Bruno Mars’ ‘Grenade’ Video: The Passion Of The Crooner

Singer/songwriter thinks outside the box in clever new clip. By James Montgomery Bruno Mars in his “Grenade” music video Photo: Elektra Records Bruno Mars is sort of like Meat Loaf, only without limits: He would do anything for love, including — but not limited to — catching a grenade, putting his hand on a blade, leaping in front of a train, being shot in the brain and, of course, dragging a piano all around Greater Los Angeles . That last one doesn’t rhyme, because it’s not supposed to. It’s the basic premise of Mars’ brand-new “Grenade” video, which finds the diminutive crooner shouldering the load (literally) for love, lugging an upright piano over freeways, through tunnels, past some serious gangbangers (and one mean-ass pit bull) and against traffic to serenade his special lady friend. Of course, by the time he makes it to her house, she’s already found her way into the arms of another man, which disheartens Mars to such a degree that he sets himself (and his piano) down in front of a speeding train. After all, not only is he a man of his word, but as he proves over the course of the video, he’s not exactly opposed to a dramatic gesture either. Credit is due to Mars for thinking outside the rather rote, pop&B box when it came time to make the “Grenade” video. After all, it would’ve been easy — and expected — to make something slick, sexy and/or saccharine, a glossy thing where he croons from a rooftop somewhere, removes his shirt, and somehow ends up with the girl. None of that happens here. Rather, we see Mars struggling and sweating, being taunted and tempted, falling and rising again (there is something oddly “Passion of the Christ” about his ordeal). He ends up alone, unloved. He probably gets flattened by a train. It is sort of sad, really. With “Grenade,” Bruno Mars further distances himself from his smoove-crooning contemporaries, and he does it simply by being real. Really dramatic, really emotional, really clever. This one’s a winner, even if, at the end of it, Mars has lost everything. That’s the price you pay for falling in love. What did you think of the “Grenade” video? Let us know in the comments! Kanye West Pushed For ‘More Douche Bag’ On ‘Runaway,’ Pusha T Recalls

Clipse MC breaks down the making of the Yeezy track on ‘RapFix Live.’ By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by Sway Calloway Pusha T Photo: Sohyung Kang/MTV News Sometimes, there is a certain element that can take a song to another level, and according to Pusha T, Kanye West had a very specific idea about the secret ingredient needed to make “Runaway” a memorable track. The G.O.O.D. Music MC recently revealed to MTV News that ‘Ye was adamant about packing as many “douche bags” into their collaboration as possible. “I’m writing a verse, and I come back to the table, and it’s something that I’m feeling, and he’s like, ‘Naw, but I need more douche bag.’ And I’m like, ‘All right, man, c’mon.’ So I go back, and he’s like, ‘Naw, more douche bag!’ He’s screaming at me ‘more douche bag’ at this point,” Push said during his “RapFix Live” interview Thursday (November 18) about crafting the douche-bag-toasting standout from ‘Ye’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. “I just really had to, like, take myself out of it a little bit and then put … the perspective of the guy … who thinks he can fix it, but he’s not being preventative.” Push said the song developed organically but that Yeezy had unexpectedly stumbled upon a subject the Clipse MC was very familiar with: the art of douche-baggery. “It starts from a conversation. We’re talking, and he’s like, ‘I like your perspective on that. Put a verse to that.’ What he didn’t know was [that] I was going through my own relationship turmoil at the time,” Push revealed. “I was being a douche bag,” he said, adding, vaguely, that he was doing “whatever wrong you can do” in a relationship. Although the concept arose naturally enough, Push said ‘Ye was relentless about making the final product just right. “I’ve never worked with anybody like him,” Push said. “He just pushes you and pushes you and pushes you. With ‘Runaway,’ I think I wrote that four times.” While Yeezy lab sessions had their moments of intensity, Push said developing a partnership with the G.O.O.D. Music impresario easily grew out of an excursion to West’s tropical outpost. “It started from a three-day trip to Hawaii,” he said of becoming a part of the G.O.O.D. Music fold. “It was supposed to be a three-day trip, [and] it ended up being a month, just collaborating on his album. The ‘Runaway’ song was done, a couple of the G.O.O.D. Friday joints were done. ‘So Appalled’ was done. It was just a vibe thing. We got in there, and we just started vibing.” Push said Yeezy was also confident that joining forces with the Virginia spitter would be a partnership with the potential to shut down the game — or at least the 2010 MTV VMA stage , where the pair premiered the record. “He was just [like], ‘You know we about to kill this, right? It’s about to be a real problem. This is gonna be, like, one of the biggest moments right now,’ ” Push remembered. “He was like, ‘C’mon, the record’s crazy, I’m debuting it here. When people see us together, we about to shock. We about to hurt some people.’ ” What do you think a recording session with Kanye West would be like? Let us know in the comments! Lil Wayne Collaborators Partners-N-Crime Building Buzz Beyond Bayou

