Questlove Wants Pete Rock To Reconsider Fiasco With Lupe

‘I’m glad that Lupe did it,’ Questlove tells MTV News of Lupe Fiasco’s ‘T.R.O.Y’ sample on his new single ‘Around My Way.’ By Rob Markman Questlove Photo: MTV News Lupe Fiasco took on a ton of criticism this week when he sampled Pete Rock and CL Smooth ‘s “They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)” on his new single, “Around My Way,” but Questlove is in full support of the Chicago MC. “I would hope that Pete would reconsider his position because it’s clearly an homage to his legacy,” the Roots drummer told MTV News on Wednesday. After Fiasco dropped his new single on Tuesday, Pete Rock took to Twitter to chastise Lu and the song’s producers for remaking the song, which he and CL Smooth released back in 1992 as a dedication to their fallen friend and Heavy D & the Boyz group member Troy “Trouble T” Dixon. “I’m not flattered @ all. Dat sh– is wack, and the producer should be ashamed of his f—in self. Smh,” he wrote. On Thursday, a livid Lu phoned into MTV News correspondent Sway Calloway’s “Sway in the Morning” radio show and revealed that he didn’t actually sample Pete Rock’s 1992 “Reminisce,” but instead crafted his track from Tom Scott’s 1967 jazz record “Today.” But he was, in fact, attempting to honor the famed hip-hop producer and Questlove believes that’s a good thing. “I’m certain that people will know that’s ‘T.R.O.Y.’ by Pete Rock and CL Smooth and it will seem familiar to them, and that will give Pete the 20-year resurgence and boost that naturally comes with this type of music,” the Roots maestro reasoned. “I’m glad that Lupe did it because as a DJ, sometimes it’s hard to convince people that are younger than the music that you’re spinning that this is worth dancing to. “I think it’s a good thing. He’ll get over it,” Questlove said. What are your thoughts on Lupe Fiasco’s “Around My Way”? Let us know in the comments. Nicki Minaj Asks Fans To Vote For Next Roman Reloaded Singles

Young Money honey posted three different singles polls on her website on Thursday. By James Dinh Nicki Minaj’s Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded Photo: Universal It’s only been a little more than a week since Nicki Minaj dropped the clip for her Chris Brown collabo “Right by My Side,” but everyone’s favorite Harajuku Barbie is continuing her Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded takeover and needs a little help in selecting her new singles. On Thursday night, Minaj’s website revealed three polls with various options from the sophomore effort. With Roman Reloaded crossing hip-hop and pop genres, Barbz and Kenz have quite a few Minaj stylings to select as their ideal singles. While the first race is between the more mellow pop cuts on the LP (“Marilyn Monroe,” “Fire Burns,” “Young Forever” and “Gun Shot”), the second battle includes tracks that bring out the rapper’s harder alter ego Roman (“Champion,” “HOV Lane” and “I Am Your Leader”). In the last poll, head Barbie has pitted three of her dance anthems against each other (“Pound the Alarm,” “Whip It” and “Va Va Voom”). Shortly after the website posting, Minaj also took to Twitter to urge Team Minaj to sound off in the fun, writing, “Take the poll!!! And leave your comments. Gonna read them now.” At press time, “Marilyn Monroe,” “Champion” and “Va Va Voom” appeared to have the majority of votes. Barbz and Kenz have plenty of reason to be excited, as they’ve been flooded with a string of new singles all year long. Even before the LP hit stores, they were treated to the frenetic “Stupid Hoe,” which saw the Young Money honey taking a cluster of jabs at Lil’ Kim. Strategically releasing cuts to appease her growing fanbase, Minaj went on to the album’s lead single, “Starships,” a RedOne-produced number that was clearly catered to the Top 40 dance craze. And as predicted, the magic worked when the song peaked at #5 on Billboard ‘s Hot 100. Soon after, the femcee balanced out the pop tune with the release of her ode to strippers, “Beez in the Trap.” Most recently, Minaj released the visual for her Chris Brown-assisted R&B jam “Right by My Side,” which also features a cameo love interest by none other than Nas. Regardless of the poll winners, Minaj is already performing many of the cuts on her worldwide Pink Friday Tour, which will hit the States in July. Laurieann Gibson, who serves as the raptress’ choreographer, spoke to MTV News recently about the trek, revealing that it’s something she’s “really, really proud of.” “I love [when] I heard Roman Reloaded. I loved her delivery. I love the way she flows,” Gibson told MTV News . “So the Pink Friday Tour is really good and it’s kind of like a glimpse back to what a real rap show is. It’s intimate but big at the same time.” What do you want Nicki’s next singles to be? Tell us your suggestions below. Related Artists Nicki Minaj

