My Chemical Romance Team With Fans On ‘Sing It For Japan’

Band will release charity version of latest single and fan-fueled video, with all proceeds going to Red Cross efforts. By James Montgomery My Chemical Romance’s Gerard Way Photo: Samir Hussein/ Getty Images My Chemical Romance have announced plans to release a charity version of their song “Sing,” with all proceeds going to the Red Cross’ disaster relief efforts in Japan. But they’re not doing it alone. Instead, they’re reaching out to members of their MCRmy to help the cause. The band is asking fans to submit videos, pictures, drawings and written messages to the people of Japan through social sites like Twitter — using the hashtag #SINGItForJapan — which they’ll then compile into a video to be paired with the song. “We’d like to send messages of hope to Japan from people all over the world. … Go wherever your creativity and heart takes you. It could be as simple as you holding up a sign with ‘#SINGItForJapan’ written on it, or anything else you can dream up,” guitarist Ray Toro wrote on the band’s official site. “From what we’ve seen on tour, we know you guys can dream bigger than we ever could. Don’t be afraid to get your families involved. If you are inspired to do something alone, that’s great too. But we encourage you to get a big group of people from your community together. We want Japan to know just how many people are behind them.” Toro added that the band got the idea after noticing that, in the aftermath of the earthquake and tsunamis that ravaged Japan, fans were sending messages of support to the nation using the hashtag. “After the news of the earthquake and tsunami spread, I did what most people did. I stopped and stared at the TV. I sat at the computer, constantly refreshing CNN in hopes of some good news,” he wrote. “And I went to Twitter to see what people were saying. I noticed a hashtag, ‘SINGItForJapan,’ where you kids were writing messages of hope, saying prayers and sending your condolences and well wishes to survivors. It moved me in a profound way.” The deadline for submissions is Wednesday, March 30, at 8 p.m. ET. There’s no news on just when the band’s new version of “Sing” will be made available, but for more information — and to submit material for #SINGItForJapan — check out My Chemical Romance’s official site . Britney Spears Songwriter Talks ‘Sexy’ Femme Fatale Tune ‘Gasoline’

Claude Kelly says he envisioned Spears as ‘a man-eater’ when he wrote the track for her. By Jocelyn Vena Britney Spears Photo: Eric Charbonneau/ Le Studio/ Wireimage Britney Spears’ Femme Fatale album, due out on Tuesday, is a sexy, dark dance record meant to be played heading to the club, at the club and at the post-party after the club. One of the tracks that exemplifies this is the fiery, Claude Kelly-penned “Gasoline.” Kelly conceived of the searing dance tune while thinking of Britney’s sexiest moments. “The picture that I envisioned in my mind was ‘Toxic,’ ‘Slave 4 U,’ ‘Boys,’ like that kind of [thing where] it’s sexy and it’s hot, sweaty and she’s in a club and she sees a guy,” he explained to MTV News. “That mysterious, exotic look, that whole imagery and that era where she’s a man-eater and all the girls want to be her and all the guys would kill to be with her. I think she pulled it off for sure.” Kelly also wrote the title track off of Spears’ 2008 album, Circus , but this time around he wanted to take things to a new level. “I’m super happy with the way it came out. She sounds fresh and exciting,” he said of the track, which was recorded in L.A. while Kelly was busy working on other projects elsewhere. “For this time, she’s in a place where she wants to be edgier again, so I was like, ‘How am I going to make the word gasoline a cool song?’ ” he recalled. “That’s really the challenge for me and I tried to play off what I know of Britney from the past, from the Blackout era, when she was more mysterious and dark. “The one thing that kind of strings all of [the songs] along is that feeling of edginess and mysterious and sexy and a little bit playful but a little bit dangerous,” he continued. “If you can tap into what she’s in the mood for, which is what happened with ‘Gasoline,’ clearly her mind was in the zone that ‘I want to be edgy.’ ” The party never stops on Femme Fatale , and Kelly is sure that the fans will be happy about that. “The most common thing I hear people say about Britney is ‘I want to dance.’ Girls love to dance to Britney,” he said. “I think people missed that and wanted that … This one was like, ‘Let’s her in the clubs again.’ ” Related Photos Britney Gets Angelic In These Femme Fatale Promo Shots Related Artists Britney Spears

