Kellie Pickler, Sean Connery, Others Weigh In On Proper Kilt Etiquette

‘Just keep your legs together. Be a lady or a gentleman,’ Pickler advised at the Dressed to Kilt benefit in New York Monday. By Jocelyn Vena Kellie Pickler walks the “Dressed To Kilt” runway Photo: Andrew H. Walker/ Getty Images On Monday night in New York City, the number-one question being asked at the Dressed to Kilt event hosted by Sir Sean Connery was “Do you or don’t you wear anything under your kilt?” Celebrities including Joan Jett, Gerard Butler and Mike Myers walked the runway set up at the M2 Lounge to help benefit the Friends of Scotland Organization. And MTV News caught up with a number of the attendees on the red carpet to get their take on the au-naturel-under-the-kilt rule. Kellie Pickler, who modeled in the show last year, had this advice for the kilt wearers at this year’s show, whether or not they had anything on underneath their kilts: “Just keep your legs together,” she said. “Be a lady or a gentleman. No cartwheels down the runway.” U.S. Olympic speed skater Shani Davis wasn’t sure he was ready to bare all underneath his kilt. “Well, they say you have to go au naturel, but I’m going to be wearing something under there,” he revealed. “I don’t want to hurt the feelings of the crowd out here.” Model Marcus Schenkenberg, who is a vet of this runway as well as many others, was up in the air about where he stood on the no-underwear rule. “We haven’t decided yet. We’ll see once I get into my uniform, my kilt on,” he explained. “I’ll make that decision. This is my sixth time doing this show, [so] every time I’ve been in this show [I’ve had to wear a kilt]. I actually like to wear sarongs at home. It’s very liberating and free. I like wearing kilts and sarongs.” Al Roker was more adamant about the underwear rule. He definitely had plans to wear it. “I will be wearing a kilt. … No! I will not [be going au naturel]! I can tell you that! … And most people shouldn’t,” he joked. “I think Gerard Butler [should go commando]. I think Mike Myers [should], I think [“Real Housewives” star] Kelly Bensimon [should]. If it’s good for the guys, it’s good for the women. … [The weather tomorrow will be] fabulous! Unbelievable, you can go without underwear with your kilt.” Meanwhile, Nigel Barker of “America’s Next Top Model,” who was at the event to judge the celebs on their kilt-wearing abilities, couldn’t decide if he wanted to see anyone not wearing undergarments. “Go commando! That’s what they say! I like the myth,” he joked. “I’m not quite sure if it’s 100 percent true. We’ll see!” So, what advice does Scottish native and the night’s host Sean Connery — James Bond himself — have for those who rock kilts? “[Whether] you should wear it either on the top half or the bottom really depends on your disposition.” Related Artists Kellie Pickler

Coolio Issued A Bench Warrant After Missing Court Date

Rapper was arrested last year at the Los Angeles airport for crack cocaine possession. By Shawn Adler Coolio Photo: Phillip Massey/ Getty Images A bench warrant was issued Monday (April 5) for rapper Coolio’s arrest after he failed to show up to court for a legally mandated progress report, according to TMZ.com . The rapper (born Artis Leon Ivey Jr.) was arrested last year and pleaded guilty to possession of narcotics, specifically crack cocaine. He is currently on probation. Coolio’s lawyer tried but was unable to get in touch with the now-fugitive rapper, the Web site reported. Best known for his “Dangerous Minds”-inspired 1995 hit “Gangsta’s Paradise,” Coolio was arrested last March after a Los Angeles airport screener found crack in the rapper’s possession. The arrest was the nadir in a series of low points for Coolio, who just weeks previous to the incident was robbed of shoes and jewels while stage-diving during a performance at Staffordshire University in England. The singer, without a single chart hit in nearly 10 years, has more recently transitioned to acting, appearing on “Charmed” and “Futurama,” as well as a number of reality shows, including “Celebrity Fear Factor,” “Celebrity Bootcamp” and the recent online cooking show, “Cookin’ With Coolio.” The Compton, California-born 46-year-old also starred in the Oxygen network show “Coolio’s Rules” and Britain’s “Celebrity Big Brother.” A bench warrant allows for any individual to be immediately taken into custody and brought before a judge. Bench warrants are typically issued when offending parties do not show up for scheduled court appearances. Related Artists Coolio

