Malcolm McLaren Remembered By John Lydon, Vivienne Westwood, More

‘I don’t think I would have been the singer that I am today if it hadn’t been for him,’ said Bow Wow Wow lead singer Annabella Lwin. By Gil Kaufman Malcolm McLaren (circa 1984) Photo: Lisa Haun/Michael Ochs Archives/Getty Images Musical bomb-thrower, cultural rabble-rouser, fashion icon, ultimate hype man. A day after the death of former Sex Pistols manager Malcolm McLaren from cancer at the age of 64, tributes poured in for the irrepressible self-promoter who many consider the godfather of punk rock. McLaren died on Thursday in a Swiss hospital after a long battle with a rare form of cancer called mesothelioma, and even though they had a fraught professional relationship, former Sex Pistols frontman John Lydon (a.k.a. “Johnny Rotten”) had uncharacteristically kind words for his former boss. “For me Malc was always entertaining, and I hope you remember that,” Lydon said in a statement attributed to his stage name. “Above all else he was an entertainer and I will miss him, and so should you.” Also paying tribute was David Johansen, frontman of the New York Dolls, the gender-bending stateside punk progenitors that McLaren briefly managed before turning his attention to creating England’s Pistols. “Malcolm McLaren was such a marvelous amalgam of exuberation, sensuality, culture, and literacy salted with the essential recognition of his own rascality,” he told Entertainment Weekly . “He was the perfect preservation against stuffiness and a lack of humanity. We are going to miss him.” Annabella Lwin, who was discovered by McLaren at age 14 while working at a dry cleaner, said the flame-haired impresario changed her life by plucking her from obscurity, changing her name (from Myant Myant Aye) and hiring her as the frontwoman of the new-wave act Bow Wow Wow in 1980. On the day he rescued her from minimum-wage drudgery, Lwin said she thought McLaren was “a strange creature from another planet. He had a chat with my mother, and asked her — well, he didn’t ask. He said, ‘We need her for this band.’ And the rest of it was pretty much an everyday thing. “We got to work together on songs, and I was told to sing certain things, and he was the one that really gave me encouragement in that situation, as opposed to the band. He was the one that said, ‘Use your imagination,’ which is something that will never leave me,” she told EW . “Malcolm McLaren recognized something within me I didn’t even know I was capable of. I don’t think I would have been the singer that I am today if it hadn’t been for him, even long after I had an association with him on a professional level. I’m so grateful to have known somebody like him. … “Down the road, I discovered the other stuff he’d done, and I realized that he was like a big schoolboy, and he was having a bit of fun with these building blocks. And if it didn’t go his way, he’d knock ’em all down and start all over again with some other situation. It’s great to know that he did so much in his life. I mean, what an accomplishment! He started the punk rock movement, and there are a lot of groups out there that have him to thank for them being so big today in the industry. “A lot of people will definitely be feeling the loss of this genius. Because he was a genius. He saw such great potential in people. He just went all these different directions. You can’t really say any less than that: The guy was a genius.” McLaren’s former partner fashion designer Dame Vivienne Westwood described him as a “very charismatic, special and talented person.” The couple’s son, Joseph Corre, the founder of the Agent Provocateur line of lingerie, called his dad the “original punk rocker,” who “revolutionized the world,” according to BBC News . “He’s somebody I’m incredibly proud of. He’s a real beacon of a man for people to look up to,” Corre said.

Poreotix Say Winning ‘America’s Best Dance Crew’ Is ‘A Dream Come True’

The dance group credit their victory to ‘being true’ to themselves. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Tim Kash Poreotix and Tim Kash Photo: MTV News On Thursday night, “America’s Best Dance Crew” found its latest champs: Poreotix . And the California natives admit that they still can’t believe they managed to rise up the ranks and beat out the Blueprint Cru as season five’s winning team. When MTV News caught up with the crew, they said they were still reeling from the news. Describing the win as “a dream come true,” they explained they were not only excited by the win but also the fact that the show gave them the chance to “inspire the fans.” So, what made the Poreotix stand out? In their opinion, it was their ability to be themselves week after week that connected most to fans. “I think we did a lot of stuff the other crews wouldn’t have done,” Dumbo Nguyen explained. “We don’t move around the stage a lot, but we definitely entertain a lot of people.” Dumbo summed up their dance mantra this way: “We want to show people that we’re able to stand here and entertain you and don’t have to run around the stage and do crazy stuff. As long as you bring your true self out and people enjoy that, that’s all that matters.” The crew said their biggest challenge was during disco week. And the guys will be back for charity week, when they plan to bring their game again by “being true to ourselves again. Popping choreography robotics,” Dumbo said. And what will the guys spend their winnings on? Whatever’s left over after school tuition and rent, they’ll put into savings. It seems these guys aren’t just dance machines, they’re also practical. Are you happy with Poreotix’s win? Talk about your favorite “ABDC” moments in the comments below! Man Arrested For Attempting To Smuggle ‘Lady Gaga’ Heroin

