Lil Wayne Talks Eminem, Drake And Prison Life

‘Every time I pick up the phone to dial a number, I feel like I’m a bother, because I’m in jail,’ he tells Hot 97 of keeping in touch with friends and family. By Hillary Crosley Lil Wayne (file) Photo: MTV News Lil Wayne called in to New York’s Hot 97 radio station Tuesday evening (August 3) from Rikers Island to talk about his time behind bars, hopeful collaborations and his upcoming EP, I’m Not a Human Being, due in September. Wayne started his sentence on gun charges in March and is scheduled for release in November . “I’m calling you from Rikers Island right now, unfortunately,” Lil Wayne said over a crackling phone line to Hot 97’s Funkmaster Flex . When asked about the support he’s received from fans while in jail, he said, “It’s been more than amazing. I promise that I can’t explain the love and support I’ve been getting from my fans. I never knew it was like that, and I’ve been doing this for, what, 16 years? It’s breathtaking.” Wayne went on to remind listeners and fans how to reach him while he’s locked up. “All you have to do is go on my website WeezyThanxYou.com , and I think all of my information is on there where you can write to me, and I get my mail every day,” he said. “I read as much as I can and I respond, and if you want to hear me respond, all you have to do is check back on that same website, and I have a great lady named Karen Civil that puts up my responses, she puts up updates, everything is on there. Some people might faint when they see their name on there, and they be like, ‘Oh my God!’ It’s a great thing.” He also shared what he’s been listening to — and not listening to — during his jail time. “I’ll be very honest, Flex: I don’t listen to no music. All I listen to all day, if I am listening to anything, is sports. And that ain’t because of nothing, just the simple fact that I’ve never listened to anyone else’s music but my own, and since I’m not able to do that up in here, I don’t listen to anything. I don’t listen to nothing but my thoughts.” Wayne has at least checked out Eminem’s latest album, Relapse, which he’s featured on. “Em is him, and he’s back in a major way,” he said. ” … As far as Eminem the dude, he’s a great dude. He’s been keeping up with me since I’ve been in here, and I appreciate his support.” The rapper later said he’s “a sports fanatic” who “played football and baseball, and I played football more than baseball, but I never was any good, so it’s nothing to speak about. I just have a great knowledge of the game.” Wayne had a few thoughts about dream collaborations upon his release. “I’ve been saying to myself that I really want to do a song with either Andre 3000 or I really like my man Tech N9ne from the West Coast,” he said. “Other than that, I’ve been trying to do a song with this little dude Weezy; he’s stupid.” Wayne said he stays scarce when it comes to keeping up with Young Money stars Drake and Nicki Minaj. “I call Drake at least once a week, but I actually call three or four times a week, but he only picks up for me once a week,” the MC said with a laugh. As for calls to Minaj, he jokingly said, “That being my future wife, we talk every night. Nah, the same goes for her. I don’t like to bother them in the midst of what they’re doing, because I know they have a whole lot on their plate every single day. That’s my thing with everybody. They be like, ‘Why haven’t you called me?’ But it’s because I don’t want to bother. Put in this position, I just feel like every time I pick up the phone to dial a number, I feel like I’m a bother, because I’m in jail. I don’t have nothing else to do but talk to you, and that might not be what you want to do at the time. I don’t know if that’s just a conscious thing, but … I always feel like I’m bothering. I call Mack Maine every single day, and I know I get on his nerves, but he answers every single time.” Wayne went on to describe a typical day in Rikers. “I wake up around 12 noon, I jump on the phone, call Mack, call family, call my mother, call my kids — you know I got a lot of kids to call,” he said with a dry laugh. “After that, once I start reading that fan mail, literally, I could read it all day, every day because it’s so much. That fan mail knocks off like four, five hours of the day. And then I do dinner — whatever that may be in here — I jump on the phone again, and after that, I’m through.” As for what he’s learned from his stint in prison, the MC said he’ll “definitely move more carefully. I’ll definitely take heed to my situation and my status. I mean, when I ask myself … everybody says that you’re here for a reason, and I promise you, Flex, I try to find out that reason every day. I search for it. But I think when I get out, that’ll be the only time I’ll really know the answer. Every day I look for that reason.” As for Wayne’s upcoming EP, it’s on the way. “Yes, it’s gonna drop before Carter IV, only on the Internet,” Wayne said. “This is stuff that I recorded right before I came here.” As the jail phone beeped its warning that Wayne’s interview was coming to a close, the MC thanked all his fans for their support. “I don’t want the phone to hang up on us, so I want to say thank you to all my fans, and I love you, Flex, for giving me this opportunity,” he said. “I appreciate what you’re doing, Flex. Keep doing it.” What do you think about Lil Wayne’s comments from prison? Let us know in the comments. Related Artists Lil Wayne

