Relive The Notorious B.I.G.’s MTV Interviews

Thirteen years after his death, we look back on his life as hip-hop’s brightest star. Notorious B.I.G. Photo: MTV News Tuesday (March 9) is a day not to mourn, but to celebrate the life and legacy of one of music’s most gifted artists: the Notorious B.I.G. His voice, his flow, his rhymes, his swag — whatever you wanted, B.I.G. had it to offer. He could tell stories, battle it out, ignite the party or kick game to the ladies. Christopher Wallace was made for rap. We didn’t get much time with Biggie. He put out his first album in 1994, and he died in early 1997 before the release of his second LP ( Life After Death ). Due to his work ethic, however, we have a catalog of timeless music that is often imitated, never duplicated. As mesmerizing as a Biggie song was, part of his allure as an artist was his charming personality. He’s a rare breed that could capture the wit and magnetism in his offstage persona and bring it to his music. Here, we are taking you back into our vaults to relive Biggie’s best MTV interviews. He was candid and thoughtful as he spoke about the inspiration for his music, his stage performance and much more. On Tuesday night, Diddy is going to celebrate the life of his friend and marquee artist at Brooklyn club the Lab. “We’re trying to make March 9th a national hip-hop holiday,” Diddy told MTV News last week. “It already is, on the low. MTV is going to have a big special. We’re doing a party. I’m going to Brooklyn. It’s gonna be the first time I’m throwing a party in Brooklyn. I’m from Harlem. Everybody in Harlem knows you don’t usually go over the bridge to Brooklyn. It’s a big, big deal. Me being such a Harlemite, I’m going over there to pay respect to my man. It’s gonna be a big party in Brooklyn with Mister Cee. It’s a big day. It’s a day to celebrate his life. It’s a day to celebrate the life of the man. We done did the movie, the records. It’s something that, I guess, as a label we’re obsessed with: making sure people don’t forget about this man in a positive way. March 9 is Biggie Day. … Bump Biggie all day, feel good and positive.” On Tuesday, MTV Jams will be playing videos by B.I.G. and a slew of other fallen musical soldiers, such as Michael Jackson, Tupac Shakur, Aaliyah, Big Pun, the Lost Boyz and their deceased member Freaky Tah and Camoflauge. This week’s “Sucker Free Sunday” on MTV2 is running a special tribute to Biggie, hosted by Diddy. Related Videos Notorious B.I.G.: In Memoriam Related Photos Remembering The Notorious B.I.G. Is President Obama channeling Ronald Reagan when it comes to the mass firing of educators in Rhode Island?

