Lady Gaga’s Born This Way Will ‘Grab All The Monsters,’ Akon Says

‘She is amazing when it comes to just taking things to the next level,’ label boss says of Gaga’s 2011 release. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Kelly Marino Akon Photo: MTV News Earlier this year, Akon teased that Lady Gaga was working on “crazy” new tracks for her forthcoming Born This Way album. Now, Gaga’s label boss has a few more details to share about the hotly anticipated LP, due in 2011. “Well, Gaga and her follow-up, I’ve definitely heard [it], and what I can really tell you about it is the fact that I’m excited — and I’m hard to excite,” he laughed to MTV News about the release. “I’m really hard to excite, ’cause my big question was like, ‘Wow, how are you going to outdo yourself on this one? Do you realize how big you are? Do you know how big you really are? How are you going to outdo yourself?’ ”

J. Cole Says Drake Initiated ‘In The Morning’ With Text

MC talks to Mixtape Daily about Friday Night Lights collaboration: ‘It’s the perfect song for us to get on first.’ By Jayson Rodriguez J. Cole Photo: MTV News Celebrity Favorites: J. Cole The old adage is that great minds think alike, and regarding the J. Cole and Drake collabo “In the Morning,” the saying couldn’t be more true. The two young MCs finally linked up on the track from Cole’s recently released mixtape, Friday Night Lights . It happened as a result of a budding friendship between the two, despite blog fodder that the rhyme slingers don’t get along. “I got a text from Drake,” Cole told Mixtape Daily . “Now, I kind of just let people say what they say on the Internet or when they have discussions, but the real truth is me and Drake are cool, and have been cool and have been building a relationship. But he hit me when I was in Paris [on a tour], like, ‘Yo, I just heard this “In the Morning.” ‘ He had just heard it for the first time. He said it was so good that he told me some wild story, you know those exaggerated stories, like ‘I need better beats,’ just one of those type of things, giving me props.” Cole originally recorded “In the Morning” in 2007 in his bedroom, featuring three of his own verses. The track almost made one of the North Carolina rapper’s previous mixtape efforts, but he held onto it before it eventually leaked to the Web. When Drake sent him a message, however, he told the Toronto lyricist he had actually been thinking about reworking “In the Morning.” Cole said Drake responded: “Save me 16.” When Cole hit Stateside, he reached out to the song’s producers, L&X Music, and requested the file. He said he tweaked it with a breakdown and some other additions to “take it to the next level.” Drake sent Cole his verse earlier this month, Cole released the record Thursday, and was aflutter over the Roc Nation signee and the Young Money solider finally doing a song together. “The rumors of tension [between us] were so high, I thought it was cool to break the ice with that type of record,” Cole said of the slow burner. “And like [Drake] said, it’s the perfect song for us to get on first,” he added. “Because everyone is expecting ‘Brooklyn’s Finest,’ and I don’t know if it’s like that. [Drake] said it himself : We got a long time to do those records.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . Related Videos Mixtape Daily: J. Flo Rida Remembers Creating His Stage Name, On ‘When I Was 17’

‘I sat up there for about an hour and then it finally it hit me,’ the rapper reminiscences in latest episode. By James Dinh Flo Rida Photo: MTV News When Flo Rida was growing up, he had aspirations of becoming a rap superstar. But the aspiring MC knew he would have to introduce himself to the world of hip hop in a big way. On the latest episode of “When I Was 17,” which also features actresses Melissa Joan Hart and Alison Sweeney, the 31-year-old star reminisces about his teenage years and reveals how he came up with his all too recognizable stage name. Before skyrocketing as a solo artist, Flo (born Tramar Dillard) was a part of a rap group. But even then, he knew he had to create an identity for himself that would let him stand out within the band. “When I was 17, to be a part of a group like the Groundhoggz, you definitely have to come up with a name,” the MC recalls. Flo Rida, who was going by a different name in those days, explains that one of his friends urged him to come up with a new alias. “At first, I was going by the name of Ruckus Pimp,” Flo recalls. “I just thought that was like a little bit out there, so I went to over my boy’s house. He’s just like, ‘Man, we got to come up with a name today.’ ” The MC explains that he brainstormed for a while before finally taking inspiration from the place he grew up, the Sunshine State. “So, OK, I sat up there for about an hour and finally, it hit me,” he says. “Take Florida, break it in half and there you go: Flo Rida.” “When I Was 17” — this week featuring Flo Rida, Melissa Joan Hart and Alison Sweeney — premieres Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV Related Videos ‘When I Was 17’ Episode 204 Sneak Peek Related Artists Flo Rida

