50 Cent Says His Black Magic Album Has ‘A Totally Different Vibe’

‘I won’t allow myself to be placed in a box,’ he says about ‘uptempo’ next project. By Shaheem Reid 50 Cent Photo: Stephen Lovekin/Getty Images 50 Cent is back in music mode. He’s been touring overseas with the G-Unit for about a month, and over the weekend, 50 revealed to a Norwegian news outlet that he had been back in the lab making songs for a new LP called Black Magic. Fif said he was inspired by listening to music in Bergen, Norway. “I went to a nightclub afterparty,” 50 told reporter Jonas Pettersen . “It’s a little different music going on before I got there. They play your music when you come. But the music they played before they started playing a lot of what I created was more uptempo, more dance. I wanted to make a song like that. So I went into the studio. Because I’m traveling with my live band, I took my band with me and sequenced it and recorded the actual record while I was out there. I did two other songs I had production for. I had been writing those songs for a while. So I finished them and recorded them while I was out.” Fif said his new album will not sound like his previous work. “New Black Magic project, I’m excited about it,” he said. “It has a totally different vibe. I won’t allow myself to be placed in a box when I can only do one style or one kind of music. They should expect the unexpected on this project. It’s good. If they can understand how I enjoy different genres of music and different styles; for the people who have various tastes in music, they’ll really like it.” While there isn’t a release date for Fif’s new work, G-Unit members Lloyd Banks and Tony Yayo say they’ll drop independently as early as June. “I’m aiming towards summer,” Banks recently told Mixtape Daily. “Mid-summer, late summer. I won’t drop an album until I feel the buzz — you know, as an artist, when you feel it. I’m working independent. Everything they’ve heard the past year has come out my basement, including ‘Beamer, Benz or Bentley.’ When you first come on as a new artist and you hot and you got a buzz, you could sell doo-doo on a stick. The label makes you feel like they did it, when they just called their boy and dropped the record off. “Now it boost my confidence when I know I can make a record in my crib, send it out and receive finances from it,” he added. “Whenever it’s through iTunes or whatever other outlet you have, I’m happy with it. I’m not gonna rush it, though. If it came out after this year, it wouldn’t matter to me, as long as it’s the product people expect.” “We gonna drop it independently,” Yayo told Mixtape Daily. “We not on Interscope anymore. I feel the stuff I went through on a major was nonsense. You make more money on an independent label.” Are you excited to hear new music from the G-Unit? Let us know below! Related Artists 50 Cent

MGMT Make Love To Lady Gaga On Congratulations

‘We don’t know if our new album is crap or not,’ Andrew Van Wyngarden says. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Rya Backer MGMT’s Andrew Van Wyngarden Photo: MTV News MGMT didn’t set out to make the stereotypical sophomore album, but, in a roundabout way, that’s exactly what their upcoming Congratulations (due April 13) is. An ambitious, swirling, downright paranoid thing, full of songs that try very hard to shed much of the fanbase they earned with the success of “Kids,” Congratulations is very much the end product of a young band facing the twin specters of fame and expectation, staring them down, then saying “F— it, let’s go surfing.” Which, of course, is exactly how the guys planned it. “I think the album in general is kind of, like, lyrically and musically, a reaction to fame and success. We said that it wasn’t going to be, but then we realized that was impossible, because we were just writing songs that were coming from whatever mindset we were in at the time,” MGMT’s Andrew Van Wyngarden told MTV News. “And the mindset we were in was post year-and-a-half of touring, chaos, like we had been in a tornado of chaos, so we didn’t really know what to do, so we wrote songs that ended up being about that. But they’re also about that pseudo-mystical … bullsh–.” Case in point — the title track, which Van Wyngarden describes as “kind of meandering upon the possibly negative effects of success,” or the very weird “Lady Dada’s Nightmare,” which is about, well … “It’s about having sex with Lady Gaga,” Van Wyngarden laughed. Congratulations is a very heady trip indeed, featuring 12-minute songs about surfing in Siberia, jittery odes to Brian Eno and the first single, a kitchen-sink affair called “Flash Delerium” (which sounds an awful lot like the Velvet Underground’s “Who Loves the Sun”). There’s a whole lot to digest, which is why the band (supposedly) decided to have fans hear it as an entire piece, rather than through a string of singles. Though these days they maintain that whole ideal was taken out of context. “We didn’t say that we weren’t releasing singles. What we said was that this album didn’t really have immediately accessible, catchy dance songs, like the first album had … I don’t even know why I said that,” Van Wyngarden sighs. “But we kind of felt like it’s something that’s best first listened to as a whole, though, as it turns out, we did release a single. You know, ‘Flash Delerium.’ ” And though it was probably difficult to pry one song out of Congratulations’ craw, “Delerium” works as the first single, most notably because it serves notice that MGMT have been through the ringer, and — like it or not — they’ve come out as a different kind of band — which, of course, is exactly how the guys planned it. “It’s kind of the most, um, everywhere-at-once song on the album; it’s like chaos. It’s supposed to be about kind of going nuts and feeling completely overwhelmed, and everything’s falling apart,” Van Wyngarden laughed. “And it’s funny to watch people’s reactions to it, because it’s kind of a love-it-or-hate it thing … we just kind of kept piecing it together, just wanted to make something that felt like you were going mad. And there’s nothing really pleasant about that. “We went through periods of paranoia, where there’s all these people around you telling you things, then you never really know if you’re doing something bad,” he continued. “I think that’s why a lot of artists make really crappy albums, because everybody’s telling them it’s so good … so we don’t know if our new album is crap or not.” Related Artists MGMT Lady Gaga

