Courtney Love Recalls Hazy ‘Letterman Years’ On ‘Late Show’

Newly sober singer sat down with David Letterman for first time since 2004 flashing incident. By Gil Kaufman Courtney Love arrives at “The Late Show With David Letterman” on Tuesday Photo: Jeffrey Ufberg/WireImage The last time Courtney Love visited “The Late Show With David Letterman,” she famously lifted up her shirt and flashed the normally unflappable host in one of her legendary shambolic public spectacles. Now 45 and sober, Love stopped by the show on Tuesday night for the first time since that 2004 incident and explained to Letterman that she is a changed woman. “They had to douse me out and clean off and pick all the little things out of my hair,” she said when Letterman sounded shocked at the long gap between their chats. “It started when I came on this one talk show and got on someone’s desk and took my shirt off and danced on it,” Love said, looking down in mock embarrassment. She also revealed that right after the flashing incident, the start of what she called her lost “Letterman years,” Love got arrested that night, and then things kind of went to hell for the next three years. “You’re not blaming this on me, are you?” Letterman asked, concerned. When asked what her “bottom” was, the moment when she realized she needed help and had fallen into the abyss, Love said succinctly, “Your desk.” Probed further about what had prompted her to disrobe during that visit, Love explained, “Drew Barrymore had done it when she was 19, and I was so out of my mind when I did it, I thought I was 19. But I was actually 39.” For his part, Letterman deadpanned, “I enjoyed it. … I don’t want to be what they call an enabler … but it seemed like you were at the top of your game to me.” Love noted that the video of that appearance is still one of the first things that pops up on a Google search of her name. The one-time grunge-pop icon claimed on Howard Stern’s satellite radio show on Monday that she had a torrid eight-month affair with former Bush singer Gavin Rossdale while the rocker was also romancing his now-wife, Gwen Stefani. She was also not shy when telling Letterman about her struggles with illegal drugs. “I did a lot of cocaine back then. I had bad people around me,” she said. “I abused it. There’s nothing else you can do with cocaine.” While in rehab, Love said she wrote apology letters to a number of people who’d been impacted by her drug-taking, among them Letterman; he confirmed that he’d gotten that letter. Saying she is now sober, Love, wearing a demure cream-colored sleeveless top, black skirt and black hose, also claimed to have been addicted to unnamed pills and “everything bad” before entering rehab and getting cleaned up. She is currently promoting the new Hole album, the just released Nobody’s Daughter. What do you think of Courtney Love’s latest revelations? Discuss in the comments. Related Artists Courtney Love

Bret Michaels Is ‘A Gentleman And Friend,’ Says Ratt Drummer

Bobby Blotzer wishes his friend ‘speedy full recovery,’ as Michaels remains in intensive care. By James Montgomery Bret Michaels Photo: George Napolitano/FilmMagic Ratt drummer Bobby Blotzer has known Bret Michaels for nearly a quarter-century, and in that time, he’s had more than his fair share of good times with the Poison frontman. But when Michaels was rushed to the hospital last week after suffering a brain hemorrhage, the memories of those good times took a backseat to genuine concern for his friend’s health. Bret Michaels’ Career In Photos In a statement to MTV News, Blotzer said that he was shocked to learn of Michaels’ hospitalization, and hoped that his friend would recover quickly. “The news of what happened to my friend of 24 years, Bret, came as a shock and with much anxiety,” Blotzer said. “Bret is a gentleman and friend to not only his peers and close personal friends, but to all fans and people around the world. Speedy full recovery soon!” As of Wednesday (April 28), Michaels remained in the intensive care unit at an undisclosed hospital, where he is in stable condition. His father told “Extra” that he had recently spoken to his son and that he sounded “a little slow, but fine.” According to a statement posted on his official Web site Michaels has been undergoing a battery of tests while in the ICU, and that, as a result of the stroke, he has been diagnosed with a condition that could lead to severe seizures. “Test results indicate a setback in Bret Michaels’ condition, a side effect from the brain hemorrhage called hyponatremia; a lack of sodium in the body which leads to seizures,” the statement reads. “Due to the severity of his condition, Bret Michaels continues to remain hospitalized in an intensive care unit at an undisclosed hospital.” Michaels, 47, was taken to the hospital late Thursday night, after complaining of severe headaches. Doctors eventually discovered that he had suffered a subarachnoid hemorrhage , a survivable but serious stroke that causes bleeding in the fluid-filled spaces around the base of the brain. ‘American Idol’ Report Card: Who Nailed Shania Twain Week?

