Lil Wayne Debuts New Single, ‘Right Above It,’ Featuring Drake

First track from I’m Not a Human Being EP aired on New York radio on Tuesday. By Jayson Rodriguez Lil Wayne Photo: C. Flanigan/ Getty Images Lil Wayne dominated New York’s hip-hop radio stations on Tuesday night, when the Cash Money Records superstar conducted an interview on Hot 97, and almost simultaneously, his new single, “Right Above It,” featuring Drake, premiered on Power 105. The song is the first effort from Lil Wayne’s forthcoming EP, I’m Not a Human Being, slated for release on September 27 (Lil Wayne’s birthday). During his Hot 97 interview with Funkmaster Flex, Wayne said he recorded the music for his upcoming EP before turning himself in to serve a yearlong prison sentence. “Yes, it’s gonna drop before Carter IV, only on the Internet,” Wayne said over the phone. “This is stuff that I recorded right before I came here.” “Meet me on the fresh train,” Wayne raps over the synth-laden production. “Yes, I’m in the building, you just on the list of guest names/ And all of my riders don’t give a f—, X-games/ Guns turn you boys into … sex change.” Wayne later chants on the chorus: “Now tell me how you love it/ And know you at the top and only heaven’s right above it.” Earlier this year, Drake told MTV2’s “Sucker Free” host DJ Envy that he and Lil Wayne are planning on recording a joint project once Wayne finishes his sentence. “I went up to Rikers, and me and Wayne agreed that there will be a Lil Wayne/ Drake album,” Drake explained. “There’s some things I’m excited for in my life — I’m excited to go perform certain places — but [this project] will probably be one of the most exciting things in my life, because we make music on a different level. It’s just so fun, so comfortable. A whole album? To think about all the things we can do, especially if we’re gonna do 15 songs. Me and him don’t like to do 12, 13 [songs]. We want to do 15, 16. Yeah, Lil Wayne and Drake album.” What do you think about Lil Wayne’s “Right Above It,” featuring Drake? Let us know in the comments or tweet us @MTVRapFix . Related Artists Lil Wayne

Taylor Swift’s New Single ‘Mine’ Hits Internet

Lead single from singer’s upcoming Speak Now leaked on Wednesday. By James Dinh Taylor Swift Photo: Charles Eshelman/ WireImage If there’s anyone who knows how to sing a song with a spark of teenage love and a happy ending, it’s Taylor Swift. On Wednesday (August 4), the pop star’s “Mine,” the lead single from her forthcoming album, Speak Now, leaked onto the Internet. On the new song, Swift sings about what it feels like to find a guy who’s an exception to the rest. “Mine” is all about the wonders of being in a happy relationship after surviving a rocky past. Without straying too far from typical Swift subject matter, the song features an uplifting country/pop melody and a big chorus. “Do you remember we were sitting there by the water?/ You put your arm around me for the first time/ You made a rebel of a careless man’s careful daughter/ You are the best thing that’s ever been mine,” Swift belts on the sing-along chorus. And while Swift embraces her emotions, her take on relationships proves more realistic than some of her earlier material. “And I remember that fight, 2:30 a.m./ You said everything was slipping right out of our hands/ I ran out crying and you followed me out into the street/ Brace myself for the goodbye/ Because it’s all I’ve ever known/ And you took me by surprise/ You said, ‘I’ll never leave you alone,’ ” she sings on the song’s bridge. Last month, Swift described “Mine” as a reflection of her own love-life habits, revealing that she’s “developed this pattern of running away” when relationships turn to love and get serious. “The song is sort of about finding the exception to that and finding someone who would make you believe in love and realize that it could work out, because I’m never ever going to go past hoping that love works out,” she told fans during a live Ustream chat. Swift recently taped a performance of “Mine” for an upcoming special titled “CMA Music Festival: Country’s Night to Rock,” which will air September 1 on ABC. The video for the song was shot in early July and features British actor Toby Hemingway. Locals on the set reported spotting Swift shooting scenes on a lake and walking outside of a church. Kanye West’s ‘Power’ Video Is ‘Timeless,’ Director Says

