Diddy Paid A Quiet Visit To See Lil Wayne In Prison

‘No one knew [he was here] until it was time for him to leave,’ our Rikers Island source says. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Sway Calloway and Rahman Dukes Lil Wayne Photo: MTV News Lil Wayne has been behind bars for almost two months now, and he’s managed to make headlines as if he never went away. The rapper made waves earlier this week for having headphones, a charger and a watch that doubles as an MP3 player in his jail cell, according to a source at Rikers Island who spoke to MTV News. And last week, Diddy visited the Cash Money Records superstar in jail. But according to the same Rikers source, the Bad Boy mogul made more noise in the papers than at the prison facility. “No one knew [he was here] until it was time for him to leave,” the source told MTV News. “You know, also, a lot of the time people don’t want to seem like they’re stargazers, the officers.” Diddy has yet to comment about his Lil Wayne visit. The rapper has picked up a job while at the Eric M. Taylor correctional facility, but with his recent infraction, he may be stripped of his duties as suicide-prevention aide. Prior to his violation, the Rikers Island source said Lil Wayne has blended in with the rest of the prison population. “It’s just day-to-day business, nothing different than anything else,” the source said of the New Orleans MC’s activities. “You got to understand, this is a different type of atmosphere. It’s not like the prisons where you go upstate, to Sing Sing or places like that. This is a medium-security [population], not maximum security.” Are you awaiting Lil Wayne’s release? Mary J. Blige To Star In Nina Simone Biopic

Film focuses on Simone’s relationship later in life with her assistant. By Kara Warner Mary J. Blige Photo: Getty Images Fresh off her role in Tyler Perry’s “I Can Do Bad All by Myself,” Mary J. Blige has signed on to play legendary crooner Nina Simone in a biopic of her life. According to Variety, the film — currently titled “Nina” — focuses on Simone’s relationship later in life with her assistant Clifton Henderson, who will be played by David Oyelowo (“The Last King of Scotland”). Although this will be the first major leading role for the Grammy winner, Blige has been flexing her acting muscles since 1998, when she played Ola Mae on “The Jamie Foxx Show.” Since that appearance, Blige has guest-starred in episodes of “The Ghost Whisperer” and “Strong Medicine,” and her other film credits include “Prison” and “Angel: One More Road to Cross.” Musically, Blige is a fitting choice to play Simone, who was known as “The High Priestess of Soul.” She certainly has the chops to take on the singer/songwriter’s sultry lower register on jazzy songs like “My Baby Just Cares for Me” and “I Put a Spell on You.” If the film does stay focused on the storied singer’s later life, it will be interesting to see how far the filmmakers delve into Simone’s emotional and mental struggles with multiple-personality disorder and schizophrenia. “Nina” is set to begin shooting in September in France. The script is penned and directed by Cynthia Mort, who wrote “The Brave One.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Greyson Chance Performs ‘Paparazzi,’ Chats With Lady Gaga On ‘Ellen’

‘Stay away from girls and be focused,’ Gaga tells the YouTube sensation via phone. By Kara Warner Ellen DeGeneres and Greyson Michael Chance on “Ellen” Photo: Warner Bros. Meet the newest YouTube sensation: Greyson Chance. Thanks to his performance of Lady Gaga’s “Paparazzi” nearing 9 million views (one of those being Ellen DeGeneres), Chance is an overnight celebrity and found himself taking his first-ever plane ride to meet the comedienne on her daytime talk show Thursday (May 13). “I was sitting in math class when I got a text from my mom: ‘Call me ASAP,’ ” Chance told DeGeneres of hearing the news he was wanted on the show. “This was my first flight, so I was really scared. … I’m still taking it all in.” Of his newfound fame, the sweet-faced Bieber look-alike coyly admitted that girls at his school have started paying more attention to him: “Let’s just say I’ve gotten a couple of numbers and made some new friends.” In addition to covering Gaga, the aspiring songwriter has written two original songs called “Broken Hearts” and “Stars,” which are also posted on YouTube. ” ‘Stars’ is about a wife who dies of cancer, and she goes into the stars and her husband shortly after goes into the stars with her,” he said. “I just kind of felt it. ‘Broken Hearts’ I lived. [It’s] about two girls in particular. … I tried to make some pretty powerful hints into it, but I’m not going to say their names, of course.” Regarding the now-famous “Paparazzi” cover, the 12-year-old said the song choice was a natural one, given that his number-one inspiration is Lady Gaga. “I love how she’s so different, and she takes her individuality and her amazing talent and makes great songs that are catchy and that make you want to dance and maybe throw out some Ellen moves you have. I just love her individuality, the way she can harness that with her talent.” Then Ellen surprised Chance by introducing Gaga herself, who was waiting on the phone line. “Hi, Greyson!” Gaga said. “Hi, Miss Gaga!” Chance stammered, his surprised smile a mile wide. Ellen then asked Gaga if she’d seen Greyson’s video. “I did,” she said. “You’re so sweet and so talented, and I was so excited that you covered ‘Paparazzi,’ and everyone loves you so much. Keep following your dreams and work really hard and stay away from girls and be focused.” Gaga then said her goodbyes and wished him luck on his live “Paparazzi” performance on “Ellen,” which he did just after hanging up with Lady G. We’re thinking this won’t be the last we see of Greyson Chance. He’s scheduled to perform in his hometown’s summer production of “Oliver!” pending any upcoming record deals, of course. What do you think of Greyson Chance? Could he become as famous as Gaga? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Lady Gaga