My Chemical Romance’s ‘Sing’ Video: Go Behind The Scenes!

Clip premieres at 12:01 a.m. on MTV.com. By James Montgomery My Chemical Romance’s Gerard Way on the set of their video for “Sing” Photo: MTV News My Chemical Romance’s brand-new “Sing” video doesn’t premiere until 12:01 a.m. ET on MTV.com, but you can get a sneak peek at some behind-the-scenes action right now. Last month, MTV News was on set with the guys of MCR as they took over downtown Los Angeles in the very early morning hours to film “Sing,” the second clip from their upcoming Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys album. It picks up right where the first video — the white-hot “Na Na Na” — ends, following the band’s Killjoy characters as they invade Battery City (and the headquarters of the evil Better Living Industries) in an attempt to rescue a mysterious little girl from the clutches of the nefarious Korse. Do they succeed in their mission? Well, to be honest, we’re not sure if they succeed or not, mostly because, on the day we stopped by, MCR were busy burning rubber up and down a L.A. tunnel in their Killjoy Trans Am — they do all their own stunts, for the record — shooting several scenes in which they peel out, peer menacingly and, most awesomely, bust right on through a checkpoint manned by Blind Industry soldiers (and at least one Draculoid). It looked like it was a blast, and in between takes, MCR frontman Gerard Way — who co-directs the video along with P.R. Brown — watched replays and laughed, almost as if he couldn’t believe he was being allowed to get away with this. And then, daylight came and shooting was over. Trust us, we’re waiting to see how this whole thing plays out too. But before the big premiere — again, it’s at 12:01 am ET on MTV.com — check out our behind-the-scenes look at the making of My Chemical Romance’s “Sing.” What are you expecting from the latest MCR video? Jay-Z Says Watch The Throne With Kanye West Is On ‘Another Level’

‘Decoded’ MC tells MTV News teaming up with ‘Ye for joint LP is ‘fantastic’ because he’s watched him grow. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Sway Calloway Kanye West and Jay-Z Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage Jay-Z has been on top of the MC heap for so long you’d think he’d be fine ruling his monarchy without outside contributions. But for his next set, Watch the Throne, Jay is making a collaborative effort with Kanye West, and the Brooklyn legend tells MTV News he’s excited about the project, especially given the “Runaway” star’s growing status as a hip-hop king. “This is another level of that recording,” Hov explained to us this week. “Because Kanye, I’ve seen him — really he’s like a brother to me — I’ve seen him from the beginning to where he is now. And to see him as a producer and to see how he’s growing as a producer and as an artist, for me, on another level, it’s enjoyable. I’m watching the guy that I pretty much mentored become his own guy, with his own opinion. It’s fantastic.” The project was originally slated to be an EP, but West confirmed to MTV News in October that Watch the Throne would now be a full-length release. “We putting out a whole album now,” ‘Ye said. “We had done five [songs] so far, but then a few of them kind of were out there, and I put them on my album. Sorry, Jay. But we got some more, and we’re going to the South of France at the end of the month to just record new ideas. But we’ll probably be done with the album in a day.” The pair ventured to France last month to record material as planned, and Jay-Z revealed he and West will head out to Australia soon to finish the rest of the album. The inspired duo recently completed seven songs in three days, according to Hov. Are you glad Jay and Kanye are teaming up for a joint album? Tell us in the comments! Demi Lovato Won’t Leave Treatment Facility Next Week

