Lil Scrappy Recalls Momma Dee’s Gritty Pimp Days

‘At the end of the day, mom took care of home,’ ‘Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta’ star Scrappy tells ‘RapFix Live.’ By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Lil Scrappy on “RapFix Live” Photo: One episode in, VH1’s “Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta” already has captivated audiences with its wild cast of characters. Perhaps the most magnetic of the bunch is Momma Dee, mother to rap star Lil Scrappy . Momma Dee comes off as overprotective and overbearing, but it is clear that there is nothing she wouldn’t do for her children, including selling drugs and pimping to make ends meet. When Lil Scrappy appeared on Wednesday’s “RapFix Live,” he opened up about the lengths his mother went to to provide for him. “Mom dukes was layin’ it down hard back in the day when I was coming up,” Lil Scrappy said. He recalled a time when a prostitute who was working for his mother left to join with a rival pimp. When Momma Dee finally met up with her ex-worker, violence ensued and a young Scrappy was there to witness it all. “My mama caught her slippin’ in traffic and bust her across the head with a crowbar,” he recalled. “That crowbar was stuck in her head and she was sittin’ there shakin’.” While the incident affected him at the time, the ATL rapper now awkwardly laughs it off. While Scrappy admits that he had to see some pretty awful things as a youngster, he doesn’t resent his mom for any of it. “I had to sleep in a room with mom dukes, and my little sister because all the whores was using the rooms to do their thing,” he said. “But at the end of the day, mom took care of home. Me and my sister ain’t never had to hurt for nothin’.” Related Videos ‘RapFix Live’ Gets Scrappy Related Artists Lil Scrappy

Justin Bieber Goes Home, Recalls His Roots

In ‘All Around the World’ NBC special, Bieber shares, ‘It’s important I never forget where I came from.’ By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber on his “All Around The World” special Photo: Last time on Justin Bieber ‘s primetime special, “All Around the World,” the singer’s camp worried about him after he fell down some stairs following a concussion he suffered running into a glass wall during his performance in Paris. Well, on part two of the NBC special, fans get to see just what happened next. “He’s got a nice little bump. Doctors said he should be OK,” his manager, Scooter Braun, shares. “It just scared me in general when he was nonresponsive. … In that moment, when he was not waking up, that was scary.” While Braun was concerned about the star’s wellbeing, later on, Bieber is shown being mostly concerned about whether you can see the bump he got in the process. After wrapping up his time in Paris, Bieber embarks on more dates in Italy and Spain, where he meets more screaming, crying fans. “The team is definitely like a family. There’s never a dull moment,” Bieber says of his tour crew. “Seeing fans is always the most important to me,” he later says of his devotees. “I wouldn’t be in this position without them. Sometimes it can get really chaotic … but I go out of my way.” In addition to traveling the globe with his tightknit road family, in Spain, Bieber is joined by his little sister and dad. “Just being able to come back at the end of the night and see my little sister, it’s amazing,” he shares. While he has folks like his crew and family to keep him grounded, the pandemonium he causes everywhere he goes never lets up. Mexico City is next on the schedule. “I miss home … but it’s all worth it. I get to do so many other things that I wouldn’t get to experience. It’s been really a blessing,” he says. “I have definitely changed over the last few years, and I think it’s for the good. I think that I’m getting more mature. But as far me as a person, I think I’ll always be the same person.” Later on, Bieber visits his hometown in Canada. While there, he performs on the same street corner where he used to play before he was famous, noting how “weird” it is to do his own song there rather than a cover. “For me, it’s important I never forget where I came from,” he says. His trip around the globe ends in the Big Apple, where he prepares for a number of appearances and shows, including his now-infamous performance at the Apollo Theater , which he finished unplugged after losing power. “I want to go someplace Michael [Jackson] performed,” he says in the lead-up to the performance. Instead of shutting it down, Bieber continued the show with a sing-along and a dance battle, much to the delight of his fans. “My fans, to me, mean the world. I’m very blessed, and I have all my Beliebers to thank for that,” he notes. “I never thought that I would be in the position that I am now. I think that it’s so important that if you have a dream to just believe.” While in New York City, he also appeared on his very own MTV special, “Bieber Live,” where he opened up about his just-released new album, Believe . ‘Brave,’ ‘Hunger Games’ And The History Of Lady Archers

