One question posed asks the singer what it’s like to go from being a normal kid to being a pop-music sensation. “It was pretty crazy — waking up one day just regular, going to school and then next day going out performing for thousands of people,” he said. “It’s pretty crazy.” And how does he feel about his screaming fans? “You know, it’s really crazy to just have so many fans and have them support me,” he said. “I really like it.” Bieber also shared that he’s spied a cute girl or two in the masses. “I’ve seen [girls] in the crowd that have been pretty, for sure.” Speaking of fans, Bieber offered that he’s had a fan’s mom do something really crazy one time to meet him. “The craziest fan experience has probably been … well, actually I was in America and there was this one girl’s mom that got a tattoo of the radio DJ’s face so that [her daughter] can meet me,” he explained. Lil Wayne, T.I. Family Members Discuss Life With Jailed Rappers

‘No one wants to see anyone in jail, especially their kids’ father and husband,’ Lil Wayne’s ex Antonia Carter says. By Jayson Rodriguez Antonia Carter and Tameka Cottle Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images Lil Wayne began his one-year prison stint this month just as T.I. is preparing to complete his sentence . While fans of both have expressed how much they miss the superstar rappers , the circumstances have been especially trying for each artist’s family members. The mothers of their children, Tameka “Tiny” Cottle and Antonia “Toya” Carter, spoke to Honey magazine recently and revealed what it’s been like for them as T.I. transitions from a halfway house to freedom and Wayne serves out his term. “No one wants to see anyone in jail, especially their kids’ father and husband,” Lil Wayne’s ex-wife Toya said. “Wayne and I have a great relationship. That’s just not anywhere that I want to see him. He’s never not been accessible. As long as we’ve been talking or dating I’ve never not be able to pick up the phone and call him no matter what is going on in my life. Now he’s locked up and it’s not like that anymore.” Late last year, T.I. was transfered from a federal prison to a halfway house in Atlanta. He’s permitted to leave the premises to work, which includes recording in the studio ; he’s already released his comeback effort “I’m Back.” On Friday (March 26), T.I. is scheduled to be sent home. Earlier this month, Tip made his first public appearance since turning himself in when he attended a charity event hosted by his fianc

How Are Justin Bieber’s Basketball Skills? ESPN Columnist Weighs In

In a clip from ‘The Diary of Justin Bieber,’ airing Sunday at 7:30 p.m. on MTV, Bieber drains a half-court shot. By James Montgomery Justin Bieber in “The Diary of Justin Bieber” Photo: MTV News & Docs Is Justin Bieber actually a baby baller? In a recent clip from “The Diary of Justin Bieber” (airing Sunday at 7:30 p.m. on MTV), we saw him put on a dribbling display, drive the lane for two, and — perhaps most notably — drain a shot from half court. It was a performance so impressive that it led Newsroom blog editor Kyle Anderson to compare the Biebs’ skills to those of Steve Nash, Mookie Blaylock and Lil Romeo — a pretty impressive trio, if you ask us. But what does an actual expert think of Bieber’s basketball abilities? We decided to find out. And since no one at MTV News can even dribble with their left hand, we had to go elsewhere — all the way to the hallowed halls of ESPN, where we made contact with Page 2 columnist (and ESPN the Magazine contributor) Scoop Jackson, a man who knows more about hoops than we’ve forgotten in our collective lifetimes. We showed the clip to Jackson, and here’s what he had to say about Bieber’s skills. From the sound of things, he’s got a ways to go before turning pro. “I guess if he used the Internet and homemade videos to get discovered in music, why not do the same to get into the NBA, right? I mean, the guy that put him on/ discovered him, Usher, does have some connects with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Who knows? “Let’s see what the kid can do: By looking at this, you can tell that Justin at least went to basketball camp with this ‘two-hand dribble weave’ drill. This is one of those things that you learn at about 11 or 12 years old. It’s something you use to work on your coordination, nothing you ever use in a game situation. It also seems like he’s spent a lot of time watching And1 mixtapes. Let’s call it ‘Canadian Hot Sauce.’ “The half-court shot was legit. But you couldn’t see any wrist action, so it’s hard to tell if he has a good form or a legit jump shot. The wrist is always a dead giveaway. If he came down with a ‘goose neck’ on that half-court shot, I’d conclude that the kid could shoot. So, although impressive, it didn’t show enough to gauge how nice his game might be. “I’ll say this: Justin Bieber looks like he probably has a little game. But on both fronts — music and hoops — I don’t think Justin Timberlake has anything to worry about. At least, not yet.” What do you think of Bieber’s skills? Is he NBA-bound? Nicki Minaj Calls Lil Wayne’s Jail Time ‘An Emotional Roller Coaster’