Stone Temple Pilots Roar Back With ‘Between the Lines’ Video

Druggy clip has ‘an off point of view,’ Scott Weiland tells MTV News. By James Montgomery, with additional reporting by Kelly Marino On The Set Of ‘Between The Lines’ Video Photo: MTV News As anyone who caught Stone Temple Pilots’ recent run of shows can attest — which kicked off with a thunderous set at South by Southwest in March — after more than five years on the shelf, the alt-rock demigods certainly haven’t lost a step. But if you weren’t lucky enough to catch the first string of shows, don’t fret: Next week, STP will launch the second leg of their U.S. tour, which runs through June 5. (They’ll spend the summer darting across Europe, before returning to the stage in August.) On May 25, the band’s self-titled sixth album is due — their first since 2001’s Shangri-La Dee Da — and it features the snarling first single “Between the Lines.” Chances are, you’ve heard it, since it sits at #1 on Billboard ‘s rock chart. And now, there’s a video to go with it, a burner directed by Christopher Sims, who has helmed clips for the likes of Staind and Jimmy Eat World. And yes, it stands as further proof that STP are back. MTV News was on the set of the video, shot last month in Los Angeles. Much like the song, it’s a sweaty, claustrophobic affair, documenting frontman Scott Weiland’s past history of drug use. Portions of it were shot in gloriously blurry, swirly first-person, much like another debauched, druggy classic. “It’s sort of like an off point of view, similar to [the Prodigy’s] ‘Smack My Bitch Up,’ ” Weiland told MTV News. “[It] was one of the coolest videos that came out in the last 15 years.” But while the video does recall clips from the past, what’s most notable about it is how much it feels like classic STP. Weiland, the DeLeo brothers and drummer Eric Kretz flail and hammer with artful abandon, and the song, with its chain-saw guitars and Weiland’s trademark gruff yowl, sounds like it could’ve been lifted from any of their previous albums. It’s a welcome return, to be certain, one that’s indebted to the past, yet deeply rooted in Weiland’s personal travails — something he’s not shying away from this time out. “The verse is sort of an ‘I Am the Walrus’ kind of thing, where it’s a bunch of stuff that phonetically sounds good,” he said alluding to the Beatles song. “And then you get to the meat of the idea in the chorus … it’s a reference to my ex. It’s a real rock-and-roll song that has our own individuality.” How does the “Between the Lines” video compare to the Prodigy’s ’97 clip? Share your take in the comments! Lil Wayne Could Serve More Time Because Of MP3 Player In His Cell

‘You lose some ‘good time,’ ‘ our source at Rikers Island says of contraband found in Wayne’s cell. By Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Sway Calloway and Rahman Dukes Lil Wayne Photo: Derrick G A source at Rikers Island confirmed reports that Lil Wayne was busted Monday for having headphones, a charger and a watch that doubles as an MP3 player in his jail cell. The offense isn’t extremely serious, but it could mean more prison time for Wayne. “You just get an infraction, a violation,” the source told MTV News. “You lose some ‘good time.’ “It depends on the severity of the infraction,” the source added about what other type of trouble Weezy could get into. “Level one is the worst. Then you have [level] two or three. [This infraction] could be a level one. He has to go on trial, and based on evidence, they’ll make their determination.” Our source also confirmed that Wayne has a job as a suicide-prevention aid, which entails staying up at night to keep an eye on at-risk inmates. “He checks each cell or area to see if each guy is alive. There are three shifts,” our source said. “I think his shift is at night, like 11 [p.m.] to 7 [a.m.] or 12 to 8.” That job is now in jeopardy due to the infraction. In 2007, Lil Wayne was arrested for attempted gun possession following his first headlining performance in Manhattan at the Beacon Theatre. New York is among the toughest states in the country when it comes to gun-possession laws. In other states, Lil Wayne could have gotten off with a misdemeanor rap and probation. However, in New York, only law-enforcement officials and those affiliated with authorities are permitted to carry firearms. The rapper was sentenced to a year in prison in March. Kanye West Premieres Photos Of Michael Jackson’s Neverland

