‘Jersey Shore,’ ‘Glee’ Casts To Present At 2010 VMAs

Mary J. Blige, Swizz Beatz to perform with Drake, while Bruno Mars will join B.o.B at Video Music Awards on Sunday. By Jocelyn Vena The cast of “Jersey Shore” Photo: MTV The 2010 VMAs may be going live in Los Angeles this year, but MTV viewers will get a glimpse of Seaside Heights when the cast of “Jersey Shore” appears to present on September 12. But it’s not all “GTL” at the MTV Video Music Awards: The just got a bit more “Glee”-ful, as castmembers of the hit Fox show, including Jane Lynch, Cory Monteith, Chris Colfer and Amber Riley will also be on hand to present on Sunday. And those aren’t the only big names just added to the presenters list. TV talk-show maven and former “American Idol” host Ellen DeGeneres (who will tape an episode of her show at the VMAs), “Burlesque” star Cher, VMA-nominated Katy Perry, “Star Trek” star Chris Pine, Rosario Dawson, the cast of “Jackass” including Johnny Knoxville, Bam Margera, Steve-O are all presenting, along with reality-show starlet Kim Kardashian and Romeo of the Latin music sensation Aventura. Before the VMAs kick off at 9 p.m. ET, “Hills” star and newly named “Dancing With the Stars” contestant Audrina Patridge will be the official MTV International “2010 MTV Video Music Awards” red-carpet guest correspondent. Nicki Minaj will take the stage during the pre-show portion of the ceremony, while model Coco Rocha will host MTV.com’s “Red Carpet Report.” As if all of that wasn’t news enough, an already star-studded performance lineup has just gotten more so: Mary J Blige and Swizz Beatz will hit the stage with Drake, while Bruno Mars will join “Nothin’ on You” MC B.o.B . This latest round of celebrities joins previously announced performers including Eminem, Kanye West, Justin Bieber, Drake, Linkin Park and Usher. Those VMA acts should more than meet the show’s musical expectations, especially since host Chelsea Handler has said she won’t be doing any singing or dancing on the Nokia Theatre stage. “I’m not a dancer and I’m not a singer, and I don’t have the kind of ass that should be mooned. I mean it’s sweet, it’s a sweet ass, but it’s little and it’s white,” she joked. “I’m there to be funny, kind of, so hopefully I’ll just kind of doing that.” The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on September 12. The party starts with MTV News’ VMA Pre-Show at 8 p.m., followed by the main event at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for Best New Artist from now through September 12. Related Videos Gearing Up For The 2010 VMAs! Sean Penn Responds to Wyclef Jean’s Dis

Actor denies drug allegations that rapper made while freestyling at a concert on Friday. By Gil Kaufman Wyclef Jean and Sean Penn Photo: Getty Images Back in his Hollywood “Bad Boys” days, Sean Penn might have reacted to a harsh dis with his fists instead of his words. But Penn took the high road over the Labor Day holiday weekend, releasing a measured response to a harsh lyrical attack from former Fugees leader Wyclef Jean as the two continued their public sparring match over ‘Clef’s failed bid to run for the presidency of Haiti . “Mr. Jean is clearly unfamiliar with the physical demands put upon volunteers in Haiti,” read the statement, which was released by a spokesperson for Penn. “As aid workers there, the notion of depleting the body’s immune system thru the use of illicit drugs is ludicrous.” The letter was in part a response to some new lyrics Jean threw down at Hot 97’s On Da Reggae Tip concert in New York on Friday. He switched up the verses to his 2004 song “President” in order to take aim at Penn and his former Fugees bandmate Pras, who both questioned Wyclef’s fitness to run earthquake-ravaged Haiti. “I got a message for Sean Penn: Maybe he ain’t see me in Haiti because he was too busy sniffing cocaine,” Jean sang at the show on Friday, adding, “I got a message for Praswell, even though you don’t want to support me, I got love for you, even though you only kicked eight bars in the Fugees.” Penn, who has lived in a tent in Haiti since just after January’s earthquake, also used his statement to explain to ‘Clef exactly what he’s been doing on the ground and why the lyrical roundhouse failed to connect. “More specifically, J/P Haitian Relief Organization (a.k.a. JPHRO) has a ZERO tolerance policy for any and all illegal drugs,” Penn’s statement said, referring to the non-governmental organization the actor co-founded to help the island just hours after the quake hit. “As the leader of this organization, Sean Penn has not only set this policy, but adheres to it. That Mr. Jean would make such a false accusation is reckless and saddening, but not surprising.” When Jean spoke about his plans to run for Haiti’s head of state on CNN’s “Larry King Live” in August, Penn, who was also a guest on the show, expressed concerns about the singer’s motivations for seeking political office. “Right now, I worry that this is a campaign that is more about a vision of flying around the world, talking to people. It’s certainly not one of the youth drafting him. I would be quite sure that this is an influence of corporations here in the United States and private individuals that may well have capitalized on his will to see himself flying around the world,” Penn said. The actor also wrote in a Huffington Post column that despite Jean’s public support for the island nation, the MC wasn’t around during critical moments after Haiti’s devastating January earthquake. “I was there for those six months after the earthquake and so many of us on the ground wondered where he was when that kind of attention was so necessary and absent, and why he was NOT helping to keep this desperate situation in the news,” he wrote. “None among us felt or expressed anger toward it, but rather a universal sadness for his silence, as he is America’s most admired cultural link to Haiti.” Related Artists Wyclef Jean

