Ne-Yo Promises ‘Theatrical’ AMA Performance

Singer says four-song set will ‘pretty much tell the full story of [his album] Libra Scale. ‘ By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by Matt Elias Ne-Yo Photo: MTV News When Ne-Yo hits the stage at the American Music Awards on Sunday, the singer/songwriter will have some big promises to fulfill. MTV News caught up with the Libra Scale crooner on Friday during the rehearsals for the main event, and he said his upcoming set will be more than just the typical song-and-dance routine. “The performance for the AMAs is gonna be a bit more theatrical than just getting onstage and singing a song and having some dancers back you up,” Ne-Yo said. He added that the performance will incorporate many of the concepts found on his forthcoming effort. “There’s a storyline that flows through the entire album,” he said. “So we’re basically trying to take the story of Libra Scale and summarize it into about four minutes and put it on stage for you.” While he didn’t give up too many details, the songsmith did break down the set list, which includes a spankin’ new track from Libra. “What I will say is that we’re gonna be doing a medley. There’s four songs in total in this whole four-minute performance. We go from ‘Champagne Life’ into ‘One in a Million’ into one of the … newer songs off the album called ‘Telekinesis’ into, of course, ‘Beautiful Monster’ to end it all off,” he said. Ne-Yo also hoped to turn the performance into a sales boost. “Through these four songs we have figured out a way to pretty much tell the full story of Libra Scale ,” he said. “Or leave people just intrigued enough to go get the album when it comes out.” As an AMA vet, Ne-Yo was also looking forward to not only throwing down on stage, but just checking out the star-packed event and enjoying himself. “One of the cool things about the AMAs is the fact that there’s so many different genres crammed into one fantastic night,” he said. “You can get a little bit of R&B, a little bit of hip-hop, a little bit of country. Me being a person that’s very versatile in my musical choices and tastes, this is the perfect show for me. I enjoy coming. This is my … fourth or fifth time and it never gets old. I’m gonna have a good time.” What are you expecting from Ne-Yo’s performance at the AMAs? Let us know in the comments! Pusha T Says Cryptic ‘So Appalled’ Verse Is ‘Self-Explanatory’

Clipse MC opens up about apparent reference to incarcerated ex-manager on Kanye West track, on ‘RapFix Live.’ By Alvin Blanco Pusha T Photo: Sohyung Kang/MTV News Pusha T has been getting plenty of mainstream recognition lately thanks to his G.O.O.D. Music co-sign and standout guest appearances on Kanye West’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. When the younger half of Virginia rhyme duo the Clipse dropped by “Rap Fix Live” on Thursday, he opened up about trips to Hawaii to craft “Runaway” with ‘Ye , but he also talked about brother and rhyme partner Malice as well as his incarcerated former manager. “Everybody knows that we’ve been through the wringer as far as the whole music and the whole street situation,” Pusha said. “Our family, our management, our friends. I lost five of my closest friends in ’09; like 30 years, 15 years [in prison] or better. A lot of what you see me doing right now is just so that none of that goes in vain, [like], I’mma show y’all that this is not in vain.” Pusha’s onetime manager Anthony “Geezy” Gonzalez was charged in 2009 with leading a $10 million drug-trafficking ring and sentenced to 32 years in prison. Asked whether a lyric from West’s “So Appalled” (“I speak of gospel, hostile/ Tony doing time for what he did to nostrils”) referred to Gonzalez, Pusha, who has typically been guarded about his ex-manager in the press, would only say, “That’s self-explanatory.” According to Pusha, it was the instrumental for “So Appalled” that inspired him to deliver such a spirited verse. “It’s Kanye, the beat brings the ghost out of you,” he said. The Virginia MC gave an update about Malice, who he said has been busy preparing for the release of his memoir, “Wretched, Pitiful, Poor, Blind, and Naked,” with a provocative series of vlogs that include excerpts from the book. “People always say the dichotomy of the Clipse is, I’m the more brash one and Malice is the more introspective one, and [those are] the roles we play in the group,” Pusha explained. “But when you take Malice out of the group and you sit him down and he talks to you, well, writing to you in this book, it’s not rhyming, it’s just these are his words, these are his thoughts, these are his experiences. I think people are going to be blown away by this guy’s mind.” What do you think of Pusha’s verse on “So Appalled”? Share your reviews in the comments. Far East Movement Thank Fans For ‘Like A G6’ Success