‘American Idol’ Auditioners Weigh In: Jennifer Lopez Or Steven Tyler?

‘Idol’ hopefuls at New Jersey tryouts are split on who should sit at the judges’ table. By Kara Warner, with reporting by MTV News staff Jennifer Lopez Photo: Kevin Mazur/WireImage It seems like every day brings some new bit of “American Idol” insider information or speculation. With the ratings juggernaut being down two judges — Simon Cowell and Ellen DeGeneres — and the future uncertain for Kara DioGuardi and Randy Jackson , the rumor mill has been in overdrive. The first round of rumored replacements — Elton John, Justin Timberlake and Jessica Simpson — have fallen through, and Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler’s names have since dominated the conversation. Following up on fans’ reactions to DeGeneres’ exit and Ryan Seacrest’s recent comments that the judges might not be officially in place for weeks, MTV News hit up the “Idol” auditions in New Jersey on Tuesday (August 3) to see what the aspiring singers had to say about who would make the better judge: Lopez or Tyler. “Steven Tyler,” “Idol” wannabe Lindsey Laird said without hesitation. “Because he’s awesome. He’s from Aerosmith. That’s amazing.” Devon Michael sided with La Lopez. “That would be such an honor to stand in front of Jennifer Lopez after watching her for so many years,” he said. “She’s just versatile. She dances, she sings, she acts — it’s really admirable. She’s an inspiration to all the people here.” “I know who would be better looking,” Ben Anderton teased, before putting his support behind Tyler. “I actually think Steven Tyler would [be a better judge]. He’d give better feedback to the contestants about performance. The guy is a fantastic performer.” The Lopez fans, including enthusiastic supporter Shannon Leet, cited the “Jenny From the Block” singer’s versatility as one of her strongest qualifications. “I’ve wanted to meet her since I was a little girl,” Leet explained. “She’s an entrepreneur, actress, singer, dancer — she’s amazing.” Those in the Tyler camp were equally insistent, however, even if their enthusiasm had them thinking Tyler and Lopez were already on the audition premises. “I can’t wait to see him. I want to try and impress him,” Freddie Sosa said. “To me, he’s like a legend. I love his songs, I love his band. I’m looking forward to seeing him.” What do you think of Lopez’s and Tyler’s possible spots on the “Idol” judges’ table? Share your replacement ideas in the comments! Josiah Leming Returns, Reinvigorated, With Come On Kid