A Rhode Island school board’s decision to fire the entire faculty of a poorly performing school, and President Obama’s endorsement of the action, has stirred a storm of reaction nationwide, with teachers condemning it as an insult and conservatives hailing it as a watershed moment of school accountability. The decision by school authorities in Central Falls to fire the 93 teachers and staff members has assumed special significance because hundreds of other school districts across the nation could face similarly hard choices in coming weeks, as a $3.5 billion federal school turnaround program kicks into gear. I am extraordinarily angered by this decision, and stunned by the fact that Obama seems to endorse this scorched earth approach to solving such a complicated problem. These are underpaid teachers struggling to do a good job in a challenging environment, not petulant Teamsters demanding longer coffee breaks! And just who does the Rhode Island school board think they are going to find to replace these 93 fired teachers? What qualified educator in their right mind would interview for a job in a school that treats its teachers this way? The Washington Post shares my dismay. Now, all they have to do is find 93 excellent professionals to take their places. Recruiting the best educators should be easy, especially when you can offer them life in a very poor town and a job with no security. Just take a look at the statistics working against these potential replacement teachers. The statistics are dreadful, according to a CNN report, “Central Falls High School is one of the lowest-performing schools in Rhode Island.” The network adds that the school “operates in a community where the median income is $22,000, according to census statistics.” “Of the school’s 800 students, 65 percent are Latino and most of them consider English a second language. Half the student body is failing every subject, with 55 percent meeting requirements in reading and only 7 percent in math.” Can’t you just see teachers all over the country fine tuning their resumes for a chance to work at THIS school? These are teachers not fucking magicians! When teachers are facing these kinds of challenges you don’t deal with them punitively you offer them support, incentives, guidance. These are the same tactics used by Ronald Reagan back in 1981, to bust a strike by the air traffic controllers, the repercussions of which we are still feeling even today. The lessons learned from that debacle should inform President Obama that these decisions should not be taken lightly and that the fallout can last decades. I also find myself stunned that this president still uses the bullshit measurements provided by George Bush’s anti-educational No Child Left Behind Act to determine a school’s worth to its community. The NCLB act is one of those most punitive and unfair pieces of legislation to ever make its way through the Senate. It destroys children’s creativity and unfairly punishes schools in lower income or multi-lingual communities. Our President, who grew up in Hawaii of all places, should be hyper sensitive to that reality. But sadly he seems to be focusing on the numbers at the expense of the human cost of this decision. I expected more from this man who I worked so hard to help elect. Fortunately it appears that cooler heads may prevail . A Rhode Island school superintendent and union leaders, who have been at odds over a decision to fire every teacher at a struggling high school, signaled Wednesday that a compromise that would preserve jobs and overhaul the school may be possible. Gallo’s statement followed an overture Tuesday from the Central Falls Teachers’ Union, an affiliate of the American Federation of Teachers. The instructors have offered support for a longer school day, as well as more rigorous evaluations and training, among other steps. That appeared to pave the way for reopening negotiations on the proposed dismissals. Well that is comforting news, and I certainly hope that the real grownups involved in this situation will do the right thing for these children. And that is NOT to fire a whole school full of teachers! However I am worried that Obama’s rash decision to weigh in on this crisis has damaged his credibility with America’s educators. I was working at a school during the 2008 caucuses and election, and I can tell you these people were passionate about politics. I had a number of very animated exchanges with teachers supporting Hillary before the nomination process was complete, and then a few with McCain supporters before the general election. These were the people most likely to show up for a rally, or make phone calls to help their candidate, or donate their time fund raising. And they have long memories. From this time forward President Obama needs to make sure that any decision which has this response: conservatives (are) hailing it as a watershed moment of school accountability. Is a decision that he avoids like the plague. Republicans have been trying to destroy the public school system for decades. Remember, an undereducated populace is much more likely to vote for the GOP ticket. It is in the best interests of any Democratic President to do everything in their power to spoil the Republican plans to dumb down our future voters. And job one toward that goal, in my opinion, is to quickly do away with NCLB, and to start giving our nations teachers the tools and the incentives to help create the artists, and inventors, and scientists, and politicians, and dreamers of tomorrow.

Beastie Boys’ Adam Yauch Wants To Drop Hot Sauce This Fall

MCA is on the mend after cancer treatment, but the group may ‘reevaluate’ new album. By Gil Kaufman Beastie Boys’ Adam Yauch Photo: Mark Von Holden/ Getty Images After being diagnosed with cancer of the salivary gland last summer, the Beastie Boys’ Adam Yauch is on the mend and thinking about music again. The MC, who underwent surgery and treatment in the fall, told Entertainment Weekly that he’s ready to get back to work. “I feel better,” Yauch said on Friday at the Independent Spirit Awards in Los Angeles. “It was touch and go there for a while, but I am finally getting my energy back.” Yauch announced on July 20 that the discovery of the cancer would necessitate the canceling of all of the Beasties’ planned summer-festival appearances and push back their new album, Hot Sauce Committee, Part One, while he underwent treatment. According to a band spokesperson, because the cancer was discovered early and localized in an area that does not affect Yauch’s vocal cords, it is believed the surgery was successful. While a the album, originally due out last September, is not yet officially rescheduled, Yauch said he expects it to drop this September. “It was really disappointing to have to hold the record and postpone the tour, but doctor’s orders,” he told EW. “We may or may not [release the album], depending on how my health is come September. We want to but we have to play it by ear.” Either way, the B-Boys are planning on taking another listen to the tracks they had prepped to see if some tweaking is in order. “I was just talking to Adam [Horovitz] and Mike [D] today on the phone and we were talking about working on it a bit,” Yauch said. “We finished the record over a year ago, so we want to take a look at it and reevaluate and make sure it is what we want to put out there and that we are still happy with it. I don’t think we will change it up too much.” A spokesperson for the group could not be reached at press time to confirm a new release date. Related Artists Beastie Boys

Ryan O’Neal On Farrah Fawcett’s Oscar Omission: ‘Poor Farrah’