Rep tells MTV News ‘Sonny with a Chance’ star ‘remains committed,’ despite false reports that she would leave for Thanksgiving. By Jocelyn Vena Demi Lovato Photo: Jason LaVeris/ WireImage On Wednesday, reports surfaced that Demi Lovato had plans to leave her treatment facility next week to spend Thanksgiving with her family. Sources told E! News that the Disney star hoped to be home for the holiday. However, a rep for the starlet denies that report in a statement to MTV News. “Recent reports stating that Demi Lovato will be out of treatment by Thanksgiving are false,” the rep tells us. “While she would of course love to be home for the holidays, she remains committed first and foremost to her treatment.” The rep does goes on to say that “Demi has made tremendous progress to date, but understands that she has more work to do. Unfortunately, the news outlet that reported this story originally failed to call us for comment or to fact check the story before it was printed.” Lovato quit her tour with the Jonas Brothers about two weeks ago to deal with “emotional and physical issues.” Last week, Disney released a statement noting that they would revamp Lovato’s series , “Sonny with a Chance,” to reflect her absence, focusing the story line on the inner-workings of the sketch comedy program Lovato’s character, Sonny, appears on, “So Random!” “This allows her the time she needs to get well, without distraction or pressure,” a Disney Channel spokesperson said. “Again, we extend our ongoing support to Demi and her family as she works to overcome personal issues.” The show’s new format will focus on a beefed-up version of “So Random!” packed with guest stars, performances and digital shorts. Shooting for the revamped show will kick off in January, as originally scheduled. Send your well-wishes to Demi Lovato in the comments section below. Crystal Bowersox Goes Her Own Way On Farmer’s Daughter

‘American Idol’ runner-up has written most of the tracks on debut album due December 14. By Gil Kaufman Crystal Bowersox’s “Farmer’s Daughter” Photo: Jive Records As you might expect, Crystal Bowersox is doing things her own way on her upcoming debut album, Farmer’s Daughter. The 12-track disc from the season-nine “American Idol” second-place finisher, due out December 14, is a mix of country grit and blues growl. And unlike previous “Idol” runner-up debuts (or winner debuts for that matter), most of the songs were written by Bowersox, with two pre-dating her time on “Idol.” The disc opens with the pedal-steel rocking, high-stepping country jam “Ridin’ With the Radio,” penned by Bowersox; her new husband, Brian Walker , provides background vocals. The party tune about hitting the road and belting out tunes however you like is followed by a cover of the legendary Buffalo Springfield anti-war anthem “For What It’s Worth,” which is given an update with a drum machine-like rhythm, a countrified dobro solo and Bowersox’s patented sassy blues mama growl. In a break with the typical “American Idol” debut LP template, the disc features a few tunes Bowersox wrote during her pre-“Idol” days. While season-nine winner Lee DeWyze released two indie albums before his just-released debut, Live It Up, dropped, he didn’t include any of those tunes on his major-label bow, on which he co-wrote all 11 songs with veteran songwriters. The pre-“AI” tracks on Bowersox’s album include the rousing hometown radio hit homage “Holy Toledo” and the emotional title track. The latter, reminiscent of the early work of Melissa Etheridge, tells the tale of a rough-and-tumble upbringing. “All I ever needed was you to be here for me,” she sings. “This time is the last time you’re going to see us around/ This was the last chance to prove you wouldn’t let me down/ So go on, get gone and get away from here,” she adds, her voice rising with feeling as she bids farewell to an abusive parent whose trust has been lost. In addition to playing guitar on all of the album’s tracks, Bowersox shares a few writing credits on songs such as the super poppy “Lonely Won’t Come Around,” which she penned with Ryan Harris and Alexandra Tamposi, and the touching country duet “Mason,” written with husband Walker. The first single, “Hold On,” is the only original she doesn’t have a writing credit on. The big-sounding pop song about the pressures of navigating fame without your love by your side was penned by former “Idol” judge Kara DioGuardi and Nickelback’s Chad Kroeger. The other tunes on the disc include the blues shuffle “On the Run,” the barroom rocker “Kiss Ya,” the ballads “Speak Now” and “Mine All Mine” and hushed album closer “Arlene,” which features a touch of home, courtesy of Bowersox’s old bandmate and pal Frankie May, who plays bass on the track. Ke$ha’s Cannibal Hits The Web