Michael Jackson Doctor Conrad Murray Keeps His Medical License For Now

A motion to revoke his license was shelved until June 14. By Shawn Adler Defense attorney John Michael Flanagan and Dr. Conrad Murray on Monday Photo: David McNew/AFP/Getty Images While embattled physician Conrad Murray is still fighting his involuntary-manslaughter charge in the death of pop star Michael Jackson, for now, he gets to keep his medical license. A motion by the California State Attorney General’s Office on behalf of the State Medical Board to revoke Conrad’s license was put on hold Monday afternoon (April 5) by Los Angeles Judge Michael Pastor, who shelved the matter until a procedural hearing scheduled for June 14, according to The Associated Press. Pastor, who reportedly wrote a letter of recommendation for the judgeship candidacy of prosecutor David Walgreen, was assigned the high-profile case earlier Monday by Supervising Superior Court Judge Peter Espinoza. Many members of Jackson’s family were in attendance, including father Joe, mother Kathleen, sister Janet and brothers Randy and Jermaine. The hearing, which amounted to little more than legal housecleaning, stood in stark contrast to the somewhat circus atmosphere outside the courthouse. According to USA Today, large numbers of fans showed up, many holding signs and screaming, some even singing “We Are the World.” Murray, out on $75,000 bail, is charged with involuntary manslaughter in Jackson’s 2009 death of cardiac arrest. It is alleged that while serving as Jackson’s physician, Murray provided the singer with a lethal cocktail of sedatives, including dangerous amounts of the anesthetic propofol. Murray previously pleaded not guilty to all charges, which carry a penalty of up to four years in prison. Related Photos Michael Jackson: A Life In Photos Related Artists Michael Jackson

Deadmau5 Wants To ‘Keep Doing New And Cool Things’

‘I keep setting the bar for myself,’ the ‘Ghosts N Stuff’ dance hitmaker says. By Adam Stewart Deadmau5 Photo: MTV News You probably know his music from the promo for “America’s Best Dance Crew” and might even have fallen in love with the sinister sound — but who is behind the infectious beats and anthemic sounds? Meet Deadmau5. Pronounced “dead mouse” and known to his family and friends as Joel Zimmerman, the Canadian born, Grammy-nominated producer is one of the hottest dance acts around, and his headlining appearance at the Winter Music Conference’s Ultra Music Festival in front of 100,000 fans has only further solidified the fact that the Mau5 is here to stay. But who is the man behind the mask that has become so iconic in the dance-music community? “Long story short, a mouse went into my computer and died, and I found him in there when I was changing my video card,” he explained. After word spread on the Internet through various chat rooms and blogs, “everyone just statted calling me ‘that dead mouse guy’ because of he story, and it just stuck. And the 5 was because I couldn’t spell out D-E-A-D-M-O-U-S-E because it was too long to have as a name in the chat room, so I had to trim a character, so I was just like, whatever, and I put a 5 in there and it stuck.” A computer buff turned international dance-music superstar, Deadmau5 has had a rapid rise to success. Just four years ago at Winter Music Conference 2007 he was peddling his CDs and stickers on the street like scores of other DJ and producer hopefuls do each and every year. “It’s incredible to see someone catapult from obscurity to stardom in less than two years,” said David Waxman, longtime DJ and current Ultra Records executive. “He’s taking art to a new level. He’s not just a DJ remixing on the fly, but more of a musician and a producer — he makes it a lot more interesting.” Indeed, Deadmau5 has not only become an icon to the electronic music novice and fanatic alike, but he is also redefining what it means to produce dance music. And his shows have become legendary in the dance-music community, as he works with a lavish intricate array of mixers, MIDI devices and computer software — all while wearing his unmistakable evil “Mau5Head.” With the massive success of “Ghosts N Stuff” from the “ABDC” promo, Deadmau5 insists there’s more to him than that one track. “I’ve just got to keep doing new and cool things and being on par with that, because I really, really don’t want to be this ‘Ghosts N Stuff’ guy, you know what I mean? So I really got to, like, I keep setting the bar for myself and sort of, like, screwing myself because I’m like, ‘Oh man, I’ll never do that again, something on that level,’ and that’s kind of cool because it just pushes me to come up with something like that.” Coming off of a massive year with his smash release For Lack of a Better Name with singles like the aforementioned “Ghosts N Stuff” along with “Strobe” and killer Kaskade collaborations “I Remember” and “Move for Me,” ‘Mau5 has solidified himself as an electronic music star whose frenzied fans have put him on the top of his game, often imitating his signature mau5head. “Dude, I’ve been at some shows and some kids rock out these mau5heads that are better than mine!” he said. However, he’s planning to debut his brand-new, one-of-a-kind mau5head at the upcoming Coachella festival in Indio, California. “It’s just like an HD, LED matrix that’s insanely huge all in a big mau5head, so it’s, like, no longer a mau5head — it’s a compound spherical video surface. It’s the only one in the world!” With his new album on the horizon and set to be released before summer, Deadmau5 assures us he has some surprises in store. Unveiling Tommy Lee as his surprise drummer at Ultra Music Festival at the end of March, who will he pair up with next? “I’m working on my wish list right now and I don’t want to give it away, because I’m working with these artists and everyone knows who they are and everyone is going to go, ‘WHAT!?!?’ but it’ll sound good — don’t worry, it’s not Justin Bieber or anyone crazy!” ‘Mau5 joked. Are you excited to hear Deadmau5’s new album? Let us know in the comments below! When you’re not showing off your moves at the club, stick with MTV News for Dance Music Week. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Matt Elias 3OH!3 Photo: MTV News While 3OH!3 are busy working on their new album and gearing up for a tour with Cobra Starship this summer, they are also looking forward to possibly attending pal Katy Perry’s wedding to Russell Brand . It seems that she promised her “Starstrukk” collaborators they would receive an invite to the big day. “I haven’t been home yet, so it’s probably in the mailbox,” Sean Foreman joked. “We travel a lot.” But he does have a plan in place in case his invitation gets lost in the mail. “I’ll just show up,” he teased. “We’ll be fine.” Bandmate Nathaniel Motte added that the last time he saw Perry she made it pretty clear that she had every intention of saving a space for them at the wedding whenever it should happen to go down. “She said it was in the mail. You know the postal service these days!” he said. “Plus I saw her the other day and she was like, ‘I sent it.’ Her sister was there and she [winked] at her sister. Long story short … [we’ll be there].” Regardless of the whereabouts of their invitations, 3OH!3 insist that “bridezilla” Brand has their seal of approval. “We did meet him — super nice, really, really nice,” Foreman said. Plus, the guys admit that Brand does seem to have a pretty great sense of humor as evidenced by his next film, “Get Him To the Greek.” “His movie seems pretty funny,” Motte continued, adding that both halves of the couple are busy with the wedding and other projects. “She’s got a lot of stuff she’s working on.” Are you excited about Katy Perry and Russell Brand’s wedding? Erykah Badu Defends ‘Window Seat’ On ‘Wanda Sykes Show’