Pics from upcoming ‘Neverland Lost’ book are featured on KanyeWest.com. By James Montgomery Michael Jackson Photo: Eamonn McCormack/ WireImage On Thursday morning (May 13), Kanye West took to his website to post a series of photographs taken from the upcoming book “Neverland Lost: A Portrait of Michael Jackson ,” which gives fans an intimate look at the late King of Pop’s life through his expansive collection of pop art, clothing and artifacts. The series of more than 60 shots — taken by acclaimed Swiss photographer Henry Leutwyler — showcases just a portion of Jackson’s vast collection, but it’s a fascinating glimpse nonetheless: gilded statues, cherubs carved from marble, oil paintings depicting Jackson as a medieval prince, Disney figurines. That’s not to mention up-close shots of MJ’s famous bejeweled military outfits, dance shoes with his name scrawled on the soles and rhinestone-covered gloves. Included with the photographs on Kanye’s site is a message from Leutwyler, which explains the impetus behind the “Neverland” book. “It is said that the pharaohs built tombs to reveal their lives to future generations. Michael Jackson sacrificed his childhood to the calling of his musical gift,” Leutwyler wrote. “Neverland was the pyramid he constructed to a lost childhood. The artifacts captured in this book return us to the Neverland he lost.” West — who, in recent months has been keeping a low profile as he finishes work on a new album — also added his own message, thanking Leutwyler for sharing the photographs with him and paying tribute to Jackson, a man he considers to be musical royalty. “Thank you, Henry! I’m grateful to be premiering your photos. The book is an amazing document of Mike’s treasures,” West wrote. “His clothes, art, and artifacts express the essence of the greatest pop icon of our time. Mike truly was a King!” Related Videos ‘Michael Jackson’s This Is It’ Premiere Special Michael Jackson’s MTV Moments Related Photos The King’s Palace: Michael Jackson’s Neverland Ranch MTV News’ 2009 Men Of The Year: #1 Michael Jackson Family & Friends Say Goodbye To Michael Jackson Related Artists Michael Jackson Kanye West

B.o.B Brings ‘Nothin’ On You’ To ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’

Bruno Mars joins Atlanta MC for the late-night show on Wednesday. By Jayson Rodriguez Photo: ABC B.o.B and Bruno Mars took their act to the late-night airwaves on Wednesday night, when the pair performed the rapper’s hit single “Nothin’ on You” on “Jimmy Kimmel Live.” Backed by a band, with Mars on guitar , B.o.B led the set through his syrupy breakout smash dedicated to the pretty ladies. “Hands down, there will never be another one/ I been around and never seen another one,” the Atlanta MC rapped. ” ‘Cause your style I ain’t really got nothing on/ And you wild when you ain’t got nothing on.” Dressed down in jeans, a red jacket, a striped T-shirt and a paperboy cap, the bespectacled B.o.B was boisterous and energetic through his appearance, which also included an acoustic version of “Lovelier Than You,” from his recent chart-topping debut The Adventures of Bobby Ray. Sans Mars, B.o.B. closed out the show with “Lovelier Than You.” “Maybe one day, girl, I pray/ We can float off to space/ Now hold my hand, I’ll lead the way/ And I won’t let go or fall astray,” he sang on the melodic number, while strumming his guitar. ” ‘Cause ain’t no ifs, ands, buts or maybes/ You’re my baby, my lady/ And don’t you worry, baby, please.” Bobby Ray then kicked the accompanying rhyme: “Well, well, well, I say I’m dangerously, dangerously, dangerously in love/ ‘Cause I love her more than I love myself and it’s still that ain’t enough,” he rapped. “If this a dream, I don’t want to wake up/ We go together like the tub and the shower head above.” What did you think of B.o.B’s performance? Daughtry Shows Michael Lynche What His Post-‘Idol’ Future Could Be