‘I know I’ve still got a lot to prove, but I’m ready,’ the ‘American Idol’ castoff says of his debut, due September 14. By James Montgomery Josiah Leming on the cover of his album Come On Kid Photo: Warner Bros. Josiah Leming knows you’ve probably forgotten about him. After all, there was a time not that long ago when he had forgotten about himself too. “Absolutely, people have forgotten me, and rightfully so. I haven’t given them too much to think about,” he laughed. “I basically disappeared for a while. I had let the momentum drop. I hadn’t been writing. I was stubborn, and I was not prepared to fully dedicate myself to this. I had completely lost touch. And then, three little words popped into my head.” Those words were “Come On Kid,” a mantra he kept repeating to himself as he fought to rediscover the spark that had made him a standout on “American Idol” back in 2008 (despite not even making the top 24 ) and earned him an unheard-of contract with Warner Bros. Records soon after. Eventually, the phrase drove him to ditch his two-bedroom apartment in Los Angeles, disconnect from all the distractions — both external and internal — that had kept him from finishing his Warner full-length, and, as he puts it, “re-center himself.” And for all of those reasons, there was really nothing else Leming could call his debut, which will finally see the light of day September 14. It’s an album that showcases not only his skills as a singer/songwriter (which were pretty apparent early on ), but his newfound sense of maturity too. And that, really, was the key all along. “A lot of people that get off ‘Idol’ and jump into a contract don’t think there’s any more development to be done, since there’s a fanbase now. And I was definitely like that,” he said. “I was a little cocky, I wanted it all right away, and [Warner] realized they needed to develop me. They told me that I needed to keep writing, that I needed to be ready mentally, and that there was really no choice but to wait until I was ready. “But I kept writing songs that I liked, and the label liked them, too, but they just didn’t feel like there was a single for radio, so they didn’t want to put an album out,” he continued. “And I was getting more and more frustrated, because, really, I wasn’t ready to do the work. Like I’ve always done, I wanted to run. When I was young, I ran away from home. After ‘Idol’ didn’t work out, I ran from that. And I wanted to run from this. But, luckily, I didn’t.” Leming said he had an awakening last summer, after his mother died following a lengthy battle with cancer . He realized he had no other options, that making music was his dream, and he was about to blow a tremendous opportunity. Inspired, he parted ways with his previous management team, got back to writing and told the label that he was finally ready to work. “I just realized that I was meant to do this, there was no other plan,” he said. “So I sat down and figured out how I was going to make this work.” And the end result is, finally, Come On Kid. While its release should be triumph enough, the newly invigorated Leming is hitting the road hard to promote it, playing new songs and still aiming for the stars, despite the fact that most folks have forgotten his name. His new mission, he said, is to change that. “I like being the man down, and I know I’ve still got a lot to prove, but I’m ready,” he said. “The dream is still there, and I’ve still got the same lofty and unrealistic goals. Why wouldn’t I? I’m a 21-year-old kid.” Are you rooting for Josiah Leming to make it big? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Josiah Leming

Kaskade And Dragonette Vocalist Team Up For ‘Fire In Your New Shoes’

‘I wanted somebody who was on the pop-electro sound already,’ Kaskade says of choosing Martina Sorbara as his collaborator. By Akshay Bhansali Kaskade Photo: MTV News Earlier this year, progressive house-music producer Ryan Raddon — known to his fans around the world as Kaskade — found himself body-checking pop-music goliaths when his album Dynasty debuted at #5 on the iTunes album download charts, knocking Justin Bieber out of the top 10 that week. The album spent three consecutive weeks in the top 10, an indicator of popular music’s current appetite for faster beats per minute as well as a credit to Kaskade’s own skills. Rick Ross Reveals Hype Williams Will Direct ‘Live Fast, Die Young’ Video

A day after Teflon Don drops, Ross is already back in the studio making new music. By Shaheem Reid Rick Ross Photo: MTV News On Tuesday, Rick Ross celebrated the release of his Teflon Don album with an in-store signing at a Best Buy in Miami and, late, late into the night, a monster bash at the King of Diamonds strip club. The Bawse arrived in style, landing in the parking lot in a helicopter while friends, such as DJ Khaled, waited with his Maybach Music Group artists, including Masspike Miles. When the new-era Rick the Ruler was in New York earlier this week at MTV’s offices, he said he was already recording new material. “I think this go-round was a lot different,” he said about the process of Teflon Don. “I isolated myself from the nonsense and really focused on the music. It’s like my vision was so clear. Just two weeks ago, I was in the studio, and I did seven records that could potentially be more potent than the Albert Anastasia music was. I’m just getting better. The more I go into my craft, the better I get. I’m listening to the choruses I’m writing, the things I’m trying. Maybe it might be because I own four studios now. That might be it. I just got in the studio, with the Olympicks, Lex Luger, J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League. I feel I had so much more to say.” While Ross didn’t exactly reveal where these new songs would land, he hinted that they might find their way on the new Triple C’s LP Color, Cut & Clarity. “You see, I got my brothers Triple C’s with me. Expect some new music real soon,” he said. Ross hasn’t lost focus of his current album, however. He and Kanye West are shooting a video for the single “Live Fast, Die Young” soon. Originally, Ross floated the idea of Spike Lee directing , but he informed us that they have settled on another great. “Yeah, the homie Yeezy, we decided on Hype Williams. Hype Williams will direct ‘Live Fast, Die Young,” he revealed. “Hit me up on Twitter @rickyrozay, and the reason I say that, I tweeted a picture of me and the homie Spike Lee. He came to my birthday party. I was brainstorming, like, ‘We need that different vibe.’ I tweeted a picture with me and the homie Spike. Ultimately, Hype will direct it. But look for Spike to do a Rozay video. I’mma be the first since [Public Enemy’s] ‘Fight the Power’ and the other great [videos he directed back in the day].” Are you looking forward to new music from Rick Ross? T.I. Says He Lost Some Of His ‘Positive Focus’ During Prison Stint