‘I’m as confused at everyone about it,’ O’Neal says. By MTV News staff Ryan O’Neal and Farrah Fawcett in 1987 Photo: Ron Galella/WireImage On Sunday night during the “In Memoriam” segment of the Oscars telecast, many viewers were shocked that Farrah Fawcett was excluded from the segment, which included Michael Jackson, Patrick Swayze, Brittany Murphy, Ron Silver and others. Fawcett’s longtime partner, Ryan O’Neal, said in a statement to People.com that “there is no comment other than we were disappointed that she was not included.” But a reporter for X17 caught up with O’Neal on Monday (March 8) and spoke briefly with him. “I’m as confused as everyone about it, you see?,” O’Neal said. “They have to explain it, I can’t. Poor Farrah, is all I can say.” Asked if he was planning to send a note to the Academy, O’Neal said, “We’re writing one, [daughter] Tatum and I, we’re writing a letter.” When asked if he could explain why Fawcett was excluded from the tribute, O’Neal replied sarcastically, “She wasn’t well known enough?” “[Tatum] was shocked too,” he continued. “Somebody called us first, we were watching the show [on DVR], so we were delayed. The phone rings and my friend says, ‘They left Farrah out of the tribute.’ Anyway, maybe next year they’ll slip her in. It’s a funny business.” While Fawcett is best remembered for her TV work, she appeared in several movies, including “Man of the House,” “The Cannonball Run,” “Extremities” and “The Apostle.” Speaking to The Associated Press, Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences spokeswoman Leslie Unger said omissions are inevitable when the segment can only honor so many people. “Every year, it’s an unfortunate reality that we can’t include everybody,” she said. Lil Wayne Going To Jail Is Like Elvis Being Drafted, Bun B Says

‘I don’t think anything like this has happened in music since Elvis got drafted into the Army,’ he says. By Shaheem Reid Bun B Photo: MTV News Bun B has been friends with Lil Wayne since he was a teenager. The Houston legend said having Wayne out of the music game for a year will be a greater loss than people are realizing. “I feel bad, because I don’t think anything like this has happened in music since Elvis got drafted into the Army,” Bun B said. ” … Let’s just keep it real: Lil’ Wayne is not just the biggest rapper, Lil Wayne is the biggest pop star right now. Maybe Susan Boyle is on his level. But when you talk about music, nine times out of 10, Lil Wayne’s name is gonna come into the conversation. I feel bad for any brother or any sister that’s gotta go to jail. I feel especially bad for a person like Lil Wayne who’s really riding the wave right now. But he don’t have a lot of time. He’s doing it on the Island . As wild and as ill as the Island is, I think at the same time, he’ll be all right. When you in that state jail and you dealing with those lifers, you got a lot of other issues at hand.” While in jail , Wayne should just focus on serving his time productively and not worry about fellow inmates, Bun said. , Wayne should just focus on serving his time productively and not worry about fellow inmates, Bun said. “I don’t think it will be smart for him to go to general population,” he said. “A person like Lil Wayne doesn’t have to prove anything to anybody in general population exposing themselves to that yard. It’s not about being real. It’s too many people who have way too much to gain, and [there is] so much he could lose by trying to prove something. … That’s nota good look. … It’s a little bit different when a person like Lil Wayne goes to jail. All we can do is pray for him. Pray for his spirit.” Bun, who championed his late musical brother Pimp C years ago when Pimp was in prison, said he admires the attitude Wayne’s musical family has in this tough time. “I just left Miami. People [were] trying to keep their heads up and sprits up while the young man was around, but they are hurting,” Bun said. “One thing I noticed from the Young Money camp is that they’re not being down because of their careers and they’re worried about a co-sign. They are worried about a friend. That’s what I see from Drake, Nicki, Stunna. … These people are concerned about a friend going to prison.” Related Videos Lil Wayne Goes To Jail: Celebs React Related Photos Lil Wayne’s Battle With His Gun Possession Case Related Artists Bun B Lil Wayne

