T.I. Completes Prison Sentence But Still Has Curfew

Rapper will reportedly be placed under 23 days of supervised release. By James Montgomery T.I. (file) Photo: Gifted Talents/ RMG T.I. is officially a free man. Mostly. On Friday (March 26), the rapper completed his prison sentence , stemming from a 2007 arrest for attempting to illegally purchase firearms. Originally given 366 days in prison, T.I. was released to a halfway house in December and earlier this month, he was allowed to return home to finish the remainder of his sentence, which ended today, according to Federal Bureau of Prisons records. But T.I. isn’t exactly out of the woods just yet. While his home confinement may have ended, his lawyer reportedly told TMZ that T.I. will now be placed under 23 days of “supervised release,” meaning he’ll have to be home by 11 p.m. unless he’s performing, in which case, his curfew is extended until 1 a.m. The Web site also reported that the rapper still needs to complete some 400 hours of community service and will remain on probation for three years. Before his prison stint began, T.I. made an arrangement with prosecutors, in which he would complete 1,500 hours of community service, 1,000 of which needed to be completed before he would be formally sentenced. In exchange, he was given the 366-day jail sentence, which allowed him the opportunity for early release. T.I. officially began serving his time in May, meaning he ended up doing 10 months of the year-and-a-day bid. Since being moved to the halfway house in December, T.I. has been recording the follow-up to his 2008 album, Paper Trail, and earlier this month, he announced plans for a brand- new single, “I’m Back.” Do you think T.I. will regain the status he had before his prison sentence? What do you want to see him do next? Sound off below. Related Artists T.I.

Scarface Comes Out Of Retirement, Announces First Mixtape

‘I always wanted to drop a mixtape on my own,’ MC tells Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid Scarface Photo: Rap-A-Lot The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive First things first: A huge R.I.P. to Eric “Eazy-E” Wright who died 15 years ago Friday (March 26) at the age of 31. Eazy meant so much to the rap game — not just a godfather of gangsta rap, his business acumen was unparallelled and he helped revolutionize the independent record hustle. Your genius was amazing, O.G. With that said, it’s only right we keep it legendary for today’s piece — and we have a humdinger. Scarface hit us up with a trailer and not only is the Houston trailblazer coming out of his short rap retirement, but ‘Face is putting out his first ever street CD. “I’m a free agent,” he said. “I always wanted to drop a mixtape on my own. So I just said, ‘Let’s drop an independent mixtape.’ I feel that I should be as an adult and musician and pioneer — that’s what they call me. … I feel that I need to move on to another stage with the way I deliver my music to the public. I got a lot of sh– and I’m using about 3 percent of what I know about music. I’m not using it all. I’m music. I can play that sh– long enough for a real musician to catch it and feel me, where I’m going, and we make magic like that.” ‘Face strongly hinted that we’ll hear live instrumentation on his mixtape. “I’m f—ing music — I love music,” he said. “I eat, sleep and sh– music. I been around music all my life. I was born in a band. My uncles and cousin were in a band … my daddy was a DJ. That’s all I ever knew. My mom was in a band. She was a singer. That’s all I ever knew was being in a band. I’m comfortable being onstage in front of people, playing all the instruments.” Check for Scarface’s Dope Man Music this spring. Ryan Ross Says It’s ‘Us Versus The World’ With The Young Veins

‘If you like it, then you do,’ he says of new group’s debut album. By James Montgomery The Young Veins’ Jon Walker and Ryan Ross Photo: MTV News When MTV News last spoke to Ryan Ross , he was in the process of finding a label to release Take a Vacation, the debut disc from his new band the Young Veins. He was confident that the hunt for a label would be resolved in a matter of weeks and that, finally, the Veins would have something (a single, a video, a tour) to show for all their hard work. Unfortunately, things didn’t quite work out that way. When MTV News spoke to Ross and the Veins at South By Southwest, Vacation still hadn’t been released, and their tour was only a few dates old. Yet, to a man — and there are five of them in the band these days — their confidence hadn’t waned, and with good reason: After months of searching, they’d finally found a suitable home for their album, which will hit stores on June 8. “It’s coming out on a label called One Haven — it’s pretty new. There’s only, like, four artists on it now and Butch Walker is one of them,” Ross told MTV News. “To be honest, the search for a label was really weird, because some of the labels that you wouldn’t expect to care about stuff like radio formats were the ones that did care. They were like, ‘Yeah, we love this record, but what are we going to play on the radio?’ And I was like, ‘You don’t have bands on the radio.’ ” And the question of format — just where does the Young Veins’ crackling, retro-leaning rock fit in the context of today’s exceedingly grim radio landscape? — is perhaps the most daunting challenge they face on their road to success. As Ross himself puts it, “I don’t know if we fit in at all, actually. “I don’t think there are a lot of bands that sound the way we do, who play the same kind of rock we do,” he smiled. “But I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that at all.” And in statements like that you catch a glimpse of Ross’ swagger, the thing that polarizes most fans of his former band, Panic! at the Disco, and has earned him a certain, uh, reputation amongst those in the industry . It’s very much alive in the Young Veins’ music too. After all, Vacation gleefully — and some might say, stubbornly — flies in the face of most modern rock axioms. It clocks in at just a hair under 30 minutes. The songs pop and hiss and are totally free of today’s studio sheen. It was made on the fly, on the cheap and practically on the lam. It is very much a labor of love, made for (and by) a very select group of retro-rock fanatics. Ross said that was the most important aspect — he wanted to get his friends together in a house and just make a record they’d all love. He’s not worried what Panic! fans — or the record-buying public, for that matter — will think of the tunes. All of that will take care of itself. “The record’s out in early June, and after that, who knows? Some of the kids don’t seem to like it, and they don’t get it, and that’s fine, I understand,” he said. “There’s definitely a sense of ‘us versus the world’ with this band. We all sort of see it as we’re all in this together. And we’re all really happy about the music we’re doing, so it’s kind of worth it. I don’t like to say, ‘Hey, we’re really good. Check this out.’ If you like it, then you do. We’re definitely working way harder than we ever have.”