MTV News informs the Los Angeles band that their hit single has achieved double-platinum status. By James Dinh Far East Movement Photo: MTV News Far East Movement must be feeling pretty fly right about now. Not only has their club anthem “Like a G6” conquered the Billboard Hot 100 once again, but the song has also reached double-platinum status. MTV News caught up with the electro-rap group, and they thanked fans for their hugely successful debut single. “Whoa. We just found out on MTV News that we hit double-platinum on ‘Like a G6,’ ” Kev Nish told MTV News. “Thank you. We’re grateful to that. That means a lot of people across America are feeling fly and like a G6 and getting slizzard, so thank you guys.” Back in September, the quartet spoke to MTV News about the inspiration behind their breakthrough single. “A G6 is not a Gatorade flavor. It’s not a car, convertible, four-door. It’s not a watch,” Nish explained. “But Drake, Drake talks about having G4 pilots on deck, so we said, ‘What’s flyer than a G4?’ Of course, it would be a G6.” After the band recorded the party anthem, which features the Cataracs and Dev, they immediately went on tour. Without having time in between, FM put the track on a mixtape and uploaded it online. Little did they know that “G6” would spawn legions of fans online. “We came back about three months later, and on YouTube, we had, like, a million hits, so it seems like the people were speaking,” Prohgress said. Far East Movement got started in 2003, but it wasn’t until this year that they released their major-label debut, Free Wired. The LP was released October 12 and features a slew of collaborations with Snoop, Lil Jon and One Republic frontman Ryan Tedder. Have you downloaded “Like a G6” yet? Tell us in the comments! The documentary “My Time Now” follows the rap diva while she records her debut LP, Pink Friday, and shows fans rarely seen sides of the hard-edged hip-hop vixen as she reflects on her challenging past and faces her future as a potential hip-hop icon. The film will premiere Sunday, November 28, at 10 p.m. ET/PT on MTV, and fans can also check out the project on all of the MTV platforms, with exclusive previews on MTVNews.com and RapFix.MTV.com in the days leading up to the flick’s debut. On Friday (November 19), MTV’s “The Seven” hooked Minaj’s Barbie army up with an exclusive look at the doc. In the scene, the Young Money lyricist reflects on her long journey to the top and recalls getting fired from five waitressing jobs and gigs as a customer-service rep and an office manager. “I’ve been led down a lot of dead-end roads,” the hip-hop star says candidly, while footage of Minaj on the set of her “Right Thru Me” video plays. But she maintains that she held fast to her dream and told doubters that they will see big things from the Queens native. Over the course of the hour-long doc — filmed over three months — the spitter will also be seen buying her mother a spankin’-new house, sounding off on music-industry politics and gearing up for her performance of “Check It Out” with will.i.am during the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards pre-show . Viewers will also gain insight into Minaj’s personal life, when cameras follow the MC on an emotional trip back to Trinidad and watch her reconnect with family she hasn’t seen in seven years but who have been following the “Your Love” lyricist’s rise to the top. The pink wigs and alter egos are gone as Minaj treats her family to shopping trips, braves throngs of screaming fans, remembers beloved kin she had to leave behind and recalls life as a young girl on the island with storybook ideas of the American dream. “I am amazed at what I’ve seen in this film,” Nicki Minaj said in a statement. “For the first time people will see Onika. That’s all I’ve ever wanted. To inspire. To encourage. To replace doubt and fear with fearlessness and hope. MTV and the incredible film crew behind this documentary has made a very special dream come true. This film is my heart & soul. The visual component to Pink Friday. My fans are the most incredible humans on this planet. Words could never translate my gratitude. Thank you for standing by me. Young Money MC says his project with Bieber may even become an EP. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by James “FLX” Smith Lil Twist Photo: MTV News Justin Bieber has already received the seal of approval of Kanye West , Ludacris and Drake . And he impressed many with a video in which he raps over Vado and Cam’ron’s “Speaking in Tungs” last month. Now Bieber is taking the next step to proving his crossover potential: working on a mixtape with of Young Money rapper and fellow teen Lil Twist . “Me and Justin are working on this mixtape,” Twist confirmed to MTV News. “We probably gonna title it Best of Both Worlds, [or] Best of Young Rap, Best of Young Pop. We got a few records done. The recent record that was talked about was ‘Billionaire.’ We did ‘Billionaire’ by Travie McCoy and Bruno Mars. We gonna get ready to leak that out. We’re gonna leak something real soon.” Any further details about when more music from the twosome might drop is still very TBD. “I don’t have the date on the mixtape yet, because we’re still working hard on it,” the MC explained. “We’re trying to get new beats, because now, like, some of the beats [that we’ve used] are old. … So we’re gonna get new beats and go back in and try and make an EP.” The idea of the two working on some music together was really an idea Bieber came up with, Twist explained. “Me and Justin, we actually met through a mutual friend and after that we got real cool actually,” he recalled. “[We] started working in the studio, sending stuff through the Mac book and everything. And then he was like, ‘Yo, bro, we should do a mixtape. Let’s go.’ We just started then.” Related Artists Lil Twist Justin Bieber