No one flunked outright, but Casey James was the only contestant to impress us much. By Eric Ditzian Shania Twain poses with the “American Idol” Top 6 Photo: FOX Oh, you crazy “American Idol” kids! We’d been worried all day for you. Was the songbook of ’90s country queen Shania Twain the type of “Idol” classroom material that would sink every single one of you? Were we in for a live performance on Tuesday night that would have us harkening back to those ear-bleedingly awful top-24 shows in late February? No and no. Collectively, this was the finest group of performances of the year, and we’re pleased to announce that for the first time, not one contestant notched a failing grade on our weekly “Idol” report. That doesn’t mean we’ve got a bunch of honor students on our hands. In fact, the ranks of the Average Idols have swelled — which is to say that while no one crashed and burned, almost no one soared. Considering how worried we were, though, let’s just be happy with how the whole thing turned out. On to the grades! Excellent Casey James : On Tuesday afternoon, we went ahead and suggested Casey sing “You’re Still the One,” and when Lee went first and busted out that tune, we were worried for Goldilocks. Would he once again try on his rocker hat, even though it has clearly not been fitting for weeks? Nope! Casey has learned his lesson well, because he went slow and acoustic with “Don’t.” From “Heaven” to “Jealous Guy” to last night’s cover, Casey’s wheelhouse really is the smoldering ballad. We think he understands that now. Good Lee Dewyze : One of the hardest things to do on “Idol” is sustain momentum, to follow up one killer performance with another and keep the judges’ praise — those American votes — coming. That Dewyze has followed up last week’s first-rate take on the “Boxer” with a fine, contemporary cover of “You’re Still the One” is cause for applause (even if we did think that song was a better fit for Casey James). The kid has found his niche with an acoustic-guitar-driven, lite indie-rock sound. It’s working well for him. Mike Lynche : While Big Mike’s rendition of “It Only Hurts When I’m Breathing” didn’t go as far in an R&B direction as we might have hoped, at least he indulged that side of his artistic personality. It was no “This Woman’s Work,” but we’ll take it. For the sake of Mike’s future, let’s hope he’s finally ditched that weak-sauce indie-rocker shtick and embraced his R&B soul. Last night’s performance was hardly the stuff of Luther Vandross, as Randy Jackson and Simon Cowell maintained, but it’s a comparison that Mike should take to heart. Average Crystal Bowersox : Remember what we were saying just before about sustaining momentum? It ain’t easy! And perhaps it’s asking a little much to expect MamaSox to equal her best-of-the-season performance last week during “People Get Ready.” But actually, we feel kind of guilty. We suggested Crystal perform “No One Needs to Know Right Now,” and that’s exactly what she did. Unfortunately, she didn’t follow our advice to ditch the song’s country flavor. We warned that Tuesday night would be all about the arrangement. On this front, Bowersox didn’t make the grade. Aaron Kelly : You could see it in Kelly’s eyes: He knew before he even stepped onto the stage that he’s in trouble this week. And after a so-so performance of “You’ve Got a Way,” you could really see that the kid doesn’t want to go home. Who could blame him? Last night, Kelly was as strong as he’s been in the competition, but “Idol” is just that, a competition. If there’s any justice in the reality-show universe, he’ll not only land in the bottom three; this will be the end of the line for this sweet 17-year-old. Siobhan Magnus : We have an idea what Siobhan was thinking when she decided to tramp around the “Idol” auditorium during “Any Man of Mine,” from stage to crowd to stairs and back again: Engage the audience! Have some fun! Her heart may have been in the right place, but what happened in the moment was a young singer struggling to breathe, walk and sing all at the same time. She simply did not look comfortable, and it showed — both on her face and in her pitch. The judges seemed to think Siobhan was back, baby! We have a feeling she’s headed to the bottom three. Justin Bieber, Robert Pattinson Make People’s Most Beautiful List 2010