‘We wouldn’t wish it on any crew in the game,’ she says at mtvU Spring Break. By Jayson Rodriguez Nicki Minaj Photo: Johnny Nunez/ Getty Images It’s been a trying time for the Young Money camp since Lil Wayne began his yearlong prison bid. The rapper’s sentencing and subsequent jail stint were delayed numerous times before he finally entered New York’s Rikers Island. Nicki Minaj called the experience “confusing.” “His actual time to go in had been changing, up and down,” she said during mtvU Spring Break. “So it’s been an emotional roller coaster for all of us involved because we never knew when the last text message or that last hug was the actual last text message or hug. It was very, very strange. We wouldn’t wish it on any crew in the game.” Lil Wayne took advantage of the additional time he was afforded to shoot more videos — he shot nearly 20 clips leading up to his imprisonment — and to make a guest appearance during Young Jeezy’s set on Jay-Z’s Blueprint 3 Tour stop in New York. While Wayne is away, his team has pledged to keep the YM torch scorching hot. Drake vowed to take the lead in Wayne’s absence. “I’m gonna do everything I told him I would do, what I said in the song [‘Over’]: keep us afloat till he gets back,” he told MTV News. “You won’t even notice he’s gone. Promise.” Minaj described the unusual circumstances that led to her, Drake and the rest of the Young Money crew appearing at mtvU Spring Break without Lil Wayne. Last year, Wayne was a part of the festivities, which also included performances by Jim Jones, Asher Roth and Kid Cudi. He brought Drake and Nicki along as guests during his set. Now, it’s their turn to apply the lessons Wayne taught them, Nicki said. “We remember last year being at MTV Spring Break, and Wayne was obviously the headliner,” she recalled. “He’s so much more than a headliner, he’s a person that I look at, and I can’t believe this guy is still going, after 20 to 30 minutes in the hot sun. To not have him here, it’s like a life lesson for all of us — always work as if we have no one else to depend on — and that’s what he teaches us. He did, like, 1,000 videos before he went in, knowing that he had to go to jail. A lot of us wouldn’t do that. A lot of us would be curled up on a ball like, ‘Oh my God, my life is about to be over.’ So shout-out to Lil Wayne. We’re honored that he chose each and every one of us, handpicked us. And we love him.” Young Money will appear on the “Sucker Free Countdown” Sunday at noon on MTV2 when Funkmaster Flex will interview the camp. Whose performance did you like best at Spring Break? Rihanna Takes Drum Lessons From Travis Barker Before Tour

‘She jams! Watch out for her,’ Barker tweets. By James Montgomery Rihanna and Travis Barker Photo: Travis Barker Rihanna ‘s European tour doesn’t kick off until next month (with a full U.S. jaunt scheduled for the summer), but from the looks of things it’s already shaping up to be a can’t-miss show. That’s because, in addition to the usual ephemera — Lights! Props! Costumes! — Rih Rih is also expanding her repertoire for the tour by learning how to play the drums. And she’s taking lessons from one of the best in the business: noted metronome/masher Travis Barker . Late Tuesday (March 23), Barker’s reps sent MTV News a photo of the dynamic duo after a recent practice at the Hollywood Center Studios and the Blink-182 smasher included a note that promised that not only will Rihanna be playing live onstage (no click track here), but that “she’s really good.” He later posted even more about the rehearsals on his Twitter account , writing, “She Jams! Watch out for her!” We’re inclined to believe him because at this point, Barker has collaborated with practically everyone under the sun, including his current gig with DJ A-Trak , which he unveiled earlier this month with a string of shows at the Roxy Theatre in Hollywood. Rihanna’s European tour gets underway April 16 in Antwerp, Belgium, and runs until early June. She’s also set to perform at the upcoming Kids’ Choice Awards, along with the likes of Justin Bieber. There are no firm dates for her U.S. tour, but it is reportedly set to kick off this summer. Justin Bieber Manager Arrested For Mall Incident