Fellow rapper Nelly joins the MC as he performs at a club in Atlanta. By Mawuse Ziegbe T.I. and Nelly (file) Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images T.I. isn’t letting his legal situation hold him back from rocking the stage. Just days after getting busted for alleged possession of drugs, Tip showed up in an Atlanta nightclub on Friday and ripped the mic. In a video posted online, the King of the South spits a fiery rendition of Urban Legend’s “Motivation” at a venue crowded with fans thrusting their camera phones in the air. Sporting a white tee from his Akoo clothing line and a black baseball cap, the ATL MC bellowed his flow over the screams from the amped-up crowd. St. Louis hip-hop star Nelly hopped up next to the embattled MC as he went into the hit single “U Don’t Know Me.” The set shows confidence and resolve from a superstar in a precarious position with the law. T.I. and his wife Tameka “Tiny” Cottle were arrested on Wednesday night in Los Angeles after making an illegal U-turn. Police searched the car after allegedly noticing the scent of marijuana wafting from the vehicle and found a number of pills which were later identified as ecstasy . T.I.’s club appearance is the rapper’s first post-arrest foray into the spotlight, but his lady has been expressing her thoughts on the Internet. The day after the bust, T.I.’s wife thanked supporters on Twitter for all of their e-love. “Jus wanted 2say thank u 2every1 dats been leaving encouraging msgs & prayers!” Tiny tweeted on Thursday. “We love u guys:) going 2bed now! So glad 2b n a nice clean bed.” However, on Friday, Tiny lashed out at a critic online who, responding to reports that the reality star and her hubby were caught with methamphetamines, suggested she should switch up her Twitter nickname. “U da real dummy cause u believe everything u hear!” Tiny replied to @ totallytaylor25 who re-tweeted Perez Hilton’s missive that the former Xscape singer should change her Twitter handle to @ MajorMethMama. “I don’t even no wat meth look like! Eminem Channels Marlon Brando For VMA Promo

Rapper remakes scene from 1954 movie ‘On the Waterfront’ for the shoot. By Mawuse Ziegbe Eminem Photo: MTV “I’m ready for my close-up,” joked Eminem, who had two plugs rammed up his nose on the set of his MTV Video Music Awards appearance promo. Even though the superstar MC was covered in prosthetic bruises and hobbles away from an enflamed car in the commercial for the VMAs, Eminem kept things light behind the scenes at his shoot. In fact, the Recovery rapper said that he wasn’t stressing the details, but was there get the job done and maybe horse around a little bit. “They tell me that it’s something for the VMAs, but I’ve been in my little rat hole. They just let me out to play,” Eminem said. “So I’m kind of like that hamster in the ball, when they let him out and he runs around in the ball. I’m in my little ball right now, running around.” In between the running around, the hip-hop megastar, who is up for eight Moonmen , managed to turn in an intense performance in the clip. The commercial opens to the strains of “Not Afraid,” with Em limping away from an overturned car right before it bursts into flames with a blast that sends the rapper toppling to the ground. After an onlooker helps him up, a slew of young men in ’50s period clothing watch Em stagger along as he gains an upright, steely-eyed version of himself. Then, the confident, unharmed Eminem leads the crew of young men toward a city skyline in the distance. The rapper explained that the visual is based on a scene from a classic 1954 Marlon Brando flick. “It’s kind of a take on ‘On the Waterfront.’ Like, loosely,” Em explained. “The car is exploding and I’m hurt.” The promo is infused with the high drama of the chart-topping MC’s return to the top of the music game after battling the lows of a debilitating drug addiction. If the power of the visual short is any indication, Em is going to run things as a performer at this year’s VMAs. What are you expecting from Eminem’s appearance at the VMAs? Kanye West Apologizes To Taylor Swift For 2009 VMA Interruption

