Linkin Park’s ‘The Catalyst’ Video: Kiss The Past Goodbye

New clip sees LP pushing the envelope even further. By James Montgomery Photo: Warner Bros. Records Linkin Park are probably one of the 10 biggest rock acts on the planet. I mention this mostly because: A) It’s true, and B) It makes everything they’ve done post- Hybrid Theory (their big breakout album) all the more admirable. They have never been afraid to push the envelope and try new things. This is easy to do if you are a band that has nothing to lose, but in LP’s case, it borders on insanity. Their albums are the kinds of things labels schedule their financial quarters around. They’re tent poles (or life preservers) meant to keep things from sagging too low or sinking too deep. The danger of alienating their fanbase is very real, and the results could be catastrophic. Still, with each successive album, Linkin Park push even further into the void, and, in the process, they leave their n

In honor of the nine-year anniversary of Aaliyah’s death , Drake penned a letter to the “Rock the Boat” singer that was posted on RapRadar.com . “Dear Dana,” Drake begins, referring to the singer by her middle name. “I’ve never lost a parent, a friend, or a lover but I will never forget this day for the rest of my life. I remember getting the news that you had passed and it connected with my heart like a clean shot from Muhammad Ali. I was crushed.” The Thank Me Later rapper went on to explain that he was one of Aaliyah’s biggest fans and that he was “truly in love” with her. He complimented the star’s appearance, the way she carried herself, and the confidence she communicated in her music, be it about love or heartache. Now that he’s become a professional musician, he lamented that he and Aaliyah would never get the chance to collaborate. “But you should know, we all listen to you every day and we remain inspired and moved by all that you’ve given the world,” he finished. “I hope I make the right life choices so I can end up in heaven where I know you rest your head. I’ll continue to make music in your honor until the day we finally meet.” Share your memories of Aaliyah in the comments. Miley Cyrus And Liam Hemsworth Split

Disney star and Australian actor have parted ways, Hemsworth’s rep confirms. By Mawuse Ziegbe Liam Hemsworth and Miley Cyrus Photo: Jamie McCarthy/ Getty Images Miley Cyrus is ending the summer as a single lady. The teen queen has split from her boyfriend Liam Hemsworth after more than a year of dating. Hemsworth’s PR representative confirmed the “Can’t Be Tamed” singer and her beefy Australian beau have officially called it quits. “It’s true,” the actor’s rep told RadarOnline.com . The news comes after reports that the couple were getting serious. According to Radar, Cyrus recently purchased a $3.4 million house, not far from her parents’ California home, where Hemsworth was a frequent guest. Hemsworth and Cyrus struck up a romance after meeting on the film set of “The Last Song” in 2009. The pop star said earlier this year that although she wasn’t on the lookout for a boyfriend, Hemsworth won her over with his gentlemanly charm. “I kind of just wanted to focus on my work. I tend to hide behind my work sometimes,” Cyrus said on “Ellen” in March. “But I met him, and he opened the door for me, and I was like, I have been in L.A. for three years and I don’t think any guy has actually opened the door for me. It wasn’t that he wanted the job. That’s just who he is. I was like, ‘Wow, that is super-impressive.’ I actually turned to the director and said, ‘He’s got the job.’ He’s hot and he opened the door. Excellent.” Cyrus, who dropped her latest album, Can’t Be Tamed, in June, said that much of the LP was inspired by her romance with Hemsworth. “There are a lot of songs that are about Liam,” Cyrus told MTV News when Tamed was released. “I tell him every one’s about him,” she quipped. Swizz Beatz Talks ‘Going Into Overdrive’ To ‘Make The Best’ Records

‘When you’re working on albums, nobody sleeps,’ the energetic producer says of projects with Kanye West, Mary J. Blige and more. By Jayson Rodriguez Swizz Beatz Photo: Bryan Bedder/ Getty Images Swizz Beatz has been busy in the studio lately, working on numbers for Kanye West, N.E.R.D., Mary J. Blige and, of course, his own solo album, Haute Living. The multiplatinum producer has been tweeting about his long nights recently, but he told MTV News that when you’re inspired by a project, there’s just no sleep until completion. “When you’re working on albums, nobody sleeps,” he explained of all the work piled on his plate. “The excitement of being in the moment of music and having that pressure on you — you got a lot of people waiting on that project, you not gonna sleep either. You want to get it right in your mind, [so] you don’t have an appetite, you’re not tired. You go into overdrive … to make the best thing possible. “That shows how it goes when you work with real artists, you work until it’s done,” Swizz added. “Sometimes it gets overdone [ Laughs ].” Over the weekend, Swizz and Blige connected in the studio and completed four records, according to the Ruff Ryder alum’s Twitter messages. He told MTV News that at least one of the songs would see the light of day this week. While Swizz said he’s producing a number of songs for her new project, he also revealed that Blige might appear on one track from his forthcoming LP. While holed up in a New York studio earlier this month, Swizz managed to collaborate with Kanye West on his “Power” remix. His studio session with Pharrell happened to overlap with Kanye’s and the three producers wound up working on one another’s projects by the end of the night, Swizz said. “We were in there working on multiple things, [Kanye] was working on a song for my album, I was working with N.E.R.D. in another room for their album, and then the ‘Power’ remix was still in the works,” Swizz explained. “So, at the end of the night, everybody just ended up in both rooms. It was just going from one joint to the other and everyone showing respect to everyone’s craft. It was super-dope.” Who else would you like to hear on a Swizz Beatz collabo? Timbaland Denies Reports That He Contemplated Suicide

