Jay Sean Agrees With Usher’s Comments: ‘Longevity Trumps Everything’

Usher recently said British R&B stars like Sean and Taio Cruz ‘have a lot to prove.’ By Akshay Bhansali Jay Sean Photo: Nuzhat Naoreen/ MTV News With two monster singles in “Down” (featuring Lil Wayne) and “Do You Remember” (featuring Sean Paul and Lil Jon) , British pop/R&B singer Jay Sean has delivered for Cash Money Records and his fans around the world. Sean recently invited MTV News into the New York studio of the Orange Factory — the production team behind the majority of his debut album, All or Nothing — to let fans know that he’s already moved on to his next album. In fact, he’s roughly three-quarters done with it. Still, as eager as Sean was to introduce us to the direction and tone of his forthcoming project, he was also aware of some comments lobbied at him by a fellow R&B star. A few weeks back, while on a promotional tour, Usher spoke to MTV UK’s Wrap-Up urban blog and was asked what he thought of the Stateside success of British R&B artists like Sean and “Break Your Heart” singer Taio Cruz. “Sustaining longevity is all about time,” Usher said. “They have a lot to prove.” While Sean could have responded aggressively the comments, he went a different route. “He’s been in the game for, what, 17 years? I completely agree with what he says,” Sean said. “Longevity trumps everything. America has only heard one album. “I’ve only had four Billboard top 20’s in America so far,” Sean said with a smile. “But that’s still new.” Some music fans aren’t even aware of Sean’s chart assault, which gained the attention of Ronald “Slim” Williams, co-CEO of Cash Money Records, and eventually led to his joining the CM roster. “Outside of America, maybe Usher doesn’t know that I’ve been touring and recording for seven years,” Sean said. “This [ All or Nothing follow-up] is my fourth studio album. I’ve had a couple of multiplatinum albums on my own record label. But he wouldn’t know that if he didn’t do his research or nobody told him.” With that said, it appears Sean agrees that a solid career in the music industry is defined by consistency and quality. And he eagerly awaits the opportunity to share his new material with an ever-growing American fanbase. “I’m so new to America,” he said. “I’ve got so much more to show them, so much more to give them.” What do you think of Sean’s music? Could he match Usher’s lengthy career? Let us know in the comments! Related Videos MTV News Extended Play: Jay Sean Related Artists Jay Sean Usher