‘I’m sorry, Taylor,’ West wrote on Twitter Saturday morning. By Paul Cantor Kanye West and Taylor Swift at the 2009 Video Music Awards Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ FilmMagic Kanye West took to his Twitter account Saturday morning (September 4) to readdress the 2009 Video Music Awards , when he fatefully interrupted Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech . “I’m sorry, Taylor,” he wrote. “We’re both artists, and the media and managers are trying to get between us. She deserves the apology more than anyone. Thank you [Twitter co-founders] Biz Stone and Evan Williams for creating a platform where we can communicate directly.” Expounding on the backlash he received, he wrote, “If you Google a–hole my face may very well pop up 2 pages into the search. … There are people who don’t dislike me … they absolutely hate me. People tweeted that they wish I was dead … No listen. They wanted me to die, people. I carry that.” Kanye went on to say that the media vilified him. He alluded to his claim during a 2005 NBC telethon for Hurricane Katrina that “George Bush doesn’t care about black people,” as a point for which the media was looking to pay him back. He noted that in the VMA aftermath, the media played the race card and turned it into an angry black man versus innocent white girl issue. “Even though the NBC telethon was widely praised y’all didn’t think they was just gone let me get away with that did y’all???!!!” he questioned, rhetorically. “The media has successfully diminished the ‘receptive’ audience of… KANYE WEST. …taking a 15 second blip the media have successfully painted the image of the ‘ANGRY BLACK MAN.’ The King Kong theory. With the help of strong will, a lack of empathy, a lil alcohol and extremely distasteful & bad timing … I became George Bush over night.” Kanye also said that he had a song he’d written for Taylor. Should she not be receptive to that idea, he said he’d perform it for her. “She had nothing to do with my issues with award shows,” he wrote. “She had no idea what hit her. She’s justa lil girl with dreams like the rest of us. Beyonc

Lady Gaga Pops Up At Eminem, Jay-Z Detroit Show

Pop star makes appearance at historic hip-hop concert. By Mawuse Ziegbe Lady Gaga and Eminem (file) Photo: Christopher Polk/ Getty Images The stars definitely came out for Eminem and Jay-Z. The hip-hop heavyweights brought big-name guests like Dr. Dre, 50 Cent and Drake onstage during their two-night Home and Home Tour run at Detroit’s Comerica Park. One megastar didn’t hit the stage but did show support during the duo’s final Motor City show: Lady Gaga. According to The Detroit News, the pop sensation, who was in town for her own Monster Ball Tour date on Saturday (September 4), checked out the show from a raised platform in the middle of the arena. Decked out in a silver miniskirt and sporting sable-colored locks, the native New Yorker grooved to Jigga and Alicia Keys’ smash “Empire State of Mind.” Gaga even threw up the Roc-A-Fella diamond when Hov ripped The Blueprint album cut “U Don’t Know.” reports the singer sipped from a plastic cup throughout the show and took in Jay’s set for about an hour before retreating backstage. Jay-Z, Eminem Stadium Show A Victory For Hip-Hop, Critics Say

‘What [Detroit] got was an evening that may well go down as a milestone for hip-hop,’ Brian McCollum wrote in USA Today. By Paul Cantor Eminem performs in Detroit on Thursday Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage It’s one thing to produce a legendary concert, it’s another for it to actually go down without a hitch. Jay-Z and Eminem set the bar pretty high for themselves back in May when they announced they’d be performing two nights of stadium shows in each of their respective hometowns. That’s literally months of anticipation, and anything could have gone wrong during that time. But according to early reports, last night’s show at Detroit’s Comerica Park was nothing short of historical. “What [Detroit] got was an evening that may well go down as a milestone for hip-hop,” Brian McCollum wrote in USA Today . “Rock ‘n’ roll has its enduring concert superstars, its Springsteens and Stones. But for hip-hop — whose live legacy has been comprised mostly of flash-and-burn young acts and retro-circuit oldies — Thursday’s confident, high-quality production represented something unique. It was loud, resounding evidence that hip-hop can do the larger-than-life thing, too.” Aside from the evening being momentous for hip-hop culture, it was also a return to form for one of Detroit’s native sons. “Eminem set out to confront his past demons, put them to rest and claim a victorious and potent present,” Gary Graff wrote at Billboard.com . “[H]e largely did during an exhaustive, guest-filled 100-minute performance at Detroit’s Comerica Park that spanned his entire recording career with full or partial performances of 33 songs.” At Spin.com , Chris Handyside wrote, “Both men stepped up huge with a one-two punch of sets that over four hours encapsulated the hip-hop flavors of their cities and pop music in general. For his part, Jay was at ease delivering a catalog of career-spanning crowd-pleasers from ‘The Dynasty’ to ‘Hard Knock Life’ to a majestic ‘Empire State of Mind’ … Jay is, simply, a rock star.” But according to Handyside, for all the spectacle Jay’s show had, it was merely an alley-oop for Em to slam-dunk the night away. “This was Eminem’s night, after all was said and done,” he said. At the MTV Newsroom blog, Kyle Anderson compared the night’s festivities, complete with its revolving circus of guest performers — Dr. Dre, D12, 50 Cent, Lloyd Banks, Drake, Young Jeezy and Memphis Bleek — to the Band’s 1976 retirement concert, “The Last Waltz.” “[T]he cameos were piling up like the junker cars that lined Em’s set,” Adam Graham wrote in The Detroit News . “Drake joined him for ‘Forever,’ returning a favor for when Em appeared at the Toronto rapper’s hometown performance earlier this summer; 50 Cent and Lloyd Banks came on for mini-set of 50 Cent songs, including ‘Patiently Waiting’ and ‘In Da Club’; and Dr. Dre appeared — wearing a Proof shirt, no less — and did a small set of songs with Em, including ‘Nuthin’ but a G Thang’ and ‘Still D.R.E.’ Em got the crowd to chant for Dre’s long-delayed Detox LP as Dre left the stage, and the reclusive star promised, ‘I’m comin’!’ ” But Graham also wrote that Em’s performance dragged a bit during a D12 mini-set. He also noted that Jay-Z has played a lot more shows in the past few years, and hints that as a result, Jay’s show seemed a bit more refined. “Unlike Eminem,” he wrote, [Jay-Z] didn’t seem to be relying on pre-recorded tracks to bolster his vocals.” Could be much ado about nothing, though, as Handyside felt differently. “Where Jay put on a full-on polished show,” he wrote, “Em hosted a loose cannon revue and seemed to enjoy every minute of it. He’s made clear that he’s through with the ‘game’ element of hip-hop. And Thursday he let it be known what that looked like.” Related Videos Detroit Goes Wild For Jay-Z And Eminem Landmark Show Related Photos Jay-Z And Eminem Make History In Detroit Related Artists Eminem Jay-Z