D’Angelo Issues Statement On Arrest

Singer ‘has pled not guilty — and is contesting the allegations made against him,’ statement reads, regarding arrest for soliciting a prostitute. By MTV News staff D’Angelo Photo: MTV A rep for R&B singer D’Angelo (real name: Michael Archer), who was arrested and charged with soliciting a prostitute Saturday in New York, issued a statement about the incident Monday (March 8). “We know there is a lot of speculation in regard to the arrest of D’Angelo in New York City this past weekend,” the statement, from Lindsay Guion of D’Angelo Management, reads. “We would like his fans and the public at large to know that D’Angelo has pled not guilty — and is contesting the allegations made against him. Also know that he is in good health and extremely excited about his forthcoming new album. “D’Angelo would like to personally thank all of his fans for the outpouring of concern, and appreciates if all would allow the American justice system to resolve the matter before jumping to any conclusions,” the statement concludes. While a police spokesperson declined to provide further details on the incident when contacted by MTV News, according to The New York Post, the singer allegedly offered an undercover policewoman $40 for oral sex. D’Angelo was driving alone in his Range Rover at Greenwich and Horatio streets at about 2:30 a.m. when he saw a woman he believed to be a prostitute, unnamed sources told the Post. He was arrested and charged with solicitation after asking the woman for sex, according to the sources, who added that the singer had $12,000 in his car. Powered by his 1995 debut LP, Brown Sugar, D’Angelo was one of the leading lights of R&B during the 1990s, but he has released little music since his 2000 sophomore effort, Voodoo, and has been plagued by legal difficulties in the years since. T.I. Talks New Single, ‘I’m Back,’ Announces New Album

MC, finishing up prison sentence, also suggests that he might tour this summer. By Shaheem Reid T.I.’s “I’m Back” Photo: Atlantic/Trap Muzik On the day the hip-hop nation lost one of its beloved and prolific megastars, another one has returned. Just hours after Lil Wayne was sentenced to one year in prison on weapons charges, T.I. gave the world notice that he’s returning with a vengeance. The King of the South announced to a select group of DJs in a conference call that his new album is coming out on August 24 — and, as expected, he released his new single, “I’m Back.” “I ain’t never let you down, I’mma shine on sight,” Tip raps on the song. “Keep your mind on your grind and off of mines alright / Hard, I’mma ball on those squares, I flow/ A quarter million dollar cars everywhere I go … No matter what they doin’ they don’t do it like me … recognize I’m back.” Later in the first verse, Tip lays the fiery brash delivery he’s beloved for. “You ain’t got a pimp bone in your body,” Tip chastises, throwing thunder at fraudulent MCs. “I can tell you ain’t never bought a key or caught a body/ N—a probably just seen Wayne, Gucci Mane, me and Boosie all go to prison/ Now he flip his whole image/ N—a trippin’/ Listen dude, for you that ain’t in the cards.” The song was produced new Grand Hustle producers the Trackslayerz, and is available for download at T.I.’s Web site . An hour before the song hit the Internet, Tip held the conference call, for which he did not take questions but reflected on the song and announced his album’s release date, according to audio of the call posted on DJ Judgemental’s Web site . There is a title for the LP, but he declined to reveal it. “I appreciate the support and how hard I was going in during the brief hiatus,” Tip said. “The support don’t go unnoticed and I don’t take it lightly. This marks a special day for us, because we putting out the first song off the album — not an official first single, just something to keeps the streets warm. It’s properly entitled ‘I’m Back.’ It’s a lot of things that needed to be spoken on. In my absence, it was a lot of things that went down, a lot of matters that needed to be addressed. This was the greatest platform for me to do it. It was the first song I did when I came home. You get me fresh out the box going in. I’m sure you guys will enjoy it.” Tip spoke for a little over three minutes. He said that he should traveling from city to this summer. “It ain’t gonna be long before all this is behind me,” he promised, referring to his prison sentence on weapons charges , which is expected to end within the next few weeks ; he was released to a halfway house in December and last month made his first public appearance since heading to prison. “Middle of April, beginning of May. Y’all gonna stay start seeing me. Y’all already know, once again it’s on. Like we always do this time.” The call ended with a final pledge of excellence from Tip. “As long as there is air in my esophagus, champ, I’mma keep going,” he said. “Nothing is gonna stop that. Nothing short of a 12 gauge is gonna stop me from doing what I do, champ. I just wanna say thank y’all and we gonna keep movin’ on.” Related Artists T.I.

