Beach Boys’ Label Threatens Suit Over Katy Perry’s ‘California Gurls’

Threat comes after both writers of the original ‘California Girls’ praised Perry’s song. By Gil Kaufman Katy Perry Photo: Alberto E. Rodriguez/ WireImage Katy Perry is having an epic summer thanks to her smash hit “California Gurls,” which has sold more than 3 million copies already and topped the singles charts for weeks. But the soon-to-be-wed pop star and Rolling Stone cover girl may end up sharing some of the proceeds from that track with the pop icons who first sang the praises of West Coast beauties. According to the New York Post , representatives for the Beach Boys are threatening to sue Perry for including the classic line “I wish they all could be California girls” in her tune. The line is lifted from the Boys’ 1965 rock classic “California Girls,” and the paper reported that publishing reps at the Boys’ Rondor Music have sent a letter to Perry’s label demanding that the original song’s writers, Mike Love and Brian Wilson, be given a writing credit on “Gurls” as well as a share of royalties. Spokespeople for Perry and the Beach Boys could not be reached for comment by MTV News at press time. An unnamed recording industry source reportedly told the paper: “Rondor Music has sent a letter to Capitol on behalf of Mike Love and Brian Wilson, saying Katy has cribbed one of the most famous lyrics in history, so Love and Wilson should be entitled to a writing credit and a portion of the royalties.” The iconic line is rapped by Snoop Dogg near the end of Perry’s song (“California girls, man/ I wish they all could be California Girls”), which, ironically, was recently praised by Love. “The subject matter is still in vogue — just ask Katy Perry. I think the part she did is pretty cool. There are a lot of writers on it, and I think it’s probably a stroke of genius to have the king of canine cool, Mr. [Snoop] Dogg, do his thing. But I think her creative part, her musical part, is pretty hooky. I think it brings the Beach Boys’ 1965 classic to mind, that’s for sure,” Love told Billboard. Wilson has called the song “infectious.” Sources reportedly told the Post that Wilson and Love asked Rondor to send the letter, but spokespeople for the musicians said it was Rondor’s decision. “Rondor owns the track and called Brian and Mike, saying they were going to complain. Brian likes Katy’s record and doesn’t know where the situation stands,” according to Wilson’s rep, while Love’s rep added, “Mike and Brian wrote the song … but any legal action is up to Rondor.” Related Photos Concept Art For Katy Perry’s ‘California Gurls’ Related Artists Katy Perry The Beach Boys

Nigel Lythgoe Wants Paula Abdul Back On ‘American Idol’