Katy Perry, Zoe Saldana also make the annual list in this week’s issue. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber Photo: Andrew H. Walker/ Getty Images Teen heartthrob Justin Bieber has managed to find his way onto People ‘s Most Beautiful List for 2010 , alongside such longtime fan-favorite superstars as Julia Roberts and Daniel Craig. What makes Bieber so beautiful? Well, maybe it has something to do with his “swoosh” hairstyle . “I spend five minutes on it,” he explained. “I use shampoo, conditioner — basically whatever is in the hotel — and blow-dry. It’s part of my image. It’s not who I am.” People Magazine’s Most Beautiful Channing Tatum also makes the grade in the issue. And it’s not just his emotional performance in “Dear John” that makes the girls swoon — he also works hard for his abs of steel, which he like to supplement with massages. “Do I get massages? Hell yeah, I get massages!” he said about his workout regimen. “Are you kidding me? I wanna get one right now! Where’s a masseuse?” Fellow action star Zoe Saldana is also on the list. The “Avatar” actress said that she’s discovered some tricks for looking perfect on the red carpet. “I have learned to have at least one arm on my waist,” she said. “And I have also learned not to talk when I’m am posing.” Scarlett Johansson described her simple tools for staying beautiful: “red lipstick and sandwiches.” Jake Gyllenhaal made the cut, as did Jennifer Aniston, Bradley Cooper and Katy Perry. Siobhan Magnus Wins The Judges Back With ‘Any Man Of Mine’

‘Guess who’s back? Siobhan!’ Kara DioGuardi says after the Shania Twain Week performance. By Katie Byrne Siobhan Magnus performs on “American Idol” Tuesday Photo: MTV News Country Week is always a wild card on “American Idol,” either forcing some creativity from contestants working out of their comfort zones or burying them alive. Since Siobhan Magnus is a bit of a wild card herself, she had no problem tackling Shania Twain Week and making it work for her big voice and oddball sensibility. Magnus chose “Any Man of Mine,” keeping a pretty traditional country arrangement but speeding it up a notch. Twain, who opened up her songbook for the week and acted as mentor, warned Magnus that the song is “all about attitude. You’ve got to put some attitude in those lyrics.” Siobhan stayed true to Shania’s vocals for most of the song — until the end, of course. For the grand finale, she let huge notes fly (including one of her trademark screeches) and unleashed some hair-metal-worthy guitars to match. The judges have given Magnus a hard time in the past for either coloring inside the lines or going way overboard. What did they think of this go-round? “I loved it,” Randy Jackson said, kicking off the positive reviews and complimenting her “punk/country” look. “Way to pull the Shania Twain into the station,” Ellen DeGeneres said, continuing her choo-choo Twain joke from her first critique. “Guess who’s back? Siobhan!” Kara DioGuardi enthused. Even Simon Cowell was into it, with one exception: “The screaming at the end may have gone a little bit … it was almost like you were giving birth up there.” What did you think of Siobhan’s performance? Did she get Shania’s “attitude” right? Let us know in the comments! Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions. ‘American Idol’ Shania Twain Night Fits Michael Lynche, Siobhan Magnus