Whether you’re 80 or 5, you’re always gonna … I don’t know. There’s a difference between love and being in love, because you can love someone but not necessarily be in love. Diggy Simmons ‘Made You Look’ Freestyle Grabs Kanye West’s Attention

West posted Rev Run’s son’s video on his blog: ‘I knew this kid was [going] to be fresh.’ By Steven Roberts People may be familiar with Diggy Simmons as Reverend Run’s second-oldest son on the show “Run’s House.” But Diggy has been steadily building a name for himself as an MC — and somewhat of a young fashionista — thanks in large part to his blog and his mixtape, First Flight. And anyone who was still unfamiliar with Diggy took notice when he released a video of himself freestyling over Nas’ “Made You Look” throughout the streets of New York. “It was really something that I picked up and did on my own,” Simmons explained. “I was just writing for a while and doing my thing. It started off, I was just doing joints off my Macbook on GarageBand.” “I released my first track this summer and got a cool buzz around it. I released some tracks prior to the mixtape, and then that’s when I started pushing the tape and everything. And then once I pushed it out, a lot of people were aware that I was rapping. Now, since the ‘Made You Look’ freestyle and a lot of people knowing that I signed to Atlantic, many people know [about me].” Diggy said that freestyling over a beat from one of the greatest MCs of all time was intimidating, so he knew he had to do it justice. It took him almost a month of writing to tackle the record, until one day it finally came to him. “One day I just got in the studio and blasted it, and I just went off on it. I told at least three people before I was going to do it. They were like, ‘Yo, you got to do that beat justice. That’s a Nas beat.’ I thought doing a nice viral video, that would’ve helped it too.” He hooked up with Phil Da God, a young director from Atlanta whom he met on Twitter. Phil reached out to Diggy’s manager, and when it came time to shoot the video, Phil happened to be in New York. The video begins with Diggy bopping his head around 42nd Street with cars passing by, and then it transports you to other locations around the city like the Meatpacking District and the Brooklyn Bridge. So far the video has received nearly 200,000 views and positive reception. Kanye West even posted the video on his blog, saying, “I KNEW THIS KID WAS [GOING] TO BE FRESH. I KNEW IT!” Diggy said he was honored by the compliment from West. “Man, it feels good. He’s definitely one of the best. He’s like one of the craziest wordsmiths. His verses are amazing and I look up to him in hip-hop, so that co-sign, definitely once they said it in perspective, it was like, ‘Wow.’ ” Related Artists Kanye West Nas