Kate Nash Covers All The Bases On My Best Friend Is You

‘I don’t really stick to one thing,’ singer/songwriter says about the eclectic sounds on her new album. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Kelly Marino Kate Nash Photo: MTV News Kate Nash is an extremely verbose 22-year-old British singer/songwriter who just released her second album, the extremely verbose My Best Friend Is You, an album that’s long on lyrics (most of them exceptionally funny, tender and/or biting) and even longer on musical influences. Here, in her own rapid-fire way, is her take the album: “How would I describe in a few words? Erratic, in the sense that I don’t really stick to one thing, because as a human being I go through different mood swings. Sometimes I want to do something raw and a bit more punk-y, like ‘I Just Love You More’ to ‘I Hate Seagulls,’ it’s a big difference … and fun, like, I like to have a sense of fun in what I write, and passionate, because I can only really do stuff I care about.” The follow-up to Nash’s 2007 debut Made of Bricks (an album that was a hit in her native U.K. thanks to the success of her single “Foundations” ), Best Friend explores the same lyrical themes as her first album — love, sadness, mean girls, mean boys, her various imperfections and insecurities, BBQ — but it’s the music that’s undergone a drastic transformation. Working with Suede guitarist Bernard Butler, she’s crafted a collection of songs that are delightfully raw, rambunctious and ragged. It’s very much a portrait of a pop princess growing beyond her boundaries, and Nash isn’t too worried about who she alienates because of it. “I think it’s good when people slag you off a bit. … I feel like I’m sort of a bit like Marmite , like, people either really love my stuff or they really hate it,” she laughed. “And I never want to be bland … so this is just sort of the record I wanted to make. It was really how I wanted to express myself and what I was listening to — a lot of riot grrrl, Bikini Kill and Bratmobile and Sleater-Kinney and also, like, ’60s girl groups like the Supremes and the Shirelles.” And all those influences — and a whole lot more — are readily apparent on Best Friend. Whether it’s the first single “Do-Wah-Doo,” the media-baiting “I’ve Got A Secret” (which hints at a lesbian encounter and thumbs its nose at “uneducated people,” according to Nash,) the snarling, strutting “I Just Love You More,” or even album-closing ballad “I Hate Seagulls,” Nash proudly and loudly displays her allegiances. But for all the sounds she packed on the album, perhaps the most stunning moment features nothing more that her voice — it’s the spoken intro to “Mansion Song,” a raw, profane rant against rock-and-rollers and the girls who love them (sample line: “I fancy the hip, rock-and-roll scenester/ I wanna be f—ed and then rolled over, ’cause I’m an independent woman of the 21st century”) that not only shocks, but hints that Nash has a whole lot more to say — and she’ll be saying it for a long time to come. “Well, it’s a reflection on groupie culture, and these young girls selling themselves short and using sex as a way to empower themselves — I don’t know what they’re searching for; they must be feeling insecure to allow these men to disrespect them like that,” she said. “And then at festivals you see them and everyone thinks, ‘Oh, they’re a slag,’ or, ‘Oh, they’re dumb,’ and I think that’s sad, because there is a brain in there and there probably is someone who can do something really interesting and have an opinion and be smart and funny, but that’s the only way the world sees them … or something like that.” Are you excited for Kate Nash’s new album? ‘I got the Bieber fever,’ singer says after appearing with Bieber on ‘Oprah.’ By Jocelyn Vena Charice Photo: Raymond Boyd/ Getty Images ATLANTA — When Gucci Mane was minutes away from ending his six-month bid behind bars , two of his close friends and musical collaborators — Shawty Lo and DJ Holiday — were there. “We waiting for my boy Gucci to come out of jail,” Shawty said with a big grin on his face. “We at the Fulton County Jail, right off of Bankhead. It’s a beautiful day. I got my boy DJ Holiday with me, first on sight. It’s about to go down, man.” “MTV, I told you we was gonna be here, baby,” Holiday said. “It feels good to be here,” Lo continued. “It’s finnin’ to be a very long summer. So MTV, y’all stay tuned. MTV, let’s get it.” Lo and Gucci’s friendship is based on many things, but they definitely have run-ins with the law in common. Shawty said he can relate to Gucci’s struggles in music and with the police. “Basically, me and Gucci, when my career started and Gucci’s career started, we was in the struggle. We was blackballed,” Lo said. “So me and Gucci, we feel like we’re brothers from a different mother. Just to be here, man, it feels good to be here. I been arrested 28 times, and I been convicted four times, so I know how it feels. The hip-hop police got it in [for us]. But at the end of the day, I’m here, thick or thin.” Holiday said that his and Lo’s support is genuine and not for publicity. “I ain’t about getting that look. We’re brothers,” the ATL mixtape king said. Holiday is also signed to Gucci’s label, 1017 Brick Squad. “We family. It’s bigger than that rap stuff. We had to be here. Lo had to be here. I had to be here. I ain’t about that. It’s about friendship and being a man and holding your man down. So if you got anybody down right now, make sure you the first person they see [when they get out] if you really holding them down.” Lo said he’s looking forward to more of his MC friends to come home as well. “We waiting on Weezy and Boosie too,” Shawty said. “Let’s get it.” Related Artists Charice Justin Bieber