‘JFK is one of my heroes,’ says singer, who will be fined for nude shoot in Dallas. By Joel Hanek Erykah Badu in “Window Seat” Photo: Universal Motown Soon after learning that she will be charged with disorderly conduct for the nude shoot of her new music video, “Window Seat” — for which she faces a fine up to $500 — Erykah Badu appeared on the “The Wanda Sykes” show on Saturday. In her first interview about the video, the singer denied that she intended the clip to dishonor the late President John F. Kennedy. “My point was grossly misunderstood all over America,” she said of the video, which she made at Dealey Plaza, where JFK was assassinated in 1963. “JFK is one of my heroes, one of the nation’s heroes. … John F. Kennedy was a revolutionary; he was not afraid to butt heads with America, and I was not afraid to show America my butt-naked truth.” Erykah Badu’s ‘Window Seat’: Shot By Shot Sykes showed her own, less successful version of the video, “Middle Seat,” to an amused Badu, who also performed her single live (albeit fully clothed). MTV News recently spoke with Coodie and Chike of Creative Control, the directors of “Window Seat,” who said Badu fully understood the possible repercussions of not only filming without a proper permit, but also of the public nudity. “We had bail money and everything,” Coodie said. “I think she really wanted to get arrested and even make a bigger message.” According to the The Dallas Morning News, an official from the Dallas police department said the Grammy winner’s citation is a misdemeanor that’s the equivalent of a traffic ticket. Deputy Police Chief Mike Genovesi told the paper that a witness had come forward and claimed to have seen Badu strip on the street. “The witness had two small children with her and was offended,” he said. On her site , Badu recently released a second version of the video, titled “Window Seat (Reexamined),” shows the original footage in reverse. Her album, New Amerykah Part Two: Return of the Ankh, was released last week. Erykah Badu Charged For Nude ‘Window Seat’ Video

Singer has been cited for disorderly conduct after a video-shoot witness filed a complaint with Dallas police. By Josh Wigler Erykah Badu in her video for “Window Seat” Photo: Universal Motown R&B singer Erykah Badu is learning the hard way that the naked truth isn’t always such a good thing. Having made headlines throughout the past week for shooting a music video for “Window Seat” while completely in the buff, Badu has been charged with disorderly conduct after police officers in Dallas received a formal complaint over the nude shoot, TMZ reported Friday (April 2). According to the site, a Texas woman filed an indecency complaint with police officials after she and her mother witnessed Badu shooting the guerrilla-style video completely naked. Erykah Badu’s ‘Window Seat’: Shot By Shot Dallas Police Department Senior Corporal Janice Crowther spoke with MTV News earlier this week and revealed that Badu and her colleagues did not file an official permit requesting to shoot the “Window Seat” music video, which filmed near the same spot where President John F. Kennedy was shot and killed in Dealey Plaza in 1963. “They definitely did not get a permit,” Crowther said. “To shoot that video, they would have had to get a special-events permit from the events office, and it would have had to specify what type of filming they were doing, what subjects they would use and any traffic control they would need.” Indeed, directors Coodie and Chike of Creative Control revealed to MTV News that they did not seek out permits for the shoot and were well aware of potential attention from law-enforcement officials. Chike said Badu was fully prepared for the consequences. “We had bail money and everything,” Coodie said. “I think she really wanted to get arrested and even make a bigger message.” Do you think Badu should have been charged for her video shoot?