New Orleans duo talk to Mixtape Daily about linking up with Lil Wayne, YMCMB crew as they prep Legendary LP. By Jayson Rodriguez Partners In Crime Photo: NOLA Fire Starter: Partners-N-Crime OK, so these guys might not exactly be new jacks, but Partners-N-Crime are still on the come up. After building an extensive catalog and collaborations with the likes of Lil Wayne, the New Orleans duo are expanding their fanbase. Riding the wave of their new banger “Finally Could Breathe,” featuring Young Money president Mack Maine, Kango Slim and Mista Meana are currently hard at work on their 10th project, Legendary, set to drop next year. It’s an effort they once would have been hard pressed to put together, when their camps warring with each other years ago. “When we were coming up in the game, Wayne was a little bit younger than us,” Slim told Mixtape Daily. “We were on a label at the time called Big Boy and he was with Cash Money Records. And to be honest, both of the labels had a rivalry thing going on. Once Cash Money blew, Big Boy continued to do their thing. They housed Mystikal, Fiend, us, and a couple more artists. At one time, we never looked eye to eye, but as we grew older things began to change.” Wayne helped break the ice when he reached out to the underground vets a couple of years ago offering to record a track together. (The group was also, at one point, signed to former Cash Money member Juvenile’s label.) Partners-N-Crime sent Weezy something they were working on, a rockish number called “We Do What We Want To,” which eventually landed on their last set, We Are Legend. The superstar MC liked what he heard and contributed a verse. (“This was a little bit before he got into the same type of music with Rebirth, ” Meana recalled.) The result was a raucous anthem that helped to push PNC beyond their bayou borders. Before finishing up their Legendary collection, the group is next scheduled to perform at BAM’s 2010 Next Wave Festival in Brooklyn, New York, as part of the Red Hot + New Orleans lineup. Joe Budden Credits Eminem With Slaughterhouse’s Detroit Love