27-year-old man allegedly arrived in Syracuse with bags of heroin stamped with the pop star’s name. By James Montgomery Lady Gaga Photo: Dimitrios Kambouris/ WireImage On Tuesday, members of the Syracuse Police Special Investigations Division received a tip that a large amount of heroin was being delivered on a bus from New York City. When that bus arrived at 5 p.m., police found more than 15 grams of heroin in the possession of a 27-year-old man, whom they took into custody. And here’s where Lady Gaga comes in to the story. According to Syracuse’s The Post-Standard , police discovered 400 glassine bags, each containing a tan powder that tested positive for heroin, hidden in the pants of a bus passenger named Jeffrey J. Williams. Each bag was stamped in red ink with the words “Lady Gaga.” All told, police discovered 15.6 grams of “Gaga” heroin — with an estimated street value of $6,000 — on Williams’ person. He was arrested and charged with two felony counts and a misdemeanor count of criminal possession of a controlled substance. At press time, MTV News’ phone calls to the Syracuse Police Department requesting comment had not been returned. While Gaga herself had nothing to do with the incident (or the heroin), she’s now joined a list of entertainers and celebrities who have unwittingly lent their names to street drugs. Earlier this year, Newark police uncovered 500 bricks of “Lil Wayne”-branded heroin — with a street value of some $250 million — hidden in the interior of an SUV. And in 2009, Border Patrol agents in Washington state arrested a man attempting to smuggle 67 pounds of Benzylpiperazine pills, a drug that causes a euphoria similar to that experienced with Ecstasy, into the U.S. Most of the pills were stamped with the likeness of Bart Simpson, but others were marked with a silhouette of President Barack Obama . Jay Electronica’s ‘Exhibit C’ Video Still Coming, Directors Promise

‘We’re moving on it, man,’ Coodie of Creative Control tells Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid and Steven Roberts, with additional reporting by Yemi Bamiro Jay Electronica Photo: MTV News The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive Jay Electronica is a hard man to pin down. The enigmatic MC has been in demand with media outlets and artists alike , whether it’s to pick his brain during interviews or for collaborations . Jay, however, has remained elusive. Earlier this year, when his song “Exhibit C” hit the Web, it shook the underground and even made its way onto popular radio stations like Hot 97 in New York. Various MCs freestyled over the beat and many fans anointed him the future of hip-hop, although some people had no idea what the New Orleans MC even looked like. The record has marinated for months, but there hasn’t been a video. A clip for “Exhibit A” was teased earlier this year but has yet to materialize. Well, there’s still hope for an “Exhibit C” video. No one is exactly sure when to expect it, but we had a nice talk with the cinematographers behind Erykah Badu’s controversial “Window Seat” video , Coodie and Chike of Creative Control , and they said the video is in the works. “We’re in discussion. We’ve been building on it, so hopefully soon,” Coodie said. “We’re moving on it, man. We’re in pre-production actually preparing to do it, so we’ll see.” “Yeah, but Jay is quite the magician, so he’s visible one minute and disappears the next,” Chike chimed in. Electronica admits that he takes his time with projects — especially his anticipated album. “For the past few years, I’ve been working at my own pace,” Jay said. “Not necessarily out of stubbornness; it’s just that I’ve been doing it for so long and trying to accomplish the thing for so long that I finally found being my own self and working in my own time and being the most natural is the things that yields the best results for me. “When questions like that come,” Electronica said about answering when his album will drop, “I would like to tell you, ‘Yo, it’s coming next week, two weeks from now.’ Because we have projects, me and Just Blaze, we got gangs of songs. I speak to Nas on a regular basis. We’re working on music together. There are a lot of things going on. But I don’t necessarily have a calendar mark of when a thing is coming, because I just kind of want to keep going the way it has been going, which has got me to this point. When I have been on a calendar, when I have been trying to do it that way, it hasn’t been successful for me. It hasn’t yielded any results.” A 36-second snippet of the video for Jay’s “Exhibit A” appeared on his YouTube page in January, but there’s been little news of what’s next. The video is directed by Jason Goldwatch and features Jay in Nepal among the people, meditating and talking to monks. While the directors were coy about what they had in mind for “Exhibit C,” Chike said they would pool together budgets and take a very creative approach. “Without giving it away, it’s definitely something that’s going to be very interesting, and it’s going to take a lot of artists,” Chike said. “Not just rappers, but a lot of artists as far as putting this together. Cats that are true with their craft. It’s going to be dope.” Other Heat This Week