Police say Scooter Braun failed to tweet fans that an out-of-control November mall appearance was canceled. By Jayson Rodriguez Justin Bieber Photo: George Pimentel/ WireImage Justin Bieber’s manager turned himself in to authorities on Wednesday (March 24) to face charges of reckless endangerment and criminal nuisance, stemming from a scheduled Bieber mall appearance last November that turned into a stampede and injured one fan. Police allege that Scott “Scooter” Braun, 29, failed to properly control the situation at Roosevelt Field Mall in Long Island, New York. A spokesperson for the Nassau County District Attorney’s Office confirmed to MTV News that Braun was in custody. As of press time, Braun — who also manages rapper Asher Roth — was awaiting arraignment before a judge. He faces up to one year in prison if found guilty on both second-degree misdemeanor charges. According to NBC New York , police at the time of the incident ordered Braun to send a message to Bieber’s fans via Twitter to notify his followers that the event was canceled. Fans of the rising teen superstar were waiting for Bieber to arrive at the mall, where he was set to perform selections from his EP My World, which had just been released earlier in the week. Braun, however, refused to send the message, police said. Instead, authorities contend Braun eschewed safety in favor of publicity. As things got out of hand, police said, Bieber’s Twitter still read, “On my way to Roosevelt Field Mall in Long Island, NY to sign and meet fans! I’m pumped. See u there.” After a representative from the singer’s label was arrested, a message from Bieber’s Twitter was sent urging fans to go home. “The event at Roosevelt Mall is cancelled,” he tweeted. “Please go home. The police have already arrested one person from my camp. I don’t want anyone hurt.” The crowd waiting for Bieber turned rowdy when bystanders incorrectly insisted that the singer had arrived, which resulted in a stampede that sent one young female fan to the hospital. An attorney representing Braun dismissed the characterization of events. “Absent Scooter having a Superman’s cape, he couldn’t have [tweeted the cancelation] any faster,” Ravi Batra told NBC. “As a result of his lawful compliance with police instruction, [we believe the DA] will dismiss the charges after reopening the investigation.” Bieber tweeted his support of Braun, who helped develop the singer and introduced him to his mentor, Usher. “You’ve got my total support @scooterbraun,” Bieber tweeted on Wednesday. “Wish you were here in Chicago with us #FreeScooter.” Related Artists Justin Bieber

Justin Bieber Fans Plan What They’d Say To Him

At the teen’s My World 2.0 release party, fans share how they’d greet him in person. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber fans Photo: MTV News Nick Cannon was talking smack (and losing) to Justin Bieber at the mop-topped singer’s big bowling-themed album release party in New York City on Tuesday night. But Bieber’s fans had much kinder, gentler words ready for the moment that they might meet the 16-year-old pop star, whose new album My World 2.0 came out this week. “I’ll say, like, I love him and everything, and that I wish he could play at my birthday party,” Angelique told MTV News outside the Lucky Strike Lanes. ” ‘Cause he’s so cute and he sings really good.” Another fan, Brianna, added, “I would say that he’s an awesome singer and he’s a good artist.” And Nicole chimed in, “I would say, ‘I love you.’ ” Alyssa was more verbose about the dialogue she had planned if she came into contact with Bieber. “[I would say] ‘I love you so much, and I’m probably, like, one of your biggest fans — I know there’s a lot of other fans, but I love you so much,’ ” she shared. Ally considers Bieber’s music a gift, so in return she made him a present. “I made a bracelet for him, so hopefully I can give it to him,” she said. “I’m all on top of what he’s doing, every one of his shows. I try to support what he’s doing. If someone’s saying something bad about him on Facebook, I always try to support him.” While most fans had something they wanted to say to him, Christina had something she wanted to do. “I’m going for the kiss, though. I don’t care what he says, I’m going for the kiss,” she said. “If security tells me to get off, I don’t care. I’m going to kiss him.” Olivia, who had attended Bieber’s canceled Roosevelt Field Mall appearance last November, still knows what she would say to Bieber. “How much we love him and that we hope to see him again soon and we love when he comes to concerts in New York,” she said. “And that we also were at the mall too, the time he didn’t come, so we’re glad he’s back finally. … It was mad [that day]. It was crazy.” Anthony, one of the few guys in a sea of teenage girls, said that he was at the event for his sister, but he saw the appeal of Bieber. “I’m a proud fan too, by the way,” he said. “I’d be like, ‘Justin, you know, keep doing your thing. You’re doing good.’ ” What would you say to Justin Bieber if you met him? Let us know below. ‘When A Man Loves A Woman’: The Story Behind The Cover

On ‘American Idol,’ Michael Lynche put his spin on Percy Sledge’s #1 hit. By Eric Ditzian Michael Lynche performs on “American Idol” on Wednesday Photo: Ray Mickshaw / FOX In 1966, R&B singer Percy Sledge’s “When a Man Loves a Woman” rose to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Almost 25 years later, Michael Bolton covered the tune and brought it back to the top of the singles chart. And on Tuesday night, “American Idol” hopeful Michael Lynche hauled out the song for Billboard #1 hits theme week. The judges weren’t entirely impressed with Lynche’s soulful rendition — Kara DioGuardi called it “lounge-y and overindulgent” — but there’s no doubt people were talking about Big Mike and his performance after the show. “When a Man Loves a Woman,” reportedly inspired by a difficult breakup, became Sledge’s first hit when he recorded the song in 1966. The tune held the #1 Hot 100 spot for two weeks before ceding the ground to the Rolling Stone’s “Paint It Black” (which Siobhan Magnus covered on the show last week). Rolling Stone magazine would later dub it the 54th greatest song of all time. In November 1991, Bolton’s cover of “When a Man Loves a Woman” nabbed the top Billboard spot for a week, until P.M. Dawn’s “Set Adrift on Memory Bliss” replaced it. The song later won Bolton a Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Performance. Sledge’s and Bolton’s recordings are the two most well-known versions of the song, but it has been covered by many other artists, including Bette Midler, Jerry Lee Lewis and Art Garfunkel. In 1994, Andy Garcia and Meg Ryan starred in a feature film titled, “When a Man Loves a Woman,” which followed a wife’s struggle with alcoholism. The tune was also used in 1992’s “The Crying Game” and an episode of “The Wonder Years.” Which version of “When a Man Loves a Woman” is your favorite? Was it the right choice for Big Mike? Miley Cyrus Dishes Out Advice On ‘American Idol’