As Princess Merida joins the big-screen leagues of Katniss Everdeen, we look at the sport’s storied past, in Hobnobbing. By Amy Wilkinson Jennifer Lawrence in “The Hunger Games” Photo: A fiery bow-and-arrow-wielding heroine not named Katniss Everdeen? Color us intrigued! This weekend, Pixar will take aim at the box-office bull’s-eye with its first foray into the fairy-tale princess pic. ” Brave ” follows a young Scottish royal named Merida, who bucks her parents’ wishes, insisting on paving her own path — with bow firmly in hand. Of course, the animated flick is only the latest this year to feature an adept bow-woman (or bowman). There was Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) in “The Avengers,” William (Sam Claflin) in “Snow White and the Huntsman” and, our obvious favorite, Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) in ” The Hunger Games .” Unsurprisingly, this slew of big-screen portrayals has helped revive interest in the ancient sport , with more and more amateur archers sizing up their targets. But let’s be clear about one thing: Bow-besotted babes are nothing new. Lady archers have been around practically since the dawn of time. Follow me down their storied path: Like most grand ideas, the concept of a woman and her bow has roots in Greek mythology. “Amazon” may be a compliment for a leggy lady nowadays, but maybe it shouldn’t be, considering the ancient archers were often depicted with their left breast cut off to make wielding their weaponry simpler. The Greek goddess of the hunt, Artemis, was also frequently pictured holding a bow and arrow (sans missing mammary glands). Throughout the Middle Ages, archery served dual purposes: fending off enemies and hunting prey for sustenance. But by the Elizabethan era, it had become a posh pastime, with proper ladies learning the sport — along with dancing and riding — as part of their studies. (P.E. was soooo much cooler back then.) In fact, Queen Elizabeth I herself (daughter of Henry VIII) is said to have been a skilled archer. A few hundred years later, the sport made its Olympics debut in 1900, with women taking up arms at the 1904 games. The event took a hiatus from the Games between 1920 and 1972, reappearing at the Munich Olympics. And while plenty of Hollywood heavyweights have learned the skill for a movie, one took it upon herself to learn for the sport of it. Actress Geena Davis made it all the way to the semifinal rounds of the Olympic trials in 1999, hoping to compete in the 2000 games in Sydney. The games and a gold medal were not in Davis’ future, but she already has one gilded goody (namely, an Oscar) to console herself. And speaking of actresses and archery, the last few decades have offered up a bumper crop of bow roles, from Gwyneth Paltrow in “Emma” to Saoirse Ronan in “Hannah.” And, of course, Lawrence in “The Hunger Games.” All we have so say is, may the odds be ever in your favor, lady archers! Is Katniss your favorite fictional archer? Do you plan to see “Brave” this weekend? Sound off in the comments below and tweet me @amymwilk with your thoughts and suggestions for future columns! Katy Perry Doesn’t Want To ‘Hide’ From Divorce

‘I couldn’t avoid the elephant in the room,’ she tells MTV News of including Russell Brand in ‘Part of Me.’ By Kara Warner Katy Perry Photo: Katy Perry ‘s feature-film debut is every bit a concert movie as it is an emotional biography of sorts. For every scene that features her pop-star persona and killer stadium performances, there are several quieter, much more emotional scenes surrounding Perry’s very public split with Russell Brand that make “Katy Perry: Part of Me” a wholly moving film. When MTV News caught up with Perry on Friday (June 22), we asked why she wanted to include footage of the moment when Perry realized her relationship with Brand was over and she couldn’t do anything but sob. “In my personal struggle, you see me not changing and not giving up on this dream that I’ve had my whole life. Hopefully people are inspired by that,” Perry said. “You don’t always see me with all the gorgeous lighting and makeup on and all that. I think it’s fine. Hollywood is so fake and people need to realize that people are just people, and you, too, don’t need to be born into something or have money or have whatever product someone is hawking on you. Find out what your gift is and nurture it.” Because the film is her film, there is naturally only one side of the Perry/Brand breakup shown, so we asked the “Wide Awake” singer if she felt pressure in revealing what happened to her and whether she wonders when and if another side to their story will come out in the media. “The truth will always prevail,” Perry said. “Everything has to be handled with integrity and appropriately, and it’s not nice to air all your dirty laundry, because that stinks, so I had to be very delicate with the situation, but I couldn’t avoid the elephant in the room,” she explained. “If you were to have seen that movie and walked out and [my breakup] wasn’t at all mentioned like it never happened, you’d be like, ‘Eh, this is weird, what is she trying to hide?’ I don’t like to hide.” Check out everything we’ve got on ” Katy Perry: Part of Me. ” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Kings Of Leon’s Caleb Followill And Wife Welcome Baby