Drake’s Says His Critics ‘Let Me Know That I’m Relevant’

‘It’s important for me to let my fans know I really don’t care. I’m confident,’ Drake tells MTV News of how he deals with constant criticism. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Drake Photo: MTV News Drake understands that no artist is above criticism. So it’s not that Drizzy doesn’t hear his detractors, he just chooses to ignore them. At least that’s what he told MTV News’ Sway Calloway during a May 17 Club Paradise tour stop in Houston, Texas. “There will be days when I walk in an arena and people will cheer and then there might be days when I walk in an arena and people might boo, but it all sounds the same to me because it’s all just noise that lets me know that I’m relevant,” Drake said, sharing some words of wisdom that was given to him by boxing champ Floyd Mayweather. “I don’t get booed,” Drizzy continued. “I don’t face that. I mean he faces that challenge but my challenge is more with social media and open opinions and people just feeling like they need to talk.” Drake’s music, and just about his every move, is dissected through the media as well as on Twitter and blogs. The fact that he sings as well as raps has made him a target for those looking to take away his hip-hop cred. Still, the “Headlines” MC remains one of rap’s most successful draws today. Common called him out the OVO general on “Sweet,” a single from his 2011 album The Dreamer/The Believer . Many also believe that G.O.O.D Music’s Pusha T has also been throwing subliminal jabs at Drake, first on last year’s “Don’t F–k With Me” freestyle, then on his “Sweet” freestyle. Pusha has gone on record saying that he wasn’t dissing Drake and he actually likes the Toronto MC’s music, but after Push dropped his new single “Exodus 23:1,” speculation began to swirl that he was again taking aim and Drake and his mentor Lil Wayne . Weezy responded with a poignant tweet: “F— pusha t and anybody that love em.” It is important to note that when he sat with Sway, Drake did not address Pusha T or any other rappers directly, but he did speak about his detractors in a very general sense. “It’s important for me to let my fans know I really don’t care. I’m confident,” he said sternly. “I love the music I make and the videos I make and the people I associate with and every decision I’ve ever made.” For Drake, taking the stage on each stop of his Club Paradise Tour is all the assurance that he needs. “Just to let [fans] know that I don’t care about anything else outside of this right here,” he said from backstage at Houston’s Toyota Center, referencing the army of fans waiting for him to perform. “That other stuff, hiding behind computers and yip-yapping all day on radio stations, it’s like that’s cool, man, for points and popularity, but at the end of the day, there is still 15,000 people here.” Have you seen Drake’s Club Paradise show yet? Katy Perry Hits Water Park In New ‘Part Of Me’ Clip

‘When we have a day off, she always likes me to explore something fun with her,’ sister Angela Hudson says of Katy in upcoming film. By James Dinh Katy Perry in the trailer for “Part Of Me” Photo: Imagine Entertainment ‘s 3-D docu-concert “Part of Me” will showcase the darker side of the pop darling’s roller-coaster ride to fame, including her divorce from Russell Brand. Still, there will be tons of fun thrown in the mix. In between scenes from her 2011 worldwide California Dreams trek, the July 5 film will also feature footage of the singer’s family, including a water-park outing with her sister. In an almost minute-long teaser clip from the film, Katy’s older sister, Angela Hudson, talks about how she grew up promising to work with Katy “when she made it big.” In between takes of the duo in choir and backstage at concert halls, Angela explains, “My sister, not only does she work hard on tour, but she likes to play hard on tour. “Anytime we go to a city when we have a day off, she always likes me to explore something fun with her,” she continues . With her hit “Firework” serving as appropriate background music, KatyCats catch a glimpse of the Perry sisters basking in the adventures of a water park. But what would any amusement park be without a little action-ride anxiety? Asked how she’s feeling before going on a bungee-jumping ride, the pop star responds, “I feel great. I’m really, really excited about my sister, who is scared of heights.” Unfortunately, Angela doesn’t appear to enjoy the ride as much as Katy thought she would, as the older sis offers cameras a frown. MTV News recently caught up with Perry at the Pepsi Fleet Week “Part of Me” Concert, where the patriotically-dressed songstress told us about how deep the film will take fans. “It’s the most intimate I’ve ever been. I mean that in a non-sexual way … I mean it in a vulnerable way,” she explained. “And so I’m not scared of it because I think it’s important for me, and important these days, for people to not think people in my position are perfect and that if they want to achieve this type of dream or achieve a goal that they have to be flawless. They don’t.” What do you think of the new “Part of Me” clip? Share your opinion in the comment section! Related Videos MTV First: Katy Perry’s ‘Part Of Me’ Related Artists Katy Perry

