ‘The Hunger Games’ and ‘Snow White and the Huntsman.’ It’s just a surprise it’s taken forward-thinking Pixar 12 films to give females a shot at headlining glory.” At times, “Brave” is much darker in tone than any previous Pixar movie. “It is much scarier than the standard Pixar offering and that will affect it,” Simanton said, adding that he found the film to be better than “Cars 2” but not as good as “Wall-E.” “Its comedic bits lack the Pixar touch. They’re loud and clumsy and not very much in character,” he said. As a result of all of these factors, he concluded, ” ‘Brave’ won’t likely have the same legs as other Pixar films in the coming weeks.” Whereas Pixar and the “Madagascar” franchise are well-known brands, the other big studio picture this weekend will likely suffer from a lack of awareness. Based on the book of the same name, “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter” is a mixture of action and horror that re-imagines the Civil War president as a stake-wielding badass. ” ‘Lincoln’ is looking at $20 million for the weekend,” Ellwood predicted. “Considering the early buzz, that’s face saving for 20th Century Fox.” “I think Fox would be fortunate if ‘Abe’ opened with $20+ million,” agreed Bock. “Mash-ups are typically a difficult sell, and historical/horror has never had a hit that I’m aware of. This is probably the riskiest endeavor of the summer, and the fact that it looks more like a video game than a movie certainly doesn’t help its cause.” “Director Timur Bekmambetov has gone up against Pixar before, when 2008’s ‘Wanted’ opened against ‘Wall-E’ and held its own, grossing $50 million,” Bock added. “But honestly, that had more to do with Angelina Jolie than anything else. With a cast of relative unknowns, ‘Lincoln’ may find itself without much public support.” Opening in more than 3,000 locations, “Lincoln” will need to match the $24 million collected by “Zombieland” in order to be considered a success, according to Simanton. “I’m putting it at $19 million, but it may be closer to $17 million,” he said. If “Lincoln” isn’t a success, it could spell more trouble for “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies,” which has already had a rough road going from the page to the screen. Even with Lionsgate behind the film and Natalie Portman attached as producer, the project has already been through three directors since it was first announced. “If ‘Abe’ outright bombs this weekend, [‘Pride’] may just be dead,” Bock said. “Even the undead know that’s not a good thing. With an estimated budget of $70 million, ‘Abe’ isn’t that big of risk for Fox, but they need more than just fanboys to convert the masses. Odds are this is headed more towards pennies than $5 bills, though, as this is the strangest-looking film to open since ‘Howard the Duck.’ And we know how that ended.” Simanton likened “Lincoln” to one of last week’s bombs. “It falls into that nether realm occupied by ‘Rock of Ages.’ Guys were supposed to go to it but didn’t. Those exit poll demographics will harm ‘Pride and Prejudice and Zombies’ if they don’t skew towards the coveted 18-35 male.” Whether or not “Seeking a Friend for the End of the World” does decent business this weekend shouldn’t have any long-term effects for Steve Carell and his post-“Office” career. “It’s a low-budget indie he shot that is being released semi-wide,” Ellwood noted. “If it was a big studio release, it would be much more important.” “It’s not a big studio film and isn’t being presented as one in the marketing or [as] a film Carell is supposed to carry,” agreed Simanton. “Steve Carell is already a bona fide movie star. ‘The 40 Year Old Virgin’ solidified that,” Bock added. ” ‘The Office’ certainly helped bring him to the forefront, but he’s so popular now, he can afford to take some risks. ‘Seeking a Friend’ probably won’t be a huge hit, but it will definitely have its fans.” “If the guy survived the mega-budgeted bomb ‘Evan Almighty,’ he can survive anything,” Polowy said. Woody Allen’s “To Rome With Love” will open in even fewer theaters than Carell’s picture. Last year, Allen had his biggest success to date ($56.8 million domestically) with Sony Pictures Classic’s “Midnight in Paris,” which boasts a 93 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes . This weekend’s follow-up sat at 53 percent at press time. “Woody Allen had the biggest gross of his career with ‘Paris,’ but as is the case with ‘The Woodman,’ for every amazing film he unspools, there are two or three misfires,” Bock said.”That’s the risk you take making a movie every year as he has done. Nobody can churn out quality every time.” ” ‘Rome”s reviews have been unkind and that typically does handicap an Allen film,” Simanton said. ” ‘Midnight”s immediate predecessor, ‘You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger’ — which isn’t all that bad, in my opinion — barely made $3.2 million domestically in its entire run.” Ellwood predicted that “Rome” will perform “closer to a traditional Allen movie” than “Paris,” with somewhere between $5 million to $10 million domestically. Lovato shuts down rumors that she and Horan are dating in a recent radio interview. By Jocelyn Vena Demi Lovato Photo: So, are they or aren’t they? Well, according to Demi Lovato herself, she and One Direction ‘s Niall Horan aren’t dating. While he called her a “cool girl” in a recent interview and there’s even been suggestion that they’ve Skyped with each other — the mark of any true romance — the singer herself, in a new radio interview, says he’s nothing more than a pal. “I don’t even know who One Direction is … it’s so crazy. I’m kidding,” she told B104 Radio . “No, Niall’s a friend of mine. I do know who he is and everyone knows who One Direction is.” While they are just friends, she does note that his “cool” feelings for her are reciprocated. “But, yeah, we’re just friends,” she said. “And he’s awesome.” Regardless of where Demi and Niall stand in the romance department, Niall’s bandmates hinted he might want to be more than friends in a recent appearance on the Canadian entertainment news show “etalk.” In a game called “Rapid Fire Romance,” a photo of a female celebrity would show up, and the guys had to pick which of their bandmates would be the best match. When Demi’s photo came up in the pile, Horan’s bandmate, Louis Tomlinson, joked, “Niall. 100 percent.” From there, Harry Styles, had a bit more fun at Horan’s expense, further joking, “Niall dreams dirty things!” Since the guys dropped their chart-topping debut, Up All Night, there have been a number of romance rumors about them floating around. Most notably, Harry Styles had been famously linked to Taylor Swift for some time. When MTV News chatted with the guys earlier this year about all the love they have been receiving from the pop world’s biggest princesses, they admitted they didn’t mind all the attention. “[It’s] really exciting, I suppose,” Liam Payne said back in April shortly after they performed at the Kids’ Choice Awards. “And even following Katy Perry on the stage as well was a big thing for us. It’s just amazing to be in the same room as these sort of people, for us to just come over from England and just be involved.” Related Videos MTV News Extended Play: One Direction Related Photos The Evolution Of: Demi Lovato Related Artists Demi Lovato One Direction