Dixie Pearl Followill was born on Thursday in Nashville. By Gil Kaufman Lily Aldridge and Caleb Followill Photo: Kings of Leon singer Caleb Followill and his wife, model Lily Aldridge , welcomed their first child, Dixie Pearl Followill, on Thursday in Nashville. According to People magazine, the bouncing bundle of joy arrived at the rock-star hour of 1 a.m., weighing a healthy 7 pounds, 11 ounces and measuring 22 inches long. “Mom, dad and baby are happy, healthy and enjoying their new addition,” a spokesperson for the band told the magazine. The couple were married in Santa Barbara, California, in May 2011 at San Ysidro Ranch after dating for more than two years. The birth of the couple’s daughter puts a happy cap on what was, by all accounts, a rather tumultuous year for the Kings. After releasing the Come Around Sundown album to modest reviews and sales, the band picked a fight with “Glee” creator Ryan Murphy (who would subsequently apologize for calling the band “self-centered a–holes”) and released the well-received documentary, “Talihina Sky.” Last summer included a much-publicized incident at a Dallas concert in which Followill claimed to suffer a bout of “heat exhaustion,” leading to the band scrapping the remainder of their U.S. tour and calls from his bandmates to enter rehab to deal with a reported alcohol problem. They returned to the road in September for a run of Canadian shows. They wrapped the year with a tour of Australia and a pair of Grammy nominations: Best Rock Album for Sundown and a Best Long Form Music Video nom for “Talihina Sky.” Related Artists Kings Of Leon

Wiz Khalifa And SpaceGhostPurrp ‘Definitely Cool’

‘Wiz is a positive dude,’ SGP tells Mixtape Daily, denying any beef in wake of his Taylor Gang dis track. By Rob Markman SpaceGhostPurrp Photo: Behind the Beats: SpaceGhostPurrp SpaceGhostPurrp may currently be at odds with A$AP Rocky, but the Miami rapper/producer doesn’t exactly come off as a troublemaker. Many thought that SpaceGhost and Wiz Khalifa had a problem after Purrp released a track called “F— Taylor Gang,” but together they proved a little conversation can go a long way. “Me and Wiz, we definitely cool, and the song that I made last year about the Taylor Gang thing, it was basically about me saying F the neighborhood,” SGP told Mixtape Daily during a May interview. Khalifa’s reach is wide, and his passionate Taylor Gang fanbase doesn’t just reside in Wiz’s native Pittsburgh. “It’s a neighborhood where there were a bunch of kids reppin’ Taylor Gang and they were disrespecting my Raider Klan, so we had a feud back then, so I made that towards them,” SpaceGhost said of the dis track that he aimed at the unaffiliated Taylors. After hearing A$AP Rocky’s “Pretty Flacko,” a track that Purrp produced, Wiz reached out to the rising rap talent. “I love that beat. I’m like, ‘Man, that beat is hard as hell,’ ” Wiz said when he appeared on “RapFix Live” back in April. “After that he sent me that crazy beat, and me and Juicy [J] went in.” The two were quickly able to hash out any misunderstandings and get to work. The beat that SpaceGhost sent would eventually become “T.A.P.,” one of Khalifa’s favorite songs from his Taylor Allderdice mixtape . “Wiz is a positive dude — the Taylors that was down in Miami, they were ruthless,” Purrp said. “I just wanted him to know that song wasn’t directed to him; it was for the negative people who support his movement in my neighborhood.” Purrp is looking to keep the positive vibes rolling. He recently released his independent debut album, Mysterious Phonk: The Chronicles of SpaceGhostPurrp, a collection of his best mixtape tracks over the past year. Cee Lo Looks To Please Fans Old And New With Goodie Mob Album