Ke$ha Gives Flaming Lips Frontman His First-Ever Toe Tattoo

Wayne Coyne talks about what happens when you work with ‘freaks’ like Ke$ha on The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends. By James Montgomery Ke$ha Photo: Getty Images Flaming Lips mastermind Wayne Coyne took away more than just a vial of blood when he traveled to Nashville to record with Ke$ha . (Though, really, you’d think that would be enough.) He also left with his first-ever tattoo … not to mention a newfound respect for the wild-child pop star. “Most of the time, if someone’s willing to work with me, they’re going to be a freak. And Ke$ha … I sort of thought that she would be a freak, I’d heard about her and we’d tried to get a hold of her earlier,” Coyne told MTV News backstage at the Hangout Fest in Gulf Shores, Alabama. “We showed up at her house, and she has a tattoo gun that she gives everyone a tattoo with, so within 20 minutes of being at her house, I had a tattoo on my toe; it’s the only tattoo I’ve ever had. “We were set to do this one song that I had prepared, and we went into the studio that night, and stayed there until about 2 in the morning, and did four songs, just making stuff up,” he continued. “And the next day [we] worked for another couple hours. She’s funny, she’s gracious, she’s imaginative, she’s creative and she’s a lot of fun to be around.” The result of that collaboration (a song called “2012”) shows up on the Lips’ special Record Store Day double-LP, The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends, a thoroughly out-there collection of songs and sound-collages that — as the title implies — the band recorded with the likes of Bon Iver, Nick Cave, Neon Indian, Yoko Ono and, uh, Coldplay’s Chris Martin … to name just a few. But will fans get to hear even more of the Flaming Lips/Ke$ha team-up? Well, Coyne certainly hopes so. “We really loved making this music together — I think I’ve probably done six or seven songs with her — and I know a lot of her fans like [‘2012′], but I don’t know if we’ll put more songs out there,” he said. “She has other agendas besides doing music with Wayne, you know, but I hope so, because I think it’s really great, crazy, unexpected music. And she, to her credit, loves what we do. She wants it to be whatever. She has no limits of what she wants it to be.” And don’t think the Heady Fwends sessions will be the last time Coyne and Ke$ha share time (or blood) in the studio. If anything, the Lips’ recent output of, uh, non-traditional releases — songs encased in gummy skulls and fetuses, 24-hour noise-jam freakouts that play for all eternity , limited-edition vinyl filled with actual blood, etc — suggests Coyne and Co. are just getting started … and they’re going to get even weirder before they’re finished. “That’s been the beautiful thing about all of these weird collaborations and projects; you work with freaks. Even working with someone like Chris Martin, he’s very open to, like, ‘Let’s do stuff!’ That’s the great surprise about it,” Coyne said. “I don’t think people are surprised when we work with a group like Lightning Bolt or Neon Indian — people think of us as like-minded — but the surprising thing with the Chris Martins or the Ke$has, they’re like us too, they just don’ play music that sounds like that all the time.” Related Artists The Flaming Lips Ke$ha

New ‘Breaking Dawn’ Posters Are Here!

Fans unlocked three new posters of Bella, Edward and Jacob after an Internet scavenger hunt. By Kara Warner Bella’s “Breaking Dawn – Part 2” poster Photo: Summit Entertainment “Twilight” fans received an early Christmas gift Thursday (May 24) in the form of three brand-new posters for “Breaking Dawn – Part 2.” Even better, the creative forces at Summit Entertainment released the posters through a scavenger hunt that required fans to visit their favorite fan sites. Fans were tasked with finding clues within the text, which led to another web site with a scrambled word that had to be unscrambled in order to unlock the posters. Unsurprisingly, the dedicated and Internet-savvy fans were quick to acquire the “keys” to unlocking the posters. Each poster features a close-up, artsy photo of one of the franchise’s three biggest stars: Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner. Pictured in character, they all stare fiercely into the camera. The only word on the posters is “Forever,” which seems to be a direct nod to the final words in Stephenie Meyer’s conclusion to her Twilight Saga. Fans seem most delighted to see Bella’s new vampire eyes, which are almost blood-red in the pic, a nice contrast to the amber color of Edward’s eyes. Here is a collection of the expectedly ecstatic reactions on the official Twilight Facebook page : “Love them!” commented fan Tweedy Sita Mahe. “And I love how they have their own poster. Pusha T Has Become ‘A Student’ Of The-Dream