Jessica Simpson On John Mayer: ‘He’ll Never Have This Napalm Again’

Simpson addresses Mayer’s Playboy comments, Billy Corgan on ‘The View.’ By Jocelyn Vena Jessica Simpson on “The View” Photo: ABC It seems like all anyone wants to talk to Jessica Simpson about is her love life . Is she still angry that John Mayer dished about their sex in Playboy ? Is she dating Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan ? And while she is now able to laugh off Mayer’s comments about her, she neither confirmed nor denied that she’s romantically involved with Corgan when she stopped by “The View” on Monday (March 15). “Yes, my phone has been ringing. It’s more embarrassing ’cause I’ll walk into a restaurant or something and I’ll notice more men are looking at me,” she said of the response to Mayer’s comments, which included calling her “sexual napalm.” “And he’ll never have this napalm again. Well, [I don’t need to curse him out], that’s why I do shows like this!” She added that while they were dating, the only “stupid” comment he made to her was that they should break up. “He did apologize, but I mean, at this point it doesn’t really matter,” she said. “I mean, I only thought he was stupid for breaking up with me.” So with her romance with Mayer behind her, is she dating Corgan, who helped her on the track for her new VH1 show, “The Price of Beauty” ? “I can’t meet anybody! I’m marrying them the next week,” she said. “Billy is one of my dear friends and he did help arrange the song. He understands my heart and knew what I wanted to do.” Not only did she address her weight again , as well as her new TV show, she also looked to the future, which she hopes will include kids. “I can’t wait to have kids. Well, honestly, if I don’t have kids by the time I’m 40, my best friend [and hairstylist] Ken Paves and I are going to have children,” she said. “Oh no! I’m not pregnant!” Related Photos A Look Back: John Mayer And Jessica Simpson Related Artists Jessica Simpson John Mayer