Producer talks about his plans to refresh the show in season 10. By Gil Kaufman Nigel Lythgoe Photo: Mathew Imaging/ Wireimage We still don’t have an update on the judging panel that will greet contestants for the upcoming 10th season of “American Idol.” But now that former executive producer Nigel Lythgoe has confirmed that he’s returning to the show, the witty Brit and “So You Think You Can Dance” judge has hinted about some of the changes he wants to make. One of his first ideas is to bring back one of the show’s most beloved judges: Paula Abdul . Lythgoe told Daily Variety that despite her commitment to headline a new dancing show on CBS, he’d love to get Abdul back in the “Idol” fold. “I still love Paula,” he said. “She’s signed to CBS, probably exclusively, but I’d recommend we have her in a heartbeat.” Lythgoe would not discuss the rumored imminent deals to bring in Jennifer Lopez and Aerosmith singer Steven Tyler as replacements for Ellen DeGeneres and Simon Cowell, but Variety reported that he gave a “thumbs up” to both. “They can knock her film career, but (audiences) know she’s a good actress,” he said of Lopez, who has struggled at the box office of late with a string of duds. “And as J-Lo, she has had some great pop records. If she joins, I’m happy.” And despite some recent issues that landed him back in rehab after decades of sobriety, a nasty near split with his longtime band and some erratic behavior, Lythgoe said he likes Tyler for his unpredictable nature. “He has come through that whole rock ‘n’ roll circus,” Lythgoe said of the wiry 62-year-old rock icon. “Why wouldn’t you want a legend there? You never know what he’s going to say. That, as a TV producer, you’re interested in.” Lythgoe shot down rumors that he might seat himself at the judge’s panel, but seemed to secure lone original judge Randy Jackson’s place at the table, referring to the producer and former Journey bassist as a “barnacle.” He did not address rumors that two-season judge songwriter Kara DioGuardi might be on her way out. Spokespeople for Lopez, DioGuardi and Tyler have not returned requests for comment. Once known as “Nasty Nigel” for his sharp barbs on the U.K. shows “Pop Idol” and “Pop Stars,” Lythgoe said the reason “Idol” was criticized last year was because the judging panel simply didn’t gel. “It’s not because I disliked any of them, but the chemistry wasn’t there,” he said. “It almost felt like Simon Cowell turned his back on Ellen. It felt uncomfortable.” He would also like to see a renewed focus on the singers rather than the revolving door on the judge’s panel. “Where did Ne-Yo or Chris Brown come from?” he asked. “Where did Justin Bieber come from? Where are these kids. That has got to be the priority, more than anything. More than the judges’ panel.” Referring to his tweaks as “spring cleaning” rather than a face-lift, Lythgoe also suggested he’d like to pare back the reliance on the telling and re-telling of contestants’ backstories. Though he won’t be sitting behind the table, the music man with the Midas touch, Interscope head Jimmy Iovine (Eminem, U2, Dr. Dre), will have what the Los Angeles Times described as a “significant” role in the show next season as well. Quoting unnamed sources close to the situation, the paper reported that Iovine is unlikely to be a judge, but could serve as “mentor of sorts.” The news comes as “Idol” prepares to switch its record deal from a longtime pact with Sony Music to the Universal Music Group — Iovine is chairman of Universal’s Interscope Geffen A&M label. Iovine’s long tenure at Interscope and impressive track record could help bolster a judging panel that will be missing Simon Cowell’s music business experience. Lythgoe isn’t the only one talking “Idol” these days. Fox boss Rupert Murdoch spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about his network’s crown jewel and promised that the show would be better next season. “All I can assure you is that next year’s ‘Idol’ will be different,” Murdoch said. “It will be better, the music will certainly be better. And we got great expectations for it.” As for the eagerly anticipated announcement of the new judging panel, Murdoch was mum, promising only that, “We are very close to announcing who the judges will be. … There are very active negotiations with a number of people.” Related Photos Who Should Be The Next ‘American Idol’ Judge? Lady Gaga Inspired ‘To Write Music’ After Hearing Prop 8 Ruling

‘FULL EQUALITY! THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING!’ Gaga tweeted in response to the overturning of California’s Proposition 8. By James Dinh Lady Gaga Photo: Jon Furniss/ WireImage Lady Gaga is joining the chorus of famous gay-rights supporters applauding Wednesday’s overturning in California of controversial Proposition 8, which banned same-sex marriage. The pop star, who always been a vocal supporter of the gay community, has revealed she’s so happy about the ruling that it inspired her to write new music. “At the moments notice of PROP 8 DEATH I instantly began to write music. BUBBLE DREAMS FOREVER! FULL EQUALITY! THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING! REJOICE and CELEBRATE gay communities and straight all over the world. Our voices are being heard! Loud! SCREAM LOUD AMERICANOS!” she told fans on her Facebook and Twitter . Several other celebrities publicly cheered on the news that U.S. District Chief Judge Vaughn R. Walker ruled that the voter-approved ban was unconstitutional . Gaga, who has always taken a stand against discrimination towards the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community, most recently paid homage to them in her music video for “Alejandro.” “It is a celebration of my love and appreciation for the gay community, my admiration of their bravery, their love for one another and their courage in their relationships,” she told Larry King about the clip that features male dancers in a few homoerotic sequences. Earlier this year, the singer took a bold stand for high school student Cole Goforth, who was sent home from Greenbrier High School in Tennessee for wearing a T-shirt that read “I Heart Lady Gay Gay.” “Thank u for wearing your T-shirt proud at school, you make me so proud, at the monsterball, you are an inspiration to us all. I love you,” Gaga tweeted . “I love you Cole, you just be yourself,” she added while on tour in Australia. “You’re perfect the way God made you.” What do you think of Lady Gaga’s comments on the Prop 8 ruling? Avenged Sevenfold Bump Eminem From Billboard #1