‘Only thing I did was take a drive and figure out how I’m gonna handle it,’ rapper says about his actions after being robbed. By Shaheem Reid Timbaland Photo: Theo Ward/ Getty Images Timbaland says that there is no way he was thinking about committing suicide. The super-producer called in to Ryan Seacrest’s radio show this morning and denied the TMZ report that he was contemplating suicide after a $2 million watch was stolen from his Malibu house. “People steal from me all the time,” Tim told Seacrest. “Something did happen. That wasn’t a watch. It was something else.” Tim also said that he suspected somebody close to him had stolen from him and he left his home to think. “Only thing I did was take a drive and figure out how I’m gonna handle it,” he explained. “I wasn’t talking, so I guess people got worried. I tell people if my mom ain’t calling or my brothers or my best friend, ain’t nothing to talk about. … Now why would I commit suicide? I could buy what was stolen.” The Malibu/ Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station weighed in on the subject. Police say they had received a call from “distraught family members,” and according to a police report, “His wife, mother, mother-in-law and other friends had been trying to find him but that proved unsuccessful so they called for the assistance of the Sheriff’s Department.” A missing persons report was apparently filled out yesterday. A police helicopter located Tim a short while later and the hitmaker returned home, the report also says. Tim did leave his crib later and spent all night in a recording studio. The platinum king told Seacrest he had just come out of the lab, where he was finishing up Keri Hilson’s new album. He said fans can expect a couple of singles from it in the next couple of days. “I just got back from the studio,” Tim said. “I don’t know if a person who’s going to commit suicide would be in the studio.” Related Artists Timbaland

Cee-Lo ‘F— You’ Collabo Was ‘Perfect Marriage,’ Bruno Mars Says

‘It was a dream session come true,’ Mars says of creating track with Smeezingtons producing partner and Cee-Lo. By Jayson Rodriguez Bruno Mars Photo: MTV News Bruno Mars and production partner Philip Lawrence of the Smeezingtons are the pair behind Cee-Lo’s potty-mouthed breakout hit, “F— You.” The track is equal parts brutal and comical and, according to Mars, the duo’s collaboration with the Gnarls Barkley/ Goodie Mob member was ideal. Mars and Lawrence have long been influenced by Cee-Lo and the rapper/singer took to their tune like Angelina Jolie did to Brad Pitt. “Talk about the perfect marriage, we been fans of Cee-Lo for real,” Bruno Mars told MTV News. “And we became labelmates and I was just feeding that to them,” he said of urging the record label to smooth the way for a collabo.” ‘We got to get in. I know he’s working on something, we got to do something.’ So he comes in the session, and it was one of the most organic sessions. “We wrote a song and it’s not for radio, obviously, with the title. We’re probably gonna have to work on that. But it was a dream session come true; that was the idea collaboration. Everyone was just putting their minds together and [we came] up with one of our favorite tracks we’ve ever done.” The production duo’s recent credits include tracks for Mary J. Blige, B.o.B and Travie McCoy, with Mars lending his vocals to McCoy’s “Billionaire” and B.o.B’s VMA-nominated smash “Nothin’ On You.” But the profanity-laced record was cooked up three years ago when Cee-Lo first began working on his sophomore solo effort, The Lady Killer, due December 7. The Smeezingtons delivered a rough sketch of the song that included production and a reference hook. Cee-Lo heard the music and instantly wanted the number, Mars said. “He came in and we started singing it for him,” Mars said. “And he’s just, ‘I love that, man. That’s beautiful.’ And we said, ‘Let’s go,’ and that’s all we really had — just that concept — and now it’s blowing up.” Have you heard Cee-Lo’s “F— You”? Tell us what you think in the comments! Justin Bieber Gives Fans A Chance To Be In His 3-D Movie

Beliebers can upload a video of themselves singing ‘That Should Be Me’ to get in the film. By Kara Warner Justin Bieber Photo: Frederick Breedon/ Getty Images Attention Justin Bieber fans (you might want to sit down while reading this, if you haven’t already seen the news on Bieber’s Twitter account): You have an opportunity to be in his new 3-D movie! That’s right, Justin Bieber and director Jon Chu made the announcement via Twitter on Tuesday (August 24) that they are hosting a 24-hour casting call for all the Beliebers out there to be in their new concert extravaganza. All it takes is a visit to the website BieberFever.com/movie . According to the site, fans have an opportunity to “be a part” of the movie, which could mean any number of things, as the details in the announcement are few (we recommend a thorough perusal of Paramount Pictures’ “terms of use” statement for further explanation before submission). To be considered, fans must submit a home video of themselves singing along to Bieber’s “That Should Be Me” or they should “Show us how ‘U Smile’ ” by sending in a photo or video. When Chu and Bieber made the Twitter-nouncement on Tuesday afternoon, Bieber followed up his initial tweet with an update that fans had already overwhelmed the website’s server. “Sorry u guys crashed the server!!” he tweeted. “Haha. It’s back up now!! Get in MY MOVIE!!! U got less than 24 hours!!” When MTV News caught up with Chu recently (who also directed “Step-Up 3-D”), he said the Bieber movie will be for everyone — not just his devoted fans. “[It’s] a movie for his fans, a movie for people who don’t know him, and we’re gonna tell the underdog story of where he came from,” Chu said. “There’s not going to be acted-out scenes and I can’t talk about the rest. It’s not your typical concert film and it’s not going to be a biopic … but it is about his life. I think it’s more of a documentary. We’re going to figure it out as we go.” As for how much of it will be in 3-D, he said, “You’ll have to see it. We’re figuring that out now.” The Justin Bieber 3-D movie is set to open on Valentine’s Day weekend. Will you submit a video to be in Bieber’s movie? Let us know in the comments!
