Mary J. Blige Brings Backyard BBQ Vibe To ‘Good Morning America’ Set

The queen of hip-hop soul sang new and old hits to a crowd of all ages Friday morning. By Rebecca Thomas Mary J. Blige performs on “Good Morning America” on July 2 Photo: Jemal Countess/ Getty Images It seemed fitting that ABC’s “Good Morning America” had set a picnic table for a Southern comfort food segment they were hosting on Friday morning (July 2), just moments before R&B diva Mary J. Blige took the stage as part of the network’s summer concert series. Yes, it was New York City’s Central Park, but the vibe on the vast stretch of turf was all Fourth of July backyard family barbecue. Spontaneous chants of “Mary, Mary, Mary” went up as a quick survey of the “GMA” crowd revealed fans of all ages. Blige finally showed, opening with the relentlessly uptempo “Just Fine.” Nine studio albums and as many Grammys later, the singer who defined the drama of heartbreak for a generation proved again how far she’s come since the wrenching pain of her My Life days. As if to underscore that point, Mary J. tugged off her ever-present sunglasses midway through the song, smiling knowingly and drawing rousing shouts from the crowd. The hometown girl (Blige grew up in Yonkers, New York) even made a personal bid on behalf of the New York Knicks, trying to woo NBA free agent LeBron James. Next, she moved the set to her most recent LP, Stronger With Each Tear, tearing into the ballad “I Am,” a belly-deep plea to a love, detailing all of the reasons he should stay. Blige seemed to stretch each vowel, lingering on each word: “I just want you to know/ Baby, I love you so/ There is no need to go looking for more/ ‘Cause I’ve got everything you’ll ever need right here!” It’s not just that this R&B soul survivor exudes a hard-won serenity these days, even her instrument has evolved: The raspy edges, once fueled by alcoholic excess, are still there, but the sound is full, strong, and most important, controlled. Blige finished “I Am” seemingly breathless — with the devoted concertgoers filling in her staccato “oh-oh-oh”s — then launched into “Family Affair,” from her acclaimed, multiplatinum No More Drama. Fans weren’t shy about dancing, and Mary did her signature move: bending at the waist with her head bopping. The R&B diva, dressed in a black, bell-sleeve romper paired with knee-high, open-toe gladiator boots — beamed and thanked fans repeatedly for their love. As the clock pushed past the 9:00 hour, the cameras stopped rolling, but Blige kept singing. (“That’s why we love you, Mary!” one fan shouted.) The queen of hip-hop soul confessed that she was especially happy that morning. Blige, who dropped out of high school in her teens, had recently received an honorary diploma, she revealed. “So if I look a little more confident [that’s why],” she added with a laugh. With that, she delivered a poignant, tearful “No More Drama” over spare piano, clutching her abdomen at one point. There were tears, and not just onstage. Share your own experiences of seeing Mary J. Blige in the comments below. Related Artists Mary J. Blige

Lilith Fair Forced To Ax 10 Shows

Sarah McLachlan-headlined festival is struggling at the box office. By Gil Kaufman Sarah McLachlan at Lilith Fair in Calgary, Alberta, on June 27 Photo: David Bergman/ Getty Images In the midst of one of the cruelest summers the touring industry has had in decades, the Lilith Fair announced on Thursday that it was canceling 10 dates as a result of soft ticket sales. The female-centric tour, headlined by founder Sarah McLachlan, made its return to amphitheaters after an 11-year layoff on Sunday in Calgary, but co-founder Terry McBride admitted in a statement that slow box office has forced him to pull a number of upcoming dates. “We are in the midst of one of the most challenging summer concert seasons with many tours being cancelled outright,” McBride said in a statement. “Everyone involved with the tour would like to apologize to the fans and artists scheduled to play in these markets, and express appreciation for all the support for the festival’s return. Lilith remains the only tour of its kind, and we are confident that fans will be amazed by what each date has to offer.” The affected dates are: Salt Lake City (July 12), Montreal (July 23), Raleigh (August 4), Charlotte (August 6), West Palm Beach (August 10), Tampa (August 11), Birmingham (August 12), Austin (August 14), Houston (August 15) and Dallas (August 16). Because of the cancellations, some of the artists who were set to appear later in the tour may be performing in other cities. Fans are encouraged to check Lilithfair.com for updates on lineups. One of the most successful package tours of its era in the late 1990s (1997-1999), McLachlan and McBride decided to bring Lilith — which features a rotating list of headliners — back this year with a roster of tour veterans and a number of new stars. Among the acts taking part this year are: Erykah Badu, Rihanna, Gossip, Colbie Caillat, Cat Power, Selena Gomez, Corinne Bailey Rae, Indigo Girls, Kelly Clarkson, Jill Scott, Heart, Queen Latifah, Norah Jones, Mary J. Blige, Metric, Miranda Lambert, Sheryl Crow, Tegan and Sara, Sugarland, and Janelle Monae. The cancellations come during a summer in which the touring industry — which had record $4.4 billion grosses last summer — is struggling in the midst of a rash of concert cancellations and soft-selling tours. U2 were forced to postpone the latest leg of their 360 Tour when singer Bono suffered a back injury during rehearsals; Christina Aguilera pulled the plug on a summer tour promoting her Bionic album, citing scheduling conflicts; and Limp Bizkit called off its entire slate of amphitheater shows after complaining that they were not appropriate venues for the band. Maxwell also mothballed a leg of his summer tour just weeks before Simon & Garfunkel did the same due to a vocal injury suffered by Art Garfunkel. Related Artists Sarah McLachlan