A7X’s Nightmare ends Recovery ‘s five week reign. By Gil Kaufman Avenged Sevenfold drummer The Rev Photo: Ethan Miller/ Getty Images Last week, we wondered how long Eminem ‘s Recovery could hold on to the pole position on the Billboard 200, predicting that it might run the board until Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream drops on August 24. Someone forgot to tell Avenged Sevenfold . The SoCal hard rockers have managed to end Slim Shady’s five-week run at #1 with the best debut of their career. Their fifth album, Nightmare , debuts at the top on next week’s chart on sales of 163,000, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan. That was just enough to edge out Em, who drops to #2 (159,000 units shifted),as Recovery edged toward the 2 million mark and he celebrated his nine VMA nominations . There are no other debuts this week, and the rest of the top 10 just features a shuffling of the cards. Last week’s #2, Rick Ross ‘ Teflon Don, only falls one slot to #3, but with a 64 percent sales drop-off, the Bawse sold considerably less product (63,000) in his second week on the charts. Justin Bieber ‘s My World 2.0 moves up a few to #4 (38,000), Drake ‘s Thank Me Later drops one (#5, 34,000), Kidz Bop 18 is down one to #6 (29,000), Lady Antebellum ‘s still-strong Need You Now is up two (#7, 27,000), Sheryl Crow ‘s 100 Miles From Memphis drops 5 to #8 (24,000), VMA queen Lady Gaga ‘s The Fame is up to #9 (24,000) and NOW 34 is down two spots to #10 (22,000). Veteran rapper Tech N9ne ‘s collabos album The Gates Mixed Plate — featuring Big Scoob , Glasses Malone , Devin the Dude and Brotha Lynch Hung — debuts at #13 (17,000). Fat Joe ‘s The Darkside Vol. 1 has a soft landing at #27 (12,000). Further down the line, R&B vocal group Dru Hill celebrate Indrupendence Day with a #30 bow on sales of 11,000, and new indie buzz act Best Coast sail into the #36 spot with Crazy for You (10,000). The iTunes charts tell a similar story, as Eminem holds on to the #1 slot on the singles tally with the smash Rihanna collabo, “Love the Way You Lie,” while A7X takes over the top spot on the album list. Nightmare is followed by Em’s Recovery , Ross’ Teflon Don , Drake’s Thank Me Later , Gaga’s Fame , an iTunes session from former 10,000 Maniacs singer Natalie Merchant at #6, the Black Keys ‘ Brothers , Mumford & Sons ‘ Sigh No More , the Hans Zimmer score to “Inception” and B.o.B ‘s B.o.B Presents: The Adventures of Bobby Ray . While iTunes does not provide detailed sales data, it’s clear Em’s hold on the top of the singles heap is safe, as the rest of the top 10 is essentially the same as it was last week with just one new title, Usher ‘s “DJ Got Us Fallin’ in Love” at #6. Otherwise, it is: Taio Cruz ‘s “Dynamite” (#2), Enrique Iglesias ‘ “I Like It” (#3), Katy Perry ‘s “Teenage Dream” (#4), Perry’s “California Gurls” (#5), B.o.B’s “Airplanes” (#7), Mike Posner ‘s “Cooler Than Me” (#8), Jason Derulo ‘s “Ridin’ Solo” (#9) and Eminem’s “Not Afraid.” It’s not likely that Eminem will retake the top spot next week, as the Arcade Fire ‘s buzzed-about The Suburbs is due to debut, along with new albums from Bun B , Buckcherry and a Lady Gaga remix album.

Justin Bieber’s ‘CSI’ Story Line Will Be ‘Explosive’