B.o.B. Breaks Through: A VMA Cheat Sheet

After nearly quitting the music business last year, the eclectic MC and songwriter from Atlanta shot to the top of the pop charts. By Jayson Rodriguez B.o.B Photo: ABC B.o.B. isn’t like most pop stars. He really isn’t like most rap stars, either. But the guitar-strumming MC’s mix of melodic rhymes and earnest songwriting has him up for a few Moonmen at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards , which air live on September 12 at 9 p.m. Here’s how he did it. The lanky lyricist grew up on a diet of Michael Jackson and Tina Turner, but when he got older his tastes widened to include everything from the Beatles to Bj

Insane Clown Posse Talk Tila Tequila, Method Man Incidents At The Gathering

‘We’ve got nothing but love for Method Man and Redman,’ Violent J tells MTV News. By Kyle Anderson Insane Clown Posse’s Violent J and Shaggy 2 Dope Photo: MTV News Back at the beginning of August, one of the biggest music festivals of the year took place over a long weekend in Illinois. No, not Lollapalooza — the 11th annual Gathering of the Juggalos, the four-day extravaganza curated by and starring the Insane Clown Posse. The festival has grown in both size and stature over the past few years, in part because of the online success of trailers that tout the festival and in part because of its increasingly eclectic lineups. But this year, the Gathering picked up some attention for more negative reasons. A good portion of the mainstream media coverage of the festival reported on the injuries suffered by reality star and sometimes rapper . She suffered a number of injuries and threatened to sue ICP, though according to Shaggy 2 Dope and Violent J, nothing of that sort has happened. The pair regret what happened to Tequila and are still trying to figure out her motivation. “The only reason she got hurt was that she stayed up on stage. It was obvious they didn’t want her there, so why did she stay up there?” ICP member Violent J told MTV News. “It was a shame, because all she had to do was get off the stage,” he continued. “Nobody said, ‘You have to get on there and stay up there to get paid.’ The way I understand it, they paid her before she got up there and they said, ‘There’s a rumor you’re not wanted here, and you’re free to take off if you like.’ She went up there and stayed up there anyway.” Legendary Wu-Tang Clan rapper Method Man also suffered a facial laceration after getting hit with flying debris during his performance with partner Redman. That bothered the men of ICP, because they feel it misrepresented the tenor of their fans. “What happened to Method Man — that shouldn’t even be discussed, because that was one a–hole,” Violent J said. “One d—head threw something, and by chance, it hit [Method Man] in the face. But he wasn’t speaking for Juggalos or for ICP or the Gathering. And they weren’t getting bombed up there — it was one a–hole.” “That kid shouldn’t have thrown something and should have played the lottery instead,” added Shaggy 2 Dope. “Same chances.” But while ICP aren’t sure what their status is with Tequila, their relationship with Meth is copacetic. “We’ve got nothing but love for Method Man and Redman, and we’ve talked to them since then. We talked to them that night and we talked to him just the other day,” J told MTV News. “And if we had caught the kid who threw that, he’d a got it.” Related Artists Insane Clown Posse Method Man Tila Tequila