Demi Lovato Admits To Dating Joe Jonas

‘He’s perfect,’ Lovato says of ‘Camp Rock’ co-star and tourmate. By Jocelyn Vena Joe Jonas and Demi Lovato Photo: Kevin Mazur/VF1/WireImage After months of speculation, Demi Lovato is admitting that she’s dating Joe Jonas, her old friend and onscreen love interest in two “Camp Rock” movies. In a new interview and on Twitter, the Disney star finally owned up to her relationship with the teen heartthrob. “He’s actually my best friend,” she said in a radio interview with Billy Bush , who then asked if they went from being a couple to being friends. “Um, no, kind of the opposite! “Yeah, he’s my best friend and he’s incredible,” the “Sonny With a Chance” actress continued. “He’s a complete gentleman; he takes me to the most amazing places. … He’s perfect! Lovato, who was recently seen with Jonas at the Vanity Fair Oscar party, said she’s digging the glasses Joe has been wearing lately. “I think it’s adorable and it totally suits him,” she said. In the past, Jonas has been linked to Taylor Swift and Camilla Belle, while Lovato was said to be dating Trace Cyrus, Miley’s brother. Jonas and Lovato recently recorded a song and music video together for the charity single, “Make a Wave,” a part of Disney’s 2010 Friends for Change: Project Green. “By the way… I would never lie to my fans,” Lovato tweeted on Saturday, seemingly referring to news of her relationship status. “I love you all … and I’ve never been happier.” Last summer, when MTV News caught up with Lovato , she said she tries not to be bothered by gossip about herself. “I try not to listen to rumors,” she said. “Rumors are stupid. They’re not true. I mean, of course you get stuff like that all the time. You read it online, and you’re just like, ‘Why did they even make that up?’ But, I mean, I don’t really remember them, ’cause they’re not important to me.” Related Artists Demi Lovato Jonas Brothers

The rapper said he wants to keep street rap in the spotlight. “I put that title on the mixtape because I wanted something to stand out,” Alley said. (Mission accomplished.) “Just to be different. The topics I went in on, it’s a lot of things people would call negative. My whole image, it seems it’s so negative. I went there with it. I feel that those words definitely represent my attitude. Kenna On The Inspiration Behind ‘Summit On The Summit: Kilimanjaro’

Documentary premieres Sunday night at 9 p.m. ET on MTV. By James Montgomery Kenna Photo: MTV In 2005, Kenna — who had long heard stories of the majesty and mystery of Mt. Kilimanjaro from his father — decided to climb the peak. He made it to Kosovo Camp, a clearing located some 16,000 feet above sea level (and still 3,000 feet from the summit), and then pushed onward toward the top of the mountain. He didn’t make it. Five years later, he decided to make the trek again, this time in the hope of calling attention to the global clean-water crisis. Both the trip and the cause were personal to Kenna, because when his father was a child in Ethiopia, he lost his brother and friends to water-borne diseases and, as he put it, “I could have been one of those kids.” So, in January, with a crew of nearly 300 backing him up — including fellow musicians Lupe Fiasco and Santigold, actors Jessica Biel , Emile Hirsch and Isabel Lucas, plus a team of scientists, United Nations ambassadors and skilled guides — he headed back up the mountain. (His friend Justin Timberlake intended to join the trek but couldn’t due to scheduling conflicts; Justin introduces the film .) And their trip is documented in “Summit on the Summit: Kilimanjaro,” a 90-minute film that premieres Sunday (March 14) at 9 p.m. ET on MTV. And apart from detailing the group’s massive of scaling Africa’s tallest mountain, the film also contains a symbolic message, one that applies not just to the trek, but to tackling seemingly insurmountable issues like global clean water: that together, we can accomplish great things. “When you go by yourself and you’re on a solo mission, it’s not necessarily something that registers at the end of the day. No one has your back. Getting to the top of Kilimanjaro this time had everything to do with the fact that I had an army with me,” Kenna told MTV News. “Some of us would literally look at each other and say, ‘If you weren’t here, I wouldn’t have made it.’ Our director, Mike Bonfiglio, was basically watching Isabel Lucas, and saw her dedication when she was really, really ill at the top of this mountain. And he, literally, was like ‘She made it, I’ve got to do this.’ ” Unlike his previous attempt, this time around, Kenna would not be denied in his quest to make it to the peak of Kilimanjaro. He had made his mind up, and he wouldn’t be denied: because he had friends with him, and because he knew there were millions of people depending on him to spread his message. “I think what happened is our medic told us, ‘You know what? It’s going to be something you can actually accomplish, even if you’re completely ill and sick and close to dying, it will be fine,’ ” he said. “She made it so we felt like we could deal with being uncomfortable, and at that moment, I was like ‘I don’t care. If anything goes on with me, at this point, I’ve come this far, I’m not going down.’ ” Tune in to “Summit on the Summit: Kilimanjaro” Sunday at 9 p.m. ET on MTV.