‘Our coming together after a 12-year hiatus is somewhat of a testament to our elasticity,’ Cee Lo Green tells MTV News of the Goodie Mob reunion. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Felicia Morris Cee Lo Green Photo: Goodie Mob defined hip-hop’s dirty south sound before such a descriptor even existed, mixing uplifting raps with bass-heavy funk. Cee Lo Green , Big Gipp, T-Mo and Khujo, along with their Dungeon Family affiliates OutKast, were largely responsible for making Atlanta rap’s southern capital. The last time the Mob dropped an album as a quartet was 1999’s World Party, but now they are back. “The Goodie Mob, we definitely are reunited. And we’ve been working on that album really vigorously and it’s coming out very well,” Cee Lo Green told MTV News while at a Los Angeles taping for TV Land’s new sitcom “Soul Man.” “I think people are going to be very pleased. You know our core audience and also this new audience that we are aspiring to acquire.” The comeback LP, which is titled Age Against the Machine, doesn’t have a release date, but in April the group gave fans their first taste of the album when they performed their new single “Fight To Win” on “The Voice.” The televised performance showed a Goodie Mob quite different from what their day-one fans may remember. While singing the motivational ode, Khujo, Gipp and T-Mo donned gold battle armor and matching capes, resembling a squad of triumphant Roman soldiers. The song has been catching on, it was chosen as the official theme for the 2012 NBA Playoffs and ran on television spots throughout the two-month sporting tournament. It’s been over a decade since we’ve seen Goodie together, but Cee Lo says it was bound to happen. “Well, you know, it was just a matter of time, it’s very faithful and we’re a family,” he explained. “And you know we were never separate from each other completely. So our coming together after a 12-year hiatus is somewhat of a testament to our elasticity if you will. That’s what I call it.” Are you looking forward to the Goodie Mob comeback album? Trae Tha Truth In ‘Pain’ After Death Of Dinky D

Houston MC is ‘grateful to be livin’ ‘ after a shooting that left his friend dead at the scene. By Rob Markman Trae Tha Truth Photo: Trae tha Truth is on the mend after being shot early Wednesday morning, but the Houston rapper is more hurt by the death of his friend Dinky D . On Wednesday, Trae tweeted “I Appreciate All Tha Prayers, Calls, & Luv.. I’m Ok … I’m On The Road To Recovery… I Love Y’all….. #Amen,” but on Thursday (June 21), he began to express his grief. “Sitting Here Thinking & Being Greatful To Be Livin… But Can’t explain Tha Pain Felt For Those Who Died #GodBlessTheDead …,” he wrote. “I done been through hell and back these last 3 years..& Thinking of Dinky Fighting for his last breath knowin nothing can be done… Damn.” Houston’s self-proclaimed “King of the Streets” was rushed to the hospital and treated for his gunshot wound on Wednesday morning following a shootout at an after-hours club in Southwest Houston. While Trae has since been treated and released, three victims, including ABN crew member Dinky D and affiliate Poppa C, died at the scene. “The injury that Trae Tha Truth sustained last evening in the form of a gun shot wound at Scores Night Club in Houston, TX, does not nearly compare to the wound he feels in his heart for the lives that were lost,” read a press release that was sent to MTV News on behalf of the MC. The shooting has not only affected family and friends but the Texas rap community as well. “RIP Dinky D and Poppa c,” Bun B tweeted on Wednesday. Slim Thug followed with his own message. “Im just waking up hearing all this, we was all together yesterday prayers out to the whole #ABN I can’t believe Dinky died #RIP Dinky.” Trae’s press release urged that the rapper was not the intended target. “This shooting is nothing more than an extremely unfortunate incident in which Trae also fell victim to a random act of violence; the same act that Trae tirelessly attempts to prevent and protect Houston citizens through his 501(c)3 non profit organization, Angel By Nature,” the statement read. In an interview with XXLMag.com, Trae painted a picture for the horrific incident. “I’m not sure exactly what the altercation was necessarily about, but long story short, whatever transpired, they ran in my direction, so in the process of running in my direction, that kind of had everybody in the open,” he said . “So as the altercation came my way, shots were being dispersed, but since it was coming our direction, it was a crowd of people. Everybody was wrong place, wrong time.” The death of Trae’s close friend Clip D last November weighed heavily on the rapper. “I kinda went back in a shell. I got back in that zone where it was F the world, I didn’t want to be bothered, I didn’t want to look at nobody,” Trae told Mixtape Daily during a February interview in Orlando, Florida. No arrests have been made in connection to the shooting. Related Artists Trae Tha Truth