For the first time all year, the judges do not rave about Crystal Bowersox. By Gil Kaufman Michael Lynche on “American Idol” Tuesday Photo: Fox In a season filled with youthful mentors like Miley Cyrus, Usher, Adam Lambert and Alicia Keys, Tuesday night’s (April 27) “American Idol” brought back a country/pop superstar who hasn’t released a new album in eight years. But Shania Twain knows what she’s talking about, since she was a guest judge during the audition rounds and her soft-focus advice to the remaining six finalists helped a few — Michael Lynche, Aaron Kelly and Siobhan Magnus — get back in the thick of the competition, even as long-time front-runner Crystal Bowersox faced her first neutral notices of the finals. First up was barroom rocker Lee Dewyze, who Twain met during the Chicago auditions. He chose “You’re Still the One,” with Twain suggesting he hold off on the guitar at the top and come in more subtly with a piano. Dewyze took her advice, starting off quietly and then rising to sing the everlasting-love lyrics in his signature raspy voice. Admitting it’s one of his favorite songs of all time (really, Dawg?), Randy Jackson said it started out, yes, pitchy but praised Dewyze for finding a way to make it his own by mid-song. “You found your sweet spot,” he said, with Ellen DeGeneres agreeing and saying that Lee’s talent is finding himself in each song. Simon Cowell said Lee picked the absolutely perfect tune from Twain’s catalog but faulted what Kara DioGuardi labeled a smile as a “weird face.” Shania said she was moved by the way Michael Lynche sang “It Only Hurts When I’m Breathing,” reminding him that even though his singing seems effortless, he should remember to imbue it with feeling. Big Mike transformed the tune into a Maxwell-like R&B seduction play, giving the song a gospel flair and throwing in some ear-candy falsetto at the end that brought a tear to Twain’s eye. Ellen compared the emotion Lynche brought to the song to the late great Luther Vandross, and Jackson said Lynche has found his lane as a sensitive balladeer. “I thought the performance, however, was a little bit wet, as if you were in a musical acting out the words,” Cowell said to the rest of the panel’s confusion after agreeing with DeGeneres’ Vandross analogy. “It was a little bit girly for you.” How was construction worker Casey James going to rebound from criticism that he was a bit lazy last week? Encouraging him to let his confidence shine through, Twain was excited about James’ choice of “Don’t.” Sitting on a stool and playing simple rhythm guitar, James sang a straightforward version of the midtempo ballad, stripping away some of his calling-card bluesy grit in favor of a more emotional, mellow rock vibe. “Casey, artists do not hide: the good, the bad, the ugly. They show it all, and that’s what you did in that performance,” said a pumped-up DioGuardi. “And that’s what you did in that performance. You didn’t hide. You didn’t cover it up with guitar. You were vulnerable, you were raw.” Cowell and Jackson also said it was one of the best performances James has given on the show so far, praising him for finally finding his sweet spot. She can do blues and pop, but can season leader Crystal Bowersox do country? MamaSox, who got her guitar signed by Twain during the Chicago auditions, chose “No One Needs to Know,” and Shania said she needed to let the emotion shine through. Backed by simple percussion, lap steel guitar, standup bass and mandolin, Bowersox crooned the tune in a peppy, old-timey country cadence, imbuing it with her particular charm while smiling through lyrics she said she hoped would get her boyfriend to “man up” someday. “Shocker, we don’t like Crystal this week,” Cowell frowned. “It was limp,” he added, comparing it to being forced to listen to a hired band in a coffee shop. “I didn’t feel any conviction from you.” Randy was into the Nickel Creek vibe, even if, like Ellen, he didn’t love the performance. Though Kara said it’s kind of impossible for Crystal to not be good because of her honest nature, she, too, thought it was just OK. Aaron Kelly, 17, has been on the bubble for weeks, and Shania tried to put him at ease about singing “You’ve Got a Way,” telling him to not worry about hitting the notes and just sing the song the way he feels comfortable. Kelly, arguably the most country of the remaining singers, convincingly and confidently sang the expansive ballad, giving one of his most solid performances in weeks. “The amount of emotion and depth that you showed when you sang that song … the maturity you had to embrace those lyrics,” Ellen said. Kelly proved he gets the “Idol” game by explaining that he changed a line about making love because he was singing the tune to his mom, and Kara praised his conviction. “For the first time in weeks, it actually felt sincere, it felt believable,” Cowell said. The final spot belonged to Siobhan Magnus, who went with “Any Man of Mine.” Twain encouraged her to get into the character of a woman who knows what she wants. Though her vocals were typically uneven, Magnus worked the crowd while strutting across the stage in a short flowered skirt and white boots, unleashing a pair of her signature rebel yells to cap off an upbeat performance. Simon, no fan of country music, loved the song, even though he felt the screaming at the end was unnecessary, comparing it to the sounds of a woman in labor. “I loved it!” Randy raved simply, as Kara agreed, saying Magnus was back in the competition. Someone will be sent home on Wednesday night’s show, which will feature performances from Lady Antebellum, Rascal Flatts, Sons of Sylvia and Shakira. By Jayson Rodriguez, with additional reporting by Shaheem Reid and Rahman Dukes Game and The Clipse in “Shake” Photo: Black Wall Street It’s always more fun in California. That’s not the state motto, but the tourism board should consider it after taking a peek at Game’s new video for “Shake,” an MTV News exclusive. In the video, Game, rubs shoulders with a number of celebs, from actress Stacey Dash to Bow Wow to producers Cool & Dre. The opening scene finds Dash gazing out at the beach from the balcony of a secluded property. Game quickly walks up behind her, taking in the view, before backing away into the house again. There, the camera pans to reveal two scantily clad women asleep on the couch. The L.A. rapper then strolls into his walk-in closet — which is a modest characterization. Game’s “closet” is about the size of your local Foot Locker and boasts more sneakers and athletic apparel than the retailer. He sports a pair of Air Jordans and a throwback Michael Jordan jersey and begins his adventure. The ensuing high jinks take Game from behind the wheel of an SUV to riding shotgun in a red Ferrari. Along the way, he stops by Bow Wow’s for a quick pickup, then he’s back on the road. (The contents of the bag the rappers pass from one to the other are revealed at the end.) Tupac’s Mom, Afeni Shakur, Arrested For Drug Possession