‘Being in that environment and having those daily surroundings, it’s going to affect you,’ Tip tells Complex magazine. By Mawuse Ziegbe T.I. Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Almost immediately after he finished a jail bid for gun charges in March, T.I. set out to reclaim his status as a hip-hop king — hitting the mixtape circuit and huddling in the studio with Lady Gaga and Swizz Beatz . But that doesn’t mean jail wasn’t a serious setback. “It did make me worse in a sense. … Putting me in prison took me off [a positive] path a little bit, and now I’m working to get back on that path — or at least back on the path to the extent that I was before I went in,” T.I. told Complex magazine. Before heading to jail, T.I. was serving part of his sentence by counseling at-risk kids and notched over 200 speaking engagements warning young people about violence on the MTV show “Road To Redemption.” T.I., who is on the cover of the magazine’s August/September issue, says that the jail atmosphere definitely took its toll. “I lost a little bit of my positive focus during that period of incarceration. Being in that environment and having those daily surroundings, it’s going to affect you.” One result was that he actually tuned out when it came to music. “I didn’t listen much to records when I was in there. Music is what I do every day. That made me more homesick than anything,” he said. Instead, T.I. logged lots of TV hours to pass the time. “I watched series like ‘Sons of Anarchy.’ I’m a fan. It’s another form of ‘The Sopranos’ to me. I watched football and ESPN.” But, the most popular show on the cellblock — “True Blood” — held no appeal for him. “I couldn’t really [watch it]. They got into that sh– heavy,” T.I. said. “The whole prison damn near shut down. Everybody left off the yard, like, ‘ “True Blood” coming on!’ They went crazy for it — there’s a bunch of sex in it, so they were tuning in for that.” T.I.’s King Uncaged drops in September. Which collaboration are you looking forward to hearing on T.I.’s next album? Let us know in the comments below! Related Videos MTV News Extended Play: T.I. Related Artists T.I.

Katy Perry’s ‘California Gurls’ Is ‘Infectious,’ Brian Wilson Says

‘I’m flattered that Snoop Dogg used our lyric on the tag,’ the Beach Boys’ co-founder says. By James Montgomery Katy Perry in her music video for “California Gurls” Photo: Capitol Records In 1965, the Beach Boys released “California Girls,” a song that would not only become one of their biggest hits, but one of the most influential rock tunes of all time too. Forty-five years later, Katy Perry dropped “California Gurls,” a song that has quickly become one of her biggest hits , but still has a ways to go in the legacy department. It may very well be on its way — at least according to legendary Beach Boys co-founder Brian Wilson, who, along with Mike Love, wrote the original “Girls” back in the day. In a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times ‘ Pop & Hiss blog , he admitted to being a fan of the song — and a little bit flattered by Perry’s updated homage. “I love her vocal. … She sounds very clear and energetic,” he said in a statement issued by his manager. “The melody is infectious, and I’m flattered that Snoop Dogg used our lyric on the tag. I wish them well with this cut.” Of course, as Pop & Hiss points out, Perry and Snoop probably don’t need Wilson’s well-wishes (though they no doubt appreciate them). After all, “Gurls” is currently spending its sixth week atop the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart — it also tops the brand-new Songs of the Summer chart too — and has already sold more than 2.6 million copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan. So far, Perry has remained mum on Wilson’s praise (she’s basically been tweeting about “Inception” nonstop), and a spokesperson for her label, Capitol, did not respond to MTV News’ request for comment by press time. Justin Bieber Fans Cry, Collide During L.A. Tour Stop

