Tara Reid No Longer Able To Introduce Jeff Bridges At The Academy Awards

The greatest thing about the Academy Awards is seeing just what gimmick they will come up with every year in an attempt to boost ratings. This year of course was the selection of the very young, very talented and very easy on the eyes James Franco and Anne Hathaway to host, but it looks like something has been dropped in the process. Yes, everyone, the Oscars are no longer continuing the two year tradition of five presenters, generally former costars, presenting the “Best Actor” and “Actress” nominees (complete with 20 minute masturbatory speeches). Sigh.

‘The Roommate’ Tops Weekend Box Office

James Cameron-produced ‘Sanctum’ came in a distant second place. By Aly Semigran Minka Kelly in “The Roommate” Photo: Sony Super Bowl weekend tends to leave an entire demographic on the sidelines: young women. But it seems women found a way to pass the time amidst the gridiron hoopla. They went to the movies. The trend isn’t anything new, as last year, women helped make the weepy “Dear John” the #1 movie at the box office over Super Bowl weekend. Women under the age of 21 had a big part in making the Leighton Meester/ Minka Kelly college chiller “The Roommate” #1 at a quiet weekend box office with $15.6 million. Sony’s stalker thriller (60 percent of whose ticket buyers were female) jumped to an early lead when it brought in $6.4 million on Friday alone . While Kelly and Meester made for a killer combo, it looks like the seemingly unstoppable pairing of James Cameron and dazzling special effects has started to flounder. Universals’ Cameron-produced “Sanctum” found itself in second place with $9.2 million, even with 3-D ticket prices. The trapped-in-a-cave action vehicle received a paltry C+ from CinemaScore. “The Roommate” likely snagged a good portion of the “No Strings Attached” audience, but the Natalie Portman/ Ashton Kutcher rom-com still passed the $50 million mark during its third week in theaters. Coming in at third place, the R-rated feature made $8.4 million, bring its cumulative total to $51.8 million. With just three weeks until the Oscars, audiences are making sure to see Best Picture front-runner “The King’s Speech” before the big night. “Speech,” which only fell 25 percent from last weekend’s box-office figures, narrowly missed third place as it grossed $8.3 million. The film should pass the $100 million mark by the Academy Awards as it continues to expand in theaters. “The King’s Speech” has made $84.1 million thus far in its theatrical run. Rounding out the top five is Seth Rogen’s comic book caper “The Green Hornet,” which earned $6.1 million in its fourth week, bringing its overall total to $87.2 million. The Box-Office Top Five #1 “The Roommate” ($15.6 million) #2 “Sanctum” ($9.2 million) #3 “No Strings Attached” ($8.4 million) #4 “The King’s Speech” ($8.3 million) #5 “The Green Hornet” ($6.1 million) Upcoming Releases A veritable mixed bag of movies hits theaters on Valentine’s Day weekend, including Justin Bieber’s 3-D documentary “Never Say Never,” the Adam Sandler/ Jennifer Aniston comedy “Just Go With It,” Channing Tatum’s historical action vehicle “The Eagle” and the 3-D animated feature “Gnomeo and Juliet.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Roommate” and “Sanctum.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

‘The Roommate’ Moves Into First Place At Friday Box Office

College-stalker creep-fest snatches up $6.4 million. By Mawuse Ziegbe Minka Kelly in “The Roommate” Photo: Sony Leighton Meester’s dorm-based thriller “The Roommate” received a warm welcome from moviegoers during its debut Friday. The “Gossip Girl” star’s turn as an accommodating turned obsessed roomie who goes all crazy-pants on Minka Kelly’s unsuspecting character raked in $6.4 million when it arrived in theaters. Perhaps part of the film’s draw is the fight scenes — fist-flinging showdowns which Kelly said the actresses worked hard to imbue with a sense of it’s-going-down authenticity. “We worked really hard to make sure it looked like a real girl fight,” she explained. “I Googled ‘girl fights’ on YouTube, and we made sure it was messy and hair was everywhere.” Kelly added that the starlets didn’t bother faking the combat, leaving their Hollywood images behind and lobbing actual punches. “We fought to kill, because unfortunately, when girls fight, they fight to kill, and that was very true and real in our fight. We did our own stunts. We were pretty banged up by the end of it,” she admitted. The James Cameron-produced adventure “Sanctum” debuted in the second place. The flick, which treads familiar Cameron man-against-the-elements territory as it follows a team of explorers who get caught in a labyrinthine underground cave system following a dramatic storm, scored $3.5 million. “No Strings Attached slipped to third place. The casual-sex rom-com, which features Ashton Kutcher and Natalie Portman, scored $2.9 million on Friday. The haul kicks the film’s box-office bank to about $46.3 million. Still riding the boost from its boatloads of Oscar love, “The King’s Speech,” kicked off the weekend in fourth place. The film made $2.3 million, a figure that pumps the project’s total estimated tally to $78 million. Screen legend Anthony Hopkins’ latest flesh-crawling flick, “The Rite,” spent Friday in fifth place, with $1.9 million. The movie’s total estimated gross now stands at around $20 million. ‘The Rite’ Captures Friday Box Office