La Roux Singer Can’t Hear Her Voice On Kanye West’s ‘All Of The Lights’

‘It’s not the kind of thing where you can pick it out … but apparently it’s there!’ Elly Jackson laughs to MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena La Roux’s Elly Jackson Photo: MTV News If you listen closely, you just might hear La Roux’s leading lady, Elly Jackson, on Kanye West’s massive My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy track “All of the Lights.” And if you do hear her voice on there, you might want to give her a call because, frankly, she can’t hear it herself. “I came to New York, and I did a couple of days in the studio with him,” she told MTV News. “He got me to layer up all these vocals with other people, and he just basically wanted to use his favorite vocalists from around the world to create this really unique vocal texture on his record, but it’s not the kind of thing where you can pick it out. I don’t have a verse or anything. I can’t actually hear my voice on it,” she laughed. “But apparently it’s there!” There are quite a few artists on the track — including Rihanna, Alicia Keys, John Legend, The-Dream, Fergie, Kid Cudi, Elton John (on piano), Ryan Leslie, Charlie Wilson and Tony Williams — and Jackson made sure to get a little something out of Kanye for her vocal duties. “He had been kind of trying to get in touch with us over three months, I think over the summer. And well, obviously, we’d got his calls and stuff, but it was a bit difficult to get our schedules to meet up, so it just took awhile for us to do anything,” she recalled. “And then he said, ‘I’d really love you to sing.’ He was like, ‘Straight up, I want you to sing on the record.’ “And I was like, ‘Well, we’d love for you to do a remix to ‘In for the Kill.’ It’s great. It gets us on different radio and it gets us to a different audience, which is a great thing for any artist,” she said, describing it as a “scratching-each-other’s-back type of situation, which was really nice.” Can you hear Elly on “All of the Lights”? Enrique Iglesias To Perform ‘Raunchier’ New Single At AMAs

The pop star says ‘Tonight’ is ‘a little bit dirtier’ than his previous songs. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Matt Elias Enrique Iglesias rehearses for the AMAs on Thursday in Los Angeles Photo: Kevin Winter/ AMA2010/ Getty Images Enrique Iglesias will be making quite the statement when he takes the stage to perform at the American Music Awards on Sunday. The Spanish pop star will not only be singing his “Jersey Shore”-approved hit single, “I Like It,” but also his much naughtier new tune, “Tonight.” For those not familiar with the club jam, “Tonight” finds Iglesias making a very interesting offer to a lady, as he sings, “Please excuse me/ I don’t mean to be rude/ But tonight I’m f—ing you.” There’s really no subtext in the tune. “I’m singing my new single, which is called ‘Tonight,’ and it features Ludacris,” the singer explained to MTV News at his AMA rehearsal on Thursday. “It’s a little bit dirtier and raunchier than the things I’ve done in the past, but I like it. That’s what I feel. I felt good about it.” Most certainly, Iglesias will change the song’s catchphrase to the radio-approved “Tonight I’m loving you.” Regardless of the edit, he explained that the tune’s risqu