He’ll play ‘a troubled young man … whose hard-luck life has left him scarred and angry,’ executive producer tells MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber tweets a photo from his acting debut on CSI Photo: CBS/ Twitpic With a 3-D movie about his life in the works, fans will get a sneak peek at Justin Bieber ‘s acting abilities when he makes his network TV acting debut on the “CSI” season premiere next month. It turns out, Justin, a longtime fan of the show, really wanted a part on the series. “I got a call that Justin really was a fan of ‘CSI’ [and] that’s all I have to hear, and so it just was perfect timing,” executive producer Carol Mendelsohn told MTV News about casting the singer in the September 23 episode. “Justin was looking to make his dramatic acting debut. We had an incredible role for a young actor in [our season premiere], so it just seemed like the perfect marriage.” Bieber showed up on set for one day of work, and he managed to impress everyone in the cast with his work ethic. He is part of one very juicy story arc that will likely have viewers coming back later in the season to see what happens next. (Justin shoots again later on in the season for an episode set to air in February.) “There was one day that Justin had available and that was the day he came to ‘CSI’ and filmed his four scenes for the premiere,” she continued. “We will introduce his character in the premiere in September and then it will be a character arc and we will see him again playing Jason McCann again in February.” In a photo tweeted by Bieber, his character is seen handcuffed. So why the cuffs? Well, we got some answers from Mendelsohn. “He’s a troubled young man, raised in the foster-care system, whose hard-luck life has left him scarred and angry,” she explained. “When we first meet Jason, we meet him at a community center where he’s giving a testimonial in honor of a man who takes Jason and his older brother in when they had no one else, and that man is now in jail and Jason’s brother is out for revenge and looking for payback. “And the CSIs are looking for the brother and Jason is caught in the middle,” Mendelsohn teased. “At the end of the episode, we’re left with the question: Is Jason a good kid stuck in a bad situation or is Jason a bad kid hiding behind his cuteness? You can see why Justin was such a perfect choice to play this role. … It’s an explosive story.” Are you excited for Justin to appear on “CSI”? Tell us in the comments! Related Artists Justin Bieber

Lindsay Lohan Looks ‘Incredible’ In ‘Inferno’ Lingerie Pics, Director Says

‘I’ve never seen anybody who could turn it off like that and turn it on so intensely,’ Matthew Wilder tells MTV News. By Kara Warner Lindsay Lohan on the set of “Inferno” Photo: TylerShields.com Despite the provocative nature of the recently leaked promotional photos for “Inferno,” which feature a scantily clad Lindsay Lohan as porn star Linda Lovelace, director Matthew Wilder told MTV News the subject matter behind the biopic is not at all sexy. Wilder said the inspiration for that particular scene came from a very dark place (much like the tone of the entire film, which he explained earlier this year ): the first time Lovelace’s then-husband, Chuck Traynor, forced her into pornography. “The [photos] represent the scene that you will see in the movie,” Wilder said. “Her husband took her to a hotel room. [He] kind of ambushed her and didn’t tell her what was going on.” Lovelace once wrote that her initiation into prostitution was a “gang rape by five men, arranged by Mr. Traynor.” Wilder said the photos, which were used in a promotional campaign to secure financing for the film at the Cannes Film Festival, are kind of “an abstract interpretation” of that incident. Wilder said what surprised him most about the photos was Lohan’s look. “It’s interesting, because she looks really incredible,” he said. “Linda Lovelace was not remotely this good-looking. It was really strange. This is really kind of like that movie thing, where everything is kicked up one or two degrees beyond reality.” Adding to Lohan’s physicality are her acting chops, which Wilder said she can turn on and off in the blink of an eye. “There’s a scene that we did, I don’t know if we printed photos from it or not,” Wilder explained. “But we put her in a chair, and she went into this total volcanic meltdown and then just like a second later snapped out of it and walked away, walked back and was talking normally to everyone else. … I’ve never seen anybody who could turn it off like that and turn it on so intensely and then kind of walk away.” Moving forward, Wilder said production on “Inferno” will begin as soon as Lohan is ready after her release from the UCLA Medical Center rehab facility. “There is talk about going in November,” he said. “It’s good. We’ve just got to wait until our star gets out of the [treatment facility], and then we’ll be on our way.” He added that he hasn’t spoken with Lohan yet, just her mother, Dina. “I don’t know if she can talk,” Wilder said. “It’s one of those things where you can talk to her at certain times and certain times you can’t, I don’t really know.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Young Buck Discusses Contractual Battle With 50 Cent

