Tyler, The Creator Wants MellowHype To ‘Get Their Shine’

‘People focus on me so much instead of the whole OF collective,’ Tyler tells MTV News of buzzworthy Hodgy Beats and Left Brain. By Steven Roberts, with reporting by Matt Elias Odd Future’s Hodgy Beats and Tyler The Creator Photo: Tim Mosenfelder/ Getty Images Odd Future ‘s MellowHype may seem to have gotten lost in Tyler, the Creator’s shadow, but the rapper/producer duo of Hodgy Beats and Left Brain are still making a name for themselves. The duo released the Matt Alonzo-directed music video for “64” on Monday at midnight through the OF collective’s website . The song serves as the first single the Fat Possum Records re-release of MellowHype’s BlackenedWhite album, which drops on July 12. MellowHype first performed “64” on Fuel TV’s “Daily Habit” with labelmates Bass Drum of Death, and it has since become a fan favorite at OF shows. When MTV News caught up with Odd Future’s de facto leader, Tyler, the Creator , he said he was sure Hodgy and Left Brain could carry the OF momentum. “I know they can, it’s just that people focus on me so much instead of the whole OF collective. If they look deeper, they’ll find way more stuff,” Tyler said. “I want them to get their shine and stuff. I want to make sure that everyone knows the whole circle instead of just R. Kelly.” Tyler also said he wasn’t really thinking about the numbers for his recently released second album. Goblin debuted at #5 on the Billboard album chart, selling more than 45,000 copies in its first week, and Tyler couldn’t be less concerned one way or another. “I think it’s cool. I’m a kid who just made f—ing music out of boredom and made it to #5 [on the charts]. They’ll never be able to do what I did or what I can do. They could never play instruments or start a cult of kids and sell those records. They just sit and talk about it, so I don’t really care. And I’m R. Kelly.” What do you think of Odd Future’s MellowHype? Let us know in the comments! Katy Perry’s ‘Last Friday Night’ Invite Thrills Hanson

‘We thought we could bring the party — even if it was a fictional party,’ Taylor Hanson tells MTV News of video cameo. By Jocelyn Vena Hanson Photo: Getty Images Katy Perry rounded up quite the cast of cameos for her “Last Friday Night” video . The Marc Klasfeld-directed clip featured “Glee” stars Darren Criss and Kevin McHale, “Friday” singer Rebecca Black, Kenny G, Debbie Gibson and Corey Feldman. Oh, yeah: It also had Hanson as the video’s house band! “We were flattered to be asked, and it was great to be a part of it,” Taylor Hanson told MTV News on Tuesday (June 14). “We had a really good time. It was one of those things that worked out really well. They said [they] needed a band to play the party, and we thought we could bring the party — even if it was a fictional party. “First of all, Kenny G’s an icon, so it was pretty awesome to, in some ways, have been able to perform together,” Taylor continued. “And, again, there’s a little bit of the tongue-in-cheek element to the entire concept of the video. We went in there without taking it too seriously. [Kenny G] was a scholar and gentleman, and it seemed like Katy was fulfilling the idea. She seemed like she was pretty happy with how things were coming together.” Taylor said it was hard to get Perry out of character as the geeky Kathy Beth Terry on set. “She was completely in character and to the point of like, ‘OK, where does Katy Perry begin and this character end?’ ” he recalled. “And, honestly, it seemed like she kind of is a Method person. She seems like she goes in all the way. So we hung out a little bit, and during the performance and everything, obviously, we were all there on set, but she was definitely inside of the character throughout the shoot, which sounds tiring to me.” So what would it take to get the guys to play your house party? “We work for Twizzlers and good times,” Taylor said. “You’d have to have a lot of spandex, a huge tree covered in toilet paper, Kenny G — apparently that’s what it takes to get us to a house party.” And now Katy owes the brothers a cameo in their next video. “I think she has some obligation to spread the love on the next round,” he said. “I don’t know. … We might have to come up with another character.” What did you think of Hanson’s cameo in Katy’s new video? Selena Gomez Tells Fans She’s Doing ‘Much Better’