Weezer, Kid Cudi, Lil Jon Work With Steve Aoki On New Album

‘It should be interesting,’ Aoki says of the eclectic collaborations. By Adam Murphy, with additional reporting by Akshay Bhansali Steve Aoki Photo: MTV News At this year’s Winter Music Conference in Miami, MTV News spoke to some of the biggest names in dance music and beyond. One name that we couldn’t escape was West coast electronic tycoon Steve Aoki. To assign any one title to Steve Aoki is to do his talents a disservice. DJ, producer and record-label owner (Dim Mak) are but a few of the hats which he somehow manages to wear all at once. And if you’ve heard him spin, Aoki doesn’t miss a beat. As mainstream artists are increasingly consulting underground icons of dance music for production advice, Aoki has a well-trodden path from the major labels to his doorstep, having remixed hit singles for Weezer, Kid Cudi, Robin Thicke, The Killers and beyond. On the international scene, however, Aoki is a completely different phenomenon. His track “I’m in the House,” which features Zuper Blahq (who is almost certainly the alter ego of Will.I.Am ) has been making waves in the clubs and on the indie and dance singles charts abroad since it dropped in November of last year. This reboot of the chant-along sensibility of classic house (also revamped by David Guetta in “On the Dancefloor”) may offer us a glimpse of Aoki’s forthcoming LP. “With my album I’m doing a couple of different tracks with some familiar voices,” Aoki said. “Zuper Blahq, Kid Cudi, Lil John, Weezer, Black Star, Uffie, Sky Ferreira … just mixing it up with some hip-hop vocals, rock vocals, house vocals. So yeah, it should be interesting.” Aoki’s eclectic sensibility and his D.I.Y. spirit perhaps stem from his roots in — of all things — hardcore punk bands. And as more and more “bedroom producers” ascend to international stardom, the independent spirit seems to be the look of the moment. “We’re all doing it ourselves,” Aoki offered. “We’re making enough of a riot in our own world that more people are getting interested and want to get involved in what we’re doing. And if it makes sense to do a collaboration with a familiar voice that everyone knows, then it can make sense on both sides. It can work on the underground and it can work in the commercial world.” When you’re not showing off your moves at the club, stick with MTV News for Dance Music Week. We’ll be catching up with your favorite dance-floor staples as well as introducing you to up-and-coming talent. Related Videos It’s Dance Music Week! Related Artists Weezer Kid Cudi Lil Jon

Suge Knight Lawsuit Against Kanye West Gets Court Date

Former Death Row honcho’s suit for 2005 Miami club shooting goes to court December 6. By Gil Kaufman Kanye West Photo: Eric Ryan/Getty Images Kanye West has kept a pretty low profile since infamously bum-rushing Taylor Swift at the VMAs , but the notoriously private rapper may have to come out of seclusion at year’s end, thanks to one-time rap impresario Marion “Suge” Knight . According to The Associated Press, , on Tuesday U.S. District Court Judge Patricia Seitz scheduled a December 6 trial date in Miami for a lawsuit by the one-time Death Row Records honcho against West. Knight claims the Grammy-winning rapper was partially responsible for a 2005 nightclub shooting at a party he hosted that resulted in Knight getting shot in the leg. Knight filed the suit against West in 2008, blaming ‘Ye for the loss of a beloved 15-carat diamond stud earring that he claims was stolen from him during the melee at the trendy Shore Club in 2005, where West was hosting a pre-party before that year’s MTV Video Music Awards. Knight was shot in the right leg at party in the still-unsolved crime, in which six shots were fired and few witnesses have come forward, despite a star-studded crowd that included Eddie Murphy, Jessica Alba and the Black Eyed Peas. According to the lawsuit, the label boss blames ‘Ye for allowing someone to smuggle a gun past security at the party, which his lawyers said was also supposed to be attended by people known to have beef with Knight. A bullet hit Knight in the right leg, shattering a bone and requiring surgery and months of physical therapy that cost more than $200,000; the suit seeks more than $1 million in damages. A spokesperson for West could not be reached for comment at press time, but in court papers the MC and the owners of the Shore Club have denied Knight’s claims of negligence. The lawsuit was originally brought in Los Angeles as part of Knight’s 2006 bankruptcy filing, but later moved to Miami at the request of the Shore Club’s owners. If Knight wins, he’ll have to share any damages with the bankruptcy trustee and the IRS. Related Artists Kanye West Marion “Suge” Knight