Justin Bieber, Ke$ha, Katy Perry Pick Up Platinum Certifications

Releases by Black Eyed Peas, Rihanna, B.o.B, Bruno Mars also recognized by recording-industry organization RIAA. By James Montgomery Justin Bieber Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ Getty Images On Wednesday, the Recording Industry Association of America handed out their latest round of gold and platinum certifications … and if your name was Ke$ha or Justin Bieber, well, then it was a very good day for you. Ke$ha’s Animal was certified gold (meaning it passed the 500,000-sales mark) and a spate of her digital singles went multiplatinum, with “Tik Tok” being downloaded more than 5 million times and “Your Love Is My Drug” racking up another 2 million. “Blah Blah Blah” and “Take It Off” both were certified gold, meaning that, all told, she’s sold more than 8.5 million downloads to date. Bieber earned his first-ever multiplatinum award, as the RIAA certified sales of his My World 2.0 album at more than 2 million copies. “Baby,” his team-up with Ludacris, also was certified as double platinum. Wednesday also was a great day to be the Black Eyed Peas, as their massive tune “I Gotta Feeling” was certified 6-times platinum (that’s more than 6 million downloads) — making it the RIAA’s highest-ever digital-song certification. Following (somewhat) close behind the Peas were the likes of Katy Perry, B.o.B, Taio Cruz and Rihanna, who had their respective mega singles “California Gurls,” “Airplanes,” “Break Your Heart” and “Don’t Stop the Music” certified as triple platinum. Perry and Rihanna also each picked up a double-platinum certification — for “Teenage Dream” and “Rude Boy,” respectively — bringing their total hauls to more than 5 million units sold. The Bruno Mars track “Just the Way You Are” was certified platinum, giving the crooner his very first solo plaque. B.o.B’s “Magic” and former “American Idol” champ Kris Allen’s “Live Like We’re Dying” also picked up platinum certifications. Related Artists Justin Bieber Ke$ha Katy Perry