‘We’re all running into each other, bumping each other in the head on accident,’ one fan tells MTV News at the Nokia Theatre. By MTV News Staff Justin Bieber performs in Los Angeles on Tuesday Photo: Robyn Beck/ Getty Images A gaggle of Justin Bieber fans descended on the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Tuesday night to see their pop idol in concert. It was the latest stop on the Biebs’ My World Tour, which kicked off earlier this summer in Hartford, Connecticut . And judging by the response after the show, Bieber definitely delivered. One L.A. fan described the concert experience as “the best day of my life,” and that seemed to be the general consensus from the crowd. “It was amazing,” a tween fan raved to MTV News once the show ended. “I’ve been to, like, every Justin Bieber show in Los Angeles and this was probably my favorite.” Yet another fan revealed that the vibe inside the Nokia was so intense that fans kept bumping into one another. “We were so excited we could barely stand next to each other,” she said. “We’re all bumping into each other. We’re all running into each other, bumping each other in the head on accident. It’s everything [that makes me love him]. You know he has that perfect hair. He has that little hair swoop.” A teen Bieber fan had a confession: “I thought I would never cry. I cried on this concert.” It seems Justin’s performing the ballad “Down to Earth” inspired serious tears. In fact, the song has become something of a fan favorite on the My World Tour, with one admirer saying she loved “when he got up and he was floating on the heart. It was really hot.” By the end of the concert, though, it was clear that many fans couldn’t pin down exactly what it was about Bieber that had made them swoon most. “His smile. His hair — the way he flips it. His eyes. The way he sings, the way he dances,” one fan gushed. “He’s captivating. He’s a performer. He’s all of the world.” Will you buy tickets to see Bieber in concert this summer? Tell us in the comments! Justin Bieber Charms L.A. Ladies, From Toddlers To Grandmas

The My World Tour brought Bieber fever to the Nokia Theatre Tuesday night. By Kelley L. Carter Justin Bieber performs in Los Angeles on Tuesday Photo: Robyn Beck/ AFP/ Getty Images LOS ANGELES — The countdown started early in the night for Justin Bieber’s sold-out show at the Nokia Theatre on Tuesday night. Bieber’s young fans screamed and waved multicolored glow sticks in the air, while their parents stuffed cotton balls in their ears, sipped on wine or text messaged, seemingly oblivious to the growing anticipation by their children. When the two large screens on either side of the stage clicked on and announced that it was almost showtime, the decibel level was off the charts. Fans pulled out their cell phones and began taking silly shots of each other, waving their hands in the air, and at times, singing their favorite Bieber songs in unison. When the 16-year-old finally took the stage shortly before 9 p.m., he dropped down from the ceiling in an egg-shaped apparatus. Neon green lasers shot from the stage, and his face popped up on the screens. Bieber spent the next hour rolling through a number of hits — including “Baby,” “One Time,” “Love Me,” “Favorite Girl” and “One Less Lonely Girl” — all tracks that helped to make the Canadian heartthrob a household name. Bieber also sang a little medley of classic hits, including “Wanna Be Starting Something” by Michael Jackson and “Walk This Way” by Aerosmith and Run-DMC. “I’m so glad everyone could make it tonight. I have the best fans in the world,” Bieber said. “I would do anything to make you smile.” Again, the kids screamed, rightly knowing that he would launch into his track, “U Smile.” Bieber made several costume changes, but he always kept a New York Yankees baseball cap on his head, grabbing it while dancing in front of and next to his backup dancers. The contraption that he first dropped down in changed shapes, at one point it turning into a heart that he boarded. It took Bieber into in the air, as he strummed his guitar and smiled down lovingly at his mostly female concert. “I see a lot of beautiful girls in the audience. You know what? I think I need to get a little closer to you,” he said. And as if on cue, fans as young as 3-years-old and those old enough to be their grandparents cried and flailed their hands about, hoping to get closer to him. Have you seen Justin Bieber in concert?