Lil Wayne’s Jail Time Is An ‘Eye-Opener,’ Young Jeezy Says

‘It’s evident that nobody’s safe,’ Lloyd Banks says about rappers not being above the law. By Shaheem Reid Lil Wayne at court Monday Photo: Ray Tamarra/ Getty Images Now that Lil Wayne has been sentenced to one year in prison following several delays, the reality is setting in for his fans and friends. No one in the hip-hop community wants to see Weezy leave, and rappers also realize they need to run tighter ships in Wayne’s absence. Young Jeezy said he’ll not only miss Wayne’s work ethic and music, but also his friend’s rebellious attitude. “Wayne, like I like to call myself, is a trap-aholic,” Young Jeezy told MTV News last week in New York, hours before he brought Weezy onstage at Madison Square Garden as a surprise guest during Jay-Z’s Blueprint 3 Tour. That performance — which also included Nicki Minaj and Drake — would be Wayne’s last before he went to jail. “He stays in the studio, he stays working,” the Snowman added. “We’ll definitely miss that. At the same time, we’ll definitely miss what he brings to the game as far as him just being Wayne and doing what the f— he wanna do. We definitely gonna miss that. But it’s just an eye-opener to all of us. Instead of targeting the hustlers and the people trying to make it in the streets, now that the streets is dried up, now [the police] are targeting the entertainers and the athletes, what have you. Real talk, not trying to preach to the choir, we gotta be careful out here. What I mean to my culture is more than me proving a point.” Diddy echoed Jeezy’s sentiment that police are keeping a very close eye on the hip-hop community. “I think we gonna miss a certain energy that Wayne has,” Diddy said. “The beauty about it is, he’ll be back, and hopefully he’ll come back a better person. Whenever we get in trouble, we’re in the public spotlight. So hopefully there’s a lot of kids out there who could learn from any mistakes that we may have put ourselves in, even if we’re not guilty of the crime sometimes. We are human. People have to learn: ‘Make sure you know where you’re going, who you riding with, what the situation is.’ We’re targets. I’m just happy he doesn’t have to do a lot of time and that he’ll be out, and hopefully he’ll use the time wisely and use it in a positive way.” “It’s evident that nobody’s safe. That’s reality,” Lloyd Banks added about rappers not being above the law, with Lil Wayne going to jail on the heels of T.I. and Gucci Mane. Banks himself has an assault case pending in Canada. “People make mistakes, have poor judgments sometimes, and things happen. Hopefully, all those artists can bounce back from it stronger and use that time [in jail] to be more creative. Come back home and get right back to where they was at. It’s something that’s always been around. We been talking about [rappers going to jail] since Tupac.” Related Videos Wayne Goes To Jail: Celebs React Related Photos Lil Wayne’s Battle With His Gun Possession Case Related Artists Young Jeezy Lil Wayne

Lil Wayne Will Be Missed By Diddy, LeBron James

‘We’ll be waiting for him when he gets back,’ James says. By Shaheem Reid Lebron James Photo: MTV News Now that Lil Wayne has been sentenced to one year in prison , hip-hop’s biggest rock star has left a huge void for his fans, friends and family to fill. Weezy has lined up a bunch of music and videos to tide everyone over in his absence, but it wont be the same as having the man himself out and about to create something fresh on the drop of dime during a live performance or appearance. “I think we gonna miss a certain energy that Wayne has,” Diddy said recently . “The beauty about it is, he’ll be back and hopefully he’ll come back a better person. Whenever we get in trouble, we’re in the public spotlight. So hopefully there’s a lot of kids out there who could learn from any mistakes that we may have put ourselves in, even if we’re not guilty of the crime sometimes. We are human. I’m just happy he doesn’t have to do a lot of time and that he’ll be out, and hopefully he’ll use the time wisely and use it in a positive way.” But Wayne’s appeal translates to all forms of entertainment, including the world of sports. One of the NBA’s most renowned athletes, LeBron James, says he cannot wait for Weezy to make his return. “[The game] is definitely gonna miss him,” James said. Wayne appeared on the soundtrack to James’ “More Than a Game” documentary last year, contributing to the song “Forever.” “I think we all love his inspiration behind his music, how much time he puts into his music. The game will miss him, but we’ll be waiting for him when he gets back.” Related Videos Lil Wayne’s ‘Road To Rikers’ Lil Wayne Goes To Jail Related Photos Lil Wayne Heads To Rikers Island Related Artists Lil Wayne Diddy