Teen star performed a mini-show with her band the Scene on Monday, after a brief hospitalization. By Kara Warner Selena Gomez performs at Santa Monica Place on June 13 Photo: Jean Baptiste Lacroix/ WireImage Selena Gomez was back onstage and appeared to be in much better health on Monday (June 13). The Disney star spent the weekend recovering after being hospitalized last Thursday in Los Angeles for a combination of food poisoning and exhaustion. The 18-year-old singer/actress took the stage for a performance at the Santa Monica Place mall Monday afternoon, wearing a flowing, white blouse over a white tank top, black shorts, and black strappy heels. Gomez and her band, the Scene, played two of her hit songs, “Who Says” and “A Year Without Rain,” to cheers from the crowd. Gomez thanked her fans profusely for coming out to see her and for their support, especially in the last few days. She also apologized for missing her original appearance, which had been scheduled for this past Friday. “I want to thank you so much for coming. If you guys came on Friday, I’m so sorry that I couldn’t be here,” she said before the band struck up the first few notes of “Who Says.” “I love you guys very much.” Although Gomez didn’t do any crazy dance movies or flips, she performed each song with plenty of energy. Her voice sounded strong and steady. At the end of the second song, the teen star answered a few questions from fans in the audience, mostly pegged to her experience filming the upcoming movie “Monte Carlo,” around which the event was organized. Gomez did take a brief moment to assure her fans (and the throng of reporters also gathered) that she’s feeling just fine. “I’m feeling much better, thank you,” she said. By Rob Markman Lily Allen Photo: Getty First comes love, then comes marriage, and now comes confirmation that singer Lily Allen is soon to be pushing a baby carriage. The 26-year-old singer wed decorator and businessman Sam Cooper on Saturday at St. James the Great Church in Gloucestershire, England. The nuptials weren’t all the couple had to celebrate: according to People magazine , the groom confirmed to several wedding guests that the newlyweds are expecting a child. Allen and Cooper began dating in the summer of 2009. They got engaged while vacationing in Indonesia in December. In November 2010 Allen suffered a heartbreaking miscarriage, her second. Shortly thereafter she was hospitalized with septicaemia , a dangerous infection characterized by the presence of bacteria in the blood. But on Saturday her troubles seemed far behind her. The singer looked radiant in her long-sleeve lace gown by French designer Delphine Manivet. Manivet spoke about the “It’s Not Me, It’s You” singer’s pregnancy to British paper The Telegraph, saying, “It’s beautiful that she is pregnant, and I am very happy for her. She is very happy about that — it is something wonderful. “For me, and for her too, when you are pregnant you want to show that, but also be respectful, so the dress was perfect for her, for that moment,” the designer added. The bride was given away by her father, actor Keith Allen, and gripped a bouquet of white roses as she exited the church with Cooper. The crowd of friends and family cheered as the couple entered a waiting car and drove off. Related Artists Lily Allen

Tech N9ne Bringing Lil Wayne, B.o.B Into His World

‘Different artists are supposed to hook up and make something beautiful,’ the underground MC tells MTV News. By Rob Markman Tech N9ne Photo: MTV News Among his underground following, Tech N9ne can do no wrong. But his fans, appropriately dubbed the Technicians, did get a little uppity when news broke that the Kansas City, Missouri, rap veteran would be collaborating with the likes of Lil Wayne on Tech’s recently released All 6’s and 7’s. “No, I was not afraid of the backlash because I was getting it when Wayne said he wanted to work with me to [Hot 97 DJ] Funkmaster Flex when he was in Rikers,” Tech N9ne told MTV News during an intimate sit-down at his Strange Music headquarters in Lee Summit, Missouri. “All of my fans, a lot of my fans were like, ‘Oh no, don’t f— with Wayne. No, no, no, he’s mainstream and you’re underground — it don’t mix.’ ” In October 2010, while still serving his eight-month prison bid for gun possession, Weezy revealed to Flex that he would like to work with Tech. For Tecca Nina, Wayne’s name-drop was an introduction point for new and curious fans, but for his long time die-hards, there was some skepticism. “Different artists are supposed to hook up and make something beautiful, that’s what makes music wonderful, I think,” Tech said, defending against criticism that he was selling out. “I already knew what I was gonna do. When I get with these [well-known collaborators], the beats gotta say their names.” The resulting collabo is “F— Food,” a raunchy track that not only features Weezy, but T-Pain on the hook as well. The song’s lyrical depiction of explicit sex acts will make it a hard sell for radio, but then again according to Tech, airplay was never the point of the union. “Everybody else is just going to try to put it on radio and big hit, boom and get their money off these cats. Nah, I just want to do beautiful music,” he said. The Young Money CEO isn’t the only popular rapper to appear on All 6’s and 7’s, Atlanta’s B.o.B also lends his production and lyrics to the project on “Am I a Psycho?.” The dreary track is a far cry from Bob’s 2010 radio hits “Nuthin’ On You” and “Airplanes.” Tech remembers the feeling he got when he first heard the beat and often reminds fans of B.o.B’s oft-overlooked lyrical prowess. “I chose it like, ‘Whoa,’ he did the beat and he did the chorus and I said, ‘That’s my world right there,’ and he wrote a verse for it. He’s a lyricist,” he said before citing Bob’s very first single, 2007’s “Haterz Everywhere,” as further proof. “That was thugged-out; that was gutter. I ain’t forgot B.o.B; he supposed to expand. But I know he can go, so we did ‘Am I a Pyscho?’ with Hopsin.” Snoop Dogg, Busta Rhymes, Twista, Yelawolf, Kendrick Lamar and Stephen Carpenter of the Deftones also appearances on All 6’s and 7’s, but Tech N9ne puts any notions that he’s going mainstream to rest. “I brought people into my world,” he said. Fabolous To Celebrate 10-Year Anniversary With Loso’s Way 2 Release