The clip, which premieres Thursday on MTV, is ‘a video portrait of Kanye as a symbol of power,’ Marco Brambilla tells MTV News. By Steven Roberts Kanye West Photo: Dominique Charriau/WireImage Kanye West’s “Power” video , which premieres Thursday at 11 p.m. on MTV, was a collaboration between the outspoken rapper and artist Marco Brambilla. Brambilla is currently working on a nine-video installation for an early 2011 video retrospective at the Santa Monica Museum in California, but it was his “Civilization” installation at New York’s Standard Hotel that first captured West’s attention . MTV News caught up with the artist Wednesday afternoon (August 4) over the phone, and he said West told him the Standard installation was similar to something he would post on his blog . “He loved the installation,” Brambilla said. “What he likes to feature on his blog — and he featured it on his blog when it first came out — it’s kind of interdisciplinary. Whether it’s photography or video or sculpture or fashion, he’s very interested in exposing the ‘best of the best’ or what appeals to him the most. He had never seen anything that complex, and the video collage technique that I developed for it was a brand-new thing.” Brambilla said West appreciated the project’s themes of sexuality and religion, along with its overall “epic” quality. While Brambilla typically shies away from collaborations, he admired the similarities in their approaches. But it wasn’t until Brambilla heard West’s yet-untitled new album that he decided to direct “Power.” “I instantly connected to the themes on the album,” Brambilla said. “The whole idea of celebrity, the idea of power, the idea of sensuality in it, there’s sexuality in it as well, and those were all kind of themes that I’ve explored in my work before. Once I heard the album, that was what clinched it, and I felt very much in tune with the message behind the music. “And then specifically with the single ‘Power,’ I’ve always wanted to do something that would visualize power, to do a portrait of what power would look like in a sort of timeless way and being able to have him framed in that portrait — essentially doing a video portrait of Kanye as a symbol of power was very consistent with my art practice and what I explore in my artwork.” Will you be tuning in Thursday night to watch Kanye’s new video? Allison Iraheta Gushes About ‘Don’t Waste The Pretty’ Co-Star Orianthi

‘We want to write together,’ she says of her tourmate on Adam Lambert’s Glam Nation jaunt. By Jim Cantiello Orianthi and Allison Iraheta Photo: Donald Kravitz/ Getty Images If you saw Allison Iraheta and Orianthi recently on “So You Think You Can Dance” and thought, “Dang, they have some killer chemistry,” you’re not alone. The two have been rocking together on an almost nightly basis, thanks to Adam Lambert’s Glam Nation Tour , on which they each perform opening sets and collaborate on Iraheta’s single “Don’t Waste the Pretty.” “When [Orianthi] comes out [onstage], I get all crazy,” Iraheta told MTV News when Glam Nation hit New York this summer. “I’m all, ‘Man, I gotta start getting all manly and stuff.’ ‘Cause when she plays — her face, man. She’s intense.” Allison tapped the Australian guitar wiz to give “Pretty” a dirtier rock edge versus the pop recording initially released on her debut album, Just Like You. “She brings something so different to the song. It’s so crazy,” Iraheta beamed. Allison and Orianthi (Alli-anthi?) have so much fun rocking out, the two plan to join forces more often. “We want to write together,” Iraheta said. “I even told her: ‘Let’s bring the Heart [sound] back!’ ” The redheaded rocker (who gained millions of fans when she debuted on the eighth season of “American Idol” with a Heart song, appropriately enough) even went so far as to say she’d consider creating a band with Orianthi down the road. OK, so a permanent Alli-anthi rock band probably won’t happen. Instead, fans should just keep “Don’t Waste the Pretty” on repeat and hope that their busy schedules allow for a killer music video. When we spoke with Allison in June, she hinted that she’d have time to film a proper video once her Glam Nation commitment ended. But that was before Iraheta’s stint on Lambert’s tour was extended through October, thanks to popular demand from fans. Would you like to see Allison and Orianthi join forces on the regular? Ke$ha Says She May Go Country ‘One Day’