Wiz Khalifa Wants To Rap Over ‘Really Tight’ Mumford & Sons Song

‘Roll Up’ MC tells MTV News he’s a fan of the rock quartet during Spring Break in Las Vegas. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Sway Calloway Sway and Wiz Photo: MTV News Spring Break is a chance for willing college kids to try something new. So in the spirit of the yearly tradition, Wiz Khalifa — one of the performers at MTV’s Spring Break 2011 , along with Snoop Dogg, Pitbull and Lupe Fiasco — spoke to MTV News about experimenting with rhyming. We asked the “Black and Yellow” star whose music he would pick if he could rap over any other artist’s song. “Mumford & Sons, they got a really tight song that I wanna rap over,” Wiz said. “That I would totally rap over if I had the chance to ’cause usually, when I see the video or hear the song, I get it real quick but now I have to ask again. I forgot. [Editor’s note: Wiz is likely referring either to M&S singles “Little Lion Man” or “The Cave.”] “They’re tight and really musical,” he said about the West London quartet. “I like the instruments they use, like bongos. It’s tight and acceptable.” Although Wiz took to the Las Vegas stage joined by his DJ, the Pittsburgh rapper said he also had a band in mind if he needed a crew to back him: the Disco Biscuits. “They’re hard,” he explained. “It’s just sound-y. When you get that vibe and that music, it just feels good and makes you feel a certain way when you hear it.” Khalifa, an MTV News 11 for ’11 pick, is set to celebrate his major-label debut on Tuesday, when Rolling Papers arrives in stores and at online retailers. “We got a couple of surprises along the way to keep people interested,” he told MTV News last month. “But really, other than that, the album is done. We’re really excited. Everyone is excited. [Warner Music Group executive] Lyor [Cohen] came through to a session. I got so much support from the single and going into the album. So when we do drop it, I think we’ll get that response that everyone was expecting.” Catch Wiz performing in Las Vegas during MTV’s Spring Break on Monday night (March 28) on MTV at 9:50 p.m. ET. 30 Seconds To Mars, My Chemical Romance Roll On To Musical March Madness Sweet 16

Linkin Park, Panic! at the Disco also advance, along with underdogs Disturbed and Sum 41 … Sweet 16 voting now open on the Newsroom blog. By James Montgomery My Chemical Romance’s Gerard Way Photo: David Wolff – Patrick/ WireImage Two weeks ago, when we tipped off the 2011 Musical March Madness tournament, sixty-four bands entered the fray with championship dreams on their minds. For 32 of those bands, that dream died after one round. And for half of the remaining 32, the dream is over today. Because we’ve reached the Sweet 16, the midway point on the quest for the 2011 MMM title. And while the bands still left standing would no doubt like a moment to recover from their epic battles, as any tournament vet will tell you, there’s no rest for the weary. From here on out, the challenges only get tougher, and the cost of defeat is high: To come so close and leave empty-handed would be a heartbreaker, indeed.

Swedish House Mafia’s ‘Masquerade Motel’ Takes Over South Beach

Thousands of fans treated to sight and sound spectacular during trio’s Miami Music Week ‘One Night Stand.’ By Akshay Bhansali and Adam Stewart Swedish House Mafia Photo: 2010 Denise Truscello MIAMI — Swedish House Mafia attempted — and executed — a spectacle of mammoth proportions on Miami’s South Beach shore on Saturday. With close to 15,000 masked fans checked in and hundreds of others watching and dancing alongside a massive tent, the house music super-group treated their fans to the nine-hour mini-festival that was “Masquerade Motel: One Night Stand.” While the three Swedes were the headliners, their supporting lineup alone was worth marveling over: Junior Sanchez, A-Trak, Armand Van Helden, Max Vangeli, AN21, Dirty South, and Pete Tong (who also emceed the event) were among the big-name performers. But when it came time for Axwell, Steve Angello and Sebastian Ingrosso to take the stage, it was clear this show would be like no other Miami has seen. The curtain dropped to reveal a massive, 40-foot structure adorned with LED screens, lights, pyro and speakers. And with the trio standing at the center of it all, the crowd exploded. Swedish House Mafia opened with their late-summer 2010 anthem, “Miami 2 Ibiza,” which was followed by “Dynamite,” a new track by Alesso, who was recently signed to Ingrosso’s Refune Record Label. Then followed the stream of new music fans had been eagerly awaiting. SHM dropped a block of fresh tunes, a highlight of which was an off-center, Arabian-style techno monster that the crowd went berserk for, as the guys danced onstage in sync with their fans. Then there was a remix of deadmau5 ‘s “Strobe.” Next was Marco V’s “Reaver” and a mash-up of Angello’s “Show Me Love” and “KNAS,” which kicked the show into overdrive, accompanied by a stunning visual display.