Miley Cyrus Previews Final Season of Hannah Montana

Between the lack of pants and abudance of simulated same-sex kissing , it’s easy to forget that Miley Cyrus still portrays Hannah Montana on the Disney Channel. That series kicks off its final season on Sunday night and Miley previewed it a press conference this week. “[It’s about] her graduating, and seeing what college is all about and seeing whether she wants to pursue her career or go to school and try to live a normal life,” Cyrus told reporters. “I can’t believe it’s already coming to an end, either. I mean, it just feels like we kind of just started.” Will Miley’s musical makeover negatively affect her TV show’s viewership? Looking back on the series, Miley credits herself for starting a trend. “It kind of has opened so many doors for other artists on Disney, too, to be able to involve music and acting and all that. I definitely didn’t expect it to take off the way that it did, especially so soon.” But we can’t help but wonder: will Miley’s transformation into an adult artist hurt Hannah Montana ? Will she lose viewers, as her latest album clearly lost fans . Cyrus says she can’t worry about that: “I can’t only base my career off of the 6-year-olds. It’s the 16-year-olds, the 26-year-olds, that’s I’m trying to reach for now. That’s not letting the younger kids down. I will continue to do things that will be good for them, too. But, I also have to move on.” Will you move on with her?

In Praise of Typewriters (What’s That?)

Image from Christie’s : Cormac McCarthy’s Olivetti Maybe a blogger shouldn’t be extolling the virtues of a typewriter, but there is a lot to be said. Such as how environmental they are… Yes, they do use paper…. but that’s it. They last forever; they are pretty simple and straightforward in their composition. There are few fiddly parts to be endlessly upgraded. The manual ones require physical prowess to make that satisfying return of the carriage. Some, like the Olivetti, have become de… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Kris Allen Explains ‘Weird’ Video Treatment For ‘The Truth’

‘There is a concept, kind of,’ former American Idol says of the video for his next song. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Jim Cantiello Kris Allen Photo: MTV News Kris Allen admits that when fans listen to his duet with Train frontman Pat Monahan, “The Truth,” it may come off as some sort of romantic duet. But he explained that there’s another way of looking at it. And he hopes that when the video is shot, that other, less romantic take on the song is made clear. “There is a concept, kind of. I got sent a video treatment by the same guy who did ‘Live Like We’re Dying’ [director Marco Puig] and it sounded interesting,” Allen recently told MTV News. “So I think it’s gonna happen. He’s really creative. I really like him [and] it’s a really weird treatment. In some way [Pat will be in the video], yes. The way that he was gonna be involved was not [romantic]. It kind of made sense.” Despite what anyone might think of the song’s meaning, Allen says the fans have been liking it. “We played it Atlanta the other night and people were freaking out about it. I think people really enjoy it,” he explained, adding that the jury on Allen and Monahan is still out about the song’s message. For instance, when the guys sing “I still keep your photographs/ I remember how we used to laugh/ I can keep on losing sleep/ If you’re OK with being torn in half,” could they be singing about each other? “We were talking about this other day. I think it’s more of maybe an experience thing or maybe we have dated the same girl and she did the same thing to both of us and now we’re in the broken boyfriend/girlfriend club,” he said. And if fans are hoping for some new music from Allen sometime soon, Allen says he’s working on it. “I am, you know, a little bit now,” he revealed. “We’re in the mode and we have a schedule. There’s a couple things out there. I’m excited about it. I would love to bring [the band to the recording sessions] if they would like to. That would be really cool.” Related Videos MTV News Extended Play: Kris Allen Related Photos MTV.com Exclusive: Kris Allen Related Artists Kris Allen