Thriller makes $5.3 million. By Mawuse Ziegbe Anthony Hopkins and Marta Gastini in “The Rite” Photo: Warner Bros. It appears that audiences are still down to get freaked out by a creepy performance from Anthony Hopkins. The Oscar-winning actor’s latest skin-crawling, onscreen turn, “The Rite,” topped the Friday box office. The film, which is based on real-life events and stars Hopkins as an unconventional exorcist, debuted with $5.3 million. When MTV News sat down with Sir Hopkins recently, the veteran star admitted he has a gift for freaking out fans. “I know how to do those parts,” he said. “Not because I’m scary, but because I know how to scare people. … It’s a question of being quiet and not overplaying it,” he explained. “You let the script and the audiences do the work for you. You don’t have to play evil.” Behind “The Rite” is last week’s box-office winner, “No Strings Attached. Ashton Kutcher and Natalie Portman’s portrayal of “sex friends” who shrug off the possibility of a relationship in favor of casual lovin,’ scored $4.3 million. Friday’s earnings kick the film’s total haul to just over $30 million. Jason Statham’s latest firepower-heavy flick ,”The Mechanic,” came in third place. The tale of an assassin looking to avenge the killing of his mentor with the help of his son (Ben Foster), debuted with $3.6 million. “The Green Hornet” took the fourth-place spot at the Friday box office. Moviegoers coughed up $2.9 million to catch Seth Rogen as the classic masked superhero duke it out with Los Angeles-area baddies. The figure kicks the film’s total estimated tally to $70 million. “The King’s Speech,” the dramatization of the UK’s King George VI’s struggle to overcome his stammer with the help of an eccentric speech therapist, rounded out the top five. The film, which recently picked up 12 Academy Award nominations, scored $2.8 million. The movie’s total estimated haul now stands at around $63 million. Ryan Seacrest, Josh Duhamel In Talks For ‘New Year’s Eve’ Movie

Ice Cube has also been named as possible addition to all-star cast for Garry Marshall flick. By Jocelyn Vena Ryan Seacrest Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Who would have thought that Halle Berry, Jessica Biel, Jon Bon Jovi, Abigail Breslin, Robert De Niro, Zac Efron, Ashton Kutcher, Seth Meyers, Lea Michele, Sarah Jessica Parker, Michelle Pfeiffer, Til Schweiger, Sienna Miller, Hilary Swank and Sofia Vergara wouldn’t be enough Hollywood star power for one movie? Well, it seems that the brains behind the forthcoming movie “New Year’s Eve” are looking to add even more high-profile talent to the lineup. “American Idol” host Ryan Seacrest, Ice Cube and Josh Duhamel all are in talks to appear in the star-studded flick, which follows New Yorkers over the course of, you guessed it, New Year’s Eve, according to The Hollywood Reporter . Seacrest would play himself in the movie, Duhamel would play a man looking to get to New York to reconnect with a mystery woman he met the year before, and Cube would play an NYPD cop who works with Swank, who will play the director of the Times Square New Year’s Eve party. The flick is set to begin filming next month. Earlier this week, “SNL” funnyman Seth Meyers and rocker Jon Bon Jovi signed on for roles in the Garry Marshall film, the sequel to 2010’s “Valentine’s Day.” And at the Golden Globe Awards earlier this month, Efron confirmed his role in the movie to MTV News. “I’m starting a movie in a couple of weeks called ‘New Year’s Eve,’ with Garry Marshall. It’s got a great cast,” he shared. “My scenes are with Michelle Pfeiffer. Yeah, not a bad co-star.” Last year, Marshall spoke to MTV News about the film, which was then in its early stages, and had one other megastar in mind for the film. “Already they’re mentioning Justin Bieber ,” he said. “Perhaps I’d better see who he is, so when he arrives on set, possibly [we can talk]. So we’ll see.” Check out everything we’ve got on “New Year’s Eve.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com .

Jake Johnson Raves About ‘No Strings Attached’ Director Ivan Reitman

‘I couldn’t debate him on stuff,’ actor says of legendary director/producer. By Kara Warner Jake Johnson Photo: MTV News For rising comedic star Jake Johnson, who appears alongside Ashton Kutcher and Natalie Portman in the new romantic comedy “No Strings Attached,” his personal highlight from working on the film (in addition to having the best lines in the trailer and many of the killer one-liners in the film as well) was working with legendary director/producer Ivan Reitman. “For me, working with Ivan Reitman was crazy because of ‘Ghostbusters,’ ” Johnson recently told MTV News of the man responsible for helping bring comedic classics like “Animal House,” “Ghostbusters” and “Meatballs” to the screen. “We did a whole scene where, this was one of the coolest moments of the movie for me, the scene where we’re in a fraternity house, partying and, you know, Ivan produced ‘Animal House,’ ” Johnson added. “And we’re all hanging out, setting up, and he goes to somebody he was standing next to, we were standing in a little circle, and he goes, ‘Man, I’m having flashbacks of “Animal House” in here.’ And he looked around and goes, ‘This is exactly how it felt, but in a different era.’ And I thought, ‘That’s awesome!’ Like, this is actually that man. [He] was there and [John] Belushi and [Bill] Murray and all those guys were such inspirations for our kind of generation. So to see a man who was there, it made it very real.” The actor, who you may recognize from his roles in “Get Him to the Greek” and “Paper Heart,” said Reitman’s legacy and r