‘We’re looking to do that around September 13,” Fab says of his forthcoming album. By Rob Markman Fabolous (file) Photo: Jonathan Leibson/ WireImage Time flies when you’re making hits. On September 11, 2001, Brooklyn rapper Fabolous graduated from a slick-tongued mixtape MC to a bona fide platinum rap star with the release of his debut album, Ghetto Fabolous. To celebrate his 10-year run, Fab plans to release his sixth studio album, Loso’s Way 2: The Rise to Power , on September 13. Mr. F-A-B-O revealed his plans to morning show radio jock Vezzy Parmesan of Rhode Island’s Hot 106.3. “That’s coming in September, we’re looking to do that around September 13 actually,” Fab said of Loso’s Way 2 from backstage at Hot 106’s all-star Hot Night concert. “September 11 was when my first album dropped, 10 years ago. That was also the tragic day of 9/11. So my album dropped that same day and we kinda want to do like a 10-year-anniversary sort of feel.” Fab Pitt, whose last album, Loso’s Way, featured collaborations from The Dream, Lil Wayne, Trey Songz and Ryan Leslie, wouldn’t confirm who he will be working with on this album, but he did reveal a short wish list of artists he’d like to contribute in the future. Among those names are Eminem, Nas, Rick Ross and Fergie, but beyond that, Fab kept it tight-lipped. “I’m working with a lot of guys right now. It’s still in the baby stages, so I don’t want to give too much of the info right now, but it’s soon to come.” Dropping the album 10 years after his first effort is symbolic for the rapper. He told Parmesan that the release of his debut remains his top career highlight. “To finally get to a point when you release your first album, it’s like having a baby,” he said. “It’s like having your first baby, even just accepting it was happening at first.” Although Fab’s shining moment was marred by the tragedy of 9/11, he eventually learned to embrace it. “I woke up that day and some planes flew into some buildings. That’s another thing that makes it so monumental to me too, is that you were destined, even [with] what happened, you still prevailed and you’re here today.” Related Videos ‘RapFix Live’ With Fabolous Related Artists Fabolous

Wiz Khalifa Squashes Waka Flocka Flame Beef Rumors

After wowing Bonnaroo crowd on Saturday, Wiz shut down gossip, telling MTV News, ‘Me and Waka and are cool.’ By James Montgomery Wiz Khalifa at Bonnaroo 2011 Photo: Rob Loud/ Getty Images MANCHESTER, Tennessee – Wiz Khalifa’s Saturday evening set at the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival was, by his own admission, probably the biggest show he’s played since bursting onto the scene last year. And feeding upon the vibes of the crowd, he delivered a set that was as loose and lively as it was hit-packed and hungry. “I was feeling the energy the whole time, and I’ve been doing a lot of shows and growing as a performer and an artist, so I just wanted to build on all that,” he told MTV News following the performance. “Being a top act on such a huge stage in front of so many people, it’s a great starting point for my career, because a lot of people work their whole careers and then get here.” Of course, though he was still basking in the afterglow of his Bonnaroo set, Wiz also felt the need to address an issue that (supposedly) occurred at another of his big-stage shows: rumors of a backstage altercation with Waka Flocka Flame at Hot 97’s Summer Jam in New York earlier this month. “Yeah, nothing happened backstage,” Khalifa said. “It’s always something; making up some rumor about something happening with me backstage during somebody’s set, but nothing happened. Me and Waka and are cool. That’s just people trying to promote negativity.” And to hear Wiz tell it, there’s been a whole lot of that negativity going on in recent months. But, as he continues on the upswing of his young career, he’s not going to let any of it get him down. After all, there will be plenty more shows like Bonnaroo on the horizon, and he prefers to focus on that. “There’s just so much fake sh– going on. Like, people will buy into what’s fake. According to people, this isn’t my Rolex, you know?” he said. “But that’s just what mugs like to think and what they like to talk about, but the reality of the situation is everything’s under control. And this is my Rolex. That I bought.” Did you catch Wiz’s set at Bonnaroo? Share your reviews in the comments!