Cypress Hill’s ‘Armada Latina’ Video Kicks Off The Summer-Jam Sweepstakes

B-Real and Sen Dog are back, and they’re clearly ready to party. By James Montgomery B-Real in Cypress Hill’s video for “Armada Latina” Photo: Priority Here in the Northeast, it’s been unseasonably warm this week, so it’s probably not too soon to start considering songs for the annual Summer-Jam Sweepstakes, the competition to see which tune will dominate the beaches and lakefront properties of this great nation of ours when the mercury rises and the shirts come off. And for the first entry, I present to you Cypress Hill’s “Armada Latina,” whose video premiered Thursday (April 8) on MTV. It probably wasn’t supposed to work out this way. After all, timing has never exactly been B-Real and Sen Dog’s greatest strength. Rise Up, the album from which “Armada” comes, has been in the works since 2005, and something like four singles have already been released off it, even though it doesn’t hit stores until April 20 (how fitting). But for once, the guys may have gotten it right, as “Armada” is the perfect song — and video — for summer (or spring, for that matter). It’s a bouncing, downright breezy thing, riding on a sample of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young’s “Judy Blue Eyes” and popping with Latin percussion and finger-picked guitars. It’s kind of like Kid Rock’s “All Summer Long,” only with congas and Cohibas instead of walleyes and whiskey. Make no mistake about it, this isn’t the Cypress Hill you knew and loved in 1993. Well, it is — the 4/20 release date is a dead giveaway that these dudes are still into herbal remedies — but unlike the smoky, claustrophobic hits of their past (“Insane in the Brain” and, to a lesser extent, “(Rock) Superstar”), “Armada” is bright, jovial, even celebratory … the kind of thing you want to listen to with the windows rolled down. Miami’s Pitbull shows up to contribute a lilting verse. Marc Anthony sings the hook (though he’s not in the video). B and Sen rap about Cuba Libres and games of dominoes. The video is one giant summery, Little Havana block party. Everyone looks like they’re having a blast. No one blows plumes of smoke at the camera. This is not, shall we say, the red-eyed and hazy Cypress Hill of the Clinton era. Just having a Cypress Hill video to write about is enough to make my inner 15-year-old happy, but things have changed for B and Sen. At least judging by “Armada Latina,” they’re in it to win it. And they’re ready to party. Sometimes you’ve gotta step outside of the smoke-filled room and dance a little. The Summer-Jam Sweepstakes begins now. What do you think of “Armada Latina”? Is there another song you think will be the summer jam of 2010? Share your thoughts below. Related Artists Cypress Hill

3OH!3 Discuss ‘Leaked’ Track ‘House Party’

‘That’s a fun song,’ Nathaniel Motte says. By James Montgomery 3OH!3 Photo: MTV News Those 3OH!3 guys have never really been ones for subtlety. Last week, when MTV News visited them in the studio where they were putting the finishing touches on their Streets of Gold album, it seems they were planning to “accidentally” leak a sneak peek of the album a few days later — and they weren’t exactly trying to hide that fact. Oh, and the leak in question was a song called “House Party,” which is — you guessed it — about throwing a totally awesome house party. “There may or may not be a leaked song that we accidentally slip out there on the Internet, with maybe a video, and it might be something about a house party,” 3OH!3’s Nathaniel Motte smiled. “It’s gonna be called ‘House Party,’ and someone might steal it off my computer and put it online pretty soon.” “Yeah, It might be me,” Motte’s cohort Sean Foreman laughed. Lo and behold, a few days later, “House Party” appeared online . And, much like Motte and Foreman had promised, the song is basically one long ode to getting totally wasted within the confines of your own home (sample line: “I’m gonna have a house party in my house/ I’m gonna pour booze down my mouth”). What can we say — 3OH!3 are straightforward dudes. “That’s a fun song. We were talking about it the other day and we’re really excited because all the songs we’ve written thus far — and we’re getting close to the end — are things that we’re really excited about,” Motte said. “And they’re all things we hope to get out there, whether they’re on a CD or whether we release them in another way, we’re excited about all of them.” But while “House Party” can pretty much be taken at face value, it’s only representative of half of what the dynamic duo have done on Streets of Gold, due in June. By their own accounts, there’s an entirely different side to the band and their music, one that gets equal love on the album too. “I think we stretched. As much diversity as there was on the last album, we just pulled that and stretched it further,” Foreman said. “You get stuff on either end of the spectrum — like ‘House Party’ is crazy and has the craziest production, and it’s just a fun anthem that you’d want to sing with all your friends. And then there’s stuff on the other end of it, where it might be a little bit more singing and stuff like that.” “Slow jams for the ladies,” Motte added. “You always need a slow-dance song in the middle of the party,” Foreman laughed. “Make your way to the dance floor, player.” What do you think of 3OH!3’s “leaked” song, “House Party”? M.I.A. Calls Lady Gaga ‘A Good Mimic’