B.o.B Collaborator Bruno Mars Talks Long Road To Success

‘I’m not just gonna be coming to you with one sound,’ Mars says of his versatility. By Jayson Rodriguez Bruno Mars Photo: MTV News Bruno Mars is the man of the moment as the Hawaiian-born singer is currently featured on two of the spring’s biggest hits in B.o.B’s “Nothin’ on You” and Travie McCoy’s “Billionaire.” Now, Mars’ debut project, It’s Better If You Don’t Understand, released May 11, should keep his momentum going long into the summer and fall with its mix of earnest lyricism and warm melodies. But despite the usual overnight-star talk, the humble Mars appeciates his years-in-the-making rise to success, which he credits with developing his sound. “It’s great, man — I mean, the fact that it had to take this long, you know,” he told MTV News. “When we wrote ‘Nothin’ on You’ and ‘Billionaire,’ these are songs that are coming from special places. And the beauty of it is, I feel like I’m a unique artist because I like to dabble in a lot of things. The fact that “Nothin’ on You” is working with me signing over this hip-hop track and ‘Billionaire’ is working with me singing over this reggae track, I think it opens up a lane and lets people know I’m not just gonna be coming to you with one sound.” Mars initially made his mark behind the scenes as a songwriter and producer — he was pursuing a recording career and lucked into an opportunity to turn over a song of his to an already signed artist. The chance encounter was so unexpected, though, that he actually wanted to decline the offer. “At the time it was like, ‘No way, this is my art and this is my music,’ ” Mars explained. “They said, ‘We’ll give you $20,000,’ and I said, ‘Here you go, hold that.’ And I kind of became this producer overnight. I never wrote a song before, especially for somebody else — I started writing and producing because I had to eat.” Eventually he joined forces with Phillip Lawrence and later Ari Levine, and now the production trio is known as the Smeezingtons. Prior to scoring back-to-back hits for B.o.B and Travie McCoy, the collective laid down numbers for Flo Rida and Brandy, among others. With Mars’ profile increasing, the Smeezingtons will flex their muscles throughout It’s Better If You Don’t Understand, a four-song EP that features collaborations with Cee Lo and B.o.B. “The journey wasn’t short at all — it was trial and error and trial and error,” Mars said of his current predicament. “It was just back and forth, man. But once ‘Nothin’ on You’ blew up, I had these songs in my back pocket and the label thought it’d be a good time to give people a little taste of what they’re gonna get with the album. The EP came together real nice; you’re gonna get a nice effect of what’s in store.” Are you excited to hear more Bruno Mars music? Let us know in the comments below! Eminem’s ‘Not Afraid’ Enters Billboard Hot 100 At #1

Recovery track is only 16th single to claim that feat in chart’s 52-year history. By Jayson Rodriguez Eminem Photo: Michael Loccisano/Getty Images Add another triumph to the long list of achievements for Eminem . The Detroit lyricist will land atop the Billboard Hot 100 on Thursday, when his latest single, “Not Afraid,” debuts at #1, marking only the 16th time in the chart’s history that a record has premiered in the lead slot. According to Billboard, Eminem has now joined a select group of artists that includes Michael Jackson (“You Are Not Alone”), Whitney Houston (“Exhale [Shoop, Shoop]”), Celine Dion (“My Heart Will Go On”), Lauryn Hill (“Doo Wop [That Thing]”) and Diddy (“I’ll Be Missing You”), among others. Mariah Carey leads the pack with three songs having debuted at #1 on the chart, “Fantasy,” “Honey” and her collaboration with Boyz II Men, “One Sweet Day.” “American Idol” has impacted the charts in a big way in recent years, as tunes by Clay Aiken, Fantasia, Carrie Underwood and Taylor Hicks have also opened in the Hot 100 top spot. And the last artist to accomplish that feat was Britney Spears, whose 2009 hit “3” reached the chart’s summit in its first week. “Not Afraid” is Eminem’s first offering from June 22’s Recovery, the follow-up to last year’s Relapse. Late last month, Eminem announced the single via Twitter, writing simply “I’m Not Afraid.” The song debuted online April 29, and on the track Eminem acknowledged his bumpy comeback after a five-year hiatus, calling his last album “ehh,” before promising better material on the upcoming Recovery. “To the fans, I’ll never let you down again, I’m back/ I promise to never go back on that promise,” Em spits in the second verse. “In fact, let’s be honest/ That last Relapse CD was ‘ehh’/ Perhaps I ran them accents into the ground/ Relax, I ain’t going to do that now.” What do you think about Eminem’s achievement? Britney Spears Confirms Professional Split From Boyfriend Jason Trawick

Spears rep says the pair want to ‘focus on their personal relationship.’ By Jocelyn Vena Britney Spears and Jason Trawick Photo: Lester Cohen/ WireImage Britney Spears and Jason Trawick have decided to go their separate ways, at least professionally. Trawick will no longer serve as Spears’ agent, but the two confirm that all is fine and dandy in their personal relationship. The pair “have decided to end their professional relationship and focus on their personal relationship,” a Spears rep told People.com . And while they continue to dodge rumors of their engagement, a source close to the couple added, “They are very happy. Things are really good with them.” Fans, however, might be happier to hear that Spears is hard at work on a follow-up to her 2008 release, Circus. “Since wrapping her recent world tour, Spears has been busy in the studio working on her next album,” her rep said. While there had been rumors that the album could be released sometime this summer, the fact that she is still working on it means that fans may have to wait a little longer. While details are scant about the new record, buzz about the album has been floating around the Web for quite some time now. Several names are attached as possible contributors to what will be the singer’s seventh studio album. David Guetta is involved, according to Idolator , as well as frequent Britney hitmaker Max Martin, Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins and Sean Garrett. Spears recently had fans salivating over her leaked demo of Lady Gaga’s “Telephone.” The song’s producer, Darkchild, spoke about the work he’s doing with the pop star on the album. “We talked about the direction of her album, [manager Larry Rudolph] gave me some insight into the direction, and he wants me to work on stuff for the album,” he said. The producer went on to assert that he’s very focused on the pop singer, and he’s determined to “write an international smash for her new album. “I think the fans deserve it, I think Britney deserves it and I can’t wait to get back into the studio with Britney. I’m about to go crazy on making something that’s so crazy. Since I’ve had that conversation with Larry Rudolph, I’ve studied some stuff from her last album and the Blackout album, and that was great stuff, but I think I’m going to bring something a little bit greater. I’m gonna give it my all to deliver something that’s crazy, crazy amazing for Britney.” Related Photos The Evolution Of: Britney Spears Related Artists Britney Spears