New Jersey MC says Em’ is just one of the most supportive hip-hop people that I’ve met.’ By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by Rahman Dukes Joe Budden Photo: MTV News At the Detroit stops of Jay-Z and Eminem’s Home and Home Tour , there was undeniable crowd support for another hip-hop crew: rap supergroup Slaughterhouse. The team’s New Jersey representative Joe Budden credits a lot of the Midwest love not only to group member and Detroit native Royce Da 5’9″, but also to the support the collective has received from Motor City megastar Eminem. “We get a lot of support out there in the D,” Budden told MTV News. “I attribute a lot of it to just Royce and Em.” Budden said that, despite Eminem’s superstar status, he still has love for the purest elements of the hip-hop art form. The Mood Muzik spitter said Slaughterhouse stand for those same rap essentials, which endears the foursome to the hip-hop luminary. “Em, to be as successful as he is, and I’ll just tell this to anybody with two ears, or one ear for that matter, is just one of the most supportive hip-hop people that I’ve met,” he said. “He’s really, really just into hip-hop and rap and lyrics. He’s just really into all of the things that group was built around.” Although Eminem and the Slaughterhouse crew see eye-to-eye creatively, bringing Budden, Royce, Crooked I and Joell Ortiz into the Shady fold has been an ongoing saga. Earlier this year, Ortiz spoke with MTV News about finalizing a deal with Em. “We in the ninth inning of it, we just keep changing pitchers,” the Brooklyn MC said in May. “I don’t know, man — it’s a lot of hold-ups. I thought on my end I was straight, but I wasn’t. We’re going back and forth with the people I’m working with. Joe [Budden] had some issues or whatever. The interest is still there. Everybody is excited about it; it’s just a lot of people involved in this. Four artists, four separate managers, label situations — a lot of black and white that gotta get settled for it to happen, but verbally, we’re on Shady! Eminem is excited, the whole group is excited. The world is excited. I can’t even do a show without somebody asking that. Without them being, ‘You ripped it, what’s up with Em?’ Everybody is waiting on this, so it’s going to happen. It’s going to happen.” What do you think about Joe Budden’s thoughts about Eminem? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Joe Budden Eminem Slaughterhouse

Atomic Tom Rock Thrillist.com Birthday Bash

Brooklyn band’s NYC club performance of its viral hit ‘Take Me Out’ got partygoers dancing, singing along. By Rya Backer Atomic Tom’s Luke White Photo: MTV News Wednesday night at Manhattan’s Le Poisson Rouge nightclub, lifestyle website Thrillist.com celebrated its fifth birthday. The milestone was rung in with ample friends, liquor sponsors and a performance by Atomic Tom — a band from just across the East River in Brooklyn that recently earned worldwide renown. The NYC foursome became a viral sensation after posting a video online of them performing their single “Take Me Out” live on the subway, using only iPhone apps as instruments. “As a band we’ve always done these creative video blogs … and we try to showcase our music through it as well. This most recent one was no different,” explained guitarist Eric Espiritu, whose little brother thought up the concept. “He pitched it, and we were like, ‘Yes! Let’s do this. Let’s figure out how we’re gonna do it, where we’re gonna do it, and let’s just do it.’ Audio’s all live, it’s all one take. Video is one take cobbled together from three different iPhone video cameras.” In addition to garnering nearly 4 million views on YouTube, the clip also has won over some notable fans. “Alyssa Milano tweeted our video!” gushed Espiritu. “What’d she accompany it with? It said, like, ‘I like this,’ and then the link.” Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo has supposedly seen the video as well. At the Thrillist.com bash, Atomic Tom performed an energetic 40-minute set of anthemic power-pop with a few ballads thrown in for good measure, mostly from their album The Moment , which drops on Tuesday (November 22). (Despite hailing from the hipster mecca, bassist Phil Galitzine says the group has no indie designs: “We’re not really an indie band, we don’t really have an indie-band sound.) Lead singer Luke White — whose voice could be mistaken for that of the Killers’ Brandon Flowers — flawlessly pulled off frontman duties, keeping the crowd engaged, while drummer Tobias Smith, Galitzine and Espiritu steadfastly took to their respective instruments. The show culminated in a revved-up cover of Tears for Fears’ “Everybody Wants to Rule the World,” followed by “Take Me Out.” The finale had everyone dancing and some even singing along. Atomic Tom played the song that put them on the map with so much might that they seemed almost worn once it ended. But it was worth it — by the end of the evening it seemed evident that many more people would be playing that tune on their own iPhones. Related Artists Atomic Tom

Joe Jonas Says Relationship With Demi Lovato Was ‘Friendly’