‘I’ve learned so much about song structure from Dream,’ G.O.O.D. Music MC tells MTV News from his studio. By Nadeska Alexis, with reporting by Rahman Dukes The-Dream and Pusha T Photo: MTV News Pusha T is laser-focused on his debut album at the moment, trying to craft a cohesive musical project. But if you thought the G.O.O.D. Music signee would hole up in the studio with his boss, Kanye West, think again. Over the weekend, MTV News caught up with Pusha in Atlanta, where he was in the studio working closely with The-Dream. The two first linked up when producer RicoBeats sent one of Push’s tracks to Dream for a feature and eventually collaborated on a few more things. In addition to lending his vocals to the album, The-Dream has been guiding Pusha through the recording process, helping him take his work to a new level. “It really started with this beat [from] Rico. We were like, ‘Yo, Dream would just sound amazing on the record, period.’ So we sent it out and it came back so quick. Dream was like, ‘Man this is one of the ones,’ ” Pusha recalled. “Personally, I never thought the record was going to come back that quickly. I was in New Orleans somewhere and Rico was like, ‘Aye! Dream did it — he on the phone!” I thought, “OK, wait a minute this might really be something.” Pusha wouldn’t reveal exactly how many tracks the two had banked together, but he explained why the R&B singer/producer is the perfect fit for this album. “Musicality, to me in general, is missing, but [Dream] is a musician, he’s a fundamentalist. I’ve really taken on the student role,” Pusha continued. “I feel like I’m in with the best of the best. You’ve got Dream on one end, you’ve got Kanye on another end, and you can learn so much. I really look at myself as just a rapper’s rapper, but I’ve learned so much about song structure from Dream. ‘This is the most I’ve ever rewritten,” he added. “I wrote the ‘Automatic’ record, sent it to Dream, and he was like, ‘Aye, you rapping too damn much,’ and I’m like, ‘OK.’ How [would you not] listen to the writer of everything? How [would you not] listen to the producer of everything?” The-Dream was just as enthusiastic about working with Pusha on the album. “I always personally felt like he was one of the best at what he did, period,” Dream said. [There’s] lots of guys that are great from a rap standpoint, but in songs they’re not as great. Sometimes [you need to say], ‘Hey, move this part here and this is your hook,’ or ‘Let’s write about this, or let’s tap that emotion and let’s not rap past the emotion of where it is.’ ” For the producer, who has banked countless hits for stars like Rihanna and Beyonc

Carrie Underwood Repeats As Billboard Champ

Blown Away #1 again as Adele moves back up to #2. By Gil Kaufman Carrie Underwood’s Blown Away Album Cover Photo: Arista Just as the 11th season of “American Idol” is wheezing to a close
, the top three contenders can take some heart in the fact that former champ Carrie Underwood is still at the top of her game. Underwood’s latest, Blown Away , will spend a second week at the top of the Billboard 200 charts thanks to sales of 120,000, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan. Though sales were down 55 percent, that was enough to edge out a resurgent Adele , who may have benefitted from the Mother’s Day Bump for her unstoppable 21 , which was up 31 percent and two spots to #2 on sales of 101,000. That holiday push helped lift Adele over the 9 million mark in the U.S., with diamond status now well within reach. The rest of the top 10 was fairly stable, with buzz band Silversun Pickups landing an impressive debut at #6 with their third full-length studio album, Neck of the Woods , while Tank rumbled in at #9 with This is How I Feel (33,000). The rest of the top 10: Lionel Richie continues his remarkable late-career roll with Tuskegee , which moved up three spots to #3 (71,000) as sales passed the 750,000 mark. NOW 42 held in at #4 (65,000), followed by Norah Jones , Little Broken Hearts (60,000), One Direction , Up All Night (#7, 40,000), Jack White , Blunderbuss (#8, 34,000) and Luke Bryan , Tailgates & Tanlines (#10, 26,000). It was a swift trip in, and out, of the top 10 for B.o.B , whose Strange Clouds fell seven spots in week two to #12 as sales dipped by 67 percent to 25,000. Further down the line, British soft rockers Keane were in at #17 with Strangeland (19,000), while “SNL” musical guests and Internet sensations Karmin snuck into the top 20 at #18 with their debut EP, Hello (19,000). Underwood also topped the iTunes album chart, acing out Silversun Pickups, who were followed by Adele, B.o.B, One Direction, Karmin, Keane, Gotye ‘s Making Mirrors , White and Jones. On the iTunes singles chart, Maroon 5 locked down #1 with “Payphone,” beating out Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used to Know,” Carly Rae Jepsen ‘s “Call Me Maybe,” Justin Bieber ‘s “Boyfriend” and fun. ‘s “We Are Young.” Flo Rida was at #6 with “Wild Ones,” Nicki Minaj just behind with “Starships,” then One Direction’s “What Makes You Beautiful,” Jennifer Lopez ‘s “Dance Again” and 2 Chainz ‘s “No Lie.” The top 10 will get shaken up next week with the arrival of Adam Lambert ‘s second major-label album, as well as new discs from Beach House , Godsmack , the “Glee” Cast Graduation album and the newest slab of rockitude from Tenacious D .