Janet Jackson Says ‘I Love My Life’

‘It took me a good minute to get here, it really did,’ the pop star tells Essence in August cover story. By Mawuse Ziegbe Janet Jackson on the August 2010 cover of “Essence” Photo: Essence Communications To her fans, Janet Jackson would appear to have emerged from an especially taxing year. The pop star just marked the one-year anniversary of brother Michael’s death and, last year, ended her relationship with longtime boyfriend Jermaine Dupri . But despite her personal trials, Jackson recently revealed that she’s in a good place in her life. “It took me a good minute to get here, it really did. But I love my life,” Jackson tells Essence in the August issue hitting newsstands July 12. “I only wish I had this confidence when I was younger.” Although Jackson may have lacked confidence in her early years, the hitmaker maintained that she has no qualms about aging; an outlook the Jackson family matriarch, Katherine, instilled in her and her celebrity siblings. “Mother always raised us to believe that age was just a number. All of us — my sisters, my brothers — we’ll just tell you our ages because it’s all about where you are mentally and how you feel about yourself.” Perhaps Jackson’s attitude is also influenced by the new inroads she’s making in her career. The diva has ramped up her acting work in recent months, pulling off an emotional performance in “Why Did I Get Married Too?” Jackson is also scheduled to begin shooting the star-studded “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf,” helmed by Tyler Perry, and with such co-stars as Whoopi Goldberg and Kerry Washington. The megastar also relished her overall independence. “I’m so fortunate. I’m a free agent. I’m not trapped in a contract where I’m unhappy,” Jackson said. “I’m very free, and I love this feeling. I can do whatever I want.” And while Jackson may not be committing to any recording projects just yet, she isn’t shying away from the stage. The singer is slated to perform at the Essence Music Festival in New Orleans this weekend. Jackson will hit the stage alongside several acts, including Alicia Keys, Mary J. Blige and Trey Songz. Lady Gaga Fans Want Nicki Minaj, Marilyn Manson Duets On Next Album

But some fans hope she flies solo: ‘I want to see her work with no one but herself right now, because Gaga’s Gaga.’ By James Montgomery Lady Gaga Photo: Matt Harper/ MTV News These days, Lady Gaga will tell anyone who will listen that her new album is 100 percent finished, but that she won’t be putting it out until next year. In fact, earlier this week at the kickoff of the North American leg of her Monster Ball Tour in Montreal , she told her “little monsters” that she’s been listening to the new songs before taking the stage, and that she’s simply dying to let her fans hear them. Of course, she followed that statement up by unveiling “You and I,” a song that had leaked to YouTube a few days earlier, which only further whetted fans’ appetites. With so much brand-new Lady Gaga music so tantalizingly close to being released, we decided to ask LG’s fans what they’re expecting to hear on the album — and who, if anyone, they would like to see their Mother Monster collaborate with on the record. We heard a whole lot of the usual suspects — Britney Spears, Katy Perry (though we sort of doubt that will happen anytime soon ), Madonna, etc. — but the fans in Montreal also had some rather, uh, less-than-traditional suggestions, some of which would be positively amazing if they every came to fruition. “I would like to see Marilyn Manson with her,” Nicholas Vansorto said. “She has made a remix with him , but I would like to hear a song with Marilyn Manson and Lady Gaga. It would be amazing.” “Nicki Minaj!” Shareejah Daley suggested. “Nicki Minaj and Lady Gaga would be crazy.” Of course, there are still those out there who think that Gaga’s at her best when she’s flying solo — and that’s exactly what they want to hear on her new album. “I know she’s not going to work with anybody — she’s not going to do any duets,” Genevieve Plante said. “I would like if she would continue on the way of ‘Telephone,’ or ‘Dance in the Dark,’ ‘Bad Romance,’ I would love that.” “I want to see her work with no one but herself right now, because Gaga’s Gaga,” Danik Renaud added. “So there shouldn’t be anyone [else] — other than Beyonc