Drake’s ‘Find Your Love’ Video: What Are The Jamaican Characters Saying?

We decipher what’s going on in the Young Money MC’s latest clip. By Jayson Rodriguez, with additional reporting by Hanif Sumner Photo: Young Money Lost in translation? During Drake’s adventure in the clip for “Find Your Love,” the rapper was warned not to chase the top shotta’s girl — but he still ran after leading lady Maliah Michel. But what exactly was the sage advice he turned down? The thick accents in the video make it difficult to tell — but MTV News got the lowdown. “Consciously speaking, that girl there is trouble,” the elder Jamaican man tells Drake as the video opens. “That girl is going to make you get yourself in serious trouble.” Drake ignores the words and the man gets a bit more serious with his warning. “Hey, skipper, I’m telling you — see if you look at that country side there, at Jamaica,” he says. “That man there named Puffy is a bad man — a bad man. You don’t want to get involved or you’ll be dead. Take me serious, that man is a bad man, mad man — that man kills people. You just come here; you don’t really know it. You don’t want to get involved with him.” The man then assures Drake he doesn’t want to get involved in a world like that and that he should focus on his album and his music. However, Drake still refuses to listen and ventures back into into town to find his love interest. The video then rewinds back to when Drake and Michel first encounter each other; Mavado, who plays the ganglord, has men on lookout who spot the rapper talking to Michel, his woman. The rude boys watch Drake and their boss’ girl leave the party for a romantic liaison on the beach. After the pair take off, one of Mavado’s goons races via motorcycle to tell his boss about what happened. They talk about the “brown boy” who has been in town causing trouble. “Get my dog them,” Mavado tells his underling. “Tell them we are going on the road.” As Drake arrives at the house Michel is located in “Gully Side,” Mavado and his men creep up behind him and capture the rapper. The final scene features Drake bound by rope as Mavado coldly informs him he’s crossed the line. “Aight, so you want come to Jamaica and look at my woman? You hear me. Here. Done. Do it,” he says as he hands the gun over to Michel to finish Drake. “Anything you want that’s in Jamaica belongs to the gully cat.” Did you think Drake perished at the hands of his leading lady? Drake Was ‘Fearless’ In Making ‘Find Your Love’ Video, Director Says

‘It’s kind of like the anti-love love story,’ Anthony Mandler says. By Jayson Rodriguez Drake Photo: Young Money Entertainment As both a newcomer and budding superstar, Drake draws a high level of scrutiny toward himself with each new song or video he releases. That trend continued Tuesday (May 11) with the premiere of his latest clip, “Find Your Love,” directed by Anthony Mandler. “It’s unbelievable the amount of attention that he garners,” Mandler told MTV News. “Since the video dropped, I think I’ve received 200 e-mails, Facebook questions, tweets. There’s a fascination with him and there’s certainly been a void in music that he’s come to fill.” According to Mandler, Drake’s allure lies in his ability to fit in across various groups. That idea was at the heart of the two clips he’s helmed for Drake, “Over” and “Find Your Love.” For their collaboration, he explained, the two played against the convention of who Drake may or may not be. “I think part of that is the kind of way he works across genres, the way he works across tonalities: is he black, is he white, he’s aligned with Wayne and the streets, but he’s a nice guy from Toronto,” Mandler said. “And that really was the theme with ‘Over.’ Especially with the album and the dualities in the music to come, in one song he rhymes and another song he sings, the artists he working with — he’s very hard to pin down. Part of the objective of making this video was to do that same twist again, to give you something unexpected, not only tonality with the song but with the video thematically. It’s kind of like the anti-love love story.” In the video, Drake is advised to get out of dodge when he tries to woo the love interest of a local gang lord. He ignores the words of the elder Jamaican sage and instead ventures into the ghettos of “Gully Side” to see his leading lady once more. As Drake and the man speak, words run across the screen warning of the perils of unknowingly taking things too far. “It’s really about crossing lines, what was said in the first scene,” Mandler said about Drake’s chase for love. “It’s about really understanding what’s right and what’s wrong and it’s really easy to lose that when you’re the center of attention.” The director said the idea of “Find Your Love” was to serve as a follow-up to “Over,” which he felt helped to clear the slate of everything pre- Thank Me Later, Drake’s forthcoming debut album. The idea behind “Find You Love” was to feature visuals to begin a new story in the young rapper’s life. Mandler applauded Drake’s efforts in making the clip happen. “He did it fearlessly,” Mandler beamed. “He did it without any sign of hesitation. That was incredible. He wanted to do something that went further with the song, that took the essence of the song but communicated it with imagery that made people think, rather than go up the middle and make an obvious R&B video. That’s completely not who Drake is.” What do you think the story behind Drake’s video? Let us know in the comments! Related Videos Storyllne Videos: Drake, Lady Gaga, M.I.A