JoBro was interviewed by InStyle before Lovato left tour to seek treatment. By Jocelyn Vena Joe Jonas and Demi Lovato Photo: Dimitrios Kambouris/ WireImage While there has been speculation that Demi Lovato ‘s split from Joe Jonas may have been one of the reasons she left their tour to seek treatment, in a new interview, the Jonas brother insists that life on the road with his ex had been drama-free. “With Demi, it’s been friendly,” he told InStyle, in an interview that took place before Lovato decided to seek treatment for her physical and emotional issues. “There hasn’t been any drama.” On Wednesday, Lovato’s rep confirmed to MTV News that she would stay in treatment next week, contrary to reports that she would be out by Thanksgiving. In the issue, Jonas opens up about his love life, noting that he looks for a “great girl” in a potential love interest. “I’ve been able to meet some really nice girls and some not-so-nice girls,” he said about his famous love life. “I always try to be cool and still be friends, but sometimes it’s better not to.” Jonas, who is now romantically linked to “Twilight” actress Ashley Greene , said he’s willing to use his relationships as potential musical inspiration, just like another ex, Taylor Swift . “People say, ‘Are you mad that somebody writes a song about you?’ and I say, ‘No, that means I have the freedom to write a song about her,’ ” he explained of Swift. Joe also dished a bit about what fans might hear on his solo album . “I began writing with a Michael

Sarah Palin Slams ‘American Idol’ For Hosting ‘Talent Deprived’ Contestants

In her upcoming memoir, the former vice-presidential candidate labels unskilled ‘Idol’ competitors ‘victims of the cult of self-esteem.’ By Nuzhat Naoreen Sarah Palin Photo: Jewel Samad/ AFP/ Getty Images “American Idol” may entertain millions of viewers, but Sarah Palin apparently isn’t one of them. In excerpts from her upcoming memoir, “America by Heart: Reflections on Family, Faith, and Flag,” leaked by Gawker , the former vice-presidential candidate slams the reality show for hosting what she refers to as “talent deprived” contestants. “Did you ever wonder where the producers of ‘American Idol’ come up with the seemingly endless supply of people who can’t sing but are deluded enough to get in front of a national television audience and screech out a song anyway?” Palin asks in the book. Palin, whose daughter Bristol Palin is currently on the reality show “Dancing With the Stars,” goes on to say those unqualified contestants who appear on “Idol” are “victims of the cult of self-esteem.” “No one they’ve encountered in their lives — from their parents to their teachers to their president — wanted them to feel bad by hearing the truth,” she writes. “So they grew up convinced they could become big pop stars like Michael Jackson.” But it’s not all criticism. Palin praises former judge Simon Cowell for dishing out hard truths to the competitors. “Cowell can be a little harsh at times, but he upholds the highest standards and something in us recognizes and responds to that,” she writes. “Unfortunately Cowell is almost alone in his willingness to tell hard truths.” Palin further argues that “hard truths” are necessary, as “a growing chorus of voices is trying to convince our kids that hard work isn’t necessary anymore.” Palin’s memoir is set to be released on Tuesday (November 23). Winter Music Conference Officials Explain Conflict With Ultra Music Festival