‘Listen to it,’ singer insists in a post on her website. By James Montgomery Ke$ha Photo: Venturelli/ Getty Images Ke$ha ‘s don’t-call-it-an-EP, do-call-it-a-companion-piece Cannibal doesn’t hit stores until Tuesday, but since roughly three-quarters of the songs are online already, she’s decided to just post the whole thing right now. Yes, fans can now hear all of Cannibal right now on Ke$ha’s website , and all they have to do is enter their Twitter handle, Facebook account or MySpace ID to do so. “This is my album premiere, and it’s top secret, and it’s really fun and it’s wild,” Ke$ha said in a message posted on her site (in which she is rather inexplicably dressed like Maverick from “Top Gun”). “Things are going to get crazy and a little awkward, it’ll be okay. Listen to it.” Yeah, seriously, listen to it. Because while most of Cannibal has already leaked — including, of course, first single “We R Who We R,” the banging, clanging “Sleazy,” the title track and the bumping club track “Blow” — there are still plenty of moments to discover. Look for “The Harold Song,” which sees Ke$ha ditch her snarling shtick to lament over a lost love; “Crazy Beautiful Life,” where she looks back on how far she’s come — from her days as a “sh–ty waitress” to an internationally famous pop star — over a beat lifted from an old NES; “Grow A Pear,” a kiss-off to “a dude with a vag”; and “C U Next Tuesday,” an angry swipe at a scumbag guy who won’t ditch his ex. Loaded with glitchy beats and coated in a slick lacquer of Auto-Tune, Cannibal follows in the footsteps of Ke$ha’s breakthrough Animal but also finds her stretching her legs, both as a songwriter and a singer. It’s a companion piece to that album and a capper on the past (very hectic) year of her life. Like Ke$ha said, things get a little bit crazy, and a little awkward, but you should most definitely listen. And then get ready for whatever she does next. Have you checked out Cannibal yet? Dr. Dre, Eminem’s ‘I Need A Doctor’ Hits The Net

Em takes his mentor to task for his perfectionist ways on emotionally charged Detox track. By Jayson Rodriguez Dr. Dre and Eminem Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images Eminem turned to Dr. Dre to help him get out of his funk when the two hit the studio to work on the Detroit lyricist’s post-hiatus comeback LP, Relapse. Now, it looks like the tables have turned. On Dre’s “I Need a Doctor” — the second leak in as many days from the producer’s long-awaited Detox — Em lowers the boom on his mentor saying his “perfectionist” rep is leaving the legend stuck in the mud. “It hurts when I see you struggle/ You come to me with ideas/ You say they’re pieces, so I’m puzzled,” Eminem raps over the Alex da Kid produced-number. ” ‘Cause the sh– I hear is crazy/ But you’re either getting lazy/ Or don’t believe in you no more/ Seem like your own opinion is not one you can form/ Can’t make a decision/ You keep questioning yourself, second guessing, it’s almost like you’re begging for my help/ Like I’m your leader, you’re supposed to be my mentor/ I can endure no more/ Don’t you remember who you are.” Throughout the track, an emotionally charged Eminem references his own struggles and Dre’s assistance and notes the super-producer’s personal troubles as well, citing his son’s death. Dre then rhymes about the pair’s history, from “Guilty Conscience” to his own indecisiveness. “Went through friends, some of them I put on, but they just left,” Dre raps. “They said they was riding to the death/ But where the f— are they now, now that I need them?/ I don’t see any of them, all I see is Slim.” Last month, Eminem revealed he and Dre were in the studio , presumably putting the final touches on Detox. “I’m in the studio with Dre now, let’s just say that,” Em said in an interview on his Shade 45 satellite radio station. “Pretty soon he’s going to make a beat and I might rap on it.” Do you think Dre’s Detox will ever be completed?