She is due back in court in May to face three drug charges. By Mawuse Ziegbe Afeni Shakur-Davis Photo: Annette Brown/ Getty Images Afeni Shakur, the activist mother of late hip-hop legend Tupac Shakur, was arrested for felony drug possession in Lumberton, North Carolina, earlier this month. According to The Fayetteville Observer, the ex-Black Panther was charged April 16 with felony possession of marijuana, simple possession of a controlled substance and maintaining a vehicle, dwelling or place for a controlled substance. Reps for Afeni and Lumberton Police had not responded MTV News’ requests for comment at press time. Since her son was fatally shot in 1996, Afeni has stayed busy upholding his legacy. She founded the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation in 1997, which provides arts and education programs for young people and mounts an annual performing-arts summer camp for youth from troubled homes. Afeni’s Amaru Entertainment was engaged in a legal battle with film company Morgan Creek last year over a movie about the rapper’s life, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Afeni has also managed music from Tupac that was unreleased while the star was alive. Afeni’s battle with drug use is mentioned in Tupac’s hit 1995 song “Dear Mama.” When renovating the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation’s center in 2005, Afeni told MTV News that her tough past was a catalyst for starting an arts foundation. “When Tupac was 13 and I was homeless,” she said, “Tupac was in the 127th Street Ensemble [theater group] right here in New York. Those people, I believe, saved his life. So what we try to do is be that for the next generation of young people.” The Observer reports that bail was set at $10,000, and Afeni is currently out on bond, according to court reports. She is due back in Robeson County District Court on May 10. Related Artists Tupac