‘We’re going to be hurt a little bit,’ admits WMC owner Bill Kelly about 2011 scheduling differences between the electronic dance music events. By Adam Stewart Deadmau5 performs at WMC 2010 Photo: MTV News Controversy has swirled around the electronic dance music community for the past two days over the Winter Music Conference and Ultra Music Festival’s misaligned 2011 schedules . While initial uncertainties left EDM enthusiasts crying foul over the seemingly early WMC dates, the initial lack of information has now given birth to crucial endorsements from prominent players. Late Wednesday afternoon Luis Puig, owner of Space Nightclub in Miami, came out swinging in defense of the 26-year-old Winter Music Conference’s integrity, whilst slamming that of Ultra Music Festival, accusing it of greedy practices. “WMC used to be about free parties with DJs and industry folks sharing and enjoying new music. Now, it is about greed and money,” says Puig in a 780-word manifesto sent late yesterday afternoon to his nightclub’s promotional e-mail list. “I love Ultra [Music Festival] and what they bring to the game,” he goes on to say, “but I do not agree with their greedy strategy to manipulate and monopolize Music Conference. This is just not good for anyone.” While Puig blatantly admits that he does indeed capitalize off of the business brought in by UMF (whose gates lay just a short walk from his downtown Miami club), he is quick to point out that “without WMC, there would be no Ultra Music Festival.” Meanwhile, while Puig’s manifesto was being absorbed by the masses, the official Winter Music Conference team posted an update to its website entitled “Just the Facts,” aimed at dispelling the various rumors scurrying about the Web over the past 36 hours. “We were blindsided by Ultra’s last minute announcement,” said WMC organizers of UMF’s supposed noncompliance. The WMC post alleged that UMF management breached their contract with WMC, claiming “a signed October 15, 2009, contract between the two entities [stating] that the 2011 Ultra Music Festival would be presented during the five-day period in February, March or April 2011 designated and promoted by WMC as the ‘WMC week.’ ” While the specific legalities officially associated with this possible breach are unclear, it is rumored that UMF was unable to secure permitting in Miami’s Bicentennial Park for the weekend of March 11-13 due to the annual Calle Ocho Carnival , which is expected to draw a crowd of more than 1 million to downtown Miami on March 13. A lack of municipal resources are being tagged with the blame. Puig — who also heads up the WMC’s famed Surfcomber Pool Parties — spoke to MTV News last night and argued that neither artists nor party promoters will even have the ability to properly sustain a pool-party-laced, faux-WMC week centered around the UMF dates. “The City of Miami Beach only issues Pool and Beach Party permits during the week of the official WMC,” he maintains. If this is indeed true, then one of the most alluring and popular elements of a potential “UMF Week” would be pushed to the wayside. Later in the evening, WMC owner and co-founder Bill Kelly spoke exclusively to MTV News and further corroborated the points in Puig’s manifesto, exclaiming, “Louis nailed it on the head!” Kelly, however, does admit that the departure of UMF from WMC week will absolutely affect his longstanding operation negatively. “We’re going to be hurt a little bit,” he says, noting that more than 25 percent of those who buy the official WMC registration pass — which currently costs $275 — do so to take advantage of the complimentary UMF ticket (now selling at $179 for the three-day pass). However, Kelly goes on to speculate that the separation of the two entities might actually open up new doors for both parties, including one scenario that might even entail the creation of WMC’s own exclusive “festival style” performance centerpiece. “The possibility of doing a smaller, more intimate festival on the beach is a real possibility now,” says Kelly. “Because of Ultra Music Festival’s size, they have been banned from [having their event] on [Miami] Beach.” Some would agree that Puig, who recently pulled off the Miami permutation of the Swedish House Mafia’s “Masquerade Motel” to a crowd of nearly 10,000, is perfectly suited to take on that challenge. In addition to Puig’s WMC endorsement, many others seem to be at least silently preparing to publicly do the same, including promotional groups such as BMF/Auriela, who last year played host to the popular Belevedere VIP Lounge at the W Hotel, which also has announced its pairing with the official WMC dates, likely returning its base of operations to the W. “Winter Music Conference is a weeklong cultural celebration and they have our full support,” says Aurelia Group president Lainie Copicotto. “From VIP Music Lounges to huge nightclubs to small ‘in-stores’ and poolside performances, WMC is not about one event or one DJ. WMC is the bigger picture.” With these key WMC endorsements, those historically involved have now been prompted to take sides in the matter. Ultra Records, which carries no affiliation to UMF, and the online-EMD-music store Beatport have both told MTV News that they will issue statements and event plans for Miami in the coming days. MTV News is also tentatively scheduled to speak with the official UMF concert promoters later this afternoon. What’s your opinion on the WMC vs. UMF debate? Tell us in the comments.