Courtney Love Gives Frances Bean Boyfriend Advice Via Twitter

Hole frontwoman reaches out to estranged daughter, 140 characters at a time. By James Montgomery Courtney Love Photo: Andy Sheppard/ Redferns Early Monday morning, Courtney Love had what she referred to as a “Twitter relapse,” and, boy, was it a doozy. While most of the world was asleep, the Hole frontwoman — who, in recent weeks, has embarked on a rather thorough career rehabilitation plan — launched an all-out Twit-missive toward her estranged daughter, Frances Bean, of whom she lost legal guardianship late last year. Love tweeted Frances nearly 40 times over the course of an hour. In the tweets , Love gives her daughter a whole lot of relationship advice (“don’t have an assistant as a boyfriend”), begs her to “clear my name,” apologizes for not marrying a man who may very well be Edward Norton, says she misses spending time with her and concludes by saying she’s going to go chant (and delete “half” of the messages). The impetus behind the outburst was apparently a photo Love saw of Frances holding hands with her boyfriend backstage at last month’s Coachella festival. “Bean, I saw you at Coachella with [her boyfriend, who may be named Isaiah] in a pic. He looks sweet and like your dad actually,” Love wrote. “I hope he takes care of you and you look beautiful, even though you have an angry furrow. … I think that’s called your ‘lawyer lie’ furrow.” And from there, Love started picking up steam, writing that she “won’t tolerate” being named on “worst mothers lists” and that she plans on fighting for Frances, even if it means going to court. “The last thing I look forward to in this life is any trial, but I’m a good mother and I won’t allow you to believe such nonsense, so suit up,” she wrote. “I love you, sorry to take to the world wide Ethernet, but I love you and I don’t know how to tell you without telling one of the pack, madly.” After that, she went back to weighing in on Frances’ relationship with her boyfriend, warning that if he treats her wrong, “I’ll get him.” “There’s plenty of fish in the sea lining up for both of us, who will treat us like princesses and not 2nd class citizens, or damaged goods,” she wrote. “I know you have that in you, if he’s not treating you like the goddess you are, baby, get the hell out, do not settle. Give them a little time, and if they don’t man up, then woman out. That’s my advice to you. And don’t date a slave, or an assistant, that’s no fun.” Love then apologized to Frances “for not marrying E.” In the late ’90s, she dated actor Edward Norton and was reportedly engaged to him, so that may be to whom she’s referring. Then she rattled off a list of do’s and don’ts for making a relationship work, including: “Make sure you laugh a lot, and try to have a spiritual connection,” “Don’t get him presents and don’t vie for him, don’t over text,” and “don’t take any sh– from that boy. … If he’s not a prince and a MAN, he doesn’t deserve you, period.” Love concluded by writing that she “prays” for Frances every day, and that she “miss[es] [her] more than anyone has ever missed anyone.” She apologized for using Twitter to reach out to her daughter and said that she did so because “the boy stuff you need to hear only from me. … Wendy [Kurt Cobain’s mother, and Frances’ court-appointed guardian ] is too boy crazy.” A spokesperson for Love had no comment about the incident when contacted by MTV News. Does Courtney actually have some good points in her messages to Frances Bean? What would you do if your mother tweeted you advice this way? Sound off in the comments.