‘It’s about to get real, real interesting,’ he says of G-Unit Records issues. By Shaheem Reid Young Buck Photo: MTV News Young Buck says he didn’t keep an eye on his business with the Internal Revenue Service, thus his outstanding $300,000 debt to Uncle Sam . But when it comes to his contractual obligation to 50 Cent and G-Unit Records, the Cashville, Tennessee, native says he won’t drop the ball: He’s focused on getting off the label. “It’s on the way,” Buck said about his next official album when we caught up with him recently in Houston. “The music speaks for itself. I’m everywhere when it comes to online — I throw music out. People are already aware of my situation … the whole fight with the contract thing. It’s about to get real, real interesting, people. I will say that much. “If you ain’t focused on Buck, now is the time to get focused on Buck,” he continued. “With this whole contract situation, we really gonna see what this was really about. Y’all mark my words: I’ll be back to MTV to finish this when it all ends. At the end of the day, I appreciate the people that’s sticking right there through the fight I’m going through as far as my contract situation.” If and when Buck is successful in dissolving business ties with 50 Cent remains to be seen. In the meantime, the Southern spitter is working the mixtape circuit. “As far as the mixtapes, Back on My Buck Sh– (Part 2) is on the way,” he revealed. “It’s produced by Drumma Boy, all the way through. I got records everywhere. I got one of the hottest mixtapes that’s in the streets right now, 601 to the 615, CTE and Cashville. I’m just staying out here until I get this monkey off my back with the contract.” On Tuesday, Buck’s home was raided by the IRS, reportedly because he has about $300,000 in unpaid taxes. “The worst part of this isn’t the material stuff — that will all be replaced,” Buck said in a statement. “It’s what it does to the people around me. They took my kids’ PlayStation, my assistants’ computers, and baby’s mothers’ jewelry. They took my home studio so I can’t even record. “I have a new team in place, but I am also paying full attention now,” he added. “Nothing like this will ever happen again. This is a huge wake-up call for all entertainers to stay on top of your own trusted employees and team members, and replace anyone that was put in place by your record label if the situation you have goes sour. This IRS situation came about because I trusted accountants, lawyers and managers to handle my business for me while I focused on making music. From now on, I am going to stay on top of my own business.” What do you think of Young Buck’s label woes with 50 Cent? Share your thoughts in the comments. Related Artists Young Buck 50 Cent

Chris Brown Puts His Spin On Nicki Minaj’s ‘Your Love’

Singer remixes the Young Money starlet’s hit song as he promises fans a new album in 2011. By James Dinh Chris Brown Photo: Frazer Harrison/ Getty Images Despite a year of difficult career speed bumps, including his postponed U.K. promotional tour and the controversy surrounding his Michael Jackson tribute performance at the BET Awards, Chris Brown remains optimistic about getting through the rough times. His latest career move is his remix of Nicki Minaj’s hit single “Your Love,” which the singer posted on Twitter and informed fans that something special may be heading their way. “i just smashed this beat!!! UR LOVE REMIX DONE!!! for the ladies,” he tweeted early Wednesday (August 4). On the cover, Brown sings an ode to his female interest as he belts over the song’s Annie Lennox sample and hip-hop backbeats. “Shorty, I’mma tell you this once/ Girl need it (tonight)/ When I do it to you home and do it right, please believe it/ All night long, baby right now/ When you lay in my arms,” he sings during the chorus. Showing off his versatility, Breezy becomes more aggressive during the song’s second verse both vocally and lyrically as he explicitly raps, “Yeah, let me step up to the plate now/ Big kids in the room, no playground/ I wanna kiss everything from the waist down/ Keep ya ass up and your face down.” And it wouldn’t be right if Brown didn’t name-drop Minaj in the mix that praises a woman in and out of bed. “We can role-play, girl, give it to me now/ I’m giving you a massage/ A booty like Nicki Minaj/ Oh gosh,” he croons. Hours after Brown posted his remix, Nicki seemed satisfied with four different remixes of her song as she urged DJs to start spinning. “Ok DJ’s!!! 4 remixes to ‘your love’ by @rickyrozay, @duttypaul, @chrisbrown and @jaysean and they’re ALL DOPE! Play them! 🙂 #pinkfriday,” she said of her song, which currently holds the #1 spot on the Billboard Rap Songs chart . Aside from posting his cover of Minaj’s song, the singer also asked fans if they wanted another Breezy mixtape. “do yall want an “IN MY ZONE 2″!!! just a thought #inmyzone2,” he tweeted . While another mixtape isn’t certain at this point, Brown assured fans that the follow-up to last year’s Graffiti is in the works. “My new album will come next year or sooner but in the meantime i might ‘I MIGHT’ do something special for yall again!!!” he teased. Back in June, Drake said that he and Brown hit the studio together shortly after attending the 2010 BET Awards. It is unknown what, if anything, the duo cooked up, but the Young Money rapper revealed that he wanted to collaborate with others as his project was finished. “I was studio hopping, seeing where I could lend my hand to whoever’s project since I’ve done mine,” Drake said. Nicki Minaj Says Pink Friday Is ‘Progressing Miraculously’