Ultra Music Festival Blames Winter Music Conference For Scheduling Conflict

Fans, artists remain unsure of March plans because of rival dates for Miami electronic dance music events. By Adam Stewart Winter Music Conference 2010 Photo: MTV News The ongoing debate between the Winter Music Conference and the Ultra Music Festival is beginning to morph into a strange amalgamation of a boxing match and a presidential election. Each side has spoken its initial case, and now both are in the midst of a battle to secure artists, events and the masses of fans that come along with them. While choosing not to respond to the breach-of-contract claims alleged by Winter Music Conference officials, the Ultra Music Festival did begin to address some of the other looming questions regarding the awkwardly disjointed Miami dates. In a press release posted on the UMF website Thursday, UMF officials claim that the factors leading to the festival dates falling outside of WMC week were completely out of their control, implying that WMC organizers — who’ve scheduled their festival to begin March 8, a full two weeks earlier than expected — are the ones to blame. In a press release posted Wednesday evening, WMC organizers admitted they chose their conference dates based strictly on venue availability, which will for the first time land them at the Miami Beach Convention Center. According to the Miami Beach Convention Center website, the facilities were not available during the last week in March due to another large-scale event. Bill Kelly, owner and co-founder of WMC, told MTV News that the Convention Center was someplace they had always hoped to be, due not only to its prime South Beach location, but also its ability to accommodate the conference’s expanding size. But Ultra sees this claim as nothing more than an excuse used by WMC, which has intentionally detached itself from UMF. Ultra organizers insist that they “aligned [themselves] with every contact and resource [they had in] Miami Beach to try and secure a host hotel [for WMC].” Kelly claims that WMC officials did their best to find an accommodating location during the last week in March but came up empty-handed. Additionally — and as first reported by MTV News on Thursday — UMF officials validated speculation that its inability to move its three-day event to within the official WMC time frame was a direct result of the massive Calle Ocho street fair, which takes place on March13. UMF confirmed that its hope to align dates with WMC week “was rendered impossible by the City of Miami police department as they [would] not have the resources to host Ultra Music Festival and Calle Ocho in Miami on the same weekend.” WMC reminds us that the dates and locations of its conference have varied considerably over its 26-year run, falling between February and late March with locations between Fort Lauderdale and Miami. Conversely, Ultra officials insist that in recent years, the electronic dance music industry as a whole has come to recognize and embrace the last week of March as the true WMC week, and that many of the artists’ tour schedules have already assumed the late March dates. “Large-scale events and festivals traditionally do not move their dates around year to year,” says the Ultra statement, adding that “a move like this [should] have to be done well over a year in advance to allow time for proper planning.” So what does this mean for the hundreds of thousands of bewildered fans who feel left out in the rain? Some new information suggests there is the potential for two epic music- and party-saturated weeks in the Miami sun. Thursday afternoon, the Miami New Times contested an MTV News report in which Club Space owner Louis Puig claimed the City of Miami Beach would not issue pool and beach party permits outside of the official WMC dates. Upon further investigation, Miami Beach official Max Sklar told MTV News that the city “considers a number of different factors before approving or denying an application.” He went on to explain that the “special-event permit approvals are not based on whether the event occurs during [WMC].” That said, the dozens of pool and beach parties that traditionally take over the Collins Avenue hotels now have some serious decisions to make and potential allegiances to declare. Online EDM retailer Beatport has thrown one of the premier must-see WMC pool and beach parties each year since its launch and is just one of the many entities faced with this difficult and potentially costly decision. “We throw our free Miami parties and events to connect the DJs we love with as many hard-core fans as possible,” says Beatport CEO Matt Adell. “The fracturing of some of the other events across the entire month of March certainly complicates our planning, as I am sure it does for thousands of others. We are working on a revised plan for Miami in March and will share it with the community as soon as it is fully baked.” Who will side with whom in the WMC/UMF debate? Let us know in the comments below! And be sure to check in at MTVNews.com for the latest on the unfolding situation.

Russell Brand Won’t Face Charges In Paparazzi Case

Prosecutors have decided to drop the case, stemming from the actor’s September altercation with a photographer. By Gil Kaufman Russell Brand Photo: Eric Charbonneau/ WireImage Chivalry is not dead. Two months after Russell Brand was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport for getting into a scuffle with a paparazzo who he claimed was trying to take upskirt pics of “The Tempest” actor’s then-wife-to-be, singer Katy Perry, Brand learned on Wednesday that he likely will not face sanctions in the incident. According to the Associated Press , Brand and his lawyers met with prosecutor s on Wednesday in Los Angeles and city attorney spokesperson Frank Mateljan said the legal officials decided not to pursue charges. Brand had been facing a potential misdemeanor simple battery charge in the September 17 incident, which was caught on video. The couple, on the way to Las Vegas for Perry’s bachelorette party, were besieged by paparazzi in the Delta Airlines terminal and Brand was caught on tape as he swatted at a photographer and hit his camera. Brand was arrested and later released on $20,000 bail. According to Mateljan, a prosecutor is slated to meet with the photographer involved in the altercation — who placed Brand under citizen’s arrest after the scuffle — on Friday (November 19). While the prosecutor’s office could still file a case against Brand after the meeting, Mateljan said “it doesn’t seem likely.” Married life appears to have mellowed the once infamously out-of-control British actor. He recently told Us Weekly that his marriage to Perry is “just normal” and not what you might expect from two young stars constantly in the spotlight. “The other day, I put a shirt on, and she went … ‘You’re wearing that shirt, are you?’ I thought, ‘That’s actually happening?’ That’s a thing off a sitcom,” he said. “That happened in my actual life. I wasn’t allowed to wear it. If she says don’t wear that shirt, I don’t wear it.” Related Photos Lovebirds: Katy Perry And Russell Brand Related Artists Russell Brand Katy Perry