Tech N9ne Says He Found Success On The Road

The independent rapper explains to Mixtape Daily how touring builds his fanbase. By Steven Roberts, with reporting by Shaheem Reid Tech N9ne Photo: MTV News Cornerstone Credentials Tech N9ne certainly isn’t a household name. He isn’t necessarily a big name in the realm of hip-hop either, but thanks to appearing at festivals like Rock the Bells and touring on his own, he’s been able to sell over a million records and build a solid, dedicated fanbase. As he prepares to drop his newest album, The Ollie Gates Mixed Plate, named after a restaurant in his hometown of Kansas City, Missouri, he told Mixtape Daily about the unconventional road he took to get here. “Being involved in all of those major labels in the past, nobody knew really how to do me, how to put me,” Tech said. “But who knows how to do me better than anybody: me.” He and his business partner, Travis O’Guin, formed their independent Strange Music label in 1999. Since then, they have enjoyed complete autonomy to do whatever they wanted with their music and their appearance. That’s also meant that he’s been able to go on tour to places where no one knew who he was. Tech said that they would play small-town shows with only 10 people in the audience, and he would still perform. When they came back the next time, there would be 30 people, and 200 people the following time. “If you want to be the hip-hop president, you’ve got to get out there and politic,” reasoned the rapper who won the Left Field Woodie Award from mtvU last year. Tech estimated that he does about 200 shows per year, a schedule that’s more typical of a rock band. All the money they make on tour is pumped back into Strange Music as they sign other artists to the label. They’ve also built a huge $1.2 million facility in Kansas City. He isn’t surprised that other artists have started to go independent and tour heavily to support themselves. In the digital world, artists have had to find new ways to sell their music to the people. Meanwhile, he said major labels are failing because they don’t take the time to build their artists’ fanbase. “We have that core fanbase that’s always going to be there, so whether we put out CDs, whether it’s going to be on iTunes or whatever, our fans are always going to be there,” Tech N9ne said. “A lot of these major cats don’t even have that. A lot of these major cats have sold over a million copies, but can’t get 1,000 people to come see them. … That ain’t for us, though.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines .

Keri Hilson Says Trips To Africa Are ‘Inspiring’ Her New Album

‘Everywhere I travel, I get music from that region of the world,’ she tells MTV News. By MTV News staff, with reporting by Audrey Kim Keri Hilson Photo: MTV News Keri Hilson received plenty of accolades during her transition from songwriter to performer, including a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist . Now, Hilson is in full-on artist mode as she works on the follow-up to her debut album, In a Perfect World … . According to Hilson, promoting her first album actually helped inspire her sophomore effort. “Everywhere I travel, I get music from that region of the world,” she told MTV News. “I’ve been to Nigeria, I’ve been to South Africa, three cites in Africa [in all]. I gather music from these regions, and African music is very drum-heavy. It was very inspiring. I’m definitely going to be using some of that inspiration.” Hilson was one of 2009’s breakout stars with her hits “Turning Me On” featuring Lil Wayne and “Knocks You Down” featuring Ne-Yo and Kanye West. She first made a name for herself behind the scenes by writing songs for Britney Spears, Ciara and Kelly Rowland, among others. Still, moving into the spotlight wasn’t easy. Hilson’s debut suffered a number of false starts, delays for which she told MTV News last year she was “grateful.” “It’s kind of been a little Detox -y,” Hilson laughed, comparing the wait for her debut to Dr. Dre’s years-in-the-making LP . “I’m just a perfectionist,” she said at the time. “I have had many [release dates], but it’s all for a good cause. The label wants to make sure the album has its proper release, and I’m thankful for that. Very grateful, even though fans look at it like it’s a bad thing.” For her sophomore effort, Hilson said she’s expecting Polow Da Don and Timbaland to produce the majority of her yet-untitled set. Hilson also said Kanye will likely be onboard for her next album as well. She said she hopes she can recruit Ryan Leslie into the fold too. Justin Bieber’s Manager Pleads Not Guilty In Mall Incident

‘Scooter always acts in the best interests of the safety of my fans and myself,’ Bieber says after Scott ‘Scooter’ Braun’s arrest. By Jocelyn Vena, with additional reporting by MTV News staff Justin Bieber Photo: James Devaney/ Getty Images Justin Bieber’s manager , Scott “Scooter” Braun, pleaded not guilty Wednesday (March 24) to charges of reckless endangerment and criminal nuisance, stemming from a scheduled Bieber mall appearance last November that turned into a stampede and injured five fans. Police allege that Braun failed to properly control the situation at Roosevelt Field Mall in Long Island, New York, when the crowd of 30,000 became unruly. At the time of the incident, police ordered Braun to send a message via Twitter to notify Bieber’s followers that the event was canceled. Braun, however, refused to send the message, police said. Authorities contend Braun eschewed safety in favor of publicity. As things got out of hand, police said, Bieber’s Twitter still read, “On my way to Roosevelt Field Mall in Long Island, NY to sign and meet fans! I’m pumped. See u there.” After news broke that Braun, 29, had turned himself in to authorities, Bieber defended his manager in a statement to PerezHilton.com . “The lawyers are saying I can’t say anything specific about what’s going on with my manager Scooter Braun,” Bieber said. “However, what I can say is that Scooter always acts in the best interests of the safety of my fans and myself. Also, I just wanted to let all my fans know that Scooter has the full support of my mother and me and we couldn’t be more grateful for all he’s done for us. Scooter — I miss you, man. Wish you were here.” TMZ posted footage of Bieber in Chicago on Wednesday afternoon sporting a “Free Scooter” T-shirt. Earlier Wednesday, Bieber tweeted his support for Braun, writing, “You’ve got my total support @scooterbraun. Wish you were here in Chicago with us #FreeScooter.” What do you think about Braun’s arrest? Let us know in the comments!