Disney superstar has kind words (and words of warning) for the top 11. By Katie Byrne Miley Cyrus on “American Idol” Tuesday Photo: Fox While previous “American Idol” mentors have included Barry Manilow, Randy Travis and Diana Ross, the show took things a bit younger this week with Miley Cyrus coaching the top 11 contestants. The theme of the week was #1 hits, and, as Ryan Seacrest pointed out at the top of the show, “This pop princess may only be 17, but she has a lifetime of experience.” When Seacrest caught up with Cyrus in the audience, she admitted that she was worried about critiquing the singers because, “I’m a fan of theirs.” But she didn’t hold back, offering just as much praise as constructive criticism. With Lee Dewyze, Miley took the season’s lone rocker to task for his lack of charisma onstage. “Lee, I think, has an amazing voice,” Cyrus said. “The only thing that is lacking sometimes is his stage presence.” She also called out his straightforward arrangement of the Box Tops’ “The Letter.” “Give them a few notes they wouldn’t expect from you,” she suggested. Cyrus had Paige Miles’ number from the start, warning: “I think as long as she watches her pitch, she’ll be great.” We all know how that turned out, but Miley also had some kind words for the smiley singer. “Your voice is just as powerful when you sing really soft as when you belt it out,” Cyrus said. Tim Urban’s Bieber hairstyle must have cast a spell on Miley, because she was putty in his hands. “I would give you two thumbs up,” she told him after a run-through of Queen’s “Crazy Little Thing Called Love.” “I think you rock.” She also answered the judges’ concerns about Urban being boring. “It’s not the personality he’s lacking,” she said. “It’s just adding riffs or switching it up somehow.” Aaron Kelly, who sang Miley’s “The Climb” during his audition, got a thumbs-up from the singer herself on his version. When he started singing Aerosmith’s “Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing,” Cyrus’ jaw dropped, which she later explained: “I made a face because I didn’t realize how good he was.” Miley immediately praised Crystal Bowersox’s “different” take on Janis Joplin’s “Me and Bobby McGee.” She did encourage the front-runner to take a few more risks at the end of the song. “There were some times when she hit those high notes that it sounded gospel,” Cyrus said. After Michael Lynche maintained eye contact with Miley the entire time he crooned “When a Man Loves a Woman,” the pop star “had nothing bad to say” about the big teddy bear. “He sang that song to me the entire way,” she marveled. “I couldn’t do that. It’s very nerve-racking to stare at someone and sing.” Andrew Garcia took some risky advice from Miley, agreeing to set his guitar aside so the performance wouldn’t be so “stiff.” “I feel like you could do it just singing and working the crowd. I think the chicks would dig it,” she laughed. After he flubbed the lyrics to Marvin Gaye’s “Heard It Through the Grapevine,” Cyrus had one last piece of advice: “Learn your words!” Miley met up with fellow 17-year-old Katie Stevens and urged her to “remember who you are as a musician and why you love music.” She also had three words for Katie as she tackled Fergie’s “Big Girls Don’t Cry” on the “Idol” stage: “Edge it up.” Cyrus was big on eye contact during her mentoring stint, and she repeated that advice to Casey James, relaying how important it is to her fans when she looks them in the eyes. “When I’m onstage, I always try to make eye contact with the people in the first few rows,” she said. “If he does that and brings personality to it, I think he’ll do great.” Didi Benami took advantage of her time with Cyrus by asking about stage fright. “Anyone that tells you that they’re not nervous at all, you’ve got to be a little nervous,” she said. “That’s what drives you.” But you just can’t let the nerves “take over,” Miley told Didi. As for the singing, Cyrus praised Benami’s vibrato. “I think this is a really good song for her, because she can really showcase that,” she said. Miley admitted right off the bat that she was a Siobhan Magnus fan. “Siobhan stuck out for me,” she said. “She’s just got something very interesting about her.” But Magnus was really excited by one of Miley’s compliments: “Your voice has such a swagger to it.” How do you think Miley did as a mentor?