Singer/rapper says Gaga’s music isn’t weird enough in NME interview. By Jocelyn Vena M.I.A. Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ FilmMagic M.I.A. is known for her outspoken views, and in a new interview with British music magazine NME, the MC says she’s got a bone to pick with some of the latest pop culture trends, namely Lady Gaga and “Twilight.” M.I.A., who is releasing her follow-up to 2007’s Kala later this year, took issue with the fact that some people compare her eclectic style to Lady Gaga’s. In the interview, which appears in the print version of the magazine but has been transcribed by Oh Know They Didn’t , accused Gaga of being a “mimic” rather than making genuinely strange music. “[T]here’s Lady Gaga — people say we’re similar, that we both mix all these things in the pot and spit them out differently, but she spits it out exactly the same!” M.I.A. said. “None of her music’s reflective of how weird she wants to be or thinks she is. She models herself on Grace Jones and Madonna, but the music sounds like 20-year-old Ibiza music, you know? She’s not progressive, but she’s a good mimic. She sounds more like me than I f—ing do! “That’s a talent and she’s got a great team behind her, but she’s the industry last’s stab at making itself important, saying, ‘You need our money behind you, the endorsements, the stadiums,’ ” she said. “Respect to her, she’s keeping a hundred thousand people in work.” When asked about the state of record labels in the changing music industry these days, M.I.A. took another shot at Gaga. “Are [labels] even interested in making money from music anymore? Lady Gaga plugs 15 things in her new video. Dude, she even plugs a burger!” she said. “That’s probably how they’re making money right now — buying up the burger joint, putting the burger in a music video and making loads of burger money.” And though the British Sri Lankan artist has always been very concerned with the visual element of her work, she said “it’s not like ‘Haus of Gaga.’ Me blindfolded with naked men feeding me apples and sh–.” M.I.A. risked making other enemies in the pop-culture world by declaring that she had no interest in participating in a “Twilight” movie sountrack. “They asked me,” she revealed. “Luckily Jimmy [Iovine, chairman of Interscope] had beef with the ‘Twilight’ people. So he stepped in and told them to f— off.” What do you think of M.I.A.’s comments? Tell us in the comments! Related Photos The Evolution Of: Lady Gaga Related Artists M.I.A. Lady Gaga

Justin Bieber Tweets About People Magazine Cover

‘I look crazy as heck on the cover,’ Bieber said about his cover photo for People. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber Photo: MTV News is the cover boy on the new issue of People magazine. And it seems that the photo of him, depicting a very happy, wide-eyed, grinning Bieber, has left a little to be desired for the pop star. Bieber tweeted about the photo, noting that it’s not as flattering as he would like it to be. “Dear @peoplemag Covershoot…next time i laugh real crazy warn me u r still taking pics…still appreciate u but let’s get on the same page,” he wrote. But don’t think Bieber doesn’t appreciate the cover story. He also tweeted, “Exclusive story and pics in the new issue of @peoplemag. I look crazy as heck on the cover but if u cant laugh at yourself u aint havin fun.” As evidenced by his April Fools’ prank on Funny or Die last week, Bieber, who will also appear on “Saturday Night Live” this week as the musical guest and perhaps even in a comedy sketch or two, does have a pretty good sense of humor about himself. In the issue, which hits newsstands on Friday, Bieber talks about his meteoritic rise to fame. “What I have is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. And I’m having a blast,” Bieber said, adding, “I still feel regular. You know, sometimes it’s weird that I go places and I have thousands of people waiting for me, but I always think, ‘I’m Justin.’ ” Bieber admitted that although there are screaming girls everywhere he goes, dating isn’t his main priority. Why? Well, he’s kind of busy. “Right now, it’s difficult ’cause I’m traveling so much,” he added. What did you think of Bieber’s People cover? Tell us in the comments! Related Artists Justin Bieber