Season-five alum Chris Daughtry and his band perform ‘September’ on elimination night. By Eric Ditzian Chris Daughtry performs on “American Idol” Wednesday Photo: FOX On the same night that “American Idol” kicked off Michael Lynche , another fourth-place “Idol” finisher, Chris Daughtry , returned to the stage to show Big Mike that he can still have a bright future as a recording artist. The season-five contestant and his band were welcomed back to “Idol” on Wednesday night and performed “September,” a single off their platinum-selling second album, Leave This Town. Looking not much different than he did upon his “Idol” audition years ago, a bald-headed and bearded Daughtry belted out the slow-burning tune as Lynche and his fellow contestants awaited their fate. Any one of them would be thankful to have even half the success that Daughtry has enjoyed. His self-titled debut hit the #1 spot on the Billboard 200 in 2006 and ended up going platinum four times. Last year, the band’s follow-up disc debuted at #1 and was certified platinum in February 2010. They’re also in the midst of a wide-ranging North American tour that has them playing in huge arenas throughout the country. “It doesn’t get old,” Daughtry later said of playing for large crowds. “It’s an amazing feeling every night, and we’re fortunate that we have fans that want to come out and see us. We don’t take that for granted.” Daughtry also had a piece of advice for this season’s remaining finalists. “Stay hungry and actually don’t compromise the music that you love,” he said. “Stick with what’s true to you.” Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions. Diggy Simmons Isn’t Making ‘Bubblegum, Kiddie-Bop’ Rap

‘I’m really doing me,’ Diggy tells Mixtape Daily of trailblazing dad Rev Run and Uncle Russell Simmons. By Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Sway Calloway Diggy Photo: MTV News Fire Starter: Diggy Simmons Daniel “Diggy” Simmons has his legendary pop’s brash but lovable quality — and it’s most apparent when Rev Run’s son is rapping. “The son of a king, so why would I ever bow down?” he asks on his Internet-famous freestyle “Made You Look (Flow Stoopid).” The young MC, who hasn’t been 15 years old for even four months yet, now has a record deal under his belt and a following on the Net, thanks to freestyles like the aforementioned “Made You Look” and “Diggy What, Diggy Who?!” Not to mention, a much talked-about blog titled “Life of a Jet Setter: The Young Tastemakers Guide” and, of course, a starring role the Simmons family reality-TV series “Run’s House” on MTV. Young Simmons has obviously been around hip-hop all his life. His older brother JoJo raps, Dad is recognized as one of the greatest MCs ever, and his uncle Russell is universally hailed as one of hip-hop’s godfathers. But Diggy doesn’t flinch when he considers the weight of that legacy. “I get a lot of people [asking me about that] in interviews as well,” he said. “They’re like, ‘Do you feel the pressure to uphold the legacy?’ I’m just like, ‘At the end of the day, I know who they are. But I’m really doing me.’ It’s like, I’m not feeling too much pressure, and I like it better that way. And I’ll make it for myself,” added Simmons, who described his upbringing as “normal.” “[Music] was really something I picked up and did on my own,” Diggy explained of getting on the mic for the first time. “I was writing for a while, doing my thing. I was doing joints off my MacBook on GarageBand. I sent it to my boys through iChat. They’d knock a verse out. It was done like that. I released my first track, got a cool buzz around it, and I released some tracks prior to the mixtape [ First Flight ]. That’s when I started pushing the tape. Once I pushed the tape, a lot of people were aware that I was rapping. Since the ‘Made You Look’ freestyle, and a lot of people knowing I signed to Atlantic, now many people know.” Not long after Diggy dropped the “Made You Look” freestyle, he got kudos from Kanye West . And most recently, the guy whose beat he jacked for the freestyle, Nas, gave him props as well. “I couldn’t believe it,” Nas told Vibe, discussing his impressions of the teen. “Run is the king of rap, and for him to have a son who’s that nice? You don’t even think sh– like that happens. I don’t think we’ve seen that in hip-hop yet — he’s nice, and his father’s the king? That’s historic, bro. That sh– is incredible. That little dude is nice.” And Diggy shouldn’t be confused with some other rappers in his demographic. He’s actually winning over fans with his rapid flow, as well as his wordplay. “That’s something I really focus on, because a lot of my inspiration in music, they vary, from Lupe [Fiasco] to A Tribe Called Quest,” said Diggy, who also included Jay-Z and Nas among his favorites. “I love Mos Def. Real lyrical dudes in the game, that’s what I focus on. A lot of the time when you listen to music, you have no focus on what you listen to. “I’m just letting people hear my music now,” Diggy said. “A lot of people are like, ‘Diggy raps? Ah, OK.’ Before they even hear it, they don’t even wanna hear it. They think it’s gonna be some bubblegum, kiddie-bop type of hip-hop. That’s not even the case.” Simmons said he’s working on new material that will show his elevation as a wordsmith, but he’s not yet sure if another mixtape will come before his debut album.