‘My mom wrote songs for Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton,’ the Nashville-born pop singer reveals to MTV News. By James Montgomery Ke$ha Photo: MTV News Last month, Ke$ha made headlines ( as she is wont to do these days) when she told Paper magazine that she was considering a move to country music , saying she was “really inspired” by the songs of Johnny Cash and Dolly Parton. On one hand, it did sort of make sense … after all, Ke$ha is from Nashville, and her mom wrote songs for some of the greatest country singers of all time. But on the other, you know, it’s Ke$ha. So, when MTV News caught up with her backstage at the Casio “Shock the World” party on Monday night, we decided to ask her about her future plans, and whether they included a countrified makeover. “I do love country music … [so] one day maybe, who knows. I don’t think I’ll stop singing until I’m dead,” she said. “I’m from Nashville and my mom wrote songs for Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton and Merle Haggard and I just love old-school country music, especially. I relate to it. And I also really like how most country songs tell a story, there’s a lot of storytelling and honesty involved, so I’ve taken a lot of my writing tips from country music … I mean, I’m definitely not done being a rowdy f—ing crazy bitch, but when I’m done doing that, who knows?” And, the way she sees it, the songs she wrote for her Animal album aren’t really all that far from country to begin with. At least when it comes to the whole “honesty” part of things. “The whole record is painfully, brutally honest,” she said. “Like talking about my ex-boyfriend, how he cheated on me. Idiot.” Should Ke$ha go country? Tell us what you think in the comments! Did Dr. Dre Know Detox Would Take This Long? ‘Absolutely Not’

‘I thought it would take, at worst case, a couple of years,’ he tells Vibe for his cover story with Eminem. By Hillary Crosley Eminem and Dr. Dre on the cover of Vibe Photo: Vibe While Eminem talked about death and Brittany Murphy in his interview for the Vibe “Juice” issue, Dr. Dre delved into his Detox delay , the “Under Pressure” leak and rumors of an instrumental album. The Eminem and Dr. Dre cover of Vibe ‘s 15th-anniversary “Juice” issue is a nod to their original appearance in the mag eight years ago. The issue hits newsstands August 16, and Dre began by answering the question on many fans’ minds: Did he know Detox would take this long? “Absolutely not. I thought it would take, at worst case, a couple of years,” the super-producer said. “For example, actual work time on The Chronic was nine months, and actual work time on my last album, 2001, was about 10 months. The actual work time on this album is about half of that, where I’m seriously focusing on it. There is always something coming up. Like signing talent, old and new.” The California icon also talked about the recent leak of his duet with Jay-Z, “Under Pressure.” “[That] was a little bit more frustrating, because at least ‘Crack a Bottle’ had a hook on it,” Dre said of a previous leak. “I wouldn’t be as mad at a leak if the song was done. “I’m not mad at the fans,” he continued. “I’m mad at the person that leaked the sh–. I have no idea how it got out. It’s not even worth looking to see who did it. It happens. The most painful part about it is that I’m passionate about what I do, so people should hear it in the right form. Somebody actually hacked into our e-mails, so that made our red flags go up. We’re in a new age, and that’s a sign: ‘Wake up, mother—-er. You have to be more careful with your sh–.’ That’s all there is to it. I know what’s up now.” As for an album of instrumentals, Dre said it’s definitely on deck. “Oh, yeah, that’s in the works,” he said. “An instrumental album is something I’ve been wanting to do for a long time. I have the ideas for it. I want to call it The Planets. I don’t even know if I should be saying this, but f— it. [ Laughs. ] It’s just my interpretation of what each planet sounds like. I’m gonna go off on that. Just all instrumental. I’ve been studying the planets and learning the personalities of each planet. I’ve been doing this for about two years now, just in my spare time, so to speak. I wanna do it in surround sound. It’ll have to be in surround sound for Saturn to work.” What are you expecting from Dr. Dre’s new material? Share your thoughts in the comments! Related Artists Dr. Dre Eminem