‘It’s coming out way better than I could even have imagined,’ Minaj says of debut album. By Mawuse Ziegbe Nicki Minaj Photo: MTV News Nicki Minaj’s Barbie army is likely to create a frenzy at stores when the rapper drops her debut LP, Pink Friday, on November 23. Speaking to MTV News on the video set of her Trey Songz collabo, “Bottoms Up,” the Young Money diva updated her fans about how the album is coming along. “The album is progressing miraculously, I would say,” Minaj said. “It’s coming out way better than I could even have imagined or dreamed or hoped for.” The Queens MC has made her mark with a slew of collaborations, from her girl-power breakup anthem with Mariah Carey, “Up Out My Face,” to the sexed-up bars she dropped on Usher’s “Lil Freak.” However, the raptress revealed that she’s enjoying the process of creating solo records, where she is the main focus and not just the memorable feature. “It’s been very exciting to finally just make music that I love and not really having to incorporate myself on someone else’s record,” Minaj said. “I’ve been having a really great time.” Minaj also singled out a Pink Friday track that she said has the potential to be a major hit. “I have a record called ‘Right Through Me’ that I think will be a standout,” Minaj said. “It’s not gonna come right now. It’ll come closer to when the album drops, but it’s a really, really pretty song. Everyone’s gonna like it.” The MC also discussed the appeal of the record, saying, “It’s just really insightful but in a very conversational kind of way.” Minaj also said she’s been mulling how the album cover for her debut will shape up and only revealed that it will be “very fetch.” While the MC remained mum on the details, she did speak about what makes an eye-catching cover. “[A good album cover is] something that tells your own personal truth,” said Minaj, citing Notorious B.I.G.’s Ready to Die cover as one of her favorites. “Something that’s not just trying to catch someone’s attention, but rather … kind of feels like a part of your soul, a part of your creative expression.” What are you expecting for Nicki’s debut? Kanye West’s ‘Power’ Video Premieres Thursday On MTV

The 90-second clip will air at 11 p.m., after ‘Jersey Shore.’ By Shaheem Reid Kanye West Photo: MTV News It’s not a video, it’s a work of art. But MTV will be the gallery when Kanye West’s much-anticipated clip for “Power” debuts Thursday night at 11 p.m. ET/PT right after “Jersey Shore.” The Louis Vuitton Don and director Marco Brambilla have been adamant in avoiding the “music video” label since their collaboration was announced. “The ‘Portrait of Power’ premieres this Thursday on MTV right after Jersey Shore…it’s not a video… it’s a painting!” West tweeted Wednesday morning (August 4). Unlike the standard music video, West’s “Power” runs only 90 seconds. Speaking to The New York Times last week, Brambilla described the look of the video as “kind of apocalyptic.” “It had this very dark, personal conflict within it,” Brambilla said. “Because of his own concept of celebrity and his own notoriety, he’s keenly self-aware of all these things. And it all came out in the music.” Since “Power” leaked to the Net in May, the record has been lauded by fans as well as journalists . The song’s release was just part of West’s return from his brief musical hiatus. He produced two tracks (“Find Your Love” and “Show Me a Good Time”) for Drake’s Thank Me Later, and he appears on and produced “Live Fast, Die Young” on Rick Ross’ Teflon Don. Kanye has also produced and appears on albums by his G.O.O.D. Music roster of talent, Consequence, Big Sean and Kid Cudi, all due out on September 14. Thursday is a big night for video premieres, with Eminem’s “Love the Way You Lie” clip also debuting on MTV that night, at 9 p.m. before “Jersey Shore.” Are you excited for Kanye’s new video?