Guru’s Sister Talks About His Death, Memorial Plans

Patricia Elam says there may be a public memorial on Gang Starr MC’s birthday, July 17. By Shaheem Reid Guru Patricia Elam, the older sister of late Gang Starr MC Keith “Guru” Elam, said her family learned about his passing through the media — one day after he died. Elam alleges that Solar, Guru’s medical proxy , longtime business partner and musical collaborator, never told the Elams of Guru’s death. “[My son] Justin found out on the Internet and called me. I had to call my dad,” Patricia told MTV News Tuesday (April 27) via phone. “[Keith’s 9-year-old son] KC found out riding in the car, hearing it on the radio. That’s not right if you care about someone. That’s not how you treat them. My brother would never have wanted us to find out that way. Never in a million years. Especially his son. Come on, now.” Solar told MTV News last week that he has “nothing but the utmost respect” for Guru’s family , but acknowledged that the relationship “got weird in the end.” Patricia, said that learning of her sibling’s death was only part of their nightmare. When the family inquired with the hospital as to the whereabouts of Elam’s body, they were told it was on its way to a funeral home to be cremated. “The hospital released the body in [Solar’s] care. I don’t know how it was determined what funeral home it would go to,” Patricia explained. “My son Justin was looking online and saw something that the body was going to be cremated. My father was calling the hospital looking for the body and they were like, ‘We released it to the health-care proxy.’ Luckily my other brother happened to be in New York on something unrelated and he started calling funeral homes in the area, if you can imagine. Fortunately the third one he called was the right one. He said, ‘Listen, I’m the brother of Keith Elam, do not release that body to anyone but me.’ Thankfully he was able to get there in time.” Ms. Elam says that eventually the family did cremate Guru’s body, as it was his wish. “The cremation has already occurred,” she explained. “For our family, we’ll have our own private memorial.” Patricia also revealed that the Elams do understand that Guru’s fans would like to celebrate his life and legacy as well, and that a public memorial for his fans is being discussed that would take place on what would have been the MC’s 49th birthday, July 17. “I don’t have any more specifics at this point in time,” she said. “There’s also talk of a musical tribute; I don’t have the specifics on that yet. We want something for the public and for fans. We’re also working on website so fans can post things. We’ve gotten so many wonderful, loving messages and tributes from around the world. We want fans to have a place for that.” Post your memories of Gang Starr and Guru in the comments section below. Gorillaz To Tour U.S. This Year, Without The Holograms

‘You can’t, at this point, do holograms,’ lead singer Damon Albarn explained. By James Montgomery Photo: MTV News For just about as long as they’ve been a (not real) band, Gorillaz have toyed with the idea of launching a full-blown, hologram-enhanced tour . After all, it seemed like the most logical way of bringing the group to life. The only problem? Well, as you can imagine, lugging all that 3-D equipment around gets to be a tad bit expensive. Oh, and then there’s the fact that, no matter how hard they try, Gorillaz masterminds Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett just can’t seem to get the hologram thing to work the way they want it to. So, while, yes, Gorillaz will be touring the U.S. later this year, if we’ll have them (“We’re coming back, going to play all around America, if they want us, of course,” Albarn smiled), they won’t be bringing the holograms with them. It seems they’ve officially closed that chapter of the band’s history … and they’ve got Madonna, with whom they “performed” at the 48th annual Grammy Awards in 2006 , to thank for that. “You can’t, at this point, do holograms. … This is what happened at the Grammys. We opened the Grammys — on television it looked great — but we had an invisible film pulled across our stage, and you project onto that, and put smoke behind it — it’s a Victorian technology, actually,” Albarn told MTV News. “So Madonna manages to come and sort of gate-crash our idea, as people like Madonna do, because that’s why they’re so deep. … She gate-crashed our idea, so we couldn’t play with any bass or any sound, because it would vibrate [the film] so it was really quiet. “So we open the Grammys, but no one could hear us, in this huge, great arena, and we were crestfallen at that moment. And I’m trying to get Bono to move, because his huge, great Stetson is obscuring my view,” he continued. “And then, our song stops, and she appears on the other side of the stage, with her inflated-ABBA riff, at full volume, and the place goes insane. And at [that] point, I just thought, ‘You know what? Sometimes, just keep it simple.’ ” Which means that fans can expect more performances like their guest-heavy Sunday night set at Coachella , with appearances by the likes of Brit rappers Kano and Bashy, De La Soul and the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble. There’s no word on just when their U.S. tour will kick off. E-mails to the band’s label, Capitol, were not returned by press time, but with all that hologram business now behind them, Gorillaz can focus on putting on a booming, in-your-face set. Which is all fans really want, anyway. “We want it to be powerful, and for people to feel good about it,” Albarn said. “No pun intended.” Will you check out Gorillaz in concert?
